Solve : WMP11 and GOM Player Lockup with .mpg files --?

Answer»

Greetings. I am running XP SP3 with updates. The system has been stable for quite some time. A couple of weeks ago I noticed Media Player 11 began acting strangely with .mpg files. Upon opening a .mpg, the LAN internet connection is cut ("a network cable is disconnected or missing"). Further, at the completion of playing the file the computer is locked up requiring a reset. CTL-ALT-DEL has no effect. Upon reset and reboot the connection is restored and I can access the internet normally. This also appears to occur with GOM Player on the same .mpg files. Other file TYPES don't seem to be affected, although I don't dabble in a large number of file types. Streaming audio and .WAV file seem okay. My LAN interface to DSL is via a 3Com Etherlink card. Since the problem is occuring with both players it leads me to believe that there may be a problem with one of the XP file handlers, or that an XP setting has been changed for the .mpg file type. Everything had been working normally for months until a couple of weeks ago. Virus and spyware scans don't turn up a thing. Any help or SUGGESTIONS on where to look and/or what diagnostics to run will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Can you play other VIDEO files OK? Only .mpg is causing problem?
Are those .mpgs standalone files, or played on the internet?if u are streaming *.mpg files then your modem may be locking up causing your computer to start looking for the file which can no longer be found. Your connection speed may be an issue dependig on the quality of video
Thank you for your replys. These are .mpg files that are stored on my computer or on USB memory sticks, and that I have used for a long time. I haven't had any problems with streaming video, by the way. A knowledgable person on another forum suggested I disable Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, which is supposedly a "bad actor" with WMP 11. I did this (it had been set to "Manual"), and it appears to have fixed the problem with both WMP 11 and GOM Player. I've tried several files with both players and the play perfectly, and even repeat if I have that OPTION set. Evidentally there was something going on in WMPNSS that was affecting both players. It sure would be interesting to know why and how it happened. Another SUGGESTION was made to download a new Codec pack, but I didn't have to do that (so far). If anyone has any further comments I'd be interested in hearing them. Thanks again. That's an interesting solution. Bookmarked. Thanks
