Ok one day im running an automatic scan on windows defender and an error message pops up and says "Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x800106b5. A problem caused this program's SERVICE to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support for how to start a service manually." I restarted and ran the scan again but now everytime i turn on windows defender, the program turns itself off randomly. It also displays the same error message and shuts the program down from time to time when I am scanning. Other times the scan completes successfuly. Is there any WAY to fix windows defender or if not is there another program that I can use in its place?

Windows LiveOne antivirusDid you try System Restore? How is your computer security?Don't have a system restore point SET up and my security is is good and up to date, updated everyday.Solution appears to be uninstall, download a fresh copy and reinstall. Worked for this guy.

I tried to install the fresh one from MICROSOFT but it wont install what is already there. Any other ideas?Defender can't be uninstalled.
