Answer» Hello folks, You can also fix the problem from within the OS by inserting the XP CD and running: sfc /scannow Would you please elaborate more as to what I should do from turning on the computer to typing the given command.... Thank you zilooIf you can't get into Windows it doesn't matter. Just go ahead and do a repair install (boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option. XP will install on top of itself ( http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm ) Quote from: Allan on May 06, 2010, 07:06:47 AM If you have only one OS installed there will be no other choices, but you will still have to press "1". You can also fix the problem from within the OS by inserting the XP CD and running: sfc /scannow Thank you all for your prompt response. I was finally able to get to the windows by pressing "R" for command prompt repairing. I ended up with C:\windows; but there was no sfc.exe file in that directory to execute, and so I could not get any result by sfc /scannow option. Is there anything else that I should have done? Alternatively, I followed the first route and repaired the windows. ziloo Quote from: Allan on May 06, 2010, 10:31:26 AM If you can't get into Windows it doesn't matter. I found out that there are other options besides scannow for other uses, so I am repeating my question as to where my sfc.exe file is located? Thank you ziloo Quote from: ziloo on May 07, 2010, 09:44:48 AM ..........as to where my sfc.exe file is located? Well to answer my own question, it is located in c:\windows\system32 (Dowhhhhh )....Now you see why they call me a Rookie . zilooWhy go hunting for the .exe ? ? It's designed to be ran from the command prompt anyways... Hello Patio, Without proper PATH, how can one execute the sfc.exe from within another directory? ziloo Quote from: ziloo on May 09, 2010, 01:42:58 PM Hello Patio,What are you talking about? As my post above clearly states, you need to run sfc /scannow from within the OSyou can't run executables from the recovery console prompt anyways. |
