Solve : windows product keys?

Answer»

I got a hand-me-down computer with an OEM Windows XP Home license key on the side of it. I also have a retail installation disc of Windows XP Home. I used the product key on the side of the computer and tried to install it and it would not accept the product key..

I ALWAYS thought, when using OEM product keys, that as long as the key is used on the same computer it shipped with, any installation disc would work, as long as the version (Home or Professional) matched the product key.

Maybe the motherboard INSIDE the computer is not the ORIGINAL one? don't knowOEM product keys are tied to OEM versions of the OS.I see..

Is it ok to do a repair install on an OEM Windows installation, with a retail disk?

sureYes.
You COULD also always call MS about the older machine...they may just ACTIVATE it for you.You mean, even though I used a retail disc to install it, they might activate it?

Would they want the OEM product key?
