Solve : "Windows Explorer Has Encountered a Problem and Must Close"?

Answer»

I keep having sessions interrupted by the above message. I'm running XP Home on a Pentium III with 1GB RAM.

Looking further, I get: ERROR SIGNATURE:    AppName:explorer.exe   AppVer:6.0.2900.3156
ModName:infotpx.dll    ModVer: 20.4.106   Offset 00001daf

Going further yet:  Error Report Contents EXCEPTION Information Code: 0xc0000005

I haven't the faintest IDEA of what all that is about, and I haven't been able to find any Web resources that I can understand.

If you can help me, I'll be very grateful.

In replying, please remember that I'm very old, and can't speak, write, or understand computerese.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer, even if I can't understand it.
Are you sure about your spelling:
infotpx.dll
because I can't find a single reference to that file. Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?
