Solve : Windows InstallerWindows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)?

Answer»

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
Dell Inc. Dimension 4700, IE7.
Processor a 3.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 416-kilobyte primary MEMORY cache1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache.
DRIVES: 160.03 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
152.59 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

Frequently when I go to Start, Turn off Computer, Restart, it will show this message: Installing update 1 of 1. Do not turn off or unplug your computer. It will turn off AUTOMATICALLY" but then it just hangs and does nothing except show that message. I finally have to power down. When I go to Microsoft Update, there is one update, in there but it is Service Pack 3 and I do not want to install it. There is no little box in there that would say: do not show again.

Anyone know how I may correct this?

If automatic updating is on, it will automatically install SP3. The file SIZE is quite large, so that's probably why it says "Installing update..." for so long.Thank you. But I have it set to NOTIFY Me, just so it will not install something I do not need. As I notice there have been some for Windows 2000.

Go to Start / Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it...
When it finishes re-boot and then try to download the Windows Installer Fix again...
Thanks much, patio, Will do this when I get back,. Have to leave for a couple of hours. I really appreciate it. Will that do away with IE7 as I just recently installed it?

Nope, this won't affect Internet Explorer. This scans the system files and checks to see if any are corrupted.
Thank you, kpac.

Just out of curiosity, why are you avoiding SP3?Because I have had SP3 before and it caused problems. And I read a lot on computer help sites to not install it yet as too many bugs.

BTW, turning off updates completely is not a good idea. Notify, but not install is probably the best option.
As for SP3, this is my take....
If someone is willing to bet me $100, that one's computer is totally clean of malware, spyware, temporary files, installs leftovers, uninstall leftovers, and such, I'll say, go ahead, and install SP3. If the one is not sure sure, I'd say, leave it alone. It's not a crucial service pack by any means. More, or less it's just bunch of updates from SP2 times to SP3 times. If you kept the computer UPDATED, you can skip SP3, if you wish.
Thanks, Broni. I changed to Not Install from Notify as when I would restart the computer or shut it down, I kept getting the messge 1 of 1 installing. That kept saying that for over an hour so I would have to power off computer each time.

Microsoft Update says I need the Net Framework 1.1 update and Silverlight but it will not install them.
