Solve : Xp won't finish loading...? |
|
Answer» My computer stops loading XP when it reaches the desktop. The icons show, but many are only the default icon. The task bar that I have hidden is now always visible, but the icons that are normally on it, are gone. The mouse cursor moves and the keyboard LIGHTS up, but they do not function. I cannot select anything. I can't get into safe mode. Several years ago, just after I bought this, the ps2 port in the back shorted out and I had to use a USB keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately, the keyboard won't turn on until after the welcome screen. The boot disk a friend made for me at that time, does nothing, and the original XP disk has disappeared. Frankly, I don't even know how to solve this. I believe I once downloaded info on how to get into safe mode without the F8 key, but of course, it is on this computer and I can't access it. Avast Antivirus,Running all of the above at the same time can cause conflicts. What happens when you boot in safe mode? This is very puzzling, after several days and a hundred attempts, it finally FINISHED loading! Just before I posted the problem here, I tried one more time and it refused to load, so I just left it. A few hours later, I came home to find it had loaded completely. Many times since the trouble started, I had left it running even longer, but to no avail. I'm almost afraid to turn it off now. I will start moving files immediately, just in case, but I am still puzzled. I did notice one thing when I started to use it again. It was VERY slow. After a half an hour it seems much faster. I would appreciate some THOUGHTS on this. Can I ever trust it again?Sure. I will recommend you get a new hard drive.Like the one you have so that it can be used as a replacement. Having a spare HDD is a good investment. You can also use it for backups. Much faster that using DVDs for backup. Segregate and other makers provide free software to 'clone' your current OS onto the new drive. Even Western Digital has a free version of a POPULAR 'clone program for use on their hard drive products. Acronis True Image WD Edition and other tools If you live in an area where computer hardware is not available, you could consider buying from an on-line vendor in hour country or in some location that can export to where your live. You did not say what size Hard drive you now have. The symptoms are classic for a weak hard drive. XP will attempt to recover bad reads from the HDD and correct the errors. That can take a long time. Hi, sorry that I forgot to thank you for your first reply. About a year ago, I replaced the original 40 Gig drive with a Western Digital 320 Gig drive. I cloned it with their software. Since then, I have had no problem until this. I run all the anti-whatever software once a week religiously and ran them again last night. They only reported the typical adware stuff. Avast says my system is still secure, so I ran out of ideas as to what may be the problem. If you have any preferences for the anti-whatever software, I would like to know. I need to put some on the new computer. Again, thanks for your response. The Mal Ware experts say that you should not run more that one AV at a time. Mal ware bytes is the exception, you run it on demand. So, that one mean just one AV active and Malwarebytes installed but not running. My recommendation about a second drive still holds, bu your don't need 320 GB unless you really have a lot of stuff. Most likley your system is under 50 GB if you could mire all of My Documents into another partition. After that, your used space found on the boot partition should come way down. The theory is that it becomes quicker to check, repair and fragment a partition is it has less stuff on nit, even when there is lots of space. That is not just my pinion, others believe that also. Can't prove it. Here is a link to the free backup software from WD. Oh, sorry I already did that. See above, my second post. You could buy a spare drive with maybe n120 to 160 GB and that should be enough for backup. All the others can be installed with no problems....... I believe you are right. I don't know what all those tools do. If he has just one AV, then the rest are fine. He can run tests to to see if the drive has problems. MU Computer > Drive C: > properties > tools >check disk |
