Solve : WINDOWS XP AND FAT32?

Answer»

I am a beginner but have an old computer .Have Windows XP Home Edition and have found that my FAY32 cannot be defraged because it has only 6% of space left on it. I am afraid to remove any programs to free up the disc space as I don't want to remove anything that may mess up my computer.
No able to purchase anything new either. Any suggestions? check the obvious places like the recycle bin, temporary internet files, downloads etc. You should be RUNNING SP3, and if so you can use Disk Cleanup

Thank you but what is SP3? I do not have it. I am on the WINDOWS XP Home Edition. I feel so stupid as I am not well versed in this but do need help on it. QUOTE from: onlyme on July 31, 2010, 11:49:53 AM

Service Pack Three for Windows XP

Where do I find this information on exactly what I have on this computer?
I appreciate your patience and help with this. Am an elderly person and
trying to find out more about this computer. I really appreciate it. Also am new at these message boards.

1. Click on Start and then Control Panel.
2. Click on the Performance and Maintenance link.

Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply double-click on the System icon and proceed to Step 4.

3. In the Performance and Maintenance window, click on the System Control Panel icon at the bottom of the window.
4. When the System Properties window opens it should default to the General tab. If not, choose it manually.
5. In the System: area of the General tab you'll find the operating system version and the service pack level.

Note: If you don't have any service pack installed, you won't see "Service Pack 0" or "Service Pack None" - there will be no reference to a service pack at all. Thank you. I only have service pack 2 and financially I can't purchase anything new on this computer. Do I need the FAT32 to keep this computer up and running and can I just dlete all THATIS in the recycle bin to possibly restore some of the space on the FAT32? Thank you for your help and I am sorry for so many questions. Just trying to learn.Quote from: onlyme on July 31, 2010, 12:14:11 PM

There is no charge for Service Pack 3; Microsoft no longer supports SP2.
Yes, empty the recycle bin.
FAT32 has nothing to do with anything you are asking. You can read all about it here: http://ntfs.com/Quote from: Salmon Trout on July 31, 2010, 11:44:49 AM

Not having SP3 in no way prevents running Disk Cleanup, which is what you implied. Quote from: soybean on July 31, 2010, 01:13:37 PM

Oh, it's just that when I went to this site...

http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx

... in a paragraph at the top of the article it says:

This article discusses how to use the tools available in Windows 7, Vista, and XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to more efficiently maintain your computer and safeguard your privacy when you're online.

However I belatedly remember that Disk Cleanup was SUPPLIED with every version of Windows XP. To see how to use it go to the article I linked to above.

I apologise if I created a misleading impression.

However:

Support for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) ended on July 13, 2010

So, no more security updates.

At any rate i'm suprised that machine even boots up properly...

You're gonna have to backup alot of data to CD/DVD before things will get back to normal...
