Solve : Windows XP Recovery Console.?

Answer»

Several procedures for error recovery require the use of the Recovery Console. Unfortunately some installs of XP will not allow access to the Recovery Console without a password, even if a password has never been set. A blank password is not accepted EITHER so simply pressing Enter is useless. (i.e. no password of any kind will be accepted).

The RegEdit below will allow access to the Recovery Console without using a password but, of course, the RegEdit must be applied when your system is running.

Before attempting the RegEdit please ENSURE the registry is fully backed up (I recommend using ERUNT).

This registry edit causes the Recovery Console not to ask for a password. This works for both XP Home and XP Pro.

Start | RUN | Regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
Exit Registry and Reboot

The MS KB is here, I believe the RegEdit is the easiest way.

Nice find...
