Answer» Whenever I try to go into standby, I get the 'preparing to standby' screen, then it goes black and just stays there, totally frozen. I have to do a HARD reset every time. Hibernate is slightly different, that freezes on the 'preparing to hibernate' screen.
I am on XP SP2 (though it made no difference when I reverted to SP1), P4 2.8, 1 Gb RAM, 40 GB HDD, Compaq Presario 2500 series laptop.
I still get the same issue with NO devices attached to any USB ports. I have no deeply controversial software running on my system that I didn't have months AGO when everything was peachy, not even a flashy 3D screensaver. I have a nasty suspicion this is a BIOS issue but cannot be sure.
Any advice at all (apart from don't buy Compaq) would be greatly appreciated!Have you got any support from Compaq at all? Is this a known issue on a google search? Is there an updated BIOS for that machine? Some have ALSO had problems with BIOS updates!
