Solve : Windows XP unable to resolve? |
|
Answer» I have allowed Windows to scan this at 3 different times to no avail. I still have a message when inputting So I decided to tell Windows not to check that drive by inputting However, Windows now wont allow me to defrag. How can I solve this problem once & for all? Please keep SUGGESTIONS simple, as I am still a beginner. Thankyou for whatever help you can offer. I have allowed Windows to scan this at 3 different times What does this mean? Scan? How? What with? Unfortunately autocheck (which is what you see running when a dirty bit is identified) does not run with the /r switch. You need to boot to the Recovery Console and run: chkdsk /rI think the /F switch is really the one to use unless we're facing filesystem corruption robinp - please do as I suggested and run chkdsk /r BTW - if you don't have an XP cd and can't boot to the recovery console, do the following: Right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run CHECKDISK on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot. Thanks a lot guys for your suggestions. However, after running a chkdsk /r, saying Yes, exiting the command prompt window, rebooting, & running another chkdsk, (the 4th), which took an hour to complete the 5 stages. When laptop was ready, I did a Run>Command prompt & typed in FSUTIL dirty query C: it came back again saying Volume -C: is Dirty. I hopefully tried to run a Disk Defragmenter & a box opened up saying: Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (C:). Please run Chkdsk /f. And here we are again guys!!! robinpI am thinking more and more about hardware failure, probably the hard drive, but it could be the disk controller on the motherboard. Something is setting that dirty bit. |
