Solve : Windows startup error?

Answer»

Hi,
whenever i start up my laptop (toshiba), i get the following message:
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

"you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-rom. Select "r" at the first screen to start repair"

however, as windows XP was preinstalled on the laptop, i do not have the CD and was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this issue without losing the data/files i have saved? (important university work =(

which windows installation would you like to log onto(to cancel press enter)?

what do i do next??? i tried to type the commands you gave but it only allows me to type one letter in :s

thanksSelect #1...it will then take you to a command prompt...when i type in COPY C:\WINDOWS\REPAIR\SYSTEM C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG
it says: the system cannot find the file specified

?Because you have a space in there...this breaks the syntax...

Copy and paste the commands if need be...
Did you do the 1st command first and hit Enter ? ?space in between what sorry?

i typed it exactly as posted by the user.
