a test web site was started for me to PLAY around with and when i opened it this

Running INTERNET Explorer 8 I see, have you tried the site using another PC, or using another browser on your PC? Firefox or Opera for example....its just 1 d.i.y. site , only have 1 pc , and i do not want to CHANGE browsers , i dont think its very much i thought i'd just ask to try and find out why , harryYou don't have to "change" browser, just try another, you can INSTALL more than one.
Asking why IE crashes with a generic error message opening an unknown site, using a system of unknown specs, with no idea what other software is installed  (to anyone reading the post) is rather a tall order.
i could give you the site it checked clean for bugs etcIn any case I suggest you switch to firefox or chrome.

I find chrome to be getting better and better. LIKE an early firefox withouth all the plugins installing all over the place.
