Solve : Windows XP won't start up.?

Answer»

I've TRIED it in Safe MODE as well and it keeps going back to a blue screen that says:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any antivirus, disk defragmentation and backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK/ F to check for Hard drive corruption then restart.

Stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8735E8B0, ect....)

I'm running Windows XP and the computer is a Dell with Pentium 4. I'm a computer dummy and have no idea what I'm doing. How am I supposed to even uninstall the antivirus if I can't get into windows?? Any help would be much appreciated.
Start/Run then type in cmd and hit Enter...
This will bring up a black box Dos looking window...
Type in chkdsk /r and hit Enter...
NOTE: the space between...chkdsk and /

Let it run to completion and re-boot.

NOTE # 2...this may take some time depending on your hard drive size...do NOT interrupt it...let it finish.

Post back with the results.

PS. Welcome Aboard ! !Hey Jason1978!

Haha I've been trying to get my reply posted but I keep on going back therefore erase my responds conpletely.

But like what Patio said, run chkdsk /r. but you may want to boot your computer in safe mode if you can manage to so... run it in safe mode command prompt type the fallowing chkdsk /p /r this will allow the hard drive to completely fix any errors if there is any... normally that will fix the problem.

In case if this doesn't let me know and I'll give you a few more alternative options.

hope this helps!
ScmysterI'm confused already. I'm really dumb when it comes to this. I can't start it in safe mode. It shows windows xp trying to start up but then just keep going back to blue screen. How do I get it so I can enter the commands, "Start/Run then type in cmd and hit Enter...
This will bring up a black box Dos looking window...
Type in chkdsk /r and hit Enter...
NOTE: the space between...chkdsk and /
" ?? Only place I can go is Setup/Boot Options. Ok sounds like your problem is far more severe then I suspected.

ha ha no need to worry, if you can help your self by being relentless you'll solve this problem...
The problem seems to be the drivers to your NTFS.SYS and its related to writing and reading process your out of luck to get that baby started, your other option is to get an external hard drive if you have one available... if not get one that is just as large or larger than your computer hard drive aka internal hard driver.

You'll need a Reinstallation CD for your Windows XP OS.

Let me know when you have all of these then I'll give you the next step.

P.S. if you don't care about loosing your files don't get an external Hard Drive.

ScmysterSo it will not boot into Windows at all ? ?It starts BOOTING windows, but then just goes back to that blue screen. I try booting it in Safe mode with command prompt and it just goes through the process all over again.
Yeah your computer seems to be competely corrupted and you'll have to Install a windows repair from the Win XP CD (this wont be the only step there will be a few other ones.) and this will grant you access to your files and back them up.

Alternatively I'm sure there is a way to resolve this problem by booting into DOS and fixing it manually, but honestly it isn't worth it... it will take so much time and cause HEAD ach that it wont even be funny!

and to have a tech repair it will be to expensive matter of fact they may end up doing the same thing I will end up telling you ha ha

But do let me know when you have those TWO things ready and I'll take you through the steps!...
