Solve : wireless network problem, please help?

Answer»

I have been trying to get my sons laptop to go online and it did until the computer restarted after updating anti-virus and now it wont go back on. I have a stupid question but I am NOT computer literate.... When I click on the network for us it asks me for a network key.... I dont know what that is or where to find it or how to make my ROUTER to where it does not ask for it.... Please help... I have been trying to figure this out for two days and I am going mad...... Who set up your network? They should know what the key is. I don't recommend you setup your router to not ask for a key, as this leaves your network open to anyone within reach of it.It is a dell latitude laptop, windows xp. linksys wireless -g broadband router, we set up avast anti-virus,as for the router, my husband hooked it up so i dont know...
We are using a linksys wireless-g notebook adapter card. I pulled up the linksys info.
but i cant find what I need to be looking forQuote from: quaxo on April 21, 2008, 07:32:40 PM

dell latitude laptop, windows xp home edition version 2002 service pack 2, linksys wireless -g broadband router wrt54gWhat is the model number of the laptop?

Anyway, since your husband set up the network, he should know what the security key is.Without the 'key' your not going to connect. You, or your husband, need to a) put in the right key or b) look in the router for the key.

If he didn't set up the router fancy-like you should be able to open a browser / at the URL line type 192.168.0.1 (I believe that's the DEFAULT IP for the router). If I remember right with Linksys the username is admin and the password is password. If you get that far then somewhere in the router settings (Security) you should be able to find that passphrase/key/whatever.

Alan <>< there should be a passphrase saved in notepad under linksys and the default password for the router homepage is admin and type that in password area of the log on box only Hi chellenc68
Here is how you solve the PROBLEM:
connect a computer using a network cable to the router. Linksys comes always with a CD, INSERT the CD into this computer. Follow the on-screen directions for setup. You will reach to a point where it asks for security code to CHOOSE. You choose any thing you like based on the suggestion of the router.

Once you are DONE. you can disconnect this computer from the router and turn the laptop. Using your security code, you can get connected.

Please write me if this doesn't solve the problem.
