Solve : Windows Search 4.0? |
|
Answer» Has ANYONE downloaded and installed Windows Search 4.0 for EITHER XP or Vista? I keep getting it offered through Windows Update. Adds a search feature to the task bar...for quick searches on your computer, internet, etc., etc. Thanks, that's what I suspected which is why I haven't downloaded it. I assume that your answer is for XP, any idea what it does for Vista?I believe there was a security update that actually removed it, at first. The download that's available now...simply puts it back...but don't hold me to it.Kirk, Windows search sucks, no matter what. I use SuperFinder: http://freewarewiki.com/SuperFinder It installs in context menu. Works well.Quote from: Broni on September 14, 2008, 05:12:16 PM Kirk, Windows search sucks, no matter what.Yeah, and I don't want a "search bar." And I suspected that in XP it would add a search bar; but, my recollection is that Windows Search 4.0 is also offered for Vista - what does it do in Vista?I don't know. I try to stay away from M$ add-ons as far, as possible. What do you mean by I don't want a "search bar."?I just booted into Vista, checked Windows Update and don't show it as a 'hidden' update - maybe I went ahead and downloaded it for Vista because Vista already has the search function. Quote from: Broni on September 14, 2008, 06:12:30 PM What do you mean by I don't want a "search bar."?I don't want a search bar or search function on my task bar. I also don't want the endless indexing, although, I must admit that I don't notice it with Vista. There was Vista update regarding search, but I don't remember, if it was called Search 4.0 Quote I don't want a search bar or search function on my task barIf you're referring to SuperFinder, it's none of those. It just installs under right click menu (index), and it doesn't do any indexing,In XP, it add a "Search" field to the left of the system tray. This doesn't happen in Vista because Vista already has the "Search" option in the Start Menu. It just simply updates the existing Windows Search.More info: http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2008/03/27/announcing-the-windows-search-4-0-preview.aspx Windows Search 4.0 introduces several improvements I'd like to call out making search even better in Windows Vista: * With Windows Search 4.0, the Windows Search Team has fixed most of the reported bugs causing a majority of distractions users have seen since Windows Vista RTM - many of those bugs were reported by you. * Great improvements have been made with regards to performance.Even now as Preview, Windows Search 4.0 has query response time about 33%faster than search queries in Windows Vista RTM. * The Windows Search Team has extended Remote Index Discovery for PC-to-PC search to work onevery supported version of Windows. This makes finding information on other PCs running Windows Search 4.0 quick and less resource-consuming. Now Windows Search can find information shared on a remote PC by accessing an index on that PC - and you will open FILES only when relevant to your search. This will also work if the user's profile is redirected. * The Windows Search Team has implemented Rollback Recovery where your search index will roll back to the last known good state (this is good in handling disc write errors). If an error occurs, your index isn't rebuilt from scratch; only the newly changed files are added to the index, making recovery from system errors not as disruptive to the machine or the user Being able to find files isn't just important to consumers - it is also important to IT Professionals managing enterprise environments. The Windows Search Team has made some improvements in Windows Search 4.0 that IT Professionals should take note of: * We have improved performance when indexing Exchange in online mode, sending fewer PACKETS and making less RPC calls. In this process we apply significantly less load on the Exchange server too. * Support for Group Policy settings is extended and improved; per-user policy is supported now. * We now support EFS - Windows Search 4.0 will index encrypted files, and user can search for them in the sane UI and through the same user experience as seen with regular, unencrypted files. Disregard pep-talk sections...LOLQuote from: Broni on September 14, 2008, 06:36:28 PM There was Vista update regarding search, but I don't remember, if it was called Search 4.0No, I wasn't referring to SuperFinder, I saw that you said it installed as a context menu. I was referring to this: Quote from: killerb255 on September 14, 2008, 06:41:23 PM In XP, it add a "Search" field to the left of the system tray.I tried Copernic once and while it really performed pretty well, I got TIRED of it sitting in the task bar! But, I'm just weird. The point about Vista already having a search function was the reasoning I used to convince myself to download it for Vista.Quote I got tired of it sitting in the task barI wouldn't like it, either. |
