Antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever WORK right / installed any new software?

Do you have a shiny M$ CD if you need to REINSTALL?

Alan <><  Ya its been working fine without any problem, yes there is antivirus installed.
I also do have the disc but i dont WANT to reinstall because i will lose all my files.
What could be the cause of this?As Alan said...more info.  You haven't given us much to go on.It might be a batch file in the start up folder. It is mega easy to make. Do this start up the computer and keep hitting F8 untill you see a screen asking to start in safe mode. Go to safe mode (not with netowkring or anything just safe mode) then log in and go to Start>Programs>Start up. If there is a batch file there delete it and reboot and load windows normally. Repost if this helped.Hi!everyone thanks for your responce, i dont acctualy know what other info i must provide. BraZillion i tried to use just safe mode like u suggested, but i also cant logon the same thing happens it tries to log me in but then just logs me out to the welcome screen this happens so rapidly i cant even see my desktop.

The PC is a PIII 512mb Memory, 40G HDD
Running Windows XP sp2, Sorry i'm not sure about the processor and speed.
I also cant logon in safe mode. I cant format it because i dont want to lose my files.

Why would there be a batch file in the startup menu ? ?Do you have another computer (or a friends) that you can slave your hard drive to and get the data off?

Why would there be a batch file in the startup menu ? ?

And why would one think about looking there first, if at all?  Quote from: GX1_Man on April 11, 2007, 11:22:20 AM

It is an easy "virus". It's just a batch file that has

:loop
shutdown -l
goto :loop

that's all, not but a few KB so its nothing that will lag system preformance. It might have been an exe that you used to add it.I like your thinking!

However, it also happens in safe mode. And I think that not even batch files are executed when safe mode is loaded as no programs in the start-up folder are loaded.
