Solve : Windows XP won't recognizing mouse??

Answer»

I have an old Dell PC that has two versions of Windows XP Pro installed. One is the 64 bit VERSION and the other is the 32 bit version. I'm using a USB CORDED mouse and the mouse works just fine when I'm running XP Pro 64 bit, but the PC doesn't recognize it at all when I'm running the 32 bit version. It doesn't even recognize it as being plugged in. I know it has to be something simple, but I just can't figure it out. Any help would really be appreciated.Does the XP 32-bit see other devices on USB such as thumb drives etc? Generally corded mice are PLUG n play using a generic driver for optical mouse etc. In device manager are there any complaints or warnings red or yellow alerts? You might need a driver to enable the USB ports functionality etc is what I am thinking maybe, if so it should show an issue in device manager.Other USB devices work just fine. I checked in the device manager and there aren't any red or yellow alerts. The PC isn't even detecting that the mouse is plugged in. I just don't understand how it can work just fine under the 64 bit version and not the 32 bit version. The 32 bit version was a fresh install that I just did BTW.How are your 2 OSs installed? Are they on separate physical drives?

I don't totally understand why, but when I've installed 2 different installs on the same physical drive (though on different partitions) it has always been buggy at best, and totally busted at worst. This was especially true when the OSs were the same version (win 7 ult 32 & win 7 ult 64).

I'd say it could be something similar. Either that or you could check the http://www.dell.com/support/my-support/us/en/19/ site for driver updates. It could be that you don't have all the correct DRIVERS for your 32-bit and/or 64-bit version(s)...

Anyway... that's my 2.What does Device Manger show when booted to the 32 bit version ? ?
