Answer» I understand that this is old news, BUT just in case anyone runs across this thread looking for a solution (as I did) to the annoying tool-tip popup on desktop shortcuts (Windows 7, 64-bit):
1) In Explorer, under tools > Folder Options > VIEW tag, there is a setting for "show popup descriptions for folder and desktop icons" - disable it.
2) The "Ultimate Windows Tweaker" from the Windows CLUB (Google it, it's freeware) has a check-box for "disable balloon tips" under the personalization settings.
3) Rather than ARGUING with a user over WHY he WANTS a particular tweak, why not just read the question, search your brain (and Google if you are inclined to be helpful) and post a suggestion?
Even a fool who remains silent is thought to be WISE.
I had to reboot in order for it to refresh the desktop settings; everything else was immediate.
-lightIt does have a side effect of preventing any tooltips for any file in Windows Explorer, though.
