Solve : Windows Me Update Problem?

Answer»

Hi...hope someone can help me with these 3 problem areas which I think are related. #1) I can go to Windows Update site and move around within it but when I ask to update it won't go past "searching for updates". . #2) When trying to open a link on Outlook email, it won't open, but if I rt click and "add to favorites" I can open it from there.  #3) When I go to Start, Search, For Files, nothing happens. In the past, this has never happened. I could not access my Discover Desktop either.  My ISP gave me Ad-aware and I ran that a few times.  My NORTON anti-virus is up-to-date. I used System Restore and I got rid of folders that I no longer use.  I have dial-up 56K. I have plenty of room on my C drive. Any help would be appreciated.   Try Spybot and the online virus scanner at trendmicro.com. Also download and run Ewido. Let's make sure that system is pest free for starts.

How much time are you allowing your machine to search for updates? With a dial-up connection, it could take a while. Look for brother Billy to end ME support soon, so consider an upgrade to XP or 98 .Happy New Year Everyone. Thank you for your help. I downloaded and ran AVG and it detected a Trojan Horse Dialer.24.AY.  My Norton AV did not pick this up!  I removed the Norton but could not remove Symantec Live as it says FILE is NEEDED for Norton AV & the Norton Utilities that I had on in 2004 even tho I removed them??   I still cannot use my Start "Search for files & folder", it doesn't even acknowledge that I click on it or the Windows Update on the Start.  Also, when I Ctrl, Alt Delete I see "IEXPLORE"...I never had that before, this is in addition to EXPLORE.  What is that???

I have not run SPYBOT as yet since I have Ad Aware which my ISP suggested I run.  I haven't had the time to keep working on the links not opening, sometimes they will after a long time. Again thanks for all your help I do appreciate it! You have a bug, follow these steps to the letter and you will be free of it.

If you still have a problem after that lot then show us a Hijackthis log.Hi all....thank you for the help. OK, Fed,  I did exactly as you directed and Spybot had 44 problems corrected; however, it did not correct the problems completely. I can go to Windows update from Start but it locks up on the searching for updates.  I still can't open a link in my email, it locks up..not responding but if I put the link in favorites I can open it.

You asked me to show you a Hijackthis log.......where do I find that?

I spoke to my ISP Tech Support today and he suggested I upgrade to XP as ME and 2K are going to lose support soon. He also suggested I upgrade my Ram to 512, right now I have 256.  But I was wondering if I could try my Recovery CD-Rom by Systemax (Tiger) as I can't afford to update at this time. Would that solve the opening of links problem? Thank you again. Quote

If you carried out the steps PREVIOUSLY posted to the letter I seriously doubt you have any bugs left unless you caught them since cleaning.I am new to this forum and may not be doing this right. If so, pls forgive.

I am looking for spme fairly simple help.  My Outlook used to auto format telephone numbers and now, after a re-install, it no longer does.  Meaning, if I typed in 0123456789 and then TABBED out of filed, Outlook would format as (012) 345-6789.  Can anyone help me get this feature turnedback on?
