Solve : windows me explorer crashes when installing dsl?

Answer»

can anyone help me, I have windows me and I ordered Verizon dsl
everytime I try to install the modem they sent me my explorer encounters and unknown error and must close the only way to stop it that I can find is to restore my PC to before the install. So now I'm paying for dsl and still using my dial up. I am connecting with a usb cable because my PC doesn't have a ethernet port. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. When I called Verizon they say I need to have my explorer uninstalled and reinstalled, I cannot afford to take it to the shop, is there anything I can do myself??
Thanks for your Help!!I forgot to say that a friend told me I didn't have enough ram (256) so I upgraded to 512 (they said that was the max for my computer) but after doing this I had no improvement with this problem. Is your pc is desktop or laptop? Surely, it will cost you nearly $100. Why are you not willing to buy ethernet card? It will save you lots of headache. Quote from: DragonFly on December 11, 2007, 08:45:33 AM

??
What will cost nearly a hundred bucks? Surely not a network interface card.

Assuming you have a desktop, and assuming it is older - you have something similar to what I use. (Win98SE here)
And last year I too went with Verizon DSL.

Is it still a Westell 6100 DSL modem/router that they send you?
Mine does have the ports to be able to connect to it via USB.
However, I didn't even try. This computer has USB1.1 ports.

Went right out and bought a CHEAP, basically no-name network interface card. Installed it, and it's driver. Connected that via ethernet cable to the dsl modem/router, and it works great. Has been for a year or so now.

If I recall correctly, the card was about $15. I could have bought one online for less, but then the SHIPPING would have made it close in total cost.
And the wait for it to arrive.
So, I went to the local computer shop and just bought one there.
Walked out with it in hand.

NICs can also be purchased at places like Staples.

Let's see if anyone else comes along and posts regarding USB connection vs. NIC.

In the meantime, please let us know if your computer is a desktop.
Give us as detailed a description of it as you can.
If it is a brand name, then give us the name and model number.

It would be GOOD to know if it has USB 1.1 or 2.0 ports.
It would be good to know if it has a free PCI slot.

If I've said something that is unfamiliar to you, just ask here and either I or somebody will be along to explain it.

I fully UNDERSTAND not being able to pay at a shop to get it going. I am familiar with that feeling.
To answer your last question though, if after conversation here you decide that your computer can accept a NIC and you can spend $15 or so on it,
then yes, it is something that you can do yourself. I hope that is encouraging.
at a comp swapmeet cards are about $4 AU. Also USB1.1 is not suitable for fast internet because it slows it down a lot.
