Solve : Windows 98se usb fix? |
Answer»

My usb doesn't see my new external cd burner. I downloaded the fix for this but it doesn't do anything. It recommends doing something with BIOS. What is that? My digital camera works on usb, but my webcam quit working years ago, but I don't use it so I never tried to fix it. Is it all related??
ThanksCheck with the drive manuf for Win98 drivers...almost all USB devices will need drivers to run with Win98 as USB was just a tear in MS's eye back when it was released.Sorry
What is a drive manuf for win98? I downloaded what was suppose to fix this from Microsoft, but it didn't do any good. Is the external drive I got suppose to supply something for this? I don't have a clue (can't you tell).Microsoft did not provide software drivers for USB CD burners with their Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition operating systems. In ORDER to use your "new external cd burner", you need to provide the appropriate driver software to interface between the operating system and the device. Normally, you would get this from the manufacturer (of the CD burner). However, for "newer" devices they may have decided not to incur the cost of developing and maintaining a driver for an operating system that Microsoft no longer supports.

What operating system(s) are listed as being supported on the box the external USB CD burner came in? Does your computer system meet the minimum hardware requirements listed on the box?

Did the burner come with an installation/documentation CD? If not, the drivers are usually provided as downloads from the drive manufacturer's web site.

What is the make and model number of the external CD burner?Yes, my computer is listed on the Iomega external cd driver. It was the only one I found that said that. I used the trouble shooting procedures from Iomega, and I thought I downloaded everything they said I needed, but nothing happened. I don't always understand everything they talk about and their instructions are very hard to follow. The last thing they say is to change the BIOS. There is no instructions for that and I can't seem to find help with that.
I did notice today that in the Device Manager under Hard Disk Controller it says "! Iomega Win 98 USB Disk Controller" (code 10)
That wasn't there yesterday.
I have spent $30 updating drivers and doing registry repairs but nothing has worked yet. I don't know If I'm doing things right. On registry repair it comes up with several missing files and one is "Wondows\INF\catalog\usb.cat" Does that mean anything?
ThanksIt means that whatever USB drivers that were included with that version of Win98 are either missing or corrupt...
Do you have a Win98 CD ? ?1. Computer/Motherboard. What is the make and model number of the computer (if brand name) or the make and model number of the motherboard (if not a brand name computer)?

What is the processor and processor speed? (e.g. Pentium II, 350 MHz)

How much system memory does your computer have?

2. Iomega CD Burner. What is the "model number" of the external IOmega CD Burner?

3. Registry. Go easy on the registry repairs. You probably don't need to use any third party "registry" software. The "scanreg" program provided by Microsoft may be used to optimize (scanreg /opt), fix (scanreg /fix), backup, and/or recover your registry.
Quote from: crash98 on May 01, 2008, 07:30:52 PM

On registry repair it comes up with several missing files and one is "Wondows\INF\catalog\usb.cat" Does that mean anything?

I'm not sure what it means, but I'd leave the registry alone for now.Have you tried NUSB ? For most USB devices you install any needed USB drivers before the hardware is connected to the computer. That way, when the device is connected, the computer is able to find the "correct" driver.
o From Device Manager within Windows (with the USB CD Drive connected and powered on), "uninstall" any USB drivers currently loaded for the external USB CD Drive.
o From Device Manager within Windows (with the USB CD Drive connected and powered on), "remove" the USB CD device if it's still there.
o Disconnect the external CD Drive from the computer.
o Reboot Windows 98 SE.
o Download and install the Windows 98/98SE Driver(s) on your computer.
o Reboot Windows 98 SE
o With the external CD drive disconnected, ensure it's powered on (and connected to power source if self-powered).
o Connect the drive to the computer. Best bet is USB port on back of computer (USB 2.0 port if possible).
o Computer should recognize USB device has been connected, interrogate it for "type", and load the appropriate driver (which has been previously installed).
o Take a look within Device Manager and see if it looks OK. No items flagged with yellow or red symbols and no error codes such as (code 10).

This should load the USB drivers that Windows 98SE needs. If everything goes well, you can then load the application software provided on the IOMega CD (from your new external CD drive).
Thanks for the help
I reloaded windows 98 on the computer from my recovery disc and then downloaded and loaded a free autopatch for 98. The CD burner loaded itself and is working OK.I came across the following website today: Advanced USB Trouble Shooting. As it's WRITTEN for Windows 9x/ME, it should come in handy for future troubleshooting.

Another good site (that you could disappear in for days) is: USBMan.

Since you successfully resolved your current USB issue, I'm sure you can handle it.Was the autopatcher from MSFN Forums ? ?
Otherwise known as the "Unofficial Win98 Service Pack"

I don't remember right off where I found this patch. I did see the unofficial version but I was afraid to use it. The Auto-Patch showed the 5 windows updates that I downloaded over the years from MS, so I used it. The CD burner works but now I have many other problems. I started a new software question about twunk 16 and vwin 32 errors. This thing is driving me crazy.

| |
