Solve : XP Questions?

Answer»

Why is my computer constantly uploading, (who knows what?) to who knows where, when I am connected online. If you watch your DSL modem and see the FLICKING lights you know what I mean. I monitor network activity in the task window and see a constant 0.03% of the bandwith being used to upload something somewhere. What is this? Am I crazey? Have I explained this well? How do I stop this?have you scanned for spyware/adware and tojans?I did find one called
webrebates0.exe
running but how do you find trojan programs?download and run www.trojanhunter.comTHANKS, I'll try that.Scan for viruses, spyware and trojans.

Refer to the Please Read This First - Viruses & Spyware sticky in the Viruses & Spyware section  for more information.are you using kazza/ blubster or any other p2p programs..you could try this>http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/Psycho Pete......If you monitor activity using the device manager......control/alt/delete .......then select task manager.....and then click the "Processes" tab ...this will show you exactly was running . You can shut it down by using the end now button.

hope this helps you

dl65 Do you have automatic updates on? It will come on and run in the background downloading the latest xp updates which of late is sp2...I've turned off any kind of auto anything with XP, I have looked at the processes that were running, out of about 29 items I found a couple that I stopped, to no avail. I ran the trojan and have done this a number of times, 47 embedded programs running the first time. Anyway I have checked and rechecked, I think my next step is to re-install the OS and see what happens, I have it on another drive and most programs work after. My uploading is still going on, at least .03-.05% of the bandwith is constantly in use.Psycho Pete.......what kind of firewall are you using ?

let us know

dl65  EUREKA!
FINALLY, the "Stinger" program worked the best, it found a "SDBOT.worm gen" virus in my system32 file of windows, once it cleaned it out it stopped uploading right away, must have been a self replicating worm virus that was trying to infect everyone else online, anyway just like that it stopped and my modem is now not moving at all unless I want it to, thanks guys! I will now spread the word of "Stinger" to everyone I know.
Thanks again!I have a hard firewall with my ROUTER,obviously isn't very good at worms, I will PROBABLY go back to my Symantec antivirus but you are forever updating it, anyway I'm good till the next worm comes along, hopefully I can smash it first this time.Psycho Pete......Glad to hear you found it.....Just a word of caution .....Stinger isnt the end all ...its was put together as a tool to assist ridding a pc of pests that sometimes prevent getting online . It is good but is limited to what it can do .
It is not a substitute for a full time virus scanner.

dl65  Psycho Pete....Set your Norton to auto update ...then you dont have to keep checking ......it works very well.
