Solve : Window XP: Serial Question?

Answer»

I am curious as a new computer user, by doing a backup and my computer crashes or has some unforseen error that causes me to reformat it, by doing a back-up... is the os back uped as well or only the information on the harddrive?

Its just a small worry because as i undertsand the serial i used for my xp is a one time use deal, if i END up reformatting my computer, that serial wont be any good then will it?

Thanks
CFDepending on the computer...the product code for the operating system you are using is usually on a sticker attached to the case of the computer somewhere...or on a Windows book included with everything that came with your computer.

If you have software installed that performs a full backup of your computer, the product code is backed up as well...HOWEVER...it's encrypted and will not do you any good....unless you have a program installed that can actually take that encryption and give you your product code.

Depending on your backup software...you can SPECIFY what you want backed up.

It's a good idea to have a software program that will actually make a "ghost" image of your hard drive, so if you ever have to reinstall anything, the "ghosted" image of the drive will have everything you need to get yourself back up and running.Quote from: chainedfaith on May 27, 2008, 01:59:21 PM

Buy a legal copy and you won't have this worry...I do have a legal copy that came with my computer, thanks.

Although my COUSIN mentioned that her computer had to be reformatted, that the oem (?) cd that came with her computer worked fine because its a dell cd on a dell computer.

Mine is a custom built.
Will it still work fine through?
I am under the impression that the code/serial used already, cannot be used again? Or am I under the wrong impression here. Because that is why I am trying to figure if a backup will work with the serial if something goes wrong. the serial code that you used with your computer is "yours". it will work with your windows disk countless timesI think some of this confusion came about from the EARLY days of XP, when Microsoft threaten to make XP usable to one computer in the sense that, if one made too many hardware changes, at some point, it would "become" a "new" computer, invalidating the existing license. Microsoft backed off that position, thank goodness.
