Solve : Windows Update KB928366 Install Failed?

Answer»

I reformatted my hard disk this past weekend, and I'm running into a problem that I've never before seen. Windows Update (both the manual web site and the automatic update manager) attempts to install the Service Pack 1 for .Net Framework 1.1, but it fails. I receive the following notification:

Quote from: Windows Update

Some updates could not be installed.
The following updates were not installed:
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366).

I have researched this for a couple DAYS, and I cannot figure out how to remedy this. I've tried uninstalling the .net framework, cleaning up the update folders with the Windows Install Cleanup utility, reinstalling the .net framework, then attempting the update again, but it still fails. I've tried several variations of this method, as prescribed by various websites (and even Microsoft itself), but it doesn't work.

The most irritating thing about it is that once the install fails, Windows Update immediately insists on trying again and again, ad nauseam. Any IDEAS on how to fix this? Do I even need the .net framework?Did other updates installed fine, and this is the only one troublemaker? Thanks for the reply. YES, all other updates and installs worked fine. This is the only update with which I have a problem. Curiously, I don't recall having a problem with this update before I reformatted the machine.I would skip that update and go on to version 2 or higher.

But if you want that update open up the admin tools and check the .NET wizard settings for .NET apps RUN on your local machine. It should be set to full trust.

Post back and let us know how this works out for you.

The .NET frameworks are not cumulative as the Service Packs are...they are individual.
You may have to uninstall .NET 1 and re-install it to get this to work.More info on failed installs....

I no longer believe the .NET update is the problem. Windows Update is failing to install all updates as of this morning. I receive the same error message for all updates that I received for the .NET update.Get Dial-A-Fix: http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles.
Checkmark MSI, and WU/WUAU sections, and run it.I may have fixed the problem. It wasn't a .NET issue; it was a Windows Update issue. I re-registered the DLLs associated with Windows Update using a terminal window ("command" window, whatever), and then it let me install all the new updates. For any who may have the same problem in the FUTURE, try following this suggestion I found.

I'll post again after the next round of updates to let you know if this is indeed fixed.Thank you for posting back
