Solve : Windows NT Dilemma?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I work for a PUBLIC library that still has quite a few Windows NT 4.0 workstations. We house all of our children's video games on them, and we also have an administrator account and an account for the internet. Here's the problem....

Starting 4 days AGO, we received CALLS from our other branch libraries that their computers weren't working. I went to check it out, here's what's happening.... The computers will let you log into accounts, but then explorer.exe doesn't load. When you try to load Task Manger to load explorer.exe, Task manager doesn't load. So, all you get is the desktop background and nothing will load. I've tried doing the same thing in Safe Mode and it does not work either. We are in desperate need of HELP. I appreciate the advice in advance. Thanks!!Computers? more then one computer with the same problem. ? are they running off the server. Check the server. Update on more details. Yes, computers. This has happened on 5 computers and counting. It doesn't seem to make any sense. The computers are not connected to a server. They are just plugged up (out through) to the internet. I did notice that one computer seemed fine (the computer had been unplugged from the internet forever), but when I plugged it in and it got online the same thing happened to hit a day later. There are malware that shut down both Explorer and CONTROL Panel...what type of protection programs are run on these machines ? ?It very well could be a form of Spyware. We were running AVG Antivirus on the machines. Two were constantly plugged into the net and were working fine, but both started messing up on the same day. If I could at least get into the system I could do some snooping around, but explorer.exe will not load, and neither will Task Manager.Run the following in safemode with ( if you are using it ) system restore turned off:
Spybot
AdAware
AVG which you already have...
Stinger
AVG Anti-Spyware.

Shut down and re-boot each machine and see if Explorer is back.

Let us know. Here's the thing...I can't get explorer.exe or task manager if I'm trying to do a normal boot, or in safe mode. My plans were to check for spyware/malware in safe mode, but It is doing the same thing for both safe mode and normal.Quote from: patio on August 16, 2007, 07:49:24 PM

After doing this go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...you will need the appropiate XP CD and you will have to do each machine manually...
