Solve : Put your vote in about the Off topic games section?

Answer»

It is a bit complicated to moderate, in my opinion, when it comes to having to click once, twice, three times, four times just to get to the board...
I dont know, child boards are okay, but, child child boards just are a bit... (INSERT a few more "Dot dot dot"'s here) Quote

10 or more votes is only for GAMES, not whole off topic section right?

Correct, this vote is just for the games section, the off topic section will be left alone.

Quote
it would be easy to move them all into the Off Topic section

Yep, would definately be easy, however I really believe that if they were moved into the off topic section they would take over that section and we'd end up creating the games section again. I know it was originally created because when looking at the off topic page the games were taking over most of the first page. So I'm really against doing this.

Quote
Well i vote we move the Driver's section there as well.

Ahh sarcasm. If really an issue we could think about migrating it or doing something about. Open to reasonable suggestions.

..

Leaving this open for a few more days action will probably take place at the beginning of November.i think you should keep iti think it should be kept too but i VOTED "Only allow users with 10 or more posts" because keep it is too far behind. If i voted keep it, that would be one vote closer to removing it.so technically thats a total of 22 votes to keep and 10 to removebut keep and 10+ are not added... they are separate...but to technicly keep the section 10+ or notVotes to keep it= 6
Votes to keep it and let only users with 10+ posts vote = 17

and

Votes to remove it= 10

So practically votes to keep the games section are more. Even though it might mean only users with only 10+ posts can view it. Quote from: Ivy on November 04, 2008, 09:03:46 PM

When is he GOING to end this thread?Looks like we have a winner. Have made the changes so only Rookie (10+ posts) and above can access the games section.its a good thing i have more than that!!

Well he has no use for the EULA agreements....probably why he doesn't know this EITHER.

True..He's talking about WGA... it's a completely unnecessary "UPDATE" that used to be classed as a "critical" update, that provided absolutely no functionality other then examining the PC and sending information back to MS on it (or maybe it simply notified the user itself that it was possibly counterfeit, I can't remember all the specifics)

nonetheless is caused such a furor that MS reduced it to a "Important" update.

The windows update program, which examines the local PC to see what can be updated, runs on the local machine- in a similar FASHION to minesweeper. WGA, onb the other hand, would for most PCs be installed and run silently by pushing it through their update system, despite it being completely unnecessary from the perspective of the end-user.Still hardly spyware when it's from MS. Microsoft is not above privacy laws...

their EULA cannot, under any circumstances, remove rights a person holds from their country's constitution.

By the same (if not an extreme example) If you sign a "waiver" for a person to kill you, and they do- they are still on the hook for murder, because it's considered a crime against society rather then an individual.

Once you start eroding the rights of the people it breaks down exponentially- this is why the idea is that citizens have certain INALIENABLE human rights, that cannot be REMOVED, via agreement, EULA, or otherwise. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 30, 2009, 10:10:14 AM

thank you bc_programmerThe British courts have struck down "shrink wrap" EULAs, that is, an end user licence agreement that you cannot read and decide to accept or reject until you have opened the pack. In fact many of them may be illegal (in the sense of "having no force") under The Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 (SI 1999 No 2083) which provide that...  "a term which has not been individually negotiated in a consumer contract is unfair (and hence non-binding on the consumer) if, contrary to the requirement of good faith, it causes a significant imbalance in the rights and obligations of the parties to the detriment of the consumer."

Solve : iPhoneeeeeeeeeeeeeee! :D?

Answer»

I guess I would be in category #4.

Unimportant self employed business person who needs to be reachable wherever I am. A missed call has a very high probability that it would result in missed income.

I don't need a smart phone. But when you have an upgrade that LET's you get a $500.00 phone for $49.99.... Why not?Meh, got it 5 days ago and joined the iPhone hype. Love it. Just really nice to use. Got all the things I want, minus a decent camera, small price to pay there though as far as im concerned. Do miss the camera on my W995 though, still got that though so when I go out on a night out and theres a decent act performing somewhere in Sheffield, I just take that.
As for the Blackberry, I just think they're unbelievably boring. Every other person around me has either a Blackberry or an iPhone, and all the Blackberry people seem to do it complain about how expensive the apps are and how simple and limmited it is. Only plus side I can see is Blackberry messenger. Though each to their own!

there are two kinds of people in the world that have cellphones- Important business people that need to be available all the time, or people who like to pretend that they are important business people, and have lucid dreams where people will actually need to contact them at any point in the day.

Actually, there is a third category that just wants the new cool thing that's available. The items function is irrelevant. If Apple made a kickass vacuum I'm sure that there would be groups of teenagers gathering outside Apple stores chanting "iSuck, iSuck,iSuck"

I would agree, but I just have one so I can have phone access.  Cell phone service costs about as much as a landline (with unlimited long distance, which I would need), so I go for the option that also gives me a way to call in the event of an emergency when I'm out of the house.  It's also handy to have a portable calendar and alarm clock.  I personally really dislike the idea of being available at any given time, which is why I ignore nearly all calls when I'm not in the mood to talk.  If it's important, they'll leave a voicemail. That might have been true 20 years ago, but now days when most 10 or 12 year olds have a cell phone it's not really a status symbol anymore.  It's just a part of every day life now. It's still true. Exchanging the text "lol" between cellphones that are 5 feet apart via a waystation 10 miles away is CALLED "vanity" not everyday life.Frankly, I have never understood texting by most adults.  Kids started texting because they were in school, and not allowed to have cell phones on.  Just a new way to pass notes in class.  Adults started texting mainly just because their kids were doing it, and they wanted to be cool.

If I want to communicate with some one I call them.  If they can't answer I leave a voice message which can be a lot more detailed than a text message, and don't have to worry about misspellings.

Maybe Twitter, but that's about it (and that's questionable in most cases). Quote from: rthompson80819 on March 14, 2010, 08:49:34 PM

I've had a mobile phone now for the past 13yrs and have always text people. I find it quite liberating not having to cut off a friend that I'm having a beer in the pub with to answer a call. My phone lets me look at a short message whilst still communicating with the person in front of me and then I choose whether or not it warrants an immediate response. If not the phone is back in my pocket and my 'real life' conversation continues.
I like most men 'disregarding popular belief' can multitask so my QUICK text back is made whilst still continuing the conversation with said friend.
There is nothing worse than sitting in the pub with a mate and they say 'oh hang whilst I answer this' then you sit there like a muppet staring at the walls listening to half a conversation.
Texting like most things has it's place and is not just for kids. It's a social must in my book.
I will even ignore a call in company and sent a quick 'call you later' text.

That's my humble opinion anyway.

That's a good opinion.  EVER since cell phones became small enough to wear on your belt, (I carry mine in my pocket now), I've always set it to vibrate, and answer it when I feel like it.  Just because it rings doesn't mean you have to drop every thing else going on. There is something inherent in all of us, the vibrate for a message is two short buzzes usually and a call is repetitive long buzzes. The text can be ignored for a more opportune moment but the Incessant buzzing of a call has us all itching to look at the screen.
I don't disagree with you in the lack of human contact txt's produce but I think you should not COMPLETELY sell them out

What happened to that Terminator you were gonna get? The  Roketa MC-56Dead Reckon, were you thinking about getting a Roketa MC-56??!! Are you man enough to handle 50cc? (The Terminator ) That 'cycle will come soon enough, probably before my license. It doesn't need anything but a permanent tag so the dense police officers around here with NOTHING to do don't have to pull me over to make sure I'm over 16. The Rocketa isn't anything special, I won't have it for long, its just that I'd rather be on a minimotorcycle than some stupid moped. I plan to stroke it to 73CC, that would make it require tags, if they knew...

As for the Cutlass though, I'm not a fan of flashy CHROME, and that rocker trim, its held on by plastic clips which sit in the body. The holes they sit in rot out unless you remove the chrome (which is impossible without breaking said clips) regularly to treat the paint under the chrome. That, and crap gets up under the chrome causing further rust in the rocker panels. Its just a bad idea overall.

As for your Mitsubishi Galant, I absolutely hate virtually every Japanese import except for Subaru's, and Nissan's. And that isn't to say that I'd likely own either. I don't care about modern bits and pieces like electronic fuel injection, electronic climate control, GPS, or any of that crap. If I want GPS I'll buy some piece of crap, make a mount so it clamps to the rear view mirror, or clips on the cigarette lighter, and be done with it. The only time I'll need a GPS is if I goto somewhere like the Eastern end of this state. They steal, swap, shoot, and otherwise violate the roadsigns over there.

When I get a vehicle I'm probably just going to hang onto the Rocketa and bide my time by getting a fixer upper, like a cutlass. I know where I can get several such cars like this one:

Sure, its beat to *censored*, needs everything from paint to a mechanical rebuild, but I'd rather build one myself. It'll take several years and the cost of a "new" car to build but *censored*, that's the fun of it. That particular cutlass was supposed to be mine until my fathers neighbor's mother in law complained about it sitting there.

The main reason I don't want all that flashy chrome is because, to put it simply, I don't like flashy cars. I'll probably paint the cutlass midnight blue, bumpers and all. Only have a bit of chrome on the wheels, wheel arches, around the window trim, the antenna, bit around the headlights and grilles, bit around the brake lights, but not much chrome really, just a few bits here and there to accent the body lines. I like subliminal cars, ones that don't stand out unless your looking for them.
Trust me, if I had a chance to go back to the DAY I bought the Galant, i'd WALK off the dealership's lot. I regret buying it everyday. I envy my friends that have 80's era vehicles that have fixed them up. Don't get me wrong, my car is a decent, reliable vehicle, and i'm hoping i'll be able to get 200,000 miles out of it. The only reason I bought it was because I needed a reliable car that was good on gas mileage, and I wouldn't have to worry about repairs every other week. But you live and learn right?

I completely agree with you on the chrome thing. I'm not a fan of tons of it either. But I would have to say i'd like to have the bumpers dipped. Maybe some nice chrome wheels too. Not the 28's that you see now days, but maybe some sporty looking 16's. The SS wheels are very nice looking too. I'll probably end up buying a cutlass very similar to the one in your previous post. One in better condition than the red one up there, but something I can put some TLC into and take my time with.Yeah, the TLC is what makes it YOUR car, not just one you bought and call your own. I don't like modern vehicles because I know absolutely nothing about electronically managed fuel injected emission stiffed and electronically nannied cars.

I do, however, know a bit about cars with carburetors. I prefer the harsh rough rumble of a four barrel V8 versus the smooth silky idle of a fuel injected V8. I like popping the hood and seeing two large chromed heads with a matching and equally gaudy, possibly grease stained chromed air filter can.

I plan to run 15x7" SS2's in the front and 15x10" SS2's in the rear, not going to jack the rear up but an inch or two, the bigger tires will need a lil to fit. I only want a slight hot rod angle to it. I also plan to set it up with a dual 3 or 3.5" system, split the manifold into two halves, run two pipes straight off to two mufflers, then run a bend straight out the sides or to the pavement, probably out the sides infront of the rear tires. Its legal here 'cause the car is over 25 years old without  even having antique registration. I'll probably use a 350 turned into a 383 stroker cranking about 450-500HP in the end.

To start off though, I'll use a 305 or 307 5L V8. Aside from the loud exhaust, slight hot rod stance and fat tires in the rear, noone will have a clue this car is anything more than a bunch of show when I'm done. I don't plan to use a supercharger, that isn't needed if its tuned right. I've seen those 383 strokers break 600HP. If I start out with a 307 I don't expect to get more than 250HP out of it, if I've got a 305 I might be able to COAX 300HP out of it. Its just a matter of throwing the right bits on and a whole lot of tuning 'em to WORK. The thing I'm worried most about is the transmission. A cooler will be required on the transmission. I also plan to use borrowed parts like the 11" rotors from a blazer or something similar. They'll fit on with modification, most of it is a whole lot of square pegs in round holes. It'll be fun though, give me something to spend my time and energy on.

We remember...Guest posting has its good sides, but the worst side is:
SPAM Bots that can get past  the CAPATCHA images. (Obscufated images)

Then, there are abusers, who post and post.
Then there are the people that dont understand that its not an email system, but truth be told, a lot of the REGISTERED users think of it that way.

But you get more posts, and more users involved, and more people with a face
(but then again, the SPAM bots came with  's on their NON-existent faces...)

Being as literal as POSSIBLE:
The more users, the busier I keep myself...

It is such a PAIN to register to websites. You always have to worry about Spam, and about keeping track of it, and logging in. Some people just come here once, and then leave. You could not just enable it on one newly created board, since it would not be categorized. (And there is enough non categorized problems already. It could be a guest board, and then if it gets approved, it can be moved out.)

There are LOT of things to consider....as always trailing off TOPIC in the off topic board lol...

Solve : driver question?

Answer»

When using the "update driver" feature in Device Manager, to update a hardware driver, where does Windows look for the driver?  Does Windows search the manufacturer's data base of the device or does Windows get the driver from SOMEWHERE else?  Never thought too MUCH about it, ALTHOUGH I have downloaded driver updates directly from Intel, that the "update driver" feature would not locate..Unless I'm mistaken it searches its own database of WHQL drivers. It does not go out to OEM sites. Quote from: ALLAN on February 08, 2010, 01:12:16 PM

WHQL drivers

ahh..   that makes sense.   So the "update driver" utility uses only signed drivers in a database..

Solve : Solid State Drive...?

Answer»

I was doing a little window shopping at newegg and seen some of their deals on SSD's. I was wondering if anyone here owns one? I was also wondering if it's really worth paying that much for one. I seen a 120GB SSD, for $1,349.00!!! I mean seriously. Is it really worth it? Does it really save that much time? Even if you're a business owner and you rely on the speed of your computer to keep things on schedule, is it really worth it in the long run? Personally I think i'll wait until the price comes down drastically before I consider purchasing one. Just my two cents. No, not worth it. No today.

Users that need high performance and will spend money for it will go for quad core CPU, with 64 bit OS. And lots of RAM like 8GB or more.

For Hard drive they will buy six high end 250 GB drives. Install 5 in a RAID and keep one as a spare. Pricey? Yes, but it has a proven track record.

But the Solid State drive could prove to be a winner a little later on.

Meanwhile, the magnetic spinning storage makes are looking for ways to boost performance. No new announcements yet. But real soon.
http://www.storagereview.com/I'll just stick to my WD VelociRaptor 10,000 RPM HDD's. No where near as fast at reading, but not too much SLOWER at writing.Depends on the make/model of the drive.
A decent SSD, such as the Intel X25 series, offers a massive performance boost from any mechanical drive.
The main advantage is the total lack of seek time.  Even with Raptors or enterprise level 15k rpm drives, there's still a seek time of (being generous) ~4ms or more.  An SSD has no seek time, so data stored anywhere on the drive is instantly accessible.  Sequential read/write transfer rates may not be much higher than some mechanical drives, or may even be a little lower, so SSDs aren't necessarily better if all you want to do is load large contiguous files one after another.  But for real world usage, SSDs are night and day over hard drives.
The price is still high, not sure what kind of 120GB SSD retails for $1349 (maybe an enterprise model?) but for many people the performance is worth the price and tradeoff in storage space.
Just my opinion anyway One of the things I've seen is a combination of SSD and standard HDs.  The SSD is much smaller and more affordable than the one mentioned above and the standard HD is used for bulk storage.  The SSD could be used for frequently used programs and frequently used data storage, and the HD used for less frequently used stuff.

I don't have any hard numbers, but I'm willing to guess that 90% of what's on our HDs only gets used occasionally, the the other 10% is used frequently. QUOTE from: rthompson80819 on January 28, 2010, 02:58:55 PM

Seek times are on the order of 100us (100 times faster), low power consumption is another big plus, as prices drop all laptops will have them as the primary drive.

I see what you're saying, I just think they're too pricey, still. I think with time the price will come down, but until then it's basically the same thing as paying $60/mo for a 10Mb/s internet connection, when you could get 8Mb/s for $25/mo. Yeah, i'm guessing they didn't know what kind of price tag to put on storage, so a dollar per MB sounded good. Such quick advances in technology has changed that dramatically. As with just about all technology. Quote from: patio on January 28, 2010, 05:52:31 PM

Depends how you define "seek time".  I've always heard and though of seek time as the time for the head on a mechanical drive to move from the data it's currently reading to the next chunk of data.  This obviously varies depending on where the chunks are on the disk, therefore the commonly quoted "seek time" is almost always in actuality "average seek time".
By the definition I've always used and seen used, SSDs have no seek time, due to them not having a read/write head.
Of course if your definition isn't the same as mine, that's perfectly fine, I'm not saying mine is correct or the only valid definition of the term.
Hope this clarifies my post

Quote from: computeruler on January 28, 2010, 08:48:15 PM

Can I ask ... how's that?  I could see boot time depending to a certain extent on the motherboard and peripherals, as some boards do take longer to POST and of course some peripherals and settings (RAID cards and boot priority respectively come to mind) will affect the time it takes before an OS starts loading, but I can't see how a motherboard would affect shutdown times.

As you said, it is your opinion.  Have you by any chance used an SSD yet?  I wasn't convinced until I tried one for myself, and I've never looked back.Your hardware definition of seek time is correct.
But since we are discussing SSD drives with no hardware involved to me the seek time would be how long it is before the data is shown after it is requested.

If you use Vista and right click on "computer" and click "properties" you'll notice a "rating" score.  Mine is 4.3  Your score can be updated if you upgrade your hardware and clicking on the "Windows Experience Index" to test your hardware performance..

I'm tempted to upgrade to Windows 7 just to SEE how much higher it will go.... 5.9 is the maximum it will go for Vista.Eh, my 2 1/2 year old laptop only shows 2.3.  .  Video is the factor holding it down.  Nothing I can do about that, but it's not a big issue.  For my usage, it runs fine with Vista Home Premium and 2GB of RAM.

Solve : ATT billing fraud? Coming soon??

Answer» ATT billing fraud? Coming soon?

That headline should get your attention. But there is a serious problem going on and it does implicate the big phone company, but it really is smaller COMPANIES that are doing the scamming. Yet the big company has known about this for a time a should have put a stop to it by now.

Now to understand what I am talking about I'm going to ask members to please check your recent phone bill from ATT and see if there are some charges for services that you do not recognize. One you might look for is from a service called d" voice nett " spilled that's one word.
They also go by the name of USBI and if you do a search you will find they are named in many billing errors that have occurred on telephone billing statements in the past few months.
So then, my question is this: have you RECENTLY found unsolicited services being added to your phone bill? Also, how come your local phone company does not put a stop to this?
http://www.ripoffreport.com/Telephone-Companies/VoiceNet-Telephone/voicenet-telephone-scam-usbi-c-24m68.htm

EDIT: My bad, please more this to "Other".Since it is not AT&T actually doing this your Topic title could be considered slander.

Just a heads up.Thank you Patio.
Disclaimer: The headline is a question. There have be numerous complaints against USBI, a third part company that is allowed to use the  ATT billing system. Hopefully this has been FIXED by now.

Many of us have DSL via ATT and if we cut off ATT we have to go find a ISP in out area. In some areas this is hard to do. Some will opt to just pay WHATEVER the phone company, ATT, asks on the bill. Is this not extortion?

Try this: Google USBI
There is a class action suit sponsor of Google on the sidebar!

By the Way. Will you please move this to the the proper place in the forum.

How could I make such a mistake?
I am making the same plea ATT makes.

Solve : Thermite+Ice=Boom??

Answer»

Yes. And mythbusters proved it, too! Curius? I was too until I did a little bit of digging and found this:
Quote

…the molten iron produced will extract oxygen from water and generate hydrogen GAS in a single-replacement REACTION. This gas may, in turn, burn by combining with oxygen in the air.

So it converts (a part of) the ice to hydrogen and oxygen and creates a massive explosion. The explosion can actually be so sudden that and forceful pieces CHUNKS of ice can launch upwards over 150 feet from the initial blast site.

Pretty insane right? At first I thought it would evaporate the ice almost instantaneously...and then BOOM! An explosion! The same principle is applied when heat treating certain METALS. Especially metals that are high in iron content. The metal it heated to tempuratures that almost reach their melting point, and they are then quenched in a variety of ways. Most INCLUDE oils and salt baths. But some are quenched in water. If the temperature of the metal is too high, as soon as it is submerged into the water, BOOM! This should only happen if the metal was heated to a much higher TEMP than most heat treating methods require, but it has happened.Did Kari have the baby yet ? ? Solve : Tire Fitting Gone Wrong?

Answer»

Hey guys, get a load of this!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fO9M6W6XxMMWell tires like those would have air at a very high pressure, which would explain the EXPLOSION...That wasn't necessarily an explosion. And you can see that the tire is deflated, it's just still on the rim. They were using ether/starting fluid in an attempt to seat the tire onto the rim. A good way to lose your eyebrows. This used to be common practice with truck and tractor tires. Today we have safer ways of doing it.I don't think I want to take my car to get fixed by those guys. Wrong kind of starting fluid. This starting fluid is the starting fluid you use on a car or truck engine in cold weather to make it start easier.
Quote from: soybean on January 29, 2010, 05:48:46 PM
How does that help seat the tire on the rim?
In a tubeless tire application all that actually holds the tire onto the rim is the air pressure inside. When a tire has been lying around the beads of the tire come together so that when the tire is mounted on the rim the beads of the tire don't come out to contact the surface of the rim, so a large blast of air is needed to quickly expand the tire and make it contact the rim so the air will not leak out between the tire and the rim. This was accomplished by spraying a generous amount of ether into the tire and throwing a match in to cause a quick explosion (sudden expansion of air). Today the most common method of doing this is with a large air TANK with a large outlet held at the edge of the tire with a VALVE to quickly release the air pressure from the tank into the tire.

Solve : energy and cost savings in Northern Ireland ( not spam )?

Answer»

A new Government scheme to get businesses to cut their emissions could spell the end of the all-night bright lights of the local high street, the Environment Agency (EA) has predicted.

Flat screen TVs, illuminated signs and brightly-lit window displays could all be switched off - instead of being left on overnight when shops and businesses are closed - as companies respond to the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) scheme.

The scheme will require businesses to record their energy use and from next year, pay by the tonne for the carbon they emit.

Around 5,000 firms which use more than 6,000MWh of electricity a year - equivalent to bills of around £500,000 - must register for the energy efficiency scheme between April and September this year.

When the scheme is up and running, the Environment Agency will publish an annual league table of the best and worst performers under the CRC - with the top energy savers getting financial rewards and the worst companies being penalised.

With major supermarkets, clothing retailers and restaurant chains among the big energy users who will have to take part, the days of leaving doors open to encourage customers in and leaving lights on all night could be over, the EA said.

By improving energy efficiency, the CRC could achieve emissions reductions of 11.6 million tonnes of CO2 a year by 2020, save participants money and boost green sectors of the economy, the agency said.

Tony Grayling, head of climate change and sustainable development at the Environment Agency, said: "The CRC is an OPPORTUNITY for large businesses and public sector organisations to play their part in reducing dangerous carbon emissions.

"But for businesses the main motivation to cut their energy use will be their bottom line. By cutting energy use businesses stand to benefit from lower energy bills, and could be financially rewarded through the CRC if they perform well in the energy efficiency stakes."

And he said: "Carbon reduction needn't be complicated or expensive; in most cases better management of heating, air conditioning and lighting will deliver immediate energy and cost savings."

It requires a lot of energy to keep all that stuff cold, especially if the refrigerators aren't very new. Sounds like raised prices for the consumer.prices will not go up its to make them save money , you did not get it ,  to make them turn unwanted lights etc; of at night when not being used you drive past many stores , shops etc and the lights etc are on Actually, I've noticed that some local stores here in Ohio do turn down lights at night.  I'm not aware of any legal requirement for them to do so.  Therefore, I believe it's just a matter of them wanting to reduce operating expenses.

Even though you missed the point of harry 48's topic, you raise an interesting point, one that's related to energy consumption.  Sometimes, when I'm in the local supermarket (KROGER) and I see meats, milk, fruit juice, etc., in open refrigeration units, I can't help thinking their energy costs must be huge and that there must be a better way to display such items.    Quote from: soybean on January 31, 2010, 01:30:51 PM

He's on Smash Brothers Brawl too!

But I believe that is the Japanese version being represented for some reason (colour scheme of white and red like the japanese console)

Personally I think it's silly to have him as a character on that, I mean, seriously, have they USED him for real? he takes ages just to push a button, I doubt he'll be able to be a very potent fighter.

And yes helpmeh! the fact that he's on a racing game as a playable character is not just funny, it's downright ridiculous. It's like they ran out of ideas or something, akin to the later megaman games. I mean, seriously, once you make "yamato man" you've PRETTY much confirmed that your out of good ideas.

from what I can tell of the two games that he was used with (gyromite and stack up I believe they were called) they Nintendo seems to have taken two games they had in development and just moved the b button function to the second controller and then tossed in a few specifics that make the game a complete pain in the but with him. your sitting there waiting for him to raise the BAR, and an enemy is coming towards you, and ol' ROB takes his sweet-*censored* time pushing the button. Solve : What Temperature does your CPU idle at??

Answer»

What temperature (in FAHRENHEIT) does your CPU idle at?

Currently, mine is at 68F, so its Chilled.

And for the record, I have seen machines idle as high as 200F, albeit, they where damaged by that, often dieing, but I've seen 'em do it due the fact that they had more dust in 'em than a vacuum.my four cores are at 68,55,53,58 (c) respectively.

I'm lazy so I wrote a BCScript(tm) to turn it into fahrenheit:

Code: [Select]STORE(Tc,{68,55,53,58}AVERAGE());
STORE(Tf,(9/5)*Tc+32);
Tf;

so the average was 137.3 degrees fahrenheit.

or I could have just said:

Code: [Select]((9/5)*{68,55,53,58}+32)Average()

which gives me the same result. Sorry I've been working on BCScript a bit too much lately.

Now, OTOH, I do have fallout 3 running in the background... it doesn't appear to be using any CPU THOUGH, so I dunno if it affected the result from speedfan.

200F sounds like around 80(c) which is around where my old k6-2 would often get to. But only when I was playing Duke3d and ONLY on the second BOSS level, Overlord. no idea why.

Core 1 37C
Core 2 37C
Core 3 33C
Core 4 36CI've noticed the "CPU Diode" is lower than the core temps, Core 1 is at 81, core 2 is at 82, I should note that this motherboard throttles the CPU from 2808MHz to 1532MHz (I can't, for some reason make those into a decimal number with my brain). My CPU is overclocked from 2.2GHz, its a Core 2 Duo E4500, I think. I'm using a Tuniq tower 120 heatsink, and there are a total of eleven fans in my case counting the PSU fan.

1 120mm front intake (kinda pathetic but it does the job)
1 80mm top exhaust
1 120mm PSU fan
1 120mm CPU fan
1 40mm north bridge fan
1 50mm south bridge fan
1 20mm mosfet
1 70mm GPU fan
2x 80mm side intake fans
1 80mm rear exhaust

The only thing I can complain about is the case, its a god awfully ugly Sunbeam Transformer case. I got it for a TRADE, traded that Dell Inspiron 1720 notebook for this rig.

Oh, and be sure to VOTE. Quote

This is the forecast for where I live for the week:

Cloudy, rain, frozen rain, more rain, more clouds... I haven't seen sunlight in about a week as it stands. Although, noone really COMES out if its raining, which is a plus, I'm not really a PEOPLE person. Though, the sound of the rain might drive me insane, I think my stereo just croaked... what do you want , it is the winter  Winter here is a loose term, in 2007 it was 50-65F on Christmas. But in February of the same year it was colder than it had been in years. The weather here is as crazy as the people. Though the people would argue there crazier in some cases.

Though, around here I could be killed for saying that... Football land! And... NASCAR... Oh look, another LEFT TURN! Sorry, had to rant that, but yeah, this time of year it always looks like England, I prefer places that are seasonal though. Where else would you find a view like this?

I hate all of them.Samsung makes very reliable phones. For service. I have to say KOODO is good because of this plan:
Unlimited local CALLING during evenings (7pm to 7am) and weekends.
Unlimited texting

Solve : Is it illegal to throw away guitar amplifiers??

Answer»

I've got a guitar amp that's old and it weighs 47 pounds.  The local electronics RECYCLING center charges 30 cents/pound for anything that is not a CRT monitor or CRT televistion..

It would cost me about 15 bucks to recycle it... Frankly I'd rather put it in the dumpster at my apartment complex...

People pay money for stuff like that, especially if it is a vacuum tube amplifier. You could try Ebay or Craigslist or an ad in your local newspaper. Is there a music/guitar shop that would let you put an ad in their window?

In any case, we don't know where you live,      so we can't tell you (even if we knew) what local laws apply to waste disposal in your town or city or state or country. Enquire at your city hall.

Actually, there's a recycling dumpster right next to the trash/garbage dumpster that accepts a variety of stuff including, "small" appliances.  Quote from: EEVIAC on January 18, 2010, 12:41:53 AM

Actually, there's a recycling dumpster right next to the trash/garbage dumpster that accepts a variety of stuff including, "small" appliances.

But... does it pay you for it?That really DEPENDS on where you live at. Where I live you can throw away 3 televisions and 10 buckets of paint and nobody would notice. Some cities and states have their own local laws that are more strict. Europe has the WEEE Directive but I'm not sure if it's really law for individuals or just manufacturers. Quote from: EEVIAC on January 18, 2010, 12:41:53 AM

If you put it in there, how is anybody GOING to know it was you? (Especially if you do it at night when nobody is about) Or get a friend or relative to drive you to another one some distance away.  BC

The amp doesn't work       Otherwise I'd keep it.  It needs new tone/volume knobs soldered into the internal board.  It's not worth fixing to me... If someone else wanted to fix it, I could probably only get like 10 bucks for it... It's not worth it.. Quote from: cruisin702 on January 18, 2010, 12:44:50 AM
Europe has the WEEE Directive but I'm not sure if it's really law for individuals or just manufacturers.

The WEEE directive imposes the responsibility for the disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment on the manufacturers of such equipment. They impose a duty of care upon the provider towards the end user, who as a result has a disposal route, but no legal obligations under WEEE.

In Britain, if you are an importer, rebrander or manufacturer of new electrical or electronic equipment then it's likely that you'll need to comply with the UK's WEEE Regulations, which in part implement the WEEE Directive. If you do need to comply, then you must register on a producer compliance scheme. You may also have obligations under the WEEE Regulations if you are a business with electrical or electronic equipment to dispose of, or if you sell electrical or electronic equipment.

However, most city, town or COUNTY authorities have regulations governing what can be dumped by individuals and where.

It doesn't need to be in working order. Like somehow, the parts for a car can be worth more than the car itself, that may just apply in this situation. At midnight, dump the amplifier on the electronics recycling center's DOORSTEP. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on January 18, 2010, 06:44:49 AM

Solve : Made in China...?

Answer»

It seems everything made in China is becoming less like something you will have ten years later thinking "Man that was a good buy" and more like something you'll end up throwing away two years later thinking "Why did I waste my money?". The reason for this rant? The TV my grandmother got used from the Hotel Roanoke for $25 which she works at as a waitress just died.

There are of course, health risks to things made outside of this country. Some less apparent than others. For instance, a refrigerator sold in the US made in Mexico with Chinese parts will likely contain enough lead to overtime become harmful to ones health. The first generation of Toyota and Honda full sized pickup trucks suffered from weakened structural integrity due to low grade steel, which would cause the frame to snap under the truck when load was put on it. Usually right where the cab meets the bed. And now the Chinese have even come out with there own version of the poor mans iPhone. Before you know it everything will be owned by Jin Wan or To Fu (Just examples, not real companies) electronics and rebranded as something that's "Made in the US of A!".

To what end do we put up with these horrible products? I mean, *censored*, the food in the USA isn't even FROM the USA! Every product I see is from South America, frozen, or canned, then shipped here. Usually prefilled with hormones, and lots of other yummy artificial crap. Although, the things currently built here aren't that impressive either. Our automobiles, for example, are built to compete with imports to the point where they are just as horribly built as 'em. American cars are just now being equipped with age old technology like four wheel independent suspension, and four wheel disk brakes. I think I should pass a Veto to RENAME this country the United States of Whatever is cheap enough. Although I'd probably be shot, lynched, burned, and dragged down a road behind a beat up ford F150 for trying. Everyone is caught up in the whole "Proud to be American" mindset without even thinking "What is America?". Its the decaying relic of a once great but ultimately flawed two hundred and some odd year old IDEA.

the list goes on, actually. It's almost all just a huge excuse for him to do nothing and expect everything. Oh! Oh! I can't get a job because of this economy! and yet previously I believe he said the economic slowdown was a hoax... so which was it?

Quote from: Dead Reckon on January 20, 2010, 06:44:26 AM
The truth is offensive because few people will agree that it is the truth,

It's funny; you'll willingly believe everything in a conspiracy oriented video without question, and yet when it comes to anything else you'll question it's validity. Why does your BS filter shut-off when you watch the videos, and read the books? what makes them any more trustworthy? All they are doing is building up an ALTERNATE truth from facts that they know. Do they make sense? On the surface, they do.

For example, that ridiculous notion that 9/11 was some sort of inside job. I gave it some thought before; it seemed plausible, but you know what, it's utterly ridiculous, because the stated facts that "prove" it are in fact concluded themselves from other conspiracy theories. Basically all you believe is lie upon lie designed to sell more books, like that retard who writes about how the entire world is run by lizard people. Quite an imagination on that one. It's all for the pursuit of truth, of course. the millions of dollars he gets from book sales has totally nothing to do with it.

People find your posts offensive/moronic for just  that reason. they aren't the "truth" they are the ramblings of a job-less adolescent who *censored* and complains about everything, adds a dark pessimism to any topic, and complains about how the world is going to *censored*, and yet at the same time is content to simply stand around and complain about it, rather then actually doing something about it. The first step of which would be to actually provide any sort of reasonable argument to persuade others, rather then come off as some dark gothy "everything sucks" stereo-type that one might gather from your posts, which completely demolishes any sort of credibility you would otherwise have.

You believe we're all being "fooled" and "having the wool over our eyes" to these issues, and are being "brainwashed" by the media, and yet you fail to consider that perhaps the opposite is true; perhaps the people making these videos and books are really just trying to make money off hopeless goofballs looking for an excuse to why they have nothing. Of course they won't have anything unless they actually do something about it themselves, rather then try to redirect the blame to others. This perspective is only further strengthened by the aforementioned "OMG somebody needs to stop these people while I spout off nonsense in forums" concept.

It's really quite a freudian case. And unfortunately your similar to another forum member who I've had the pleasure to deal with on TDWTF forums, spectateswamp (www.thestupidestmanonearth.com) for a quick overview; http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/t/13917.aspx?PageIndex=1 is the thread.

Anyway, to summarize, ol' swampie has it through his head that his search tool, a steaming pile of goat crap, is somehow the answer to the worlds problems.

He refuses to accept any evidence to the contrary, and anything given that supports his arguments are evangelized.

I'm mentioned this before; and it's how conspiracy theorists in general work. They think up some ridiculous idea; and THEN they look for evidence to support it. Unfortunately I think they may have gotten that whole "scientific theory" concept a bit backwards; conclusion comes AFTER observation, you don't make a conclusion and then try to observe ways it's true, that's called "bias". On the other hand, Francis Bacon was obviously a government agent who devised the scientific theory purely to keep the "real truth" (that is, conclusions first, observations only made to prove it) away from us.

This is proved easily simply by how they operated with regards to the 9/11 attacks. They came up with a theory, say, for example, flight 93 was hit by a missile! the trade tower was a controlled demolition!

They come up with these ideas BEFORE ACTUALLY LOOKING AT ANY FACTS. they then pore through the various pictures, and texts, add those that support their theory, and simply throw out the statements and pictures that disprove it on the basis that they are OBVIOUSLY faked.

After the theory that a missile hit one of the planes was "widely accepted" by the chosen few enlightened ones; evidence brought forth to them on a wider scale was met, not with open debate, but PERSONAL THREATS against the people. Yeah, that's a way to get the truth. threaten people.

My personal favourite was in that video you linked us to quite some time ago. It made some interesting claims.

it displayed the whole "neatly cut beams" of one of the towers. What it failed to mention was that the beams were in fact cut by recovery workers after the collapse. Oh... sorry, those workers are liars, right? they must be. God forbid there be any sort of observation or proper research made before a conclusion.

Also, I want to restore my own just as a hobby.  I don't want a new one because that space ship means a lot to me.  I can remember running around the house with it and setting up all my Star Wars action figure inside the ship  car boot sales etc for old one'sthat's the original millennium falcon? I didn't realize people were so tiny in the movie, I ALWAYS imagined them to be people-sized.  they were special little people who could not reproduce so they died of , sad isn't it  Yeah, it's a little known fact that Harrison Ford is really only two and a half inches tall. Solve : Google Voice?

Answer»

I just read up about google voice and it SOUNDS really cool. It says it's invite-only right now, so I was wondering if anyone here has a GV account and is willing to invite me. I heard that all calls become local calls...but I can't find any info on that. If that was true, that would be really usefull because my grandparents LIVE in England, and we don't get to talk much because of long DISTANCE fees.

If anyone is willing to help me out, that'd be greatly apreciated. I have an account but no invites, sorry. What about Skype?
Free, too You can go to their web site and invite yourself.  They say they will get back to you, but don't give a time frame.

For calls to England, you might want to check out Vonage as your phone provider. Quote from: rthompson80819 on January 15, 2010, 06:19:45 PM

I'm tied to Bell. Three year contract...but I get a federal discount rate. All the basic ($25) features, but cheaper long distance rates (in Canada and the US) for half of the original. I did sign up for an invite, but I hear those ones can take a long time to arrive. My grandpa may already have a google voice account (he was one of the first invited uses to gmail, I would have too, but I stuck with hotmail for a while longer). I will have to ask in the morning.

Long distance isn't that expensive anymore man.  I spend some time doing international calls, about three hours a month really, it only costs me about six bucks. Quote from: Helpmeh on January 15, 2010, 07:14:58 PM

My mom does use bell for the home phone service, but the discount only applied to new cellphones. And a lot of people just a little bit older than me pay for their cellphones. It's just one more step to freedom from their parents.

Solve : lost thumb drive?

Answer»

I lost my thumb drive      It has important files on it.  I've looked EVERYWHERE.

All I can come up with at this point is that my cat ran off with it, somewhere.

If you lost a thumb drive, where would you look?

In the Dryer....excellent guess... but I just had it a few days ago and haven't done any laundry since then    try to ask index drive middle drive ring drive and baby drive they migth have bumped each other while thumb drive is running away from you.. lolzTry looking near kitty litter box or under the couch or bed.yeah why not to try lookin under the *censored* blanket... lolI've looked everywhere.........I'm just about READY to give up...

I don't know where is could have gone...  Just a few nights ago I did a Linux installation on an old laptop and I remember plugging the thumb drive into the usb port

Maybe it was the gnomes. *censored* them linux gnomes. Anyway was there anyone in your HOUSE that could have moved it? That is an idea. Ask people around you if they seen it.I  carry mine and I've found it in the cushions of the sofa, lazy boy, and once in the car when I pulled out change at the drive thru and I later found it tucked in by the seatbelt assembly....did you check your POCKETS?  I usually find it in VERY obvious places...I lost a flash drive a couple years ago. It was missing for about four months. It ended up being behind/under the seat in my TRUCK. I guess it fell out of my pocket while I was driving.heh, yah gotta watch out for those darn gnomes

So far I've looked in all suggested places..  I've searched the car thoroughly..

I appreciate the suggestions, keep 'em comming  Back Pocket of your old jeans...I found it!

It was under a chair, which I already looked under...

It's interesting what turns up when you are rearranging the furniture in your home I once lost a 'thumb drive' for about 2 weeks. It was plugged in the back of the computer.

Actually, I say both.  Why do you need to pick one or the other?

Which way does the Earth spin? Clockwise or Anticlockwise? You can't choose both.  Failed to vote on this as I just say 10, we just finished up 09 and next year will be 111998 plus two is what i'm going with so far.....

People stare though...not sure i like that.two thousand and ten is just too long, an I think saying twenty ten just sounds WEIRD. I think I will go with just saying 10There are other options.

In binary it's 11111011010.

In hex it's 7DA.11 111 011 010

Eleven billion, one hundred and eleven million, eleven thousand and ten.Twenty Ten, makes me feel like I'm in a Sci-Fi movie.

"The year was Twenty Ten, we where young, stupid, sent on a mission we knew little about; All we where told to do was exterminate anything that moved... We never could have guessed we WOULD be up against the living dead..."

"They came from The Grave in Twenty Ten"

Sorry, ramblings of my head.

Also thinking something like "*censored* Scotty, I told you to beam me up, not leave my *censored* somewhere inbetween!"

That must be it.... I've been saying twenty-ten, but I blame the news that I overhear.

Why? WELL, there is always a story about 20-10, ever since Vancouver was given the Olympics this year. It's blah blah blah, funds, blah, road closures, blah blah, eagles bluff, blah, blah, in twenty ten, blah blah, cougar sightings... blah..Another reason to never believe the newsI also say "Two years past what year I still think it is"

yes... Installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of basic network infrastructure...   It is the certification that CompTIA offers for networking. (well, one of them--I'm not sure what else they have as FAR as networking)    Just LIKE the A+ is CompTIA's scope of general computer repair...

How was it? Was it easy? I'm kind of thinking about taking some CompTIA tests, but not sure about them yet. I might just do CCNA and/or MSCE instead, but I hear those are pretty hard.Congratulations.

It wasn't too hard for me because I already had some general computer knowledge and I studied for the test a lot.  "Easy" and "Hard" and relative, in my opinion.   All I can say is, be sure you've covered the exam objectives thoroughly, for any exam.  CompTIA is pretty straight forward as far as exam objectives (you can download them) however, putting all the exam objectives together and mixing them all up to form the various questions GIVEN in the tests, is what you have to be ready for.  You can know all about cables, NICs, routers, various PROTOCOLS, ect.. But when it comes to troubleshooting make sure you know which one is most likey to be the cause of the problem, given a senario.  Also, Memorize all the tcp, udp ports numbers and what protocols use them.  Of course, all of the tests are different, but at the very least, konw the exam objectives, well.

CCNA requires (i think) knowledge of  CISCO's proprietary operating system,  for routers, "IOS".   CompTIA Network + doesn't expect you to know the IOS operating system.  Just know how to configure SoHo routers.  CCNA probably delves more deply into other aspects of networking that CompTIA does not.  CCNA also expires every
three years where as CompTIA Network + does not, so keep that in mind... All in all, I'd say if you had a CCNA you'd be in a better posistion than someone with a Network +.  Then again, it all depends on what you want to do in your career.
