Solve : A different OS? - Verenitti?

Answer»

Hmm, a multi platform OS looks pretty cool. I heard of another OS doing the same but for coin mining :/
This looks pretty good, havent found any released version of Verenitti as I want to test the gaming on it.
The kickstarter is cheap for the OS as I dont need (i assume) specific hardware....
Any views about it?

I would not recommend being an early adopter of this mysterious OS - the details are scant. It doesn't even describe the kernel in broad strokes. Is it based on BSD? Linux?

The performance hit from virtualization will significantly impact game performance. Neither Adobe or Apple are supportive of virtualizing their software, so I'd expect legal hurdles if this ever releases.

As for security - I would not install untested, closed-source virtualization software on bare metal without some solid security testing by a reliable third party.

The kickstarter page is a bunch of marketing wank. OP is probably directly involved in the kickstarter. it's been coincidentally "POSTED" by people posing as curious observers on various internet forums. And when they face any negative, they (or some other new user) start babbling about privacy, something which has hardly been demonstrated as being provided by this "new OS".

I suspect calling it "Unix Like" is their way of saying it's a Linux distribution, while making it sound like it's actually a complete OS. A lot of the screenshots show existing Linux software, so the impression I get is "We need 140K to create a Linux distro".

They ALSO don't ever mention where the 140K goes or what it is for. Are they paying themselves? Programmers? artists? Who is actually involved? We know they don't have a native English proofreader for their marketing text. Best I can figure is that is all for manufacturing/assembly of their "hardware rewards".

Not worth your time. IMHO.

Solve : remove swap file?

Answer»

Hello,
I've just recently taken over a new linux BOX and ran into a problem today. The system load was up to 70 at times with user/system process load very low when doing an sar. Idle TIME was up into the 90's.
Anyway ... I found that the swap the system was running was sized at 300Megs on a machine that has 1 gig of memory.

After rebooting, the load leveled off and I was able to spend some time looking around.
I then went to create a new swap file using
Unfortunately, this took my /home directory to 100%.

I'd now like to "undo" what I've done. Is this POSSIBLE?
When I try it now, I get an invalid ARGUEMENT response.
I've tried swapoff /dev/sdb3.

Please tell me this is possible to undo. Uugh!

Thanks.

Solve : rEFInd inquiry - How to remove boot items??

Answer»

Hi all!

I would like to reduce the number of boot items in my rEFInd list. Especially now before I install Pop! OS. Mint will continue being my main distro. But I like to try other distros.
Last year I tried Deepin. And although I thought I had formatted its partition, I continue seeing its boot entries in rEFInd

I have already run:
Code: [Select]sudo apt-get autoremove

It sure did remove lots of files, but this did not shrink the list of boot items in rEFInd

I read that the next thing to do would be to add the names of those boot items to their corresponding blacklists in rEFInd (1. #dont_scan_volumes, 2. #dont_scan_dirs, 3. #dont_scan_files). So I'm trying to do that now, but a few things do not make sense. For instance, the 2 boot items I want to remove have the word deepin (Boot EFI\deepin\grubx64.efi from ESP, and Boot boot\vmlinuz-4.15.0-30deepin-generic from 976 GiB ext4 volume). According to the first one, there's a directory CALLED deepin inside the EFI dir. But this is not true:

So I'm assuming it's just a matter of removing that text from the refind.conf file. However, doing a search in that file for the word deepin did not bring up anything. This means that rEFInd is picking it up from somewhere else, but where then?

THANKS guysdrpeppercan,
This is the first I have heard about this boot manager.
Here is the site:
http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/

This page describes rEFInd, my fork of the rEFIt boot manager for computers based on the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) and Unified EFI (UEFI). Like rEFIt, rEFInd is a boot manager, meaning that it presents a menu of options to the user when the computer first starts up, as shown below. rEFInd is not a boot loader, which is a program that loads an OS kernel and hands off control to it. (Since version 3.3.0, the LINUX kernel has included a built-in boot loader, though, so this distinction is rather artificial these days, at least for Linux.) Many popular boot managers, such as the Grand Unified Bootloader (GRUB), are also boot loaders, which can blur the distinction in many users' minds...

I can not give any ADVICE. It is new to me.
Thank you Geek-9pm

I'm hoping there will be someone experienced enough to shed some light on this. OTHERWISE, it'll take me at least a week to gather that information from the rEFInd website

Solve : Server Warnings?

Answer»

Hello.

I was wondering:
If a server module on my LINUX server goes down (EG: Apache2, PHP, FTP) can I make it send some sort of alarm to my SPEAKERS?

I dont have any sort of GUI Desktop environment installed... its all command line, which, MAKES me wonder the questionable support of a sound card.

I do have a way of making it execute on fails, so, even a program that can play sound in the CLI environment would be fine.

ThanksAs long as your sound card is supported under linux I don't see why you couldn't get the system to alert you when a server fails. I don't know what app. or script you'd use but it's totally possible. Actually you could more than likely just add to the script that writes to the log file that when it writes ***** to the log file also play ***.wav .mid .mp3 (or whatever format you'll use).

You need to remember audio cards were around before the GUI.... Think DOS, CP/M, Unix, etc....

GUI's are just beautification... not a required must for hardware interaction. Maybe this will help:

Heres the search page I found it on:

Solve : Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon 32-bit -- Very Good Performance for old Netbook?

Answer»

Just wanted to share how Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon 32-bit on my Intel Atom 1.66Ghz Netbook with 2GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM and 320GB SATA II Hard Drive runs surprisingly FAST for this 9 year old Toshiba NB205 Netbook.

So if anyone out there has an older system with a 32-bit CPU and thinks it might be the end of the road for that 32-bit CPU system but want to keep it around a little longer and have better speed with very little lag, this latest 32-bit Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon build is lite on Memory and CPU use.

I upgraded from XP Home SP3 to Windows 10 Home 32-bit on this Netbook and it was horribly slow. The CPU was constantly pegged to 100% and the 2GB RAM also pegged to 100% use and excessive paging to hard drive.

It looks like the remaining years of use for this netbook will be running Linux for online use. The push to move away from Windows XP SP3 was because I started having problems with websites because the browser was out of date. Figured I'd give 10 a try but this Intel Atom Processor is too light for it to be an enjoyable USER experience. Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon 32-bit however is so sweet in that it acts like a new netbook and snappy performance. Plus most of all importance is able to surf the web without issues!
I am currently using an ASUS x540 that a friend backed over with their car. (All it needed was a new screen.) Anyways I run Debian stable with MATE, and it has been very responsive. Though older versions of Chromium have stomped on the CPU, lately it has been running super well. Currently I have 6 tabs in chromium and eclipse photon open.

Is web browsing snappy with a 10 year old atom cpu?It uses 429Mib of ram with chromium and eclipse closed. The Intel Atom is fast for everything except for Flash Games and Video Play. The GPU of the Atom APU is pretty weak is the issue. The CPU is a Intel Atom N280 1.66Ghz single-core with Hyperthreading MAKING it look like 2 cores but pretty weak.

When the netbook was new in Fall of 2009 when I bought it, it played streaming videos ok in 360p standard definition but 720phigh definition would stutter for Youtube. Movies played through VLC played fine for movies as MP4's etc full screen.

Now in Fall 2018 though videos cant be placed full screen or else you only get sound and like 1 frame per 5 seconds updated. However the video in the small box of play of Youtube without selecting full screen plays ok with some stutter. I havent tried VLC yet with Linux Mint 19 to see if it is still HAPPY or not as I have a new Core i3 8th Generation laptop for games and videos, but for fear of getting my new laptop stolen when on the road I leave this new computer at home at all times and I take old computers around with me that no one would bother with stealing or if they stole it no personal information to steal from me and they would have a low end computer on their hands of little value to a pawn shop.

I generally tuck it under the seat but no matter that detail, if I came back out to my car and it was gone. Oh well.. I have a stack of old laptops to pick from. Its just that the Netbook is nice and small and surprisingly the 9 year old battery can still run for 4.5 hours on a full battery charge so battery is healthy. Whereas the others would need to be plugged into an inverter to keep them alive with 120VAC inside my car.

For the longest time before this Netbook I would bring a Pentium III 600Mhz Dell around with me with 384MB RAM and a Rosewill USB Wireless Adapter plugged into the single USB 1.1 port for connecting to open wireless networks, and I'd at times have my car unlocked and no one messed with it because it was this old computer and generally the people who steal that stuff have an idea of whats new from old so they wont bother with it unless they want to steal your info. This laptop died when battery leaked all over main board. So the netbook was the replacement to this. But until Linux Mint 19 I thought maybe thats it for this netbook. But nope its good for a couple more years maybe, but only for Linux operation for online use while on the road.

I probably should have clarified my web use habits for this hardware in my initial post. I dont use this netbook for watching any movies. Its mainly used for researching information and typing on forums and logging onto and interacting with my colleges Moodle 3 server.

Which with Windows 10 the Netbook was just a heater pumping out hot air out its side and not very responsive for doing anything.

However with Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon 32-bit it acts fast to have multiple tabs open and surf the web for doing just about anything else except the Flash games and Videos should be avoided still because the GPU is weak and always has been weak. Where you running xp on the old dell? The Dell Dimension 4600 in my other post here it use to be running XP Home SP3. Now its onto Win 10 64-bit but the only thing old is the case now. Its got all newer guts inside. One question: does it really matter what kind of interface you use with linux in respect to peformance? (i.e., cinnamon, gnome, kde, xfce, etc)

Some people say it does, some say just pick the one that suits you best in terms of the look/gui that comes with such....Quote

does it really matter what kind of interface you use with linux in respect to peformance?
Yes. The Desktop Environment is the most likely part to cause performance issues.

Some Desktop Environments don't even work with certain hardware. GNOME, for example, is completely unusable on my Thinkpad T41p, and Cinnamon won't even start.I had a similar issue with an old Thinkpad but it would black screen on me when launching the GUI so I thought it was something related to the Video Driver missing. The strange thing is that the live environment of the installation media worked fine, it was only when installing it local that the issue showed up. However when going with Fedora instead of Mint the issue went away. I thought it was the strangest thing that a healthy older Core 2 Duo laptop with 2GB RAM had this issue. You would think it would run with the driver that worked from the Live Distro environment that worked vs somwhere in the installation it decides to use a different video card driver to which you see the Linux Mint Logo and dots and then black screen and nothing yet computer still running but display wouldnt work. I should have tried a different version of Mint on it to see if it was just Cinnamon. But didnt think the video driver would be different between them, so i took a leap to Fedora to which it would work fine after install. This was about 3 years ago. I no longer use that laptop because the battery is shot. Its in a pile for parts or running with a constant AC connection.Old thread, but if it is relevant to anyone note that I have a GIGABYTE M-1028 with same CPU and memory specs as the OP and it runs Windows 10, update 1909 acceptably well. It's not snappy but OK for a machine that I would not grieve over if I dropped or lost it. It does not typically peg memory or CPU utilization and plays Youtube videos OK. In fact, the machine is configured for dual-boot with Lubuntu 1904 and performance is generally better when I am running W10.

Zorin OS first crossed my radar a couple months ago, when co-founder and full-time DEVELOPER Artyom Zorin emailed me about the new FEATURES in Zorin OS 15. ... It MAXIMIZES space for your apps and other content, and has several multi-touch gestures similar to what Deepin recently introduced in VERSION 15.9.

Solve : Linux kernel in Windows 10?

Answer»

Not sure if this is a Linux story or not.

“The kernel itself will INITIALLY be based on version 4.19, the latest long-term stable release of Linux. The kernel will be rebased at the designation of new long-term stable releases to ensure that the WSL kernel always has the latest Linux goodness.”

-- Microsoft program manager Jack Hammons.

Several months back it was said ti be the Windows 10 and is a full Linux in the kernel.
What does that mean?
Anyway, there is now a Wikimedia entry for it.

Windows Subsystem for Linux
Quote

In May 2019, WSL 2 was announced,[2] introducing important changes such as a real Linux kernel,[3] through a subset of Hyper-V features. Since June, 2019, WSL 2 is available to the Windows 10 customers through the Windows Insider program, including the Home edition.[4]
And it goes on to add...
Quote
Microsoft's first foray into achieving Unix-like compatibility on Windows began with the Microsoft POSIX Subsystem, superseded by Windows SERVICES for UNIX via MKS/Interix, which was eventually deprecated with the release of Windows 8.1. The technology BEHIND Windows Subsystem for Linux originated in the unreleased Project Astoria, which enabled some Android applications to run on Windows 10 Mobile.[17] It was first made available in Windows 10 Insider Preview build 14316.[1

Solve : Computer won't boot up - need to run fsck from initramfs?

Answer»

I am a PRETTY novice computer user; not quite at the stereotypical "grandma" level where you have to explain what a browser is and how to OPERATE a mouse, but not much above that. I bought a secondhand laptop with Ubuntu installed on it and have been using it for a year with no issues, despite having no idea how to give a single command at the Linux command prompt; I always just turned it on and it started itself up just fine and went straight to my desktop. The other day I accidentally screwed something up and now, after I turn the computer on, it stops at a screen with a bunch of code on it; the only phrases that make any sense to me are "Linux needs to run a manual fsck" and the command prompt, which is labeled (initramfs) and has a blinking cursor after it. I have tried to type several commands, such as "fsck" or "manual fsck" or "run fsck", but none of these have done anything. I have no idea how to fix this, and figuring out how to program in Linux is obviously too complicated for my tiny caveman brain to handle. Can someone please just tell me what I can do to undo whatever problem I accidentally caused, run the necessary fsck to fix the file system, and GET the computer to go back to turning itself on without any problem? The store I bought the thing from has already refused to do any troubleshooting whatsoever, and my attempts at finding online help have been unproductive, since I easily get CONFUSED by the immense range of technical jargon that I can't handle even looking at. I just need a step-by-step that i can use to make my computer magically fix itself, the same way it has always magically run itself without any input from me, until it gets to my desktop and I can use it the same way I would use a Windows computer (except I can't install most programs on it, but that's fine because I don't need anything, I pretty much just browse the web and save picture files and such). At the (initramfs) prompt, try this:

fsck -fy /dev/sda1EDIT: IT WORKED! My other computer is back. THANK YOU, NIL! You're my hero!

It seems to be working. I'm not sure whether it's done, it's hanging at a command prompt. It says the file system was modified and a bunch of "inodes counts" were fixed. The last line says "529252/19537920 files (1.3% non-contiguous), 17583944/78142464 blocks. And then it hangs at initramfs again. Hopefully the problem is fixed, but now how do I get it to boot to the desktop? Normally it does htis automatically and doesn't wait for me to input anything..That's great
To reboot from the (initramfs) prompt, try:

reboot

i need to do a demonstration on the following question and i really don't KNOW what command to use for these.i need to do this demo using linux terminal.PLZ help me and thanks in advance.

Append a statement, namely “test” to the file named “linux”.

I tried to google looking what is the meaning for append and it says ;

To place after, or at the end of, a character, a line, or a file. In the vi editor, certain commands let you append text in a document. In the Bourne and C shells, the symbol )) allows you to append output to an existing file (or create a new file if the file does not yet exist).

plz explain and help me.thanks alot for all your help.plz help echo test >> linux

That will append the word test to the end of a file named linux.thanks alot mate...

just another doubt:

how to check whether the name test already added?

is there any other command to check this.plz help.....Checking to see if a file exists is slightly more COMPLICATED, and since this sounds like a HOMEWORK assignment you're going to have to learn to use google on your own.

Solve : Help with installing Linux on older Laptop?

Answer»

Hope to get some help. I am new to Linux and wanted to get my old laptop some new life but i have tried with a few different variances of linux without any success. For the most time thje screen just freezes in the installation process. But the last time i got the message "kernel Panic". SEE attached photo of the screen.
I have WINDOWS 10 Pro installed with 3 partitions (2 with NTFS and one with Fat32) on an ASUS laptop with Intel Core2 Duo CPU T5850 2.16 GHz and 3gb RAM, 32bit operating system, x64-based processor.
I dont know what is going on when it just freezes and i have tried with both Linux 32bit and 64 bit versions. Hope to get some help. :OIt looks like the panic was caused because TPM is enabled, but TPM does not recognize Linux as a valid OS.

TPM (Trusted Platform Module) is a Secure Boot feature included in some motherboard BIOS. It prevents the user from booting from a "non-trusted" operating system. It's a corporate feature that prevents you from installing a custom operating system on the COMPUTER. When combined with a password-protected BIOS, it prevents a malicious user with physical access to the computer from inserting a removable disk and installing a new OS or EVEN booting from a Live USB.

Try disabling Secure Boot/TPM in your BIOS before installing Linux.Hi Nil
Thanks for your help. Unfortunatly i dont have that possibility in my Bios settings. Its a desktop from 2009. From what I can find it is an issue with newer Linux Kernels, certain older Intel processors, and bad firmware. It advertises processor features incorrectly, which causes this sort of problem when those features are used. You might try seeing if there is a newer firmware version available for that system. One thing to try (I see you have an Asus laptop) from a thread on the Linux Mint forums.

Quote

I solved the problem, i couldn't install any linux distribution, on the ubuntu forums they says some asus computers have this problem. The solve is ;

Go to bios > Security> I / O interface Security> "New interface card" or so. Set it to locked.

It works for me and other asus laptop owners on ubuntu forums.

Hi Nil
Thanks for your help. Unfortunatly i dont have that possibility in my Bios settings. Its a desktop from 2009.

Do you have a BIOS option to enable / disable Windows 8 / 8.1 features? Secure Boot is sometimes enabled in there by default on some older BIOSs.

Solve : Need help removing Red Hat 9.0?

Answer»

Ok FIRST I would appreciate any help. I installed RH 9.0 about 2 months ago and I liked it at first and now I REALIZE that it is not for me. SO, I have been trying to uninstal it and I am having no luck. I have a dual boot with XP and RH 9.0. I have tried to use fdisk in Windows and I am not able to use it. I had the GRUB removed by using "fixmbr" in DOS command and now the GRUB loader is gone. So what do I have to do to erase the Linux? Actually I would like to erase the HARD drive completly so I can start off fresh. Yes, erase both OS's. PLEASE help me.I would make SURE that the bios is set to look on the floppy drive first, and then boot from a windows 98 startup disk. Use fdisk to delete all partitions. Then repartition and format. You will be in fat32 of course but when you reinstall XP it will give you the option to convert to NTFS.
using xp cd..
try deleting all partitions.. even unpartitioned partitions..
that might be a problem..

using fdisk from a bootdisk...
delete all non-dos partitions... and change hard drives
numbers when needed...there r two thing u must have to do

1) u must have to delete the linux partition, take the redhat 9 cd boot with cd and when it show grub screen to create the partition press ctrl alt f2 and run fdisk and delete the parttion or take the old version cd like redhat 8,7 and boot with that cd and delete the partition with fdisk and save the changes, after that remove the grub mbr entry by typing fdsik /mbr, after that run fdisk and create or delete the partition u try this it will work

Solve : only # displayed can not start windows?

Answer»

Hi I just moved from windows to freebsd. I installed xfree86 the latest version. Only now when i try to use the graphical user interfaces to configure it it fails. Is there a way to have freebsd automaticly start in windows instead of the #. In linux i can automaticly start in a SPECIFIC run level which enables me to automaticly go to windows?
thanks
Roger Verma
InvestorHi,

I REMEMBER reading that Linux variant can start in GUI while FreeBSD cannot.

In Linux, u can configure such that after booting up, it'll PRESENT with a GUI for userID n passwd. After entering correctly, u'll go into a GUI environment.

In FreeBSD, after booting up u can only SEE the command line n enter your passwd from there. I remem after i configure the xwindows, I type startx to start the GUI program.

Well, FreeBSD is known to be less user-friendly than Linux. U can visit specialised FreeBSD forums n newsgroup to learn more. 1 of the must go website: http://www.freebsd.org/

Solve : How can I create a partiton for Linux?

Answer»

Hello everyone. I have a computer with an 80 Gigabyte hard drive with Windows XP installed on it. I want to use partition magic to free 40 gigabytes for red hat LINUX.

I have defragmented my hard disk. I just need advice on how to go about using the tool.

I already have the linux cds to boot from. Here are some instructions:

http://www.wikihow.com/Resize-and-Create-Partitions-with-Partition-Magic-8

If it were me, I would boot to Gparted on CD and edit partitions from there. You can grab the .iso file here:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=271779
hi frnd there is no need of partition magic tool..!!!!
u can set the partitions at the TIME of installing linux but u confirm that there is no data in the remaining 40GB
u can make the partitions for linux by choosing "custom layout" at the time of installing .
u can devide the 40GB as
1..root
2..swap
root->37GB
swap->3GB(double of your RAM size);
this is enough
now u can enjoy with linux.........................
see u then bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the help. I created a virtual machine and installed Linux on it.I'm just the OPPOSITE I've got Windows running in a virtual machine under Linux.

Solve : Backup solution for Linux server?

Answer»

Hi

I have Ubuntu set up as a data storage machine (server) with normally 5 Windows 10/7 workstations connecting. The server has 3 only 1 Tb hard drives and each is around 3/4 full. What I need is to a way to make a copy daily of the server using 1 of the Windows 10 workstations and a 3 TB USB hard drive. To BACKUP the server takes about 11 hours which is REALLY not practical every day. Up to now I been using syncse from 2 bright sparks. https://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/sbse.html
What I would like is to do is 1 full backup each week then each day backup the changed files which would only be 20 or 30 GB. Sync SE doesn't seem to be able to detect the changed files on Linux and only backup those files.
Is there other software which would do this. Would a NAS box be better than usb3 drives.
Not looking for a free solution just a solution

Solve : vsFTP Server denies Folder Permissions after some minutes!?

Answer»

Good EVENING..
I have set up a vsFTP service on my VPS running Ubuntu 20.04 with KDE Plasma GUI.
After I make all the settings required to set user, permissions etc
when I login to the sftp using Filezilla the first 2 to 3 file manipulation I make the ftp client returns with messages such as permission denied.
It is very strange to me that everything looks good, working good but after some file copy-paste delete actions the ftp client refuses after that to serve my requests.
I am on wall right now what is this that creating this behaviour.
Please keep in mind that my level is more to begineer when coming to Linux but I keep reading and searching every bit of code to figure out and learn what I am doing.
Thanks in advance and excuse me for my poor English.Make sure /etc/vsftpd.conf has the LINE

write_enable=YES

E.g. edit the file as administrator:

sudo vi /etc/vsftpd.conf

If the line is commented, delete the # at the beginning of the line - MOVE the cursor over it and press x to delete that character. Then save the file and exit with the command :wq

then terminate the daemon e.g.

sudo killall vsftpd

The daemon should start again automatically on its own, loading the NEW configuration. Then retry with filezilla and see if you still get permission errorsThanks for your quick reply...
I've check for remark and it's comment as you suggest so these errors somehow "forgetting" my user's file permissions is not from this piece of code.
I have tried also changing umask to 002 but with not any result. To clarify, if /etc/vsftpd.conf contains a line like this

#write_enable=YES

That is "commented". The # indicates that the rest of the line will be ignored.

To "uncomment" it, remove the # like this

write_enable=YES

save the file, close the editor, then restart the vsftpd process. If your operating system uses systemd you can restart the process with

systemctl restart vsftpd

After a lot of trial and error I figured out the problem was that every new created file or folder inside the /ftpdirectory were changing group ownership automatically to the user that added that files-folders.
I managed to set all newly created files-folders to be set down to ftp group ownership no matter who user, which of course belongs to the ftpgroup, created that files by these commands
chgrp -R groupname /ftpdirectory (to be sure everything is in the correct place)
and by using setgid
chmod g+s /ftpdirectory
After these changes until now and with many tests no issues so far.
I don't know if this action is the correct one but seems to work.
I have posted it for any future refference by any whom might find it usefull.
Thank again for your concern and effort to help.

DOS Fdisk only sees 473MB
The Unix partion tool sees the entire HD.
I have tried a DOS wipe tool, and just FOUND a unix wipe tool, I'm going to try it today.

Solve : Desktop too firewall/router by linux??

Answer»

I was wondering what linux distro's are available too turn this old HP/eMachine rig I threw together into a router/firewall for the 16MB/s cable connection I'm getting this fall.

Full Specs:

Socket 370 HP (Asus) CUW-AM V2.07 motherboard
667MHz Celeron Coppermine 66MHz
1 stick of Hyundai 128MB PC133 SDRAM (Think thats from a compaq)
2.1 or 2.2GB Samsung ATA33 HDD (Might be ATA66, but i doubt it)
not that it matters, but the case is a eMachine 300k (painted semi flat black), with its stock bestec 100W m-ATX PSU (which still works even though this thing is 10yrs old), and its stock HDD.
I Have three NIC's available (all of which need too work together), the cards are listed as follows, all are 10/100MB/s
Linksys LNE100TX V5.1
Linksys LNE100TX V4.1
Kingston KNE100TX Version unknown, uses an intel chipset from 1997

Anyone know of any simple linux distro's i could use with this rig? I know nothing of linux.

EDIT: Forgot too mention, going too use one card as an input from my cable modem, two as outputs, one too my laptop, one too my desktop.

'nother edit, this machine may also host a small forum, I doubt the forum would use enough bandwidth too hurt anything.www.smoothwall.orgAFAIK, every Linux distro under the sun comes with the iptables package, either installed by default or readily available for installation. So you could install any general purpose distro, like the growing-by-leaps-and-bounds market leader, Ubuntu or my favorite, Mandriva, or any other.

There are several distros specifically oriented to firewalling. Smoothwall was mentioned. TinyMe and DSL are optimized to run reasonably on older hardware.

Don't forget the BSDs. I haven't tried it, but m0n0wall is based on FreeBSD and claims to be a complete, embedded firewall software package that, when used together with an embedded PC, provides all the important features of commercial firewall boxes.I was considering a floppy linux distro and just running a straight firewall, got in touch with a friend who's been dealing with computers since they where the size of a room and did that of a four function calculator, he recommends a floppy linux for the job, just lock the floppy after configing. However, a final opinion on this would be nice, I like too follow the saying, better safe than sorry.

the three distro's he picked out are:

FloppyGate
Coyote Linux
and BBIagent

Any advice, opinions, or general reference too these distro's, or any like them would be nice. I like the idea of having a driveless system, no real moving parts other than the PSU fan, CPU is passively cooled by the lower half of a Thermaltake DragonOrb CPU cooler for 370/462/7/ect CPU's. (Putting it on anything lower than a pentium III grade CPU is pointless though.)

EDIT: Sorry for the delay, ain't had much web time over the past few days for random crap that needed doing around here. Yesterday i had too wash my fathers 1986 oldsmobile custom cruiser station wagon, and my grandmothers 1994 mercury sable GS station wagon (Took me as long too do the roof on the olds as it did too do the whole mercury >< )I recommend smoothwall. It's very simple to set up and can be installed on a flash drive or memory card. It's also one of the most popular and is driven/funded by a commercial part of it which keeps it up to date and well documented.Yet again, sorry for the delay, still a lot going on around here. Anyway, how well do realtek based NIC's work with linux? The only cheap NIC's i have found on newegg all run RealTek chipsets, not sure if linux is compatible with them (I don't think any operating system wants there hardware too have crabs). Two of the NIC's i'll be running are linksys LNE100TX's, ones version 5.1, ones version 4.1, and this old kingston NIC, its a KNE100TX, unknown version, the WIC is a D-link DWL-G510 REV. B, Atheros chipset, or however you spell it. The NIC i'm looking at buying for my rig is this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156107

In case your curious too see the router/firewall I've assembled, here it is:

Motherboard: Abit AB-BH6 Slot 1 motherboard (Unknown intel chipset)

CPU: 233MHz PIIMMX

RAM: 128MB of PC133

GPU: 4MB nVidia Riva 128 AGP (Revised for a gateway) 1x or 2x (not sure which, don't care either)

PSU 100W bestec M-ATX PSU

Already listed the NIC's, the NIC closest too the GPU is the Kingston, the other two are the Linksys NIC's i have, the WIC will go between the Kingston NIC and the GPU, and I'm sure you can figure out where the new NIC will go.

If need be, I can push the RAM too 256, 384, or 512MB.

I still need too mount the floppy drive, I'll upload a picture of it once thats done. I only have one working floppy drive, so I've got too download whatever linux distro too the laptop, hook up the floppy drive too the desktop, find a working floppy, then create the boot disk on the desktop, and finally, install the floppy drive on the router somehow, and hope linux works without a hitch.

EDIT:

Sorry 'bout the picture quality, was taken by my laptops built in webcam while I balanced the Router/Firewall on my head. Oh, and ironically, this motherboard has never seen anything other than dialup, so, it'll go from a retired granny computer too a firewall/router for a 16MB/s connection. I'm still thinking of a name for this thing, simply calling it The Router, or The Firewall just doesn't seem too be quite enough. If you can think of a name, post 'em, i'm taking ideas now. just out of curiosity, why don't you just buy a switch instead of installing several nics on your pc?
btw, realtek *should* work with linux. Quote from: michaewlewis on May 16, 2008, 01:22:28 PM

just out of curiosity, why don't you just buy a switch instead of installing several nics on your pc?
btw, realtek *should* work with linux.

Keyword MAN, "Buy", I'm flat broke living on my SSI check at the moment, can barely afford too get another NIC for this thing, the other three NIC's on it where free, so was the WIC going on it, by the time I'm done, I might have $20 in this thing. Its a PC built of completely free scrap parts. I just want a hardware firewall for extra security. Also too block the bizzar traffic my computer has been receiving, packets through various servers which goes through a mess of crap when i try too WHOIS them, completely random servers, tons of them, that have nothing too do with anything I ever do, all of which usually trace back too some stupid ISP in the middle of nowhere, probably some idiot trying too steal my IP. None the LESS, I'm not owning my own ISP without proper security. Basically, the unit serves as a three port router/wireless router/firewall. The wireless will normally be disabled though, but when its on it'll run a MAC filter and be non-broadcasting.

I can't afford much until this laptops paid off this fall, then I'll get the ISP. The ISP I am getting is a 16MB/s Cable connection through comcast (oh how I hate comcast.. They should be CommyCast ), I'll be paying $60/M for it (I think its $19.99 for three MONTHS, w00t), and I'm not going too let a $60/M connection float unprotected.Try Debian www.debian.org
Try checking the last post date. He's probably got his box up and running by now.

Solve : Woops, help, where did I go wrong.?

Answer»

Hi Guys,
so I tried to install and duel boot a linux system and WINDOWS 10. I have two seperate Hard drives. I have windows on the first one and tried to install UA/Linux distro on the other one. I formatted it before the install. It all seemed to go well until I rebooted it to boot it up. No CHANCE. I was only able to boot up using the other windows system. I am going to presume that I have not installed some sort of Grub to enable it to boot. But alas, I am only guessing. I hope the Linux system I installed will be accessable some time as it really LOOK brill. I was hoping to use the second hard drive because I did not want the Linux system interfering with my Windows MBR. Hope that makes a BIT of sense. Any advice WOULD be appreciated.

All the best.

Solve : Copy files from CDROM to local?

Answer»

I want to copy files from a CD to a new directory on the HARD drive. Do I have to be in the CD and write cp filename .... This is where I get lost. How do I tell it where I want to put it? say the directory is under USERS on my hard drive? To do it in the command line, use the cp command; here's an example:
cp /home/nathanm/smbMine.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf
This WOULD take smbMine.conf from my (nathanm) home directory and copy it as smb.conf in /etc/samba.
For more detailed documentation of this, and many, Linux commands, CHECK out:
http://www.ss64.com/bash/cp.html
(I'm not related to that site though.)
Some options there may help make the process wuicker. Good luck! Go Linux!

Solve : No grub menu unless usb inserted? Dual boot windows 10/linux.?

Answer»

Sorry I am a little confused on the topic. I have an asus essentio series with asus uefi bios utility and I tried installing linux on the hardrive by creating a "/boot", "/" root, and swap partition. I have successfully installed the linux operating system but the grub menu only shows up when I have the USB plugged in. I was hoping that linux or the grub menu could be accessed from the bios utility similar to how windows 10 can be. But it doesn't show there, when I hold shift at the start screen to force boot grub it works but it only works with the usb plugged in, otherwise it tells me to insert a boot media because it doesn't detect linux or grub. IM sure there are similar issues somewhere on the internet but I have failed to find one that properly explained the issue, When I load linux from the usb everything works fine as if it was installed on the computer. But it just doesn't allow me to dual boot or boot in general unless that usb is plugged in.

I did install windows before attempting to install linux

What I WOULD like is for it to boot grub or linux os directly from the bios or at least display grub menu at pc startup without the usb needing to be plugged in. If I wanted to make a plugnboot usb I would have just launched the usb with PERSISTENCE and I wouldn't have installed linux on my hardrive. I assumed that because I have reserved a space for the linux OS and grub that it would boot from there but nope. Any clue what I did wrong?
On my boot options I have this displayed
Code: [Select]asus sh-224DB -This was here origionally and does nothing as far as I know but boots linux when usb is pluged in.
Windows Boot Manager (P1: TOSHIBA DT01ACA100) -Boots Windows.
PO: TOSHIBA FT01ACA100 (953869MB) -Boots Windows unless usb is pluged in it'll boot linux.
SanDisk Cruzer Glize (14907MB) -Linux usb
UEFI: SanDisk Cruzer Glide (12907MB) -Linux usb in UEFI.
Also sorry that I failed to mention the linux OS that I installed is Kali. Not trying to cause any chaos here just trying to find a solution to my issue.

Solve : Linus & Dos?

Answer»

Exploring the use of Linux. Can I use Linux as a server for dos / windows based PROGRAMS. Is there a way to run dos programs under linux like under windows. Any Ideas as to which linux products to use in a server, client relationship.I'd give SuSE a try; it works great for me. I BELIEVE there is a SIMPLE DOS emulator, and you can use Samba to talk with your Windows peers/clients/servers. I MAY be SETTING up a Linux help site, with a few little tutorials about how I did things.

Solve : Xandros?

Answer»

Just wanted to say that I've been using Linux for a few years now and have found Xandros Linux to be the easiest to use as far as desktops go. I've installed it on peoples computers who have little or no computer know-how and they have been able to make the transition from windows to xandros very EASILY. In fact, I've been asked if it was a new version of windows it was by some computer savvy people.

After using Slakware, Mandrake, & Red hat - Where it's INSTALL, then configure everything to make it work with what you have (Don't get me wrong, I really like these systems too) I love the ability to install Xandros with like 4 or 5 MOUSE clicks and then it does the rest for me. (You can still configure the system like you can with other Linux DISTRIBUTIONS if you want to).

OH! And the DELUXE version comes with Crossover installed so you can run alot of Windows Applications which will be great once I can run my Windows games on it.

Anyway, I just wanted to let people know that this is out there and that it's worth a look.

That's right........ I'm cool!Ramsey,

Sounds like a great Linux distro, honestly we have never tried it, but based off your description we will definitely give it a shot and recommend our users interested in Linux also consider it.

Thanks.

Solve : Linux Redhat duno version (broad question)?

Answer»

I got my hands on some old machines from some garage sale. One out of five machines have complete hardware and is able to boot. This machine currently runs redhat Linux (don't know version # right now) as the OS. There is a log in\password request...

I want to keep the OS, because I've NEVER messed with redhat or Linux for that matter and would REALLY like to get the experience from regular home use. I was wondering if there was anyway to crack the password VIA dual boot from floppy with another OS such as DOS.

Someone let me know what I should do please.

PS- I only have experience in windows...There is no way. Red Hat is free to DOWNLOAD, so you can install your own version.

By the way, the story about the "garage sale" makes a nice change from the usual "I forgot it" or "the kids changed it".

1) you can boot to single user mode and change the root password from there. If it does not work
2) use a live CD such as knoppix, boot into it, mount the first hard drive, edit /etc/shadow to remove the root password hash.

Solve : To make a persistent program on a non-persistent Linux Live USB stick??

Answer»

Wonder if any way to MAKE the persistent/steady program on a non-persistent USB Live Linux stick? I MEAN just as an exception.
I know there is a USB Live persistent ones where I could install and still had certain programs, as well as settings to my liking. And I got that one too. But would be possible to make this mentioned exception on the non-persistent USB Live Linux flash drive? I would gladly have done this.

BTW: cause this is a kind of pain in the neck to install every time apps (VPN, Skype) when I started my a non-persistent Linux Live USB. You can add a persistent partition to any Linux Live USB, if you have room on the USB stick for both the OS and the persistent partition. You can USE the OFFICIAL instructions to partition the USB stick and configure the persistent partition.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD/Persistence

Note that to partition the USB you might need to boot from something other than that USB.

You could install GPartedLive on another USB, and boot from that. Then you can insert the LiveISO and partition it with GParted.

https://gparted.org/livecd.php

Hope this helpsSeems interesting. Thank you for this info. I appreciate that.
