Solve : Windows Explorer Crashing Incessently?

Answer»

Well, here I was the other day in VLC media polayer converting a file, when it crashed. Meh, it wasn't important anyway. So, I continue my internet surfing, and away I go. The Windows Explore crashes and RESTARTS. And again. And again. In the end, I have to hit Control+Alt+Delete to hit the shut down switch on the Security OPTIONS screen. I log on again, still happening. Another restart, still going. It only affects one user account, which is no big deal,  but I cannot get my emails out of it (Outlook claims that my old PST file is locked by another process).

I have VISTA Premium with SP1 and all updates (except three optional driver updates with love from Microsoft), A Gigabyte motherboard, Core 2 Duo E4400, 1GB RAM, 120GB hard drive, and Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 (also up-to-date).

Thanks very much for your help!Try creating new profile: http://vistasupport.mvps.org/create_new_user_profile.htm
BTW...I suggest, you get more RAM for both boxes: Vista likes 2GB, and XP likes 512MB, or more.I created a new user account, I'm using it now. The RAM for US isn't an isue for us at the moment, (it runs fine, and the XP box will be decomissioned into a XAMPP server some time next year and about eight years old), but it's something we're planning on doing. How is the new user account then? It's fine. That's the thing I don't understand: it shouldn't be doing that in one account (on the upside, I've not killed the computer)Profiles get corrupt.I got the emails out, too. I must've been trying to import my new outlook profile into outlook. Oops.Just as an aside, in my new user account, I was trying to play back an FLV file in WMP11 (we have a codec pack installed which causes all sorts of problems for me), and Windows EXPLORER crashed. Can codecs cause Explorer to crash? Quote from: DouglasC on September 03, 2008, 02:57:26 AM

Can codecs cause Explorer to crash?

It is possible....

Error Messages?Just had a look at Problem Reports and Solutions, apparently the error was caused in OGM.DLL, which is associated with the Codec pack (I thought it was this *censored* thing - it causes problems with Movie Maker, as well). Remove it? (It's not really needed, VLC can take it's place).Rename it to OGM.old.
Renaming is always safer option.
