Answer» Running as ADMINISTRATOR, automatic updates/background intelligent transfer services/event log all automatic and started, no blocking software or security settings I can find. Tried updating from the Windows Update site and it says that I have to download and install the newest version. I click Install Now and it goes through two screens, the download and then the copy files, up to 100% each and then I get the ERROR NUMBER.
I Googled the error number and found a number of sites with answers, none of which worked. Some had me changing the registry, others wanted a registry change but the folder they referenced was not there. Some wanted me to download the validation tool and run from the desktop, but validation is not valid for Win2k.
I have set automatic updates to daily but don't hold much hope.
Can you tell me how to get this computer to update?Whats the error code or number???it is in the title of the postOne suggestion is here: http://myitforum.techtarget.com/articles/20/view.asp?id=7121. Another suggestion would be to get regmon and filemon (both freeware) from here: http://www.sysinternals.com/ProcessesAndThreadsUtilities.html. If you run them while trying to access Windows Update, they will monitor all attempts to access the file system or registry. Watch for the "access denied" messages to figure out what it's looking for.Is there another OS installed on this machine ? ? Can you describe what happened prior to this ? ?There is no other OS on the machine. Prior to trying to update the machine was working and it still works.
I think I have a work around for it, using Belarc Advisor I can see what Microsoft security updates are missing. I print out the page and use the administrator link on the left side of the Windows update page to get the ones I need.
This is going to take a while since according to Belarc there are 92 missing.Unbelievable! Brain straining, hair pulling and fruitless searches and NOW the updates seem to be working. I figured one last chance, since downloading the 92 missing updates just did not make for a pleasant day, and it is behaving correctly.
I will keep the Belarc method on hand for another time.Good News indeed...keep in mind also Belarc SOMETIMES over-reports things...some of those 92 updates may be things you never want or need...for example language packs have regular updates. I don't need the latest Korean language pack update for instance.Yeah, Windows only shows 76 high priority and 7 OPTIONAL. Still pretty close.
