Solve : Windows XP big problem?

Answer»

I was on pittsburghpenguins.com earlier today when my internet explorer froze.  I went to control alt delete and close the program and I recieved an error saying ' Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator ' so I held the power button to shut my pc down.  I start it back up and got 2 errors on the welcome screen saying ' Svchost.exe app error, The instruction at "0x10002001" reference memory at "0x000a7000" the memory could not be "read".  The SECOND error said the same thing but with "0x77t52322" and "0x000023c0" I click ok and my desktop loads without my start menu at the bottom but I still had my icons.  What happens now is 30 seconds or so I get a new error saying - System shutdown, system is shutting down save all work and log off. Shutdown initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM windows must restart.  It gives me 60 seconds to restart.  During those 60 seconds i managed to bring a shortcut of System restore to the desktop.  Restart and next during the 60 seconds tried to open sys restore and restore but i did not restore within the time limit.  Ive tried all possible modes too, safe mode etc.  Tried using my restore disc but its a Dell and wouldnt run until windows was open, again the 60 second restart.  Any idea on how i can restore my computer please??That sounds awfully like the Blaster worm..  See here..

Good luck & please post back with your results.Yup thats what the problem is... but the next problem is, Im not able to control alt delete... it tells me that my tast manager has been disabled by my administrator.I found this site http://www.sophos.com/support/disinfection/blastera.html where i downloaded the programs to remove this worm.  Thing is I cant do it.  I have no way of getting into my start menu because its not there so i could stop the shutdown, I have no way of logging off and onto administrator and i dont have enough time to run any of the removal programs before it SHUTS downYep, the variants of Blaster can be difficult.

In the end it might be best for you to completely format the drive and reinstall your OS.  Is your backup up-to-date or do you need to recover critical data files :-?

Also please give some details of what you have available:
(1) floppy drive :-?
(2) Sata or ata hard drive(s) :-?
(3) partitioning :-?
(4) full OS version of cd (not just an update or recovery disk) :-?
(5) Knoppix Live cd :-?

and anything else you can think of, every little bit of info could be helpful.

There is at least one Dell specialist on the CH forums, I hope he will be along shortly to advise as well

What happens if you set the machine to boot from CD first (it may already be that way) and then restart with the Dell CD in the drive? What version of Windows is this?

You may be able to use this:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_bart_cd.html

if you have another machine from which to make this bootable CDROM. There is a free trial period. I don't know if it will whip Blaster, but for free it's worth a shot. Are you unable to get into safemode ? ?
This is where the scans should be ran anyway with System restore turned off...Safe mode still has the same problem.  I have Windows XP and my computer came with a cd to reinstall Windows.  The cd doesnt boot up until Windows has loaded so I cant get that to work either. Quote

The Dell adviser has arrived.  The advice you eventually take depends upon what you need to do and what facilities you have available or can get hold of.  The most important thing to consider is what position you will be in if you lose absolutely everything on your hard drive.  Please respond to the questions asap especially the one highlighted.
Im actually in better shape now.. Managed to install the windows service package 2 and I have my start menu/tast bar back.  Im able to cancel the shutdown and work on everything.  Still unable to ctrl alt delete.  Going to need to find a way to delete it all manuallyGood - it's an MS update which closes a security hole and prevents Blaster from creating havoc.  As SOON as you are able you should get all the critical updates from MS and review your Anti-virus and Firewall.

Again - good luckI updated and everythings running ok now.. Its still running a little slow.  I ran 2 programs to get rid of the Blaster worm but both programs said they didnt find it.  Im still not able to access tast manager so i downloaded another task manager to try and shutdown the worm.  There was a program running called free.exe and i couldnt get that to close.  While running the tast manager I keep getting the popup saying it needs to restart and would have to cancel the shutdown.Dload and run Stinger from Here in Safe Mode with system restore turned off.

Do a search for free.exe while still in safe mode and delete all traces of it.

If this doesn't kill the bugger ( it should ) then DLoad and also run the Malicious Software Removal tool from the Mothership...this will NOT run if your ver. of XP is not certified...

patio.   8-)Ahhhh this is sooo annoying.. i restarted my computerl after all the scans and i also located free.exe and removed it.  now when it starts up, windows loads but it doesnt bring me to the Welcome screen.  Windows will load and then it looks as if its going to the blue welcome screen but just gives me a black screen with my mouse.  My computer NEVER came with a boot disk just came with a disk to reinstall windows but i have to be in windows to run that.  Is there anywhere i can download a boot disk? No, but you can contact Dell and have them WALK you through it. They also have great support forums.
