Solve : XP Pro installation takes way too long! [SOLVED]?

Answer»

I've ran into a very strange problem installing XP; it can take up to 15 hours! And then when I get to the GUI configuration part; the mouse moves too slow and jumpy to bear. I am trying to get it on on an older system, but I recall someone have the same problem as me elsewhere on the internet with way better specifications than me. Anyways, when installing XP, it freezes on certain file installations and takes 10 minutes! The rest copy quick and fast.

A couple things:
1. I tried switching out the CDROM drive.
2. I tried using a friends disk (with my SERIAL) after mine didn't work.
3. I ran memtest and GOT no errors.
4. I have a great Western Digital HDD which with running their disk check utility was fine.
5. I tried resetting the BIOS.

Any other suggestions? It's really starting to get on my nerves!

EDIT::
SOLUTION:

if installing from DOS and not directly from CD you should use smartdrv on the disk your
installing on or it WILL take forever...Quote

don't recall saying it did...I said if installing from dos.....

a guru who hasn't been this route before???

as follows...

use a w98 dos FLOPPY, select the cd at the prompt
goto i386 folder, type winnt...and wala...it starts the
XP install..., will usually tell you that smartdrv isn't running and to speed up
install time...exit to the dos prompt, start smartdrv for the disk

then repeat from select cdWhy would you do it this way ? ?

And i'm far from a guru BTW.OK, I got it working... Thanks everyone... But it turns out it was a completely different problem! I originally reset the Bios through restore default settings - this time, however, I set a jumper to reset it. Works perfectly!

System specs (I hid this from you for a reason -- to keep you guys from saying that's impossible and crap like that).

133Mhz Pentium
256MB RAM (SIMM)
6GB HDD

I did the DOS way, but it froze... Used 6 regular installation disks, and after doing steps above it worked.
Anyways, I am installing it for a science project experiment!Quote
