Answer» Hi everyone, new to this site and looking for some help.
I have been working on a friends computer which had been AFFECTED by a number of viruses. He thought some were to do with the XPA anti virus. I tried to do a fresh install of xp but everytime it got to the SCREEN saying install xp or repair installation the computer SHUTDOWN. I tried 2 different discs with the same result. GOING into windows I found the format function would not operate, either from control panel or C prompt. Kept saying disc was locked. Eventually using another utility I managed to format the disc but I still cannot load xp, keeps shutting down at the same point. I tried re partioning but still no good.
Any ideas please?
Cheers
Gordon Disk could be damaged, is it a genuine Microsoft install disk? Look for scratches or dirt or damage on the underside of the disk. The disk could be damaged but I would look at your ram first. See if you can download a ram tester program and check out your ram.
