Solve : Windows XP doesn't run 16 bit apps? |
|
Answer» I have Windows XP SP2 and run it mainly as a limited user. The reason for this is security. I had a major virus attack recently. I think the limited user can't run those utilities because it is a limited user... I never run limited accounts on my system, but I thought that might be the case, so I created one and tried it. The limited account was able to access command.com, edit.com, and cmd.exe just fine. That's why I wondered if the OP had any kind of error message or such when he tried it.When I try to launch any of those apps (eg. command.com) a command prompt window opens, blank and a windows message: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\command.com C:\Ducume~1\Frank\Locals!~1\Temp. A temporary file needed for initialization could not be created or could not be written to. Make sure that the directory path exists, and disk SPACE is available. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." When I click on close or ignore the command prompt window DISAPPEARS. This is all I can get. I can create files, delete file and modify files in that temp folder with Windows Explorer as the limited user. I had that folder open in Windows Explorer while the error message comes on - no new file created. On other machines with limited user, these apps work fine. Frank |
