Cleaning/Optimising the Registry for a performance gains is an absolute myth...

I do enjoy disagreeing with PATIO,
but my conscience will not allow me in this case.Fair enough...Quote
RAM: 128 MB SDRAM
XP won't run properly with this amount of RAM. Period.
You can use all cleaners in the world, and it's gonna be slow anyway.

Processor: AMD Athlong 800MHz
Little bit slow, too, but not much you can do about it.

Final word: beef up the RAM to at least 512MB (1GB preferable), and post back.Quote

I totally agree, and, if anyone wants to disagree, be prepared to provide a proof!
That registry cleaning BS starts getting on my nerves.

Let's put it this way....
The computer with clean registry will run 2 millisecond per hour faster, then a computer with dirty registry.
Whoever is able to notice the above difference, please step out.
On the other hand, if registry cleaning goes wrong, be prepared for clean reinstall.Keeping your registry clean should keep your computer of junk and that's all that does if anything more.

But the main problem is you have a 800mhz processor? Rally ? That's slow and Ram is slow too! It's like my dad's P3 at 750MHZ with 512mb of ram.

Well, the only thing you really can do is be sure you have enough ram and if you're using integrated graphics card, that's all right if you're just surfing web and writing word documents but if you are doing something like video watching, then GET a pci-e card if your computer can handle it.

Otherwise buy yourself a new computer!!! Quote

Or buy a good used one with twice the speed, twice the memory and Drive space with a legit XP OEM load for less that the price of the retail XP pro.

With Warranty!

Just Google Refurbished XP Desktop and find lots for even less that some of the 'great' PC repair programs you see advertised.
I am telling peopl, don't repair unless you have a recent power PC.

okay, thanks to all for all the information on my slow running machine.
I have decided to increase/purchase more RAM. Any suggestions on where and how to buy this would be much appreciated. Thanks alot.

Travel to Crucial.com and enter the machine specs or run the online scan...
This will tell you exactly what type and speed RAM the machine will take...
Once you have that info you can start shopping prices...and what about the processor? can that be increased or replaced? this is still a good computer so I hate to trash it and go by a new one if it can be saved. it was working fine until a few months ago...does loading new software make it run extra slow? what exactly made it start running slower than it was? thank you for all the help. much appreciated.

thanks for the crucial.com site. I did find out about adding more RAM. I am not an expert by no means on hardware so I am not sure if you are saying that adding more RAM would increase the processing speed or what (SINCE it looks like you copied and pasted the same answer to me when I asked about the processor). Can you clarify for this "slow learner"?
Thank you again for all the help. Thank you everyone.
