What can be the cause Have you installed ANYTHING recently that may have either overwritten system files or cause a hardware conflict?
Check in Device Manager, if there are any problems.

ThanksIs the virus SCANNER attempting to scan the device?REMOVE the firewire* and re-boot then shut it down then replace firewire*<*caution is needed when doing this if unsure DONT attempt it>also have you got sp2 update?have a look in the add/remove programs..maybe the firewire as GONE up the creak..is this the only connection for your vid cam...Thank you all for your help.
