Solve : Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll. missing?

Answer»

Hello everybody:
Well let me start Yesterday, I worked all day... on this computer, ok off and on..... Anyways, I have a triple boot. Linux 64bit- Linux 32 bit- Win Xp. While I was partitioning I had found the partitions were not staying at the set dimensions.. after I fresh Installed XP I went BACK in to work on the partitions. I moved my Xp Partition to the begining of the HDD. When I booted after that, Win refused to start it said that my ROOT>\system32\hal.dll. file was missing. Now I know the reason for this is because it got lost when I moved the partition. Does any one know what my next move should be, I could go and find it and install it, But I have read that it is not always the best solution. Additionally I don't want to wipe the xp partition and start again because I had to call micro this time to install because I have had it installed to many times over the past 7 years.  currently xp is the only OS that is not working everything else is functional. Well I will leave this here for now Thank you everybody...
cbarnardMoving partitions ? ?
How are you doing this and what app are you using ? ?

And what do you mean that the partitions weren't staying at the set dimensions ?

That HDD may be the culprit here...bad controller perhaps. Quote from: patio on February 07, 2009, 08:33:46 AM

Originally I had mint before the xp partition.  The software I was using was partition commander and ACRONIS partition suite... I don't remember specifically which one I used. it was late and I was tired... I set the dimensions at 15gigs for both mint and XP  The mint partition was not 15gb, so I wanted to resize it but because xp was in the way I deleted the partition for mint, then moved xp over to the beginning of the HDD, then I created new mint 15gb. but in the move I lost the hal.dll. file.  Yea I know my hard drive is old and I will be upgrading it here soon but I just don't have the money yet. all TESTS and diagnostics I have run on the drive have come back with out any errors, I was using Western digital diagnostic tools for this. I hope this is enough to help...

Never a time to start messing with partitions...but we already know that now.
Missing hal.dll infoThank you patio:
Your link was good, I was able to FIX the hal.dll file. But now I have to figure out how to rename the file. When I select win xp from my boot menu. it then asks which one I want to boot. When I named it I put a one, and there was still the REGULAR Microsoft Win XP selection, which still doesn't work, I haven't' thought about it much right now, but I want to rename the file to Microsoft win Xp and delete the link to the non working section... Thank you
