Once i closed some appications the desktop icons appeared and i could open some programs although it was running very slowly.
I ran norton windoctor, and it said there was a program missing "dotnetinstaller". I tried to run the virus scanner it it wouldnt, it said pieces of norton where missing and i had to uninstall norton and reinstall it, but i do not have a cd for norton. I downlaoded a 15 day trial version but it wouldnt let me install it..

I did everything i could but it still says i have no virtural memory and wants ot shut down. PLEASE help me asap! how can i get everything back and running again? whats wrong?sounds like a norton problem...did you use speed disk..more info on norton...is it nav or nsw...uninstall norton system works either with the uninstall it came with or the add/remove in the control panel... norton may have exceed the vm ... if you download system mechanic this >http://www.iolo.com its should sort it... thirty-day trialware..Dotnet is a Trojan. You should download AVG Free Edition anti-virus and uninstall Norton which uses a lot of system resources. You can also use Zone Alarm Free Firewall as I do on XP Pro.

If you download SpyBot SD, AdAware SE and SPYWAREBLASTER you should be able to keep your system clean and remove DOTNET.

Most of us use all three programs.

Problems with virual memory ... might ... be caused by faulty or badly seated RAM modules. Virtual memory mimicks RAM and if the RAM is faulty then you will need a lot of virtual memory.

How much RAM do you have? XP Professional machines often have provision for 4 x 1024 RAM modules and you need at least 256Mb to run WELL. 512Mb is better and 1024Mb better still.Rachael, you can also try a rescue set of up-to-date Anti-Virus floppy diskettes from another machine.

Boot to these rescue DISKS and run a virus check from the A: drive.follow thwe following step to increase ur virtual memory :

1. right on ur 'my computer'

2. Click on advanced tab

3. on performance column click setting

4. click advanced tab

5. on virtual memory column click setting

6. then se tup new virtual memory by increasing the virtual memory value according to what that showed above column... just put it there..Ummmmm, this thread is 5 months old.
