Solve : Windows XP will not finish shutting down?

Answer»

I have Compaq Presario, Model # SR1265CL.  I run Windows XP Home.

This computer has worked fine for 5 of the 6 months I've been using it.  I started this job 6 months ago.

Then it started hanging up (freezing) at the Windows XP logo with the words, "Windows is shutting down..."  It never finishes turning the computer off.  It hangs up even during a restart.

I don't know what I did.  I have not added anything software wise in the past 6 weeks.

I do have a HP 6210xi printer, a samsung camera, a Compaq FP 7317 monitor, a Qwest DSL modem.

How can I fix this?

Prince3333First step is to find the problem.  Currently, the leading cause of Windows XP shutdown problems is hardware incompatibility, including driver issues.

A complete list of manuals and troubleshooting guides for your PC is AVAILABLE for free download here:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?lc=en&cc=us&product=436205

-  there are known Win XP shutdown bugs that have been fixed with SP1 and later:  http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php
Unfortunately there are new known shutdown bugs that have been introduced by these same service PACKS.

-  there are known hardware incompatibilities.  A list is here:  http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php

If your system has worked until now, I would suspect a recent CHANGE:  hardware, software, operating system (upgrade, update, etc.), malware or a virus.

Run a good virus/malware scan.

Hopefully the above will HELP find the problem.  If you have any trouble with the processes or need more help, let us know.
