Solve : XP Repair?

Answer»

Hello folks,

There is a DLL file missing/corrupted in my Windows XP installation, and
I wanted to repair it.  Based on the instructions I found on this forum:

"After getting to the Microsoft Windows recovery console you will need to select the
Windows installation you wish to log onto. Therefore press 1 if you wish to edit the
primary Windows installation."

What other choices are there besides "Press 1", and what are they for?

Thank you for your help....

zilooIf you have only one OS installed there will be no other choices, but you will still have to press "1". You can also fix the problem from within the OS by inserting the XP CD and running: sfc /scannowIt should have only 1 listing for Windows...unless you are dual-booting.
It WOULD be HELPFUL if you could TELL us what you're seeing on your end...Whoooops..... That's okay pats, you can't ALWAYS be first  The problem started when I had left the computer unattended, and
the poor thing had gone into the sleep mode.  When I came back,
all my attempts for reviving it were futile...neither pressing keys,
moving the mouse, stroking the monitor, speaking into the speakers,
chanting and burning incense had no effect on bringing life back into
the cold metalic CASING that once showed signs of life  .

After pressing the reset button, every time windows was about to be
uploaded, the computer simply hanged right in the middle of the
bluish progress bar marching left to right across the SCREEN.........

Would you please elaborate more as to what I should do from turning on
the computer to typing the given command....

Thank you

zilooIf you can't get into Windows it doesn't matter. Just go ahead and do a repair install (boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option. XP will install on top of itself ( http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm ) Quote from: Allan on May 06, 2010, 07:06:47 AM

Thank you all for your prompt response.  I was finally able to get to the windows by
pressing "R" for command prompt repairing.  I ended up with C:\windows; but there
was no sfc.exe file in that directory to execute, and so I could not get any result by
sfc /scannow option. Is there anything else that I should have done?

Alternatively, I followed the first route and repaired the windows.

My good man......I am trying to learn something here!!
I found out that there are other options besides scannow
for other uses, so I am repeating my question as to where
my sfc.exe file is located?

Thank you

Well to answer my own question, it is located in c:\windows\system32
(Dowhhhhh  )....Now you see why they call me a Rookie  .

zilooWhy go hunting for the .exe ? ?
It's designed to be ran from the command prompt anyways...
Hello Patio,

Without proper PATH, how can one execute the sfc.exe
from within another directory?

What are you talking about? As my post above clearly states, you need to run sfc /scannow from within the OSyou can't run executables from the recovery console prompt anyways.
