Solve : cd driver sploded!?

Answer»

when i plug a cd in (insert i GUESS) it doesnt detect it , i took out age of mythology and it said i had it in still, i restarted my computer and it said it was empty, i put ff8 in and it said it was still empty, whats up, am i infested?!?!?! dargh!Insert a bootable cd and make SURE the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in your bios. When you reboot does the system see the cd?does it have to be the os thats installed on my computer cause i LOST that one, can i just use a dos one?It doesn't matter as long as it's bootable. We're try to find out if the drive works.i found the dos one but it was a floppydisk, ill need to make one thats a cd, give me a minute

edit: or an hour or two, sorry i had to go somewhere, got one, ill tell you the results in a minute!it worked, idont know if i should be happy or umm... not happy, cause that MEANS its not broken and simple like that i guessHave you tried going to Device manager uninstalling the drive, then rebooting and letting Windows reinstall it for you ?
it INSTALLS it automatically, thats nice, ill try that theni thought it working, when i tried to use the drive it said no disk inserted but then it went crazy again when i put the disk in, maybe the disks the problem
edit: it was the disk, i have no idea whats wrong with it now argh, it was the last one!

Solve : How to transfer programs/files/etc. from old hard drive to new hard drive??

Answer»

How to TRANSFER programs/files/etc. from old hard drive to new hard drive? Does anyone know how? The old hard drive had a VIRUS, so I took it to a computer place and they took it out and put a new one in. =\This is a good slave tutorial for hard disks.

I would be very cautious about recovering files from an infected source though. Make SURE that you scan the drive thoroughly.Ok, THX! I'll TRY that.Let us know if it works for you, or if you require another solution.

I do hope you get it sorted though.

Solve : HP Pavillion dv3 with no drivers apart from Windows 10??

Answer»

I have a Hp Pavillion dv3 205oea and have just done a reinstall of Windows 10 on it. The problem is I cannot find any drivers for it anywhere, so I'm wonder if it will be ok to run it with just the Windows 10 drivers it installed? The Windows 10 64bit DISPLAY driver was my main concern and the chipset drivers, but like I said I can't find them anywhere. Thanks!Do you have an Internet connection?
Windows 10 will find the right drivers my itself.
Do you have any resewn to think it does not have the right drivers?

While it's likely you already have the most RECENT driver, if you're having trouble with a device, you can TRY fixing it by updating the driver or reinstalling it. Here's how:
SELECT the Start button, type Device Manager, and select it from the list of results.
Expand one of the categories to find the name of your device, then right-click (or tap and hold) it, and select Update Driver Software.
Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
If Windows doesn't find a new driver, you can try looking for one on the device manufacturer's website and follow their instructions.
Did you try that already?Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 03, 2016, 02:31:22 PM

I do have an internet question. I never knew Windows 10 installs all the drivers you need, I thought I would have to use the manufacture drivers. I don't have any yellow exclamation marks in device manager though. As the article suggests, Windows now does most of it automatically. You can try and see if Windows will find a better driver.
Are you having any trouble? Does the graphic device work good? Did you run some graphic benchmarks?
This is popular for testing a video card performance.

I have a 1920 x 1080 screen I plug into my laptop, but it only displays at the same lower Resolution as the laptop. That's the only problem I'm having, but I can live with it.

Solve : laptops updated to Windows 10 and now scrolling doesn't work on either of them.?

Answer»

Updated HP Pavillion HDX and Acer Aspire 6935 to Windows 10 and scrolling doesn't work. Both computers are 'old' but work perfectly as well as being deemed suitable for Windows 10 but a real pain without scrolling. Neither manufacturer have drivers for Windows 10 for these models. Pad works fine, just the scrolling not working. Any ideas?I have the same problem with my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. I've tried installing drivers for DIFFERENT Dell Inspiron models that are Windows 10 SUPPORTED with no success. I've even tried installing drivers intended for different brand (eg Lenovo, HP, etc.), Windows 10 supported laptops with no success. If you find a solution please let me know so I can try it on my machine. There is an option to roll back the update and restore your computer to its previous state.
You can find more INFO in a Google search.
Quote

To access this, open the Start menu and select Settings. Click the “Update & security” icon and select “Recovery.” You should see a “Go back to Windows 7” or “Go back to Windows 8.1” option. Click the Get started button to get rid of your Windows 10 install and restore your previous Windows instal.l

I don't want to rollback / restore my computer to Win 7. I want to run Win 10 but the mouse driver available from Dell was originally intended to use with Win Vista (the original OS of this computer from the factory) won't install with Windows 10. See attachment:

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Contact Dell and see if they have AUTHORED Win 10 drivers...I found one. This driver works fine. It's intended for Windows XP, Vista and 7 but it installed on my PC running Win 10 and the scroll function works fine.

Solve : Cool Classic Machine?

Answer»

Greetings!

I recently acquired a 'new' to me computer. It seems like a older custom PC. Its a Chaintech Zenith PC and has a cool LED light up clock on its case. I Will list specs at the BOTTOM.

I installed a nice 200Gb Ide hard drive and installed windows 98 SE. Issue is, i cant seem to find any drivers for 98Se. That is i am, but am unsure which of these older sites to trust. Nvidia has a 98 Driver, but the link is dead. Could someone offer some assistance. Specs are:

AMD Athlon 1500+
7NJS Zenith motherboard
1Gb DDR RAm
Geforce Ti4200 128Mb GPU
200Gb WD hard drive.

I Will also being installing XP and 2000 hopefully on a tripple boot. I might have a few uses for this machine, depending on how that GPU works out. I'll look around for you...in the meantime i suggest tryin the Win2K drivers....they should work.Motherboard:

From what I can find it's an nForce2 Ultra 400 based Mobo. Should be able to use the Unified Driver Package for nForce for Windows 9x. Can be found here:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_win9x_2.41.html

Here is a direct link: nForce

The Geforce 3 download seems to be broken as you said. You can find Detonator Drivers on Vogons. It's a reasonably safe site primarily build by the users of the vogons.org forum as a REPOSITORY of driver files for older hardware.

BTW regarding the 1GB of RAM, Win98SE has issues with 512MB or more of RAM. The SOLUTION in most cases is to add or edit "MaxFileCache = 524288" to the VCACHE section of WIN.INI. It sounds like it's booting and you just need drivers but that could bite you later since the VMM ends up taking up way too much memory for itself.Quote from: patio on May 27, 2016, 06:37:27 PM

Thanks Patio. That driver is the system driver i presume? I was able to find drivers using DriverGuide. GRANTED it was suspicious but i used a VM of Vista i have (i know Vista hehe but it was the only Retail key i had free) The installer downloaded a "Nvidia all in one" i presume now is what you offered me. Everything installed aside from Audio, GPU and the RAID.

I managed to get it all working aside from the RAID which im not really interested in using anyways right now.

As for the 512mb Ram issue, I will try what youre suggesting, though lately all my 98 builds have had 512mb (i was told that was the max without issues) and have had no real problems aside from the usual driver issues, and finding suitable windows 98 SE drivers.

Solve : USB not recognized with flash drive only?

Answer»

Just for clarification...FRONT or rear USB ports being used ? ?Ok, it just got finished running and restarted the computer and still have same issue, ? They are the front USB but I plugged into the rear USB and get the same USB not recongnized. What next?Plug one into the PC they work on...
Right clik My Computer and select Manage...then Disk Management...
Find the Flash drive...right clik it and select Properties...

Report back with your FINDINGS...Kingston
Type: Removable disk
File System FAT32
Used space 1.39MB
Free space 7.44MB

If there is more needed from this let me know
Travel to Device Manager on the troubled machine...
Expand all USB listings for roots and hubs...
Right clik every instance and select "Remove"...
You will recieva a warning message...ignore it.
Do this for all of them then re-boot.
Windows will automatically re-install them.Ok, here is what I saw and did. By your directions, if I interrupted them correctly, I right clicked the USB hub under device manager and then I did not get a remove option but insteed I un-installed them because that is the only option I saw, I hope this is the same thing. I had 4 root hub USB showing under the USB option. Three of them un-installed and disappeared as I un-installed them, but one of them would not un-installed and stayed on the device manager. I left the USB mouse and USB printer plug in during all this and did not un-install them, I hope this is correct, I restarted the computer and plugged the flashdrive in the top front USB port and still got USC device not recognized. Moved it to the lower USB drive port and it stated "new hardware found" Then it stated "USB might not be configured" I think, because it went by so fast. Then it stated "USB device not recognized". Let me know what is next, please. I do want you to know I am very grateful for your help.Well you did it correctly...but i've never ran into one that would NOT un-install...
Did you uninstall the roots and hubs ? ?

If not try again...Ok here is what I am looking at under device manager for USB, I put the number beside items for easier reference:
Universal Serial Bus controllers
1. Officejet 7300 series (DOT4USB)
2. SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
3. SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
4. SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
5. Sis PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
6. USB Composite Device - when the flashdrive is plugged to the front upper USB this USB states "unknown device"
7. USB Mass Storage Device
8. USB Mass Storage Device
9. USB Printing Support
10. USB root hub
11. USB root hub
12. USB root hub
13. USB root hub

I started un-installing 10 through 13 only and nothing else and when I got done it looked like this. The USB root hub in the #12 spot would not un-install.
1. Officejet 7300 series (DOT4USB)
2. SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
3. SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
4. SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
5. SiS PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
6. USB Composite Device
12. USB root hub

After a restart it was back to like the top and I plugged in the flashdrive and it again stated USB device not recognized. Let me know if I did something incorrectly and I will go again.

Add 7 & 8 to your list of un-installs. USB flash drives are the USB mass storage devices.I'd suggest unplugging all but the neccessary USB devices (mouse/keyboard) and re-booting and repeating the steps...I've just never heard of anything like this problem before. I'm following this thread with GREAT interest.Quote from: Allan on November 12, 2009, 04:18:23 PM

I've just never heard of anything like this problem before. I'm following this thread with great interest.

You too eh?Ok the only USB device I had plugged up was the printer and I unplugged it. Now in device manager I have:
Universal Serial Bus controller
1. SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
2. SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
3. SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
4. SiS PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
5. USB Mass Storage Device
6. USB root hub
7. USB root hub
8. USB root hub
9. USB root hub
Again there is nothing plugged into any USB port keyboard and mouse are on PS/2 ports. Which of the above items should I go in and un-install and does the list above look correct with nothing plugged in?5 thru 9....
Remember to clik on them to expand them as well and remove all the entries...Ok, I un-installed 5 through 9 and restarted the system. When it came back up I got some error CODES. I don't know if they are important but here is what they are.

BCCode: 1000007e BCP1: C0000005 BCP2: 00000000 BCP3: F7A08A18 BCP4: F7A08714 OSVer: 5_1_2600 SP: 2_0 PROD: 768_1

C\DOCUMEN~1\COMPAQ~1LOCALS~1\Temp\\WERcebe.dir00\sysdata.xml

Got past those and plugged in the USB and I restarted the computer and plugged the flashdrive and it stated "new hardware found" Then it stated "USB might not be configured" I think, because it went by so fast. Then it stated "USB device not recognized" again.

Solve : Windows has stopped this Device Code 43?

Answer»

Greetings!

This machine is making me very angry.

Since from the previous post, the ATi X1200 no longer could cut it in windows 10, and popped in a nice Nvidia 8600GT which is Supported in windows 10. The Driver installed and everything seemed to run smooth. Now for some odd reason, windows has "Stopped the device" and is refusing to let the driver operate.

Any suggestions? Are you using Windows XP or Windows 10?
Windows 10 has an option up the install media and choose a repair or recovery.

I was using Windows 10. Not sure where XP came from as there was no mention about it. The machine was running Vista. As usual i will explain what my findings where.

Turns out something is up with the motherboard and for some reason or another when the machine has all 4 ram slots FILLED up the GPU and AUDIO go funky. Ie the GPU EITHER being onboard or in the PCI-E slot WONT load its driver, and the Audio WOULD make weird screaming sounds whenever the machine logged in or out ie outputted sound. I presume a northbridge issue, im not sure. Sadly I am not that skilled. Since the motherboard was already posing issues the owner of the machine was suggested a newer model.

I appreciate your help as this computer posed many problems through a few posts.

Solve : Device manager yellow flags?

Answer»

Hello fellas, new guy here. I own a Lenovo z50-75 laptop FX-7500, R7-M260DX running on Windows 10. The problem I get when I safe boot in device manager is the one showing in the attached image. Also, when I restart my laptop, I get the window showed in the other image, and my screen flashes black for about 10 seconds and then its all fine until the next time I restart it. In addition to that, today when it happened all usb ports and the ethernet port were not working at all, until I restarted for another time. Device manager says all drivers are up to date, and I havent found anything regarding this issue in Lenovo's support website. Thanks in advance for your help.

It came with 8.1 and I upgraded to 10 myself. After the upgrade, I reinstalled all the drivers availiable at the Lenovo support site to MAKE sure everything was compatible with 10. And to be honest I didnt have any problems with 10 since I upgraded, this issue came up much after that.
As for the Primary IM Controller, I understand that it does no harm for me to unistall it since its not working properly. But what about the Generic PnP monitor? I have never plugged any other monitor on my laptopQuote from: patio on May 27, 2016, 11:06:49 AM
Well there was one plugged at some point as it's showing there...

Do you have the Driver CD that shipped with the Lenovo ?
Well I never had a monitor in my LIFE to start with ... And I bought it from a retail shop, Driver CD was not includedThen in that case it's safe to remove/uninstall the plug and play monitor....

The IM controller however is neccessary...re-visit the Lenovo site to see if they list it.The Monitor likely refers to the laptop screen. Usually it shows more 'fully'; eg. my Thinkpad shows "Wide viewing angle & High density FlexView Display". It may be as Dave mentioned that the Graphics Chip driver isn't installed.

I've been trying to look into what the "Primary iM Controller" does. Best I can figure is it is "Independent Multicast". It looks like it does something with hardware information as it has a few other "info" dlls that appear to retrieve hardware information. It may be PART of the "Customer Engagement" Service. It's also shown in Device Manager on my Thinkpad T550.

Device manager says all drivers are up to date
Device Manager says a device is up to date if it cannot FIND a new version on the Windows Update site. It can't be trusted as actually telling you there is no newer version.

here is the driver page for that laptop. It looks like a new driver for the graphics chip was made available a few days ago.

Solve : SAMSUNG TS-H492 drivers?

Answer»

My friend got a new computer and gave me his combo drive out of his computer, only he had lost the installation CD. Thinking I could find the drivers on the internet, I went ahead and installed it into my computer. But for whatever reason my computer does not recognize it. I'm not the best with computers, but I have updated my computer MANY times w/o any troubles. Could the reason my computer doesn't recognize it be because I have no drivers for it, or is it bad? He says it worked fine in his computer tho. I did find drivers off of SAMSUNG's site, but because my computer didn't think I had it installed, I couldn't install the drivers. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks. It probably is not jumpered correctly. If it is a second optical drive it should be jumpered as slave (jumpers are on the back, near where the data cable plugs in). It might have MA, SL and CS as options. You want SL.

Drivers are not needed, but any software to burn CD's or read DVD's will need to be loaded. Thanks GX1_Man, you were correct. It was still jumpered as the master drive. I still had some minor problems at first, but I got it all worked out. Thanks Again.Glad you are up and running! ok I am having a problem with this I hope some one could help me. my cd drive is not working and when I go to divice MANEGER i have a yellow ! NEXT to my cd rom I try to up date drivers and it can not do it or even roll back the drivers. but it will not work I even got an external cd rom and it will not let me use it as well.

Solve : catalyst install corrupts OS?

Answer»

i have had trouble diagnosing my computer because many problems may have occurred at once.
it started a few months ago when my monitor would randomly change colors and SHAPES after warming up. you could see the mouse move, but it did not look like a white arrow, it was a large square with many changing colors inside.
then eventually the computer would not boot, nothing would appear on the screen when the power button was pushed.
i described the problem to many experts and they all came to the same conclusion, that it either had to be the system memory or the graphics card memory.
i ORDERED a new ati 5750 graphics card and it arrived today. i slipped it in and the computer appeared to boot properly.
This means that the graphics card was definitely bad.
But there is at least one more problem.
I began installing the drivers.
i had read that there were problems with this driver on windows xp, but that they had recently solved the problem with the release of catalyst 9.11, and i could not find ANYONE on the many many sites i visited who could say that they still had problems with windows xp after installing catalyst 9.11.
but for me, the installation halted after the file extract every time. i would click install, and the catalyst window would disappear, and when i looked up the installer process in the task manager, it was consuming 0% of total processing power. i waited patiently but eventually rebooted and tried installing over and over again, both from the xfx cd included with the graphics card and from an installer downloaded from ati's site with the same results every time.
after 5 tries a window appeared displaying the message "windows hard error" i kept xing it out and it appeared again and again. i tried to reboot and the computer would not. the computer now refuses to boot from the hard disk, it just continually says "system error, insert boot disk and press enter."
so i ran memtest86, thinking that perhaps my memory was also bad, perhaps a memory error caused the installation of the driver to corrupt my OS, with both of my sticks in, MEMTEST 86 completes the walking ones test, but then reboots at the 66% marker of the "own ADDRESS test"
with one stick in, it completes all tests with no errors.
i have tried all combination of stick placement, the system refuses to boot from the hard disk.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memtest

Known problems

There are two versions (or "streams") of Memtest86. One is simply known as Memtest86 (current version 3.5) and the other is known as Memtest86+ (current version 4.0). They both have almost identical screen appearance. The 3.5 version is known to fail on some (or many, or most) computers with 4 GB of installed memory (the failure results in a spontaneous system reboot soon after the program starts running). The Memtest86+ 4.0 version does not exhibit this behavior. Also, there is a single-core and multi-core version of the Memtest86 3.5 version, and the multi-core version has been observed to not function on systems with AMD nor Intel Quad-core CPUs.

ok so that explains the repeated reboots. i have 9 passes on one stick without errors and 27 passes on the other without errors. that must mean my memory is good right? and amd wouldn't release software that would corrupt my OS all by itself right? so then whats wrong with my computer?

Solve : PCI multimedia audio device driver for windows 98?

Answer» HI: I have an older desktop running windows 98 that I want to give to my kid to mess around on. However, the sound has quit working and it tells me that the driver for this DEVICE is not installed (code 28). I know I could just download this from somewhere but, this desktop does not have internet access (we have wi-fi). I want to use my windows XP latop to download the driver to a thumbnail drive and then transfer the download to the old desktop?? Is that possible. Most of the web-site I visited to try and download had software that "checked" your operating system to see what driver you NEEDED - but this is no good for me as it is for a different computer! Any ideas or suggestions as to where I can get this driver downloaded to a thumbnail drive would be GREATLY appreciated. Obviously, with such an old desktop, I do not want to spend a ton of cash to get the sound working! www.driverguide.com used to be free, and I think now its free for your FIRST 2 or 3 driver downloads after registering. I would burn the drivers to a CD as for USB for Windows 98 and Thumbdrives can be a pita to get them working, especially if Windows 98 is not SE.Is the audio on board or is it an expansion card?

If it's on board, give us the brand and model of the computer. If it's a card give us the brand and model of card.

Solve : Can I get my files from my old computer??

Answer»

I had a desktop computer which shut down. My memory BOARD was broken. Now have a 9 inch tablet. Is there anyway I can retrieve my old files from my old computer? I know that my tablet doesn't have enough juice to retrieve all my old files but could my tablet handle a few files? Would it be better if I had a laptop?Simple answer is not. But wait, here is more to consider.

Photos, videos and documents can be moved from any computer to a tablet with some limits. But PROGRAMS do not do well when transferred from one device to another. Bedsides the issue of screen size, there is the touch screen problem.

Then there is the code problem. Tablets computers have much different code that other computers. So do not expect a nice program from your computer to work on your tablet. The good news is that tablets computers can get programs for a much lower cost, or even free. You could buy an external DRIVE case, remove the hard drive from the old computer and put it in the external case. Would need more info about your old computer in order to advise what case you needed and such. You'll want a case with it's own power supply. Post back with the make and model of your old computer.

What type of tablet do you have? Is it an iPad, ANDROID or Windows tablet? Post the make and model of the tablet so we can advise on how you could transfer and use some of the files such as documents, pictures or videos on your tablet. There really isn't any limitation on "data" files other than your tablet probably won't have enough storage space to accommodate all of your files at one time. You could leave them on the external and access them from the tablet. The tablet having a touch interface does not represent a limitation in anyway as to which data files you can access. Programs won't be able to be transferred. If the old computer was running Windows and the tablet is running Windows, you could re-install your programs on the tablet but, as a general rule, programs cannot be transferred from one computer to another.

It's a 9 inch Polaroid Android tablet. Before I post the model number etc., where would that be located because I can't find it.

Also, do you think that transferring files from an old computer to a laptop would be better considering a laptop has more room?Quote

Also, do you think that transferring files from an old computer to a laptop would be better considering a laptop has more room?

Yes. Plus if you INVEST in an external HDD enclosure you can always utilise that HDD for extra storage...Would a Chromebook be ok as well?A Chromebook would work but they don't generally have much in the way of storage either. Regardless, you will need an enclosure for the hard drive from your old computer. What is the make and model of your old computer? Need that info in order to advise which external enclosure you would need. More than likely, you need an enclosure for a 2.5" SATA drive but, depending on how old that laptop is, it may be a PATA drive.

I DONT have windows 10 on a disk. so I cant start in dosYou could try Safe Mode.

Start->Settings, choose Update & Security, then Recovery.

Under ADVANCED Startup, choose "Restart Now".

The System will reboot to an option screen; choose
Troubleshoot->Advanced Options->Startup Settings->Restart

You'll see another list of options. You can choose either Safe Mode (F4) or Safe Mode With Networking (F5).

The point of safe mode would be to try to fix the problem. Looking online it seems these issues are common for some NVidia graphics cards on Windows 10 when using the drivers provided by Windows 10. One thing to try would be to use Safe Mode With Networking and go to the NVidia website to get the latest driver from NVidia and install it and see if that may resolve the issue.I am using the drivers from NVidia. You should try the original drivers that shipped with the card...or get the current ones from the card manuf. site...not nVidia.ok I will try downloading the drivers from evga. Keep in mind also...newer drivers aren't always better drivers...

Solve : Please help me with this almost unsolvable problem?

Answer»

I have an Alineware 18 with 780gtx SLI, windows 8. the laptop lost the difference between the primary and secondary screens. it started when I used secondary LCD and I reinstalled windows using secondary LCD. so now when I turn on my laptop it sounds with 8 beeps and the laptop LCD doesn't work, only works when I connect secondary LCD and from there switch to laptop LCD. the laptop LCD is not dead, it works perfectly but without external LCD it won't work. I tried formatting and reinstalling windows but doesn't work. updated BIOS, ran Diagnostic boot and it gave me this error:

Error code 2000-0321
validation 129846
msg: LCD EDID- unable to access EDID EEPROM

guys I will owe u everything if u HELPED me to solve this issue.

thanks for ur time.In the nvidia software that came as part of the driver. You should be able to select which display is the primary with both connected. Once you designate the laptops display as the primary display, then it should save this info and you should be able to remove the secondary display attached to it. Reboot it and it should work with the laptops LCD instead.

Hoping this is the fix. I had a older Core 2 Duo laptop with Geforce 7300 and ran into a BLACK screen issue where somehow the primary and secondary got swapped in the nvidia configuration. By specifying which display was primary and which was secondary, it fixed my problem that sounds like yours.

As per the BIOS error with the LCD, thats an odd one. Hopefully your only looking at specifying which display is the primary and setting the laptops LCD as the primary. Then a reboot in which the laptops display should then work. BEST of luck and hope this helps! thanks for the reply, but no that didn't work for me. As I said, my primary screen works only when I switch it from nividia settings but that doesn't save it, it gets back to the same settings as I shut down the laptop. also the Dell and startup logos doesn't show on laptop screen but on the external screen, which means the graphic card sees the external screen as primary by default.

Solve : ADSL link + telephones?

Answer»

There are 3 telephone wall plugs in this house. The one in the lounge has a ADSL router + filter + telephone. This works well. However, on occasions we wish to use the phone in the kitchen. Plugging it into the wall socket breaks the ADSL link. Is there some way we can get round this, perhaps by putting filters on the kitchen and bedroom phones? With ADSL you should have line filters on ALL phone jacks...whether they are being used or not.Maybe I was not clear. Normally there are no phones plugged into the kitchen or bedroom wall sockets. Occasionally we plug a phone into the kitchen one, the ADSL link is then broken. If I put line filters on the kitchen and bedroom filters can I leave them pugged in the whole time so we then have the 3 phones + ADSL working continually? The filters should be on all outlets...whether a phone is plugged into them or not is irrelevant...Patio, thanks for that comment. I had had problems with my ADSL connection some time ago so had sort the advice of the ISP technical advisers. They, at no time told me that all the phone outlets should have line filters. they just tole me that the ADSL would DROP out if I inserted a phone in one of the other outlets. I should have checked with other sources. It has been easy to find other sources once I STARTED LOOKING. Any way, thanks to you, I know what to do to get the working arrangement we were seeking. I will now procure 2 ADSL line filters. If you see a DSL service truck in the area just ask the driver...they hand 'em out like candy here...Quote from: patio on July 17, 2009, 07:46:47 AM

With ADSL you should have line filters on ALL phone jacks...whether they are being used or not.
patio, are you absolutely sure about this? It doesn't make sense that an unused wall phone jack without a line filter on it would cause problems. One reference, http://support.hubris.net/knowledge_base/013.html, simply says "Any cord that does not connect to your DSL modem should have a DSL filter on it." That implies that no filter would be needed on phone jack if nothing is connected it.

I think I could conduct a test on this issue. It may not cause problems in itself, not having a filter on an unused jack, but what happens any time the original poster plugs in a phone? Loss of DSL service. More convenient, I think, to filter all the jacks, and not have to move a filter and a phone when necessary.

The general advice I seem to remember is to filter all the phone jacks on the premise.Well, if you don't have that filter in the jack, you would be losing the ADSL signal (no internet then) and i you have the filter, the phone should work fine without internet loss.

I have filters on all the wall jacks that I have a phone connected to and I have DSL internet and it works fine. I can call somebody and SURF the net at same time as it should be.Quote from: 2x3i5x on July 18, 2009, 12:08:13 PM
Well, if you don't have that filter in the jack, you would be losing the ADSL signal ...
Yes, that's true IF that jack is being used by a phone, FAX machine, etc. But, if it's not being used for anything, then not having a filter on it is not going to cause loss of the ADSL signal. But, Aegis makes a good point; it's a good reason to put filters on all jacks.I had issues when i first got it...incoming phone calls would cause the DSL signal to drop...all phones worked fine.

After i located an empty jack and threw a filter on it the issue dissappeared.I was not aware until now that there were more posts on the subject. I had expected to be advised when there was a post.I did what was recommended and put filters on the phone outlets and the system now gives no problems. Thanks to those who provided the advice.Hmm, a reply after 4 months. Great. I gather you put filters on all phone jacks, even ones that are not being used if you have any.

I'll say again that I do not have a filter on unused phone jacks at my residence and this does not cause a problem. And, logically, I see no reason why it would. The purpose of the filters is to filter out DSL "noise" which can degrade the quality of telephone conversation and interfere with use of some devices that use an analog signal such as fax machines. So, if a jack is not being used, then it does not need a filter.

If other users find they need a filter on all phone jacks, including unused ones, I wish I knew the technical reason for that. Perhaps there's some technical difference in DSL/ADSL services or some technical difference in the way phone lines are installed in a building that would account for this.

Solve : Let Windoqs10 find Realtek Drivers.?

Answer»

I go a little WIRELESS USB adapter super cheap. No documentation. Windows 7 had no idea, no clue at all. So I TRIED Windows 10.
Windows 10 found a drive and it WORKED right away. It says it found a
Realtek RTL8188EU WIRELESS
With that information, I was able to find a driver that WORKS on Windows XP and Windows 7. Too bad Windows 7 could not ID the chip.

So, this is good news. Windows 10 does a good job of finding drivers for things that are not LABELED. Now I feel better about Windows 10.

As someone dedicated to making 'old' hardware and software work, I ask myself: Do I need to CONSTANTLY update the drivers on my machine?
I dimly perceive the NECESSITY for CORRECT hardware drivers, but do they need constant updates??
CopasNo.

1) NEVER use 3rd party software to update drivers
2) Drivers should only be updated if / when there is a SPECIFIC need or reason to do so (ie, to address compatibility issues or new features offered that you need)

Yes, the integrated chipset has an NIC- but there are no Win7 drivers for it. But their third post mentions a "3com3c905c" Card. It was not clarified whether the adapter is installed in the system (A question I posed), but from what I was able to determine, it is an Ethernet adapter with Win7 drivers that could be used.

I suspect if it is installed then at some stage it was installed to workaround the integrated chipset NIC having no driver for Vista or later. Of course since it would have been added on afterwards it would not be surprising for HP not to have those drivers on the support pages!Quote HP not to have those drivers on the support pages!Quote

Reguardless this machines hard drive has multiple hidden exsisting partitions and it needs to be wiped with a program that will eliminate them, suggestion? Quote
Regardless this machines hard drive has multiple hidden existing partitions and it needs to be wiped with a program that will eliminate them, suggestion?

I have used Linux distros before to delete stubborn partitions. Boot up a Linux Mint DVD or Thumb Drive and then in the live environment look at the hard drive and delete the partitions. Make the drive then have no partitions and then shutdown Linux Mint and boot of Windows installation disc. Windows wil treat the hard drive as if its brand new with no partitions. *Years ago I had a stubborn HP computer that wouldnt allow me to dump a protected partition for the system restore partition even with delpart. But Linux disk/drive MANAGEMENT deleted it with no problems. The system came with Windows Me on a Celeron 500Mhz and I did not need Windows Me to exist on the drive as for I bought XP for it and installed that, and wanted full use of my hard drive without the Windows Me restore partition wasted space. Back then I used Redhat to dump the partition which was more involved than modern day linux Mint.

Other option might be this one, the free non commercial use edition, which might allow for you to delete these extra "hidden" partitions without destroying your windows installation. Back up any important data to an external storage before messing with any of this as for one wrong step and your data can be gone.: http://www.minitool.com/partition-manager/partition-wizard-home.html

Sorry its been a while but this program how exactly does it work, will rease the data while the machine is on ,like you install the program, then it erases the partitions?

Solve : PROBLEM - Wrong Refresh Rate?

Answer»

I've stumbled across a REALLY weird and specific issue yesterday, I opened up a game to try it out, but then my screen turned white and I had to turn it off, once I turned it back again, my monitor pops up a message saying that my Refresh Rate was wrong and it gave me it's number (53hz, I believe the original default was 60hz) and after the Windows logo, the screen turned black and I coudn't even reach the user selection screen, neither desktop after that (I use Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit by the way, and my graphics card is the AMD Radeon HD7700)

I did a LOT of research to find a SOLUTION, turns out it's a software issue, the game somehow changed my refresh rate values and the monitor can't handle it so it turns in to black whenever I go into Normal Mode, but I am able to use the computer just fine in Safe Mode OR when I disable the Video Driver in the Devices Manager screen, but the screen is filled with some strange jaggered lines and colors, but when I boot it into Normal Mode again the screen turns black like I mentioned above, here are a few links showing that similar issue up and how they solved it which is not working for me.
http://www.online-tech-tips.com/com...ter-changing-your-computers-display-settings/

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers...resh-rate-screen-resolution-black-screen.html

The solution a lot of people had with this issue is by GOING into VGA Mode (Or Low Resolution Mode) When you press F8 to open up the advanced boot options, the screen can show up again and the video driver can be detected on the Monitor Settings (to reach there press right click, resolution, advanced settings) In there, there is an option to change the refresh rate, but since I only can reach windows into safe mode or disabling the video driver in the normal mode, it won't detect my driver there to change it back to normal, neither I can open up my AMD Radeon Control Panel to change it since it says that it requires the video driver to be enabled to WORK, here are a couple of methods that I was hoping it could be possible.

If there is a CMD command that allows me to change the refresh rate, or a program that changes any values on the monitor/resolution which could allow me to change it back to 60hz like it was, or a way for me to use the computer with the video driver enabled without the screen being black entirely, yes I tried unninstalling my video driver completely and installing a new one, but no luck, the refresh rate is still the same and I coudn't find a fix, right now I'm typing on Normal Mode with it disabled so I can use the computer, but I can't do anything related to the video editing work I do.

I have no idea what to do and I really need to fix this, I use my computer to work. Can someone please post something here? I really can't spend too much time with the computer like this..

By the way here is a working link as example

Solve : Monitor won't display after I uninstalled video card drivers?

Answer»

There's a LOT to this story so I'll try to condense it as much as I can. A few days ago I was watching Netflix and my monitor suddenly went blank. I could still hear the show, so I unplugged and replugged the cords until it finally came on. This happened about 3 more times that day. The next day I turned on my computer and the monitor didn't come on. I did the same thing and it finally came on. It would go off randomly throughout the day just LIKE before. Now we get to today and the same thing happened l, except today I couldn't load any of the games I play. I tried to launch over watch and it told me my video card wasn't compatible. I tried to launch counter strike GLOBAL OFFENSIVE and it forced me to have the lowest settings possible. So I decided to update my drivers. I had been putting this off for some time just because everything seemed FINE. When the driver update would ask for permission from my computer my monitor would go blank and I would have to unplug and replug like before. If I tried to open task manager the monitor would go blank. A lot of the times when the monitor would go blank, icons would be moved around on my desktop and the programs already open, such as steam and battle net, would shrink. So anyways I was able to update my drivers and so I tried to open up over watch. Again nothing changed and my driver software says I still need to update. So I was browsing the Internet and someone had a detailed explanation on how to completely remove all graphic related drivers and reinstall them. So I decided to try this. I had to restart my computer to complete the first task which was simply uninstall the drivers. So I did and now no matter what I do nothing shows up on my monitor.

Specs:
AMD FX-8350 eight core processor
AMD r9 fury x gfx card
Gigabyte 970-gaming motherboard
Corsair vengeance 16 gb of ram
Either a 750 watt or 800 watt psu - rose will

I was on the irc chat earlier and the suggestions I had gotten there were to either plug in my older graphics card(Ati Radeon 5770) and connect my hdmi to dva cord into that or find a dva or the other kind of screw plug to display cord and connect that instead of the hdmi port. My monitor has both screw plug ports and an hdmi plug. The fury x only has hdmi and display ports.

So I don't know what happened but my monitor came on and I completed uninstalling and installing the video card drivers. Computer is working

Try it...I have and during the install you get an error saying that the drivers are for a 32 bit machine and then cancels out.

Solve : Display driver has stopped working - what can I do??

Answer»

Hello, I bought a new computer some months ago and at first I could play games fine, but when I started trying some other games those wouldn't work. Later, when I PLAYED more of some games, after a while they stopped working, saying "the display driver has stopped working", and now I found myself unable to play any game for any reasonable length of time.
Some, like for example Atilla Total War, I cannot even start to play them, I cannot get to the 3d.
I have Windows 10 64bits, a Nvidia Geforce GT730 and 8gb of RAM, and a microprocessor of 3.30 ghz. I have even trouble playing football games of 2009, after a while the pitch disappears and I cannot play any longer.
Any help would be inmensely appreciated.

I have tried increasing the response time, making sure I am using the dedicated graphics card and uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them (WHQL) with no change.

This is what the Windows event viewer says of the error;

Faulting application name: Attila.exe, version: 1.5.0.0, time stamp: 0x56675acc Faulting module name: Attila.dll, version: 1.5.0.0, time stamp: 0x56675ff9 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x01a88a22 Faulting process ID: 0x19a0 Faulting application start time: 0x01d20923f0b1cafc Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Total War Attila\Attila.exe Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Total War Attila\Attila.dll Report ID: 10aea5b5-8720-421f-af17-de31adfd74f2 Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID:

Solve : missing/out of date driver updates?

Answer»

I have free AVG & GOT the message that i have missing/out of date DRIVERS . are all these free to download ? And what about something called GOOGLE Analytics opt-out browser add-ons ? Never heard of it before. should I add this add-on ?
Thank you !1) There is essentially no such thing as an out of date driver. If everything is working fine, leave well enough alone. To find out if you are MISSING any drivers, open device manager. If there are no yellow or red symbols you're fine. Drivers should only be updated if there is a specific reason or need to do so.

2) Decide for yourself: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout If no such thing as an 'out of date/missing driver', why the message about it ? I checked device manager, saw no red/yellow symbols. And what is that Google Anayiltics opt-out browser ? What's going on here ?Quote from: BellaUSA on September 08, 2016, 02:41:06 PM

If no such thing as an 'out of date/missing driver', why the message about it ?

Software can provide alerts and messages about anything it wants to. For whatever reason AVG (it seems) decided it would be a good idea to exploit people's lack of technical knowledge and trust of their software to try to market other components they sell. It cannot be a coincidence that AVG ALSO provides useless "Driver Updater" software.

If there are no symbols in Device Manager, then you are not missing drivers; And as drivers do not have a best before date, they cannot go out of date, either.

And what is that Google Anayiltics opt-out browser ?

If you want to opt out of Google Analytics Tracking, you install the browser add-on.

Solve : ATI Radeon / Windows 7 problem?

Answer»

After downloading nad installing the latest drivers for my Sapphire 5750 I am unable to change my screen resolution. whenever I TRY to cange it from the default 1680x1050 Windows 7 goes into sleep mode and will not wake up. This is a terrible fate for old eyes! You could roll back the driver update. Do you need the latest vid drivers to play a certain game or are you just wanting the latest drivers. I don't usually update my vid drivers UNLESS theres a v good reason to.
Also did you get the drivers from your video card manufacturer's site or the ati site? Try the manufacturers driver set first I'd say. Sometimes they make small changes to the ref design and you are better to get it from them. If this does'nt help I'am sure someone else on the forum will correct me or offer a better solution, there's some very brainy people floating around on this forum. (Not including me. LOL) Now I've went and done it...... I unistalled the driver via the Device Manager, then I went to the Control Panel Progams Options (Add/Remove Programs) and uninstalled the ATI Uninstaller, choosing Express Unistall all ATI Software. During the unistall Windows flashed a Blue Screen with an ERROR message but it was gone so quickly I didn't get to see the text. Now I get the startup screen and the system boot SOUND but that's it, all I get is a black screen. Like a dummy I didn't bother to make an emergency startup disk. You should be able to get into safe mode.

Tap F8 as the computer is starting. This will take you to the advanced startup screen. Choose Safe mode.

Let us know once you get this far. Had it in Safe Mode, I put the original driver CD in and started to install the original drivers, however 7 said that it failed to initialize installation.Maaaaaan, once I get this ting up and running again I ain't gonna bother with updating drivers!Go back into safe mode. Go to Device manager: Start --> Run --> devmgmt.msc and press enter. Then right click on your video card and select properties. In the properties windows click the driver tab. Now select roll back driver. Thanx for the help. I finally got flusterred and just popped in the Windows 7 DVD and reinstalled. I didn't have any data on that installation anyway. This time I used the driver CD that came with my grahics card.
Whaddya know, it works just great. I was able to choose my screen resolution and it worked just fine!
God bless you folks that put up with us less asstute in the Deep Geek arts. Have a great night!

Solve : What USB driver do I need??

Answer»

I have a compaq presario computer 4100CA, RUNNING windows me.
The USB is not working
Info on USB ... intel (R) 82801AA
If I click on device MANAGER I am promted with (this device is working properly)

I would like to know if I need a driver, what driver I need and where can I get it?
TIAWhat device is not working (just one usb device or all devices)? Have you tried different usb ports?I have tried the two ports many times. both of them will not work.
Everything else is working ok.
On device manager, I click on three usb ROOT hub ,host controler etc. I always get (this device is workin properly)Again, is it one usb device that is not working or do no usb devices work? And did the usb ports ever work?No USB ever worked.
This computer was GIVEN to me. I have reloaded it from scratch on a formated hard drive several times.
If there was something wrong with the motherboard, I don`t think I would be prompted with (this device is working properly)
Is it possible that I need a driver for it?You should have said it was a new install right off the bat. You need to install the chipset driver. The USB did not work when I got the computer, even before I started it from scratch. It still will not work when I install the original hard drive. Every thing else seems to work OK.
I have another compaq computer model 5WV257 and I have reloaded it from scratch too, and it is running OK even the USB.
This is a hobby for me.
If I need a chipset driver, I would like to know what it is, and where can I gat it.

Thank you very much. The chipset driver should have been provided on a cd with the computer. Otherwise go to the website of the chipset manufacturer or here: http://www.nodevice.com/driver/category/Chipset.html

It should be the FIRST driver installed after the OS is installed.HP Customer Care

Solve : cd/dvd driver missing??

Answer»

I have purchased an asus laptop with WINDOWS 10 already installed. However, it seems no disc, cd or dvd, works. Any disc put in seems to spin for a moment, then it becomes quiet. I have noticed under device manager cd/dvd DRIVE does not appear and My Computer only lists local disc C. There is a pioneer dvd-rw dvrtd11rs under disk drives which says it's working properly. Something else I've noticed is when trying to use vlc player, the disc device has no LETTER selected and the MESSAGES your input cannot be opened and can't open mrl dvd appear. Is there a way to fix this or do I have to DOWNLOAD a cd/dvd driver? If so, what's the best way?Is this a new or used laptop ? ?
CD drives haven't required drivers since Win 98I believe it is new and not used. From the sounds of it the DVD drive is dead and needs to be replaced.

Check the BIOS and make sure that has not been disable there.

Solve : Files disappeared when passing them to a now-exFAT USB. Only have CHK files.?

Answer»

Hello. I’ve been stuck in a predicament for almost a week, day and night, for hours to end, and NOTHING. I’m going insane! I really hope you guys can help me! Here I have a description on the situation, what happened before after and during. Brace yourself, it’s a little LENGTHY… but hopefully, I give you enough information to solve this. I’ve reached a dead end.

So, I bought a USB drive of 1tb from somewhere in China (never doing THAT again) through the WISH app. I also recently purchased a new laptop and decided to use this drive to transfer all my files at once from an old laptop to the new one. So I’m copying all possible files to this USB drive, but for some unknown reason, I decide to CUT the most important file in my possession instead of copying it. As they were transferring, I noticed that the files were disappearing from the origin folder (something normal obviously, since I was cutting and pasting). I could see the transfer window and the progress and all. The weird part was that I couldn’t see the files ON the USB drive as they were transferring, like one normally does. There was nothing there as it transferred. I paid no mind to it because I thought it might appear once it was all done.

Since it was relatively LATE and I had to work early the next day, I decided to cancel the progress, thinking that I would AT LEAST have a few files in the USB when I continued the next day. And then there was nothing. I could see the folder, but no files in it. I checked the box to “view hidden files and folder”, but nothing appeared. I was freaking out, because the most important folder had disappeared from both my old laptop and the USB. It is as if most of the files transferred from the old laptop but VANISHED and never made it to the USB. I can’t find it ANYWHERE. There are a few folders in the USB from other files I was transferring at the same time, but they are all EMPTY. Nothing transferred. Each folder I was transferring should have 2 or 3 gb’s worth of content, yet in the USB they are ALL EMPTY. When I highlight all the contents in the USB to see the space it is taking, it says 13gb…. But when I check the drive’s available space (at My Computer), it says that around 20gb’s worth of space is being occupied. Which means my files are THERE, SOMEWHERE, but I can’t get them or see them.

Not only that, it recommended a scan, but it froze, so I used the task manager on it and ended it. Next thing I know, the USB became an exFAT drive or something. I tried researching on how to fix it, and it says to format it or restore it… which I DON’T want to do, since my files are in there somewhere and I don’t want to lose them. As I said, I started a cut and paste process, therefore, 90% of my files are in that drive. I only have 10% in my old laptop and no other backup (a rookie mistake, I know).
I downloaded COUNTLESS of programs to recover lost data, but they either charge or simply say that they don’t support exFAT. I also researched forums and tinkled with the cmd PROMPT and managed to do something different. Two folders were created in the USB drive that say FOUND 000, in it, there are several chk files which I assume are my lost files. The problem is that I have no clue on how to proceed from here.

I read somewhere that the “best” option is to remove my files (cut) from the USB, paste them somewhere safe, format the USB drive and paste it back into it. I have not done that yet, since my concern is mainly about the lost files (or invisible ones?). How do I know if these lost files are also moving with the rest as I do that?

I hope I was clear enough explaining this bizarre problem. I’ve been trying to solve it for almost a week, and nothing. I’m desperate. I would GREATLY appreciate the help! Thanks in advance, and I apologize for the ENORMOUS description.
My computer is Windows 7, core intel i3, 64-bit if I’m not mistaken. USB was bought online. 1tb. The USB has no brand (should’ve been a red flag, in retrospect).

I don’t know if it’s important, but one of the messages that appeared was something about a “volume dirty bit” or something. Also, a folder was created inside named “System Volume Information”, with two files inside (a DAT file named WPSettings and VolumeIndexerGuid) and I have no idea what to with them or if they are important at all.

There was also a recommendation in one of the forums to rename the CHK files, but as it turns out, some of the CHK files are 2 or 3 gb, which is why I believe they’re my lost files. I would at least like to view them, to see if they are, in fact, what I’m looking for. If they aren’t then I don’t have to go through the effort.

Also, I tried transferring a document in the same USB, and it said something about disk problem or a problem with the document, meaning that the USB is corrupted or infected or something. I don’t care much for the USB, I might even throw it out or burn it afterwards, but I want to save my files. Trust me, I’ve learnt my lesson.

If you want to know what programs I’ve been using so far: TRC Data Recovery, DDR Pen Drive Recovery, Wondershare, Pandora Recovery, DYI Data Recovery, CHK File Recovery, Yodot Recovery Software, EaseUs Data Recovery Wizard (takes too long and is charging me to SAVE the files) and CHK Back. They all “scan” my USB and work with my CHK files, but I never actually see the files I’m looking for. Most of the files I see weren’t even the ones that disappeared. It always shows the same documents (documents from college, which are very much present in the USB and visible), but it never shows the ones I lost in the process.

Again, I apologize for the lengthy description, but maybe I did something wrong or missed something that you might pick up. I’d appreciate the help! If you recommend anything, or if you recommend me continuing another practice I’ve already been doing, then let me know. Thank you in advance!
The Flash Drive you bought was likely a scam Flash drives. these are flash drives which use a controller chip that has been set to think it has far more storage than is actually available. So when you stick it in your computer it shows as a 1TB drive, however you can only store say 7.4GB of data before it starts screwing up.

If you want to look at the CHK files, on the command prompt you can use

CODE: [Select]type file.chk
when in the appropriate found.000 folder to TRY to get an idea of the contents. (use the Pause key to stop the scrolling). That's a lot of data to watch scroll by though, and it won't be in a particularly readable format if the files were anything other than text files.

It doesn't help but about 10 years ago I lost a good 5 years worth of work which I foolishly only had on a Flash drive when the Flash Drive failed. Thanks BC_Programmer for your reply! Do you think the files are lost forever then? Or do you think it's worth the effort going through the command prompt process? I tried avoiding using command because I read somewhere that it could actually delete all.

Also, how do I know my USB drive is one of those scam USBs? Is there a way to tell?Your best best would be to try to recover them from the drive you cut and pasted them from, and not bother with the Flash Drive, The way tsuch drives work is they'll write to the first 4GB but after that there is no more memory and it just claims it wrote the data it was told to and doesn't do anything. So cut and pasting would copy it to the drive, the drive doesn't actually write anything and just goes "yep, all written now, totally" and the OS deletes the original.

>Also, how do I know my USB drive is one of those scam USBs? Is there a way to tell?

1TB Flash Drives go for about $500 or more, so unless you paid that much it is a pretty good way to tell.

Solve : My computer won't acknowledge the DVD drive?

Answer»

I have an HP ENVY x360 that uses Windows 10 64-bit. For the last three months I've used an external DVD drive and the DVD Player app to watch movies without any difficulty. However, when I inserted a DVD earlier today, the little message asking me what I want to do didn't pop up. The DVD spun for a MINUTE and then stopped. When I PULLED up DVD Player, it acted like I hadn't inserted the DVD. File Explorer doesn't acknowledge the DVD drive. What should I do?Did you try a different disc. Some are protected from piracy and dont PLAY on computers.I did, but the computer didn't recognize that one either. Anyway, the first disc worked yesterday, so I don't think that's the case. You can try a drive cleaning disc. It spins up and cleans the eye inside that reads the reflected laser beam off the disc. You can also try the drive on a different system to make sure its the drive and not a driver issue with the system connecting to it since its an external drive. The good thing is that external USB drives are pretty cheap these days, around $20 if you had to REPLACE it.
