Solve : Windows NT with a virus?

Answer»

There's not a lot of virus software that supports NT so I finally got a virus of some kind.  Now everytime I DIAL into the internet (YES I'm still dialup too) it uploads (something?) until it crashes the computer.  My problem is that NT was partitioned and C drive is real small (about 20 MB free), although D has over 2 GB.  So most of the software that I'm finding wants to install on C which ends up being too small, or needs to do an online update right away, which crashes the system.  I've tried a few programs, but they haven't worked.  So, does someone know of some software that can clean the problem from D, or how to repartition the drive without losing data?  Currently I have been using a new computer for my internet access which solved the problem, but I would like to get rid of the virus if possible.  I know this doesn't answer your questions but if I were you I'd backup the data you need to save & do a clean install with W2K or XP on a LARGER HDD.First of all, it could just be the low disk space causing the problem. Secondly there are virus scanners for NT, just find them. Thridly there are utilities to repartion harddrives but they cost money - a clean format and install would be easiest.Neil and Fed...on target  8-)

You're looking at a lot of work to resurrect that old system.

Take their advice and move into the 21st century...you won't regret it

Alan <><  What kind of anti malware applications do you have on that machine right now ? ?Norton that was last updated in 2001.  That's when it quit supporting NT.  I'm trying various things I can download but keep running into:  Does not support NT, Only installs on C:, or wants to go to the internet to update, but then crashes in the middle.I believe AVG will RUN fine on an NT machine...

I have been using it now for over 4 years ...best of all it's free. Thanks!  I'll try it and let you know how it goes.  I just set up a desktop that I wasn't using to handle my stuff that uses the internet so that takes care of my problem.  The computer with the problem is no longer connected to a phone line so it eliminates my concerns.  But I'd like to get rid of whatever is on it if I can.Well, after removing Norton (which wasn't doing me much good anyway), AVG REMOVED 4 viruses.  I've still got some small problem that something is looking for a program that doesn't exist anymore, but this is related to some earlier virus and is in registration database.  Thanks for all the helpful advice.A HJT log will probably show you what is looking for what.Try using Trend Micro Housecall (Click) if that is even possible with a dial-up modem.

AVG Free may also support Windows NT because it supports Windows 98.. Quote

A HJT log will probably show you what is looking for what.
