Solve : XP... Fan revves but won't boot ( virus Winifixer )?

Answer»

Hi I am trying to help my GIRLFRIEND fix her computer, her son inadvertently got a virus on it. He plays WOW ( World of Warcraft ) and was watching a video somewhere and he got the Winifixer virus on it. and I think he click on some things that said too remove click here and it just snowballed down from there. So when she called me it was just saying entering sleep MODE right away each time she booted it up and nothing else would happen would not bring up anything or make any noises or beeps and couldn't press F8 for safe mode just a blank screen. So she brought over here I took off the cover and sprayed it with air and restarted. It came up to the windows screen initially but stupid me shut it down because I didn't have time to dig into it just then. So when I went to start it again all I get is the fan revving and a blank screen. I look online for help and replaced the battery and the PSU but still the same just the fan revves. I grateful for any assistance that you can provide... If its toast what is the best way to transfer the data from the hard DRIVE to a new computer? I would think the hard drive data would be salvageable??...she has a lot pictures.

She does not have one but I have one that came with my computer its an XP but different brand (Great Quality is the brand name just a cheapo from Fry's Electronics ) there's 3 disc's marked CD 1 CD 2 CD 3 all say Product recovery Microsoft XP Service PACK 2That won't work. Recovery CDs work only on a computer CDs came with. We'll thats too bad looking through her paperwork it looks like they didn't provide them as it says recovery disks that you create from files stored on your computer so that sucks she didn't know better you would think that they would provide them.. So any other suggestions ... If she bought a new computer can they copy the data files / pictures from this hard drive somehow ?She should call HP/Compaq, and they should send her Recovery CDs for free. She can lie a little, and say, that computer self-creating program didn't work. It HAPPENED to me, and I got free CDs from them.Ok I'll have her do that . Thank you very much for your help !! So the recovery discs will not erase the data files or her pictures..In the meantime you could set the jumper on that drive to slave and hook it up in a working machine and copy/burn the data you don't want to lose...As patio said, because recovery CDs will get rid of everything.Ok Thanks
