Solve : The Top 500 Worst Passwords? |
Answer» This list is three years old, but still a good item to know about. The Top 500 Worst Passwords of All TimeI shudder at the state of society's, um... relaxed moral standards when I note that a lot of explicit slang is to be found in this list. All the more pertinent to the matter as who knows what material the password in question is supposed to... um... conceal from undesired viewers. If you were to PROTECT your "confidential material" I WOULD suggest being SLIGHTLY more paranoid, possibly to the effective EXTENT depicted in my profile picture. |

Solve : Jailed Switching Her School District? |
Answer» This story goes back to the start of the year, but it is still in the news. She was slapped with felony. If she does not get cleared she may become a hard criminal. You hardly get a decent job if you are a felon. If the Governor of Ohio does not give her a pardon, her life is going downhill. KELLEY Williams-Bolar My question: If she could have used a computer to do this stunt, they would let her go with just a stern warning. - Right? Here in England we have situations where people lie about where they live, in order to get their kids into a school which they think is "better" than the one they are actually entitled to. They do things like renting a small apartment or even a trailer within the target school district, or using divorced or separated partner's, grandparents or other relatives addresses. I suspect that racism and/or snobbery are at the root of many of these situations. If the deceit is discovered it can be prosecuted as a crime under the Fraud Act and the child expelled. I have little sympathy with that woman. She lied and she knew she was lying, to get an unfair advantage. I am not sure what your last question means. I don't know what it's like in other places, but here, fraud is fraud whatever means is used. Salmon Trout, Yes, what she did was wrong. She did vomit a fraud. My question was, tongue in cheek, about how she might have got away with it if she had used a better criminal plan. If ones wants to lead a life of crime, one needs to train for it. But she only got nine days in jail. That is not enough training for here next evil deed. The real crime is this: It is a crime that parents would come to believe the schools are not well suited to meet the needs of the children in a district. Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 03, 2011, 12:50:28 AM The real crime is this: It is a crime that parents would come to believe the schools are not well suited to meet the needs of the children in a district. You are confusing two meanings of the word "crime". One is the nomal dictionary meaning "fraud is a serious crime" and the other is the slang meaning "it's a crime that something I don't like has happened". Anyhow, I don't see how being burgled is a good enough reason to lie to the school authorities. But think of what a fine example she is teaching her kids.... Quote Everything was fine — at least I thought it wasignorance is not an excuse...Fraud is fraud, but it seems extreme to charge her with felony crimes. In the US, felonies are usually very serious crimes and more associated with rape, drug dealing and murder. Quote from: rthompson80819 on October 03, 2011, 06:24:13 PM Fraud is fraud, but it seems extreme to charge her with felony crimes. In the US, felonies are usually very serious crimes and more associated with rape, drug dealing and murder.Good thing the judge reduced them to misdemeanours. I'm not really sure how Geek-9pm managed to miss that detail. Now, I don't completely understand how the US legal system works, but from what I understand, she's GETTING in serious trouble for something that really isn't a huge deal. Yes, lying to the school board isn't nice, but it is hardly worth jail time (that was reduced/removed) and a major tarnish on her record...I'm actually taking a course next February-June in the Upper Canada District School Board, which is not my normal school board. But then again, I did go through the "normal routes," like talking to my guidance councilor... This is where UCDSB is LOCATED, over 400km away from me. Did I mention that it's an online course? Like I could commute over 800km every day for a whole semester... Quote I'm not really sure how Geek-9pm managed to miss that detail.I plead guilty - but only if you don't put it on my record. |

Solve : Speed of light broken?? |
Answer» CERN in Switzerland released in the last few days that they broke the speed of light with a neutrino particle. The particle was apparently 60 nanoseconds faster than light over the 467 mile test. CERN in Switzerland released in the last few days that they broke the speed of light with a neutrino particle. The particle was apparently 60 nanoseconds faster than light over the 467 mile test. Neutrino's have zero MASS, which means their mass doesn't increase the closer to the speed of light they go. the "impossibility" of a normal, massed object reaching the speed of light is based on the fact that the closer to the speed of light they go, the greater their mass becomes, asymptotically, so the thought is that it would require infinite energy to reach the speed of light. With a zero-mass object, though, that premise doesn't hold true. Newton's laws were replaced by Einsteins, in a manner of speaking. That is, Newtons laws still hold true in simpler circumstances and it's easier to work with those formulae to approximate physical phenomena; as with any theory, there is usually an abberation, and Newton himself acknowledged that his formula's essentially break when dealing with large mass objects. That was the case for Mercury's changing perihelion, which Newtonian physics couldn't predict. Einsteins theories were a refinement; they were, to simplify, to Newtons formulae as The Cosine Law is to Pythagoras; that is, the Pythagorean theorem is really just a specific subset of the Cosine Law that applies only to right triangles, whereas the Cosine Law applies to all triangles. This is possible because part of the Cosine Law becomes 0 when a right-triangle is involved, and thus redundant. In a similar fashion, new scientific theories are built upon the older, finding those bits and bobs that don't work out. I don't think this case has really done that though, being that nuetrino's have no mass, they are themselves a special case with regard to the formula which make a heavy use of object mass. Quote from: kpac on September 30, 2011, 04:32:53 AM CERN in Switzerland released in the last few days that they broke the speed of light with a neutrino particle. They didn't say that. They plan to... "investigate possible still unknown systematic effects that could explain the observed anomaly. We deliberately do not attempt any theoretical or phenomenological interpretation of the results." This is the group of physicists, together, stating that they don’t know how they came to a result that shows neutrinos apparently exceeding the speed of light. They are not drawing any conclusions and are simply providing the finding and the methods used to obtain the finding. They are trying to find where there could be errors in their MEASUREMENTS. They do not claim that the neutrinos are actually exceeding the speed of light, only that the measurements to date show something unexpected. They are reaching out to the high-energy physics COMMUNITY to improve the experiment and data analysis. They are not looking to fundamentally change physics but to ensure that they are producing sound data. We may find that nothing comes of this. We may find that there is an effect known in physics that accounts for the difference. We may find that neutrinos are capable of moving slightly faster than the speed of light. It is simply too early to make definitive, wide-reaching conclusions.By the way, the plural of neutrino is neutrinos. No apostrophe. Quote What many are overlooking, however, is that acceleration may not be necessary. According to Amir D. Aczel, a researcher at the Center for the Philosophy and History of Science at Boston University, the possibility exists that neutrinos are in fact part of the hypothetical group of particles called tachyons, which travel at speeds faster than that of light. If this is so, then it would carry with it its own set of ground-shaking implications - such as the conceptualization of mass and even the possibility of time travel - but would leave the Special Theory of Relativity intact.http://sanfrancisco.ibtimes.com/articles/222081/20110929/faster-than-light-neutrinos-would-not-necessarily-prove-einstein-wrong-cern-theory-e-mc2-special-the.htm Wouldn't it be easier to just conceptualize that mass is energy, just in a different form? That there is only one universal force at work in the universe and the many "different" forces we see are merely different manifestations of this singular force? There's a theory for you. Ready to be proven or disproven. The fact that we as a species are not only willing to change our understanding, but ALSO to actively pursue it, speaks volumes. "Science fiction" can rapidly turn into more science than fiction, as SEEN from the beginning of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century. At the beginning of the 20th century, things like powered flight, space travel, computers, the concept of the assembly line, even motion pictures were all non-existant. The power of the atom was still a mystery to humankind, and electricity was just starting to see widespread use. At the beginning of the 20th century, a face-to-face meeting between a person living in India and a person living in the United States would have taken the better part of a month to accomplish. Now, through VTC it can literally happen within 30 seconds. If we have come so far, so fast up to this point, what's to say we won't continue to do so. To propose theories, to prove them, find new information, disprove our own theories, then come up with new theories to prove. Our knowledge is evolving, and I won't be satisfied personally until I'm Captain of the Starship Enterprise. I don't believe it. This is like the cold fusion fad that went around years ago. Quote from: Raven19528 on September 30, 2011, 02:17:29 PM At the beginning of the 20th century, things like powered flight, space travel, computers, the concept of the assembly line, even motion pictures were all non-existant. The first motion picture camera was made in the 19th century with a concept that began in the 1860s. There is a lot to this experiment they did. Nothing can go the speed of light, they say, but isn't a neutrino something? Or does it qualify as nothing because it has zero mass?Well, technically it doesn't have "zero" mass, it has close to zero mass. There is a big difference. Quote from: kpac on October 03, 2011, 03:32:14 AM Well, technically it doesn't have "zero" mass, it has close to zero mass. There is a big difference. Yeah, I looked that up now. haha Small, but not zero mass. So it has some mass, however minute, and it may have broken the speed of light. There is no definite answer in this yet. There are several observations they've made that haven't been explained yet.I think Einstien is safe for now as many leaders in the science community are already questioning the results and measurement accuracies... Quote from: patio on October 03, 2011, 07:27:27 AM I think Einstien is safe for now as many leaders in the science community are already questioning the results and measurement accuracies...Yeah, for now anyway. As regards accuracies, I think they covered everything in that regard. They factored in the rotation of the earth, they even stopped any traffic which may have been driving above the underground system!Of course you mean TODAY'S "everything" when you say "I think they covered everything". Tomorrows everything may be quite different and of course next weeks everything might be substantially different again. As we evolve our "knowledge" through investigation and experience today's knowledge is but a step.truenorthThere are questions on both the distance...and time calculations made...i'd guess those are both kinda critical to the results...Also, even if it proves to have been the case, it doesn't mean all other physics (or relativity) get thrown out the window. After all, technically, Einsteins theories replaced Newtons, and we still use those (because they are simpler), or how we'll use Pythagoras for right-triangles rather than the Cosine Law. All it means is that there is a "better" theory yet to be conceived, which we were already pretty sure of anyway. Theories are almost never replaced- only refined. Quote Nothing can go the speed of lightPhotons... And Photons have mass, too. They just have zero rest mass. So do neutrinos. It's the "going faster than light" thing that has scientists debating. |

Solve : And You Thought The Library Was Boring? |
Answer» Quote Gina says she couldn't believe her eyes. Monday afternoon, as she watched in amazement, a guy was sitting in the Gardens Branch Library looking at pornography on a library computer. READ the whole story here I am losing faith in humanity bit by bit. Seriously, if public *censored* is considered an offense due to indecent exposure, shouldn't public porn be an offense too? http://digitaljournal.com/article/307162 What. The. *censored*. However, some extremely liberal-minded people will definitely jump to the masturbators' defense about the right to freedom of expression of sexuality... etc. etc. EDIT: Maybe reading this informative article will put the masturbators' motives in a better light. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_addiction Quote from: Transfusion on September 28, 2011, 05:25:52 AM Seriously, if public *censored* is considered an offense due to indecent exposure, shouldn't public porn be an offense too?No. That doesn't logically follow. That would be the equivalent of making owning a baseball bat illegal because it can be used for an assault. from the article: Quote I don't want promiscuity, *censored* immorality in a public house Quote I don't think it's right. As me being a now a CHRISTIAN and a child of God, I don't think it's rightGet over yourselves. It's nice that you found a faith, but stop trying to force it's ideals and illogically derived concepts of "morals" on everybody else. It's not "immoral" to do that, it's just stupid. Quote http://digitaljournal.com/article/307162Hey, *snaps fingers* focus buddy, that's completely irrelevant. First, off, that person was arrested. Second, it wasn't in a library, and third, he was breaking the law. Looking at pictures doesn't break the law. (I know what some people will say, "what about child porn" well, no, looking at that isn't illegal, posession of it is. Otherwise all the investigators that search perverts houses and find it would need to be arrested a ). Quote EDIT: Maybe reading this informative article will put the masturbators' motives in a better light.Maybe you could stick to the original topic, which isn't even tangentially related to what you linked? Particularly since the Original Post has a guy looking at pictures some fundamentalist doesn't approve of (for all we know, they were just banner ads, and that got her higher morals sense tingling). And she says it was "hardcore stuff" Which I find difficult to believe because how would she know if it was if she was so high up on her pedestal of superior morality? A better question is, was she the only person to complain? Or was she just the biggest loudmouth trying to force her own moral vindictions on others? How do we even know what she is saying is true? Like I said, could have been something like a banner ad that Miss Morals saw and decided that it was her christian duty to make a lot of noise about. Was she the only one to complain? Why do I suspect that to be the case? She might want to instead think about going to grammar school: Quote And any child, or person, female, male person walking byso children and females aren't persons?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_status_of_Internet_pornography http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communications_Decency_Act http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_Online_Protection_Act Lets see what the legislators have done for us about this...Maybe people should mind their own business. Would Gina have been so quick to look away if he was doing his banking on line?http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/04/25/watching-porn-at-nyc-libraries-is-ok-officials-say/ Quote Officials from the New York Public Library stressed their computers all have filtering software to block any explicit material from minors, and they said that staff carefully monitor use of computers in the adult areas. There we have it. A solution. An adult area and a family-friendly area. Now let's patent it, before anyone does. Quote from: Transfusion on September 28, 2011, 08:40:58 PM There we have it. A solution. The solution was pretty much stated as Quantos said. People just need to mind their own damned business. Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 28, 2011, 09:17:48 PM People just need to mind their own damned business.YES. But some people simply have no self-control. So we need to enforce rules.Question: Are web sties required to put a notice on the site that some material may be offensive to some people? How did he find the porn site? Was it not through the use of keywords and meta tags? Are libraries not allowed to use filter software? Do not public libraries, in fact, limit the kind of books they have on the sheaves? It is a waste of shelf space to fill the sheaves with material that the greater number of people would never use. Or want. Or want their children to see. Using that analogy, somebody watching material of little value should give up the screen to somebody doing important research. That would be a basis to limit or monitor what people are watching on the library screens. Unless the library has more screens than visitors. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 28, 2011, 10:45:31 PM Question:This is the basis for creating an "adult" division in a library where you need identification to prove you are not a minor to gain access... possibly where the only way to access the internet is through one's personal devices. Libraries are public services, and they can't segregate people based on porn-watching habits if the porn in question is legal. http://www.salon.com/life/feature/2011/04/28/library_porn http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/iteam&id=4808374 It would be fruitless to attempt to filter all the porn sites in the world. EDIT: We are spending too much time on this topic, aren't we... We should really take a mental break and go play some tennis with fuzzy yellow balls. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 28, 2011, 10:45:31 PM to somebody doing important research. Why? Are public libraries not funded by everybody's taxes? Why should somebody doing 'important' research have more right to use the machines than anybody else? While I echo the aim here which is to prevent what most would call a frivolous use, one still has to define important. Very seldom is truly important research done in a public library. And the thing is that a public library is there to serve all members of the public, including those that might look up some kinky stuff, which is unfortunate for religious fundamentalists who don't know how to mind their own business.Transfusion, That was a good link. From now on I will be very careful about going into a Library. Not a safe place anymore. If you want to meet somebody, don't tell them go to the library. Instead, pick a local Pub. The bartenders knows how to keep order. Librarians don't get that training. No yet. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 28, 2011, 11:21:02 PM Transfusion, I agree. That was a good read. Good job Transfusion. Quote from: Transfusion on September 28, 2011, 11:04:10 PM This is the basis for creating an "adult" division in a library where you need identification to prove you are not a minor to gain access... Am I the only one that, upon reading that, thought of some back room in the library with a beaded curtain and a neon sign above the door that reads "Adult" while MEN in trench coats furtively make their way in and out there? |

Solve : Do not patent your invention. Ever.? |
Answer» Urban Myths. One reason for this is the outrageously wrong urban lore involvingfrom Geek's link. This website... is pretty radical, to begin with... and whether this is just a scam to advertise the website's rambling eBook "The Case Against Patents" is up for debate. The website also has several really irrelevant links such as this:http://www.tinaja.com/magsn01.asp Quote The following information is speculative and not yet proven. A quick search on google for "GGMS Magic Sinewaves" leads me to believe the website author is engaged in radical pedantry. All the links have some relation with http://tinaja.com/. http://electronics.wesrch.com/page-summary-pdf-EL11TZUFUUDXM-some-fifth-generation-magic-sinewaves-3 What GGMS means. Golly, Gee, MISTER, Science. I'm serious. The topic is not about "Magic Sine Wave" But instead "Do not patent your invention. Ever." Others have EXPRESSED this idea. http://www.dontfileapatent.com/ http://www.davidlewispatentagent.com/ForManyPeoplePatentsareaWasteofMoney.html http://erikjheels.com/2167.html This last one is not directly about patents, but it would draw one to the conclusion that patents are not relevant to progress. Please give a look. http://www.fastcodesign.com/1662118/infographic-of-the-day-does-the-us-waste-money-on-innovation Did you notice how he did a nice bubble graph to make his point? If that got your interest, here is an article on how to do a bubble chart. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/creating-a-bubble-chart-HA001117076.aspx The point being made is the most good ideas have already been used by somebody and trying to patent something is often a form of deception when you claim nobody every did it before. Those who benefit from patent law are those who have the money and the nerve to claim they were first. As for Don Lancaster, is was and is a well-respected author in his field. He has had opportunities to fill patents. Instead, he wrote and used copyright law to protect his work. So my reason for quoting him is that his background makes him qualified to have an expert option on the value of patents for entrepreneurs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Lancaster Quote For most individuals and SMALL scale startups, patents are virtually certain to result in a net loss of time, energy, money, and sanity. First line from Don's website. I don't really think his targets are people like Apple and Google. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 27, 2011, 04:23:58 AM The point being made is the most good ideas have already been used by somebody and trying to patent something is often a form of deception when you claim nobody every did it before. People said the same thing 100 years ago. And 100 years before that. People now think we've discovered all we can discover and there's nothing left to come up with, just like they have throughout history. While some people might have the same or similar ideas, people do still come up with original ideas that do help society. We are still making advances in all fields, be it computers or medicine or automotives or anything else. There are new ideas all the time because if we can dream it we will find a way to do it and there is no limit to the human imagination... unfortunately the same could be said about human stupidity as well.My point was that if the great majority of people are trying to patent such useless ideas like "Magic Sine Wave," by all means, I agree with you. However, like quaxo said, "We are making advances in all fields..." We are still progressing, and people deserve credit for the work they have done. Quote from: Transfusion on September 27, 2011, 02:31:58 AM This website... is pretty radical, to begin with... and whether this is just a scam to advertise the website's rambling eBook That was pretty clear from it's 1996-era design. It's probably affiliated with "timecube.com". There are PLENTY of idiotic sites like this. In this case, it appears to be analogous to the idea that a stopped clock is right twice a day. In any case, considering the scope here, this borders on the concept of software patents which is oftentimes bloody ridiculous. For the longest time a person could use LZW encryption, or write bitmap files, but if their software wrote LZW Compressed bitmap files (GIF images) they could get into trouble, unless you paid somebody for the privilege of combining two things into an obvious almagation. Basically, Unisys patented the combination of two existing ideas. How the *censored* can you do that? Can I patent the idea of a bicycle with a elephant on it? Probably not. I wouldn't go so far as to say "everything has been invented" and there is certainly a reason to patent certain otherwise innovative combinations of existing inventions. But a lot of them are really nothing more than a metaphorical pidgeon stapled to a rat and called a bat. Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 27, 2011, 09:38:10 AM Can I patent the idea of a bicycle with a elephant on it? Probably not. No, you can't. I already own the patent on that. See you in court. Quote from: quaxo on September 27, 2011, 10:16:21 AM No, you can't. I already own the patent on that. See you in court.Oh YEAH! Well I have a patent on taking people to court for cases involving an animal on top of a two-wheeled transportation device! You better be ready for my mind-blowing counter-claim!Someone should patent this: This link below has nothing to do with the topic. It is for those who are want to know about sine waves and a the other waves. In is not magic. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/FourierTransform.html An no, you can not patent it. Unless you have the money. Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 27, 2011, 10:20:09 AM You better be ready for my mind-blowing counter-claim! Sorry, I have a patent on "mind-blowing counter-claims". You better try something else. Quote from: quaxo on September 27, 2011, 10:11:09 PM Sorry, I have a patent on "mind-blowing counter-claims". You better try something else.something else. Answer» If the next version of Windows is more user-friendly, it could be more honest. And if it is more honest the default background might look like this: Windows bashing is so 70's.... Linux bashing... now there's something to get behind. For one thing it annoys a lot of people who are themselves very annoying. Sign me up.... Worse than Apple fanboiz in my opinion... Quote from: Salmon Trout on September 03, 2011, 08:52:53 AM Linux bashing... now there's something to get behind. For one thing it annoys a lot of people who are themselves very annoying. It's fun because the most vocal of the Linux crowd ironically KNOW the least about it- Linux Youth are loads of fun, because they INSIST on comparing the features of the latest distros with Windows 98SE. And when that fails, they just ramble about wobbly windows. One particular thing I've never understood about folks is they will say things like "I Switched to Linux" or "I switched to Mac" or "I switched to Windows" etc. I've never understood how people can think Operating Systems are somehow mutually exclusive. Solve : Images of the Devastation from the DC Earthquake.? |
Answer» The tree in the background.... is trying to do the limbo! Quote from: Transfusion on August 25, 2011, 07:35:58 AM The tree in the background.... is trying to do the limbo! It didn't have anything else to do, since there was a temporary brownout so the tree couldn't play it's XBox. I know. I try not to think about it, I can't imagine what it is like not to be able to play XBox 360. Well, that's not true, me never actually playing an XBox 360 and all. In fact, I'm probably one of the leading experts on anecdotal evidence regarding the nonplayment of XBox 360's. But, I like to imagine myself in, say, an idiot's shoes. In that case, the main thought going through my head is, of course, "Where did these shoes COME from" but a rather distant second is.. well actually the second one MIGHT be me wondering why some random idiot has better shoes than me. But third on the list would be the Xb... well, actually, no, I guess my third concern in that instance might be, if I'm wearing their shoes, what are they wearing, particularly if I wasn't wearing shoes at the time. So, FINALLY A distant fourth is, what does this shoe analogy have to do with Xbox 360's, and more specifically what do XBox 360's have to do with soft-rock earthquake. And the answer to that question is of course "lemonade."GREAT post Another instant Classic... Is anyone writin this stuff down ? ?Well, this took a turn for the nonsensical, but the first post is great. When I heard that BUILDINGS in Ohio (they apparently felt a slight tremble) were evacuated and that they're now teaching earthquake awareness and safety, I laughed quite HEARTILY. In their defense, a person's first "earthquake" is bound to be somewhat unsettling I imagine, but when you live in a state where thousands of earthquakes go unnoticed by the general public each year, it's hard not to laugh. They found cracks in the Washington Monument...apparently, pretty bad ones too. Quote from: CBMatt on August 26, 2011, 06:52:15 AM When I heard that buildings in Ohio (they apparently felt a slight tremble) were evacuated and that they're now teaching earthquake awareness and safety, I laughed quite heartily.Yeah, earthquakes in Ohio = small stuff. Tornadoes, on the other hand, can wipe out a town, such as the TORNADO that hit Xenia, Ohio in 1974. I grew up in California and have spent a lot of my life there so I'm used to earthquakes. Since 1933 when a couple of schools collapsed killing a lot of kids, California has had a lot of special building codes in place to prepare for earthquakes. I've also lived on the east coast and there are none of those earthquake standards in place. An earthquake that would barely be a yawn in California can cause major devastation in other parts of the country. Part of the difference is that a high percentage of buildings in California are relatively new compared to buildings on the east coast, or even the midwest. BTW, I've also lived in Ohio and Texas so I've been around tornadoes also. |

Solve : List of power outages.? |
Answer» List of power outages. Our current technology has yet to learn to defend itself from being hurled around at the speed of sound or being subjected to temperatures that will incapacitate humans.Humans have got along for a LONG TIME without high technology. But presently we imagine NTHAT high-tech will always save us from our mistakes. Building houses that can not keep us warm without external power is a mistake. Our ancestors learnied that. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 08, 2011, 08:50:08 PM Building houses that can not keep us warm without external power is a mistake. The recent power outages in Southern California were caused by over USE of air conditioners, as are most power outages and brownouts in the south west. In other parts of the country, most power outages are caused by weather related problems, or sometimes HUMAN error. |

Answer» Have a Safe Summer. Be Careful.
Well, Geek, thanks for the advice. And while we're at it, what about swimming in abandoned quarries, getting drunk and falling over, running with SCISSORS, jaywalking, teasing bears, and eating dodgy tiramisu? Here in Ohio, we've had a lot of hot days with high humidity, making the "heat index" some days in the range of 100-105 degrees F or higher. As far as I can tell, the weather service issues heat warnings when the heat index is around 100 or higher. For some folks, this REQUIRES some caution about engaging in outdoor activity. Shifting to another subject, I've spent a little time this summer observing birds and learning more about them. As a result of actually paying some attention to birds, I believe I've seen more Northern Cardinals and American Goldfinch in the last two months than I've seen during my entire life before this time. I've also seen a bird this summer that I don't recall ever seeing before. If I've correctly identified it, as I believe I have, it's the House Finch. Thank you for your expression of concern Geek-9PM. Soybean, Yes as a continuous residents of our current home ( SE Ontario,Canada) for 44 years we have noticed a tremendous change in our bird population (particularly in the past 10-15 years). We have species here now that weren't here before then. Also some plants that would not survive here then do now.It used to be that to have assurance that your garden stock would survive you had to plant around the 1st of June and harvest before labour day. Now we can usually plant at the end of April and harvest as late as the end of October. Things they are a changing.truenorthThank you for expanding g my post. Answer» DMCA. Site Blocking. Copyright Law. Today, a search of Google came up with this message: Quote In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s) at ChillingEffects.org.The ChillingEffects.org web site seems to be busy. When it does load, this is what you will see: Quote Notice UnavailableThey can be quick to post a complaint. Does it TAKE longer to explain why? True, they wish to protect their intellectual property, but we don't even kn ow if that was the issue. Here is part of a Q and A from the Chilling Effects site. Quote Question: Why does a web host, blogging service provider, or search engine get DMCA takedown notices? There is more.. I have copied this here for the benefit of those who can not gets to the site: htto://ChillingEffects.org Which, it would seem, has an under-powered server or is getting a ton of hits. But still, how can just one complainant take a site off of a search engine? Is this a good idea? Are we going to see more of this? And why can't the search engine tell more about who filed the complaint and why? Can anybody explain any or all of this is simple English? Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 10, 2011, 10:22:57 PM They can be quick to post a complaint. Does it take longer to explain why?No. They (MS... or more precisely, MS's lawyers) already have. It's not posted because the guys at chillingeffects.org have to look over it, or something. The site works fine, by the way. Quote Which, it would seem, has an under-powered server or is getting a ton of hits.Load fine here. Quote But still, how can just one complainant take a site off of a search engine? Is this a good idea? Are we going to see more of this? And why can't the search engine tell more about who filed the complaint and why? Is this really the first time you've seen this? Basically, whatever was removed was probably a link to a torrent site or something. Quote Is this really the first time you've seen this?Yes it is. Never saw it before. I was not even looking for torrents. I have no idea what was on the site that was blackballed. But if I was looking for a torrent that has windows products, I might find one if I really wanted to. Here is one, I put XXX in the name to discourage others. Quote DOWNLOAD mac os 7 for windows Torrent - XXXXXXsTorrentsThat is rather blatant, yet it was not blocked. Quote from: mroilfield on August 11, 2011, 06:13:15 AM What were you searching for?I did Google 'windows 7 problems' An on the first page one item was deleted. Have not idea what it said. No if I said 'steal windows n7' nothing is deleted. Google 'windows 7 hacks' And get one blocking item. I would expect that. Google 'windows 7 issues' Again, one page blocked. Google 'windows 7 freaks' and it is ok. It is not as if I was looking for a way to infringe the copyright. Google 'windows 7 free' an no block. In fact, got a you tube video Quote How to get Windows 7 for free - YouTubeThe post is legit, no infringement of copyright. In fact, he offers to MS permission to use a slogan he invented. A slogan to turn Vista users to Windows 7. MS did not, I believe, use the slogan. 'Twas a great slogan. Amway, MS must have had a very specific problem with some web site that comes up high in the search for 'windows 7 problem'. But no trouble with 'Get Windows 7 free'.I have seen this reference on a number of occasions. However NEVER in relation to the total search responses. It has always been at the bottom of the 1st page and it usually says something along the lines of some sites are not displayed due to blockage under the "DCMA" (or perhaps even other entities-- i can't remember).I personally have never pursued it as usually the available responses appear to be more than adequate for my initial search.truenorth Quote Google 'windows 7 free' an no block. In fact, got a you tube video You need to get a grip on things... The MS Win7 BETA was available to millions of potential users leading up to it's release and was a brilliant marketing move... The sites that DMCA restrictions were posting to links for illegal software..... 2 Very DIFFERENT things here.If you type Geek's search query into a different search engine, e.g. Dogpile, you'll see what Microsoft objected to, I think. |

Answer» Wine Lover's Nightmare...My wife is inconsolable can't stop sobbing. truenorthGilda put the photograph down. Thinking about her son- part of some cult - tore her up INSIDE. "What kind of a grape wants to get smashed beneath the feet of humans?" She mused to herself. "He's helping people" Said her husband, Christopher Concord, sensing her distress. He didn't die in vain; because of him, and the countless others who sacrificed themselves, people won't be drinking the kool-aid, they will be tasting a fine wine. And think of the celebrities he must have met! Mary Muscadine, Kirby Catawba, Miller Muscat... And without him, more people would be perfectly sober." "Besides; he wouldn't want you looking glum at his memorial; try to remember the good times. His body will be here in time for it, we, and his friends- can pay our last respects and have a good old bash in his honour." Just then, there was a knock on the door. Christopher opened it. "Hello, I'm Malaga Mulder, this is Scuppernong Skully. We're from the RRR. I'm afraid we have to bring some bad news. It's about your son." "Oh hello random Raisin Renegades! Would you like a hot BEVERAGE to help combat this killing frost?" Said Gilda Grape, trying to ignore the inevitable reason they came. "I... think you should sit down...", the Agent said; guiding them to their own living room. "the shipment containing the remains of your son has had a terrible accident. Over 30 million of the corpses that committed mass suicide were spilled." he continued. Including Case Unit 47, where your son's remains were being stationed. "Oh..." Gilda gurgled, ALMOST spitting out her own seed. "This is awful news" Christopher said Solemnly. How did it happen? "well, from what we understand, it was caused by a few humans who had a few too many and decided to hold a forklift race. It ended in disaster. Skully here heard it in her thoughts." "It was as if a quarter million bottles of wine were uncorked, and suddenly shattered." She said. "A forklift race... what were they drinking?". Gilda inquired "Wine". The sound of that word was Deafening in Gilda's ears. She turned to Christopher. "You said he was helping people, you said it was for the greater good!" she said, before she started sobbing uncontrollably. "I'm afraid, that I have to ask you to identify his stain." Mulder said, showing a polaroid of a Merlot stain. "OH GAWD THAT'S HIM" Gilda cried through her sobs. It would have been a long recovery even without this piece of information. Losing a family member to a cult is one thing, but finding out that the little good that cult was trying to do caused even more HAVOC takes a lot out of a person's spirit.A bitter end for a bitter wine. How fitting.I somehow keep thinking about what would happen if 462 cases of Russian Vodka met their fate like this. Answer» Riots in Vancouver, B.C Actually it happened in Vancouver - when they lost to the Rangers in '97 And I'm with you guys. I'm a big sports fan - always have been - but my fanaticism ENDS when the game does. I root for a team and salute the winner, regardless of who it is. It's called sportsmanship. These people clearly don't have a live of their own - they live vicariously through their sports heroes. Quote And I'm with you guys. I'm a big sports fan - always have been - but my fanaticism ends when the game does. I root for a team and salute the winner, regardless of who it is. It's called sportsmanship. These people clearly don't have a live of their own - they live vicariously through their sports heroes.Exactly, Like I say- they (the fans) weren't playing the game, whether Vancouver won or lost isn't going to affect them personally, You root for the team, but like you say there is no reason for that to overflow outside the rink/stadium- certainly not ENOUGH to riot about it... I mean, really? Setting police cars on fire... Meanwhile the players themselves might have been dejected but they always seem to take the loss a *censored* of a lot better than their fans. I still don't understand why the news called them "protesters"... Quote from: CBMatt on June 16, 2011, 03:35:31 PM I can't even begin to imagine why people felt this was a reason to riot. That's basically my take on it. At least riots with a "cause"; government policies, taxation, etc put good use to the "freedom to assemble/protest" rights, but this just makes a mockery out of them. What's next? riots because a local restaurant runs out of ketchup? As BC has related above the reference to the past riot was 1994 "when they lost to the Rangers in '97". My wife made a suggestion today in light of the riots after last night's final game that the mayor of Vancouver should announce that if and whenever the Canucks end up in a Stanley cup playoff final again they will NOT be permitted to have ANY home games. Apparently the greater number of these thugs will be able to be identified due to so many pictures of them having been taken. Given that probably most of them are without financial means now that they expended all their money on the booze they needed to heighten their courage to run amok any court financial penalties will be ineffectual. However i suggest that the total monetary losses once established (including security costs) be apportioned between them all and however long it takes (maybe even up to 50 years ) they be obliged to conduct community services until they have satisfied their obligation to pay back what they caused to be lost.truenorthWell, I remembered it was when the lost to the Rangers. Other than that, what's 3 years give or take Right I am old enough to remember some of the ones that took place in Montreal back in the Maurice Richard/Campbell days. I could be wrong but i don't recollect any riots after games in the U.S. after a Stanley cup final--maybe it is something in our water (which by the way we have so much of).truenorthThe Media labeling them protesters legitimises them.... Turns my stomach. They are nothing but thugs and thieves ... Quote from: patio on June 16, 2011, 06:48:18 PM The Media labeling them protesters legitimises them.... Exactly. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 16, 2011, 04:13:22 PM What's next? riots because a local restaurant runs out of ketchup?Don't even joke about that.Interesting developments- other city citizens are helping nab RIOTERS by "tagging" them in photos and videos that were taken as it happened. from http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2011/06/15/bc-stanley-cup-fans-post-game-7.html Quote The riots shook Vancouver residents, and prompted thousands to sign up to a Facebook campaign that aimed to identify rioters and looters. There is also a campaign underway to get people to clean up the city, beginning Thursday morning. I can't help but find the image of the Sears store being looted rather humorous, beside the smashed door/window there is a sticker that says "new store hours"; that certainly seems to be the case! Wow, I think that's the first time I've heard of Facebook actually being useful.People will always use excuses to rationalize their actions.Whaddya gonna steal fron Sears for cryin out loud ? ? For the record, it's not true. Quote from: JJ 3000 on June 03, 2011, 08:15:22 AM I will. Me too. It's utter nonsense. It's called "blame-shifting"; "it wasn't their fault! They were influenced by the evil pedagogical influence of those EVIL VIDEA GAMES!". Sure, most Video games may not be TEACHING kids very much useful information, but the parents that pull that type of crap are worse because they are teaching those kids that they can shirk responsibility and try to blame somebody else. It's the same mindset that brings up rapists who blame their victims for being a tease or being too pretty or other nonsense. Additionally, let's pretend that Video Games do create murders and psychopaths (obviously, we'll need to ignore the thousands upon of thousands of years of murders and psychopaths that existed before video games, but we're trying to create a reassuring litany here, not look for facts). You really think that little murdering Timmy that played grand theft auto just decided one day to pull a columbine or whatever? No, Maybe, instead of sleeping all day and drawing welfare or ignoring their kids the parent's who are responsible for their children should actually be paying attention to them. You know that time little Timmy used a hacksaw to torture rats and ripped the wings off of flies and started boiling cats alive? That wasn't "cute" it was a warning sign that this kid was getting SCREWED UP IN THE HEAD. And I might add that these types of screwed up psychopaths not only existed long before video games (as I noted) but are merely taking their evil ideas from them. That sounds bad, but it's no different than it would be with movies, or really any other form of media. *censored*- one could CONSIDER the news just as harmful to such people since they learn how other people of a similar mindset do it. |

Solve : And This is why I avoid these types of sites...? |
Answer» http://www.zdnet.com/blog/networking/how-skype-does-and-doesn-8217t-work/1051 I usually don't read these things but it was linked in a newsletter I receive. I'm surprised they pay people for this type of thing. Reading the authors other articles, I notice a theme. It seems that many of his articles follow the trend of:
Basically, the author didn't do ANY research to back up any of what he says. For example, he claims that Skype, being run essentially P2P, can't work on a PC with a firewall. That is simply untrue. In one paragraph he says it's encrypted using 256-bit encryption, in another he's saying that anybody along the way can view your precious data. Of course he's just playing off the lot of Security-Related FUD That has permeated the industry as a whole, which is evidenced by the epic facepalm that was most peoples response to the iPod tracking thing. For example, he says "It goes through a lot of computers" OOOOOH! SCARY! yeah, that's called a network, buddy. That's how they work. We also have colour televisions. He implies that P2P is unreliable, yet countless people seem to be able to make skype calls and use other Peer-2-peer applications just fine. And that is why I usually don't read these types of things. What concerns me more is that there are plenty of people who do, and a good portion of them ACTUALLY think most of these people are intellectually qualified for anything more cognitively demanding then a staring contest with a turnip. I know I've seen a few posters on this forum mention they used a registry cleaner or a "tune up" tool because it was recommended by one of these types of sites, which IMO puts a lot of their credibility RIGHT out the window. (That combined with the incessantly repeated nonsense comparing the Windows registry to a "Brain") Here is a tidbit from that article. Quote Really, what were you thinking Ballmer when you wrote a check for $8.5-billion for Skype? You do know that not even two years ago Skype was valued at $2.75-billion right? The answer should be obvious. They will get the money back in just one year. Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 13, 2011, 01:13:01 AM Here is a tidbit from that article. The answer should be obvious. They will get the money back in just one year. Exactly; when it comes to stuff like this, I prefer to defer to the experience of the corporation that is worth billions as a result of making similar decisions in the past. This points out something else I've always found amusing: so many people like to think they are business analysts; I mean, sure, that can be a good germ to spark a discussion, but it's hardly a position that presents itself as an authority. I'm not a business analyst so all I- or really most people- can really do is look at the decisions from a COMMON sense perspective; however, and I suppose it's debatable, but really, thinks like marketing/economics/business analysis are a sort of science, and common sense is practically useless in science, since it's only applicable within the narrow range of experiences we grow up with. It's often more harmful than helpful in the scientific process. Nobody that hasn't worked as a business analyst can say that a particular business decision was or was not "common sense" because their experience simply doesn't contain any context in that field. That said, I can say with some certainty that the author of the article didn't have very much context to make what appears to be a "common sense" accusation; after all, if they did and competent at it, they wouldn't be writing alleged technical articles- they'd be making those types of decisions. |

Solve : MSN and the perpetual looping of the service requests for login issues.? |
Answer» There is a Loop in the program for service for the LIVE program. when you have a login issue and you want to post a QUESTION, you can write the question in the forum page, but the minute it tries to send the question it brings the person to the Login page. This is a loop from which there is no SALVATION. if you try and reset your Login information, you can do so but each and every contact you had is then locked in the old address for Infinity. This is a breach of the FTC regulations as well as the New Laws being cut as we speak in the F.O.I.P.O.P. to levy fines for violations of this law to the rights to privacy's as STATED on the CPAC channel to send a clear message to developers and advertisers that they mean what they say regarding the rights to privacies. If The issues found on MSN are not repaired and ownership taken to resolve these issues, there will be undoubtedly be very large fines as named by the Minister and the Governor's who are now working together on these attention getting fines. Why would the company not want to send clear messages to those who are using the site that violators will be charged, and handed to these Government officials by their HEADS to prevent having them concentrate on the company? The resources for this Program are still under the ownership of Microsoft and these fines will be leveled at Microsoft for failure to protect the information's or fixing the issues of these people who are now exceeding three hundred thousand complaints regarding this one program for unsolved login issues or Identity theft. The three targets mentioned are Twitter, MSN, and Facebook. All will be the focus of these Governments as offenders responsible for eighty percent of all charges and reported offences and complaints. Why Can they not fix the programs and become leader's in this rather than targets?Actually i would contact your ISP and have them run a long line test... |

Solve : Tornado warnings fall short.? |
Answer» This is from The Republic, a newspapers in Columbus, Indiana. Tornado warnings couldn't foretell Smithville destructionThe point being made is the warnings wee not good enough. People needed more information. My question is: Could computer technology help? If so, How? Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 01, 2011, 07:22:47 PM The point being made is the warnings wee not good enough. People needed more information. More information? What information? A warning is merely a "message informing of danger". It doesn't have to describe the danger, and even so, how would that help? Especially in the case when the siren is only for a specific kind of event. It's like claiming that a foghorn isn't "good enough" because it doesn't give ships enough information, it gives plenty, direction of land and it tells them that it's foggy (which they already know) a tornado warning warns of a tornado. What more information do they need to give? You don't seriously expect a warning that contains say the rating of the tornado to matter? All that could result in is complacent idiots who don't do anything because the forecast says it's a "weaker" tornado. In that case, if Smithville was struck, and there were in fact warning sirens beforehand, what the *censored* are people complaining about? The warning is "hey, idiots, get the *censored* out of the way, there is a tornado" They aren't supposed to be a weather forecast, and they can't be 100% accurate. It's better to air on the side of caution "well we better warn people" rather then decide against it because warning people and having it turn out to be not dangerous results in nobody dying. Not warning of possible danger and having a Tornado or other even occur without any awareness can. I just love how people complain about the early warning systems of hurricanes tornadoes, and so forth. As if the fact that they were inconvenienced somehow overrides the fact that the system is designed to try to make sure they don't get killed or injured during such an event. Quote In fact, when the tornado that leveled much of Smithville struck about 3:45 p.m., it was the third or fourth time that the warning sirens had roared, residents said. So, should they wait until there are at least three warnings before the run? Quote You don't seriously expect a warning that contains say the rating of the tornado to matter?Yes, The warning system should provide as much tail as technology can provide. Teach the sirens to talk! My glucose meter TALKS to me, New cars talk. And some AREAS have reverse 911 calling. We need taking warning systems. Or something better that a mindless siren. That town did not get enough information. Three imprecise alarms - and then it struck. The residents shooed have been told the direction of the funnel and its speed. Doppler radar can provide that information. The article indicates that nobody in that town undersold the warnings. Other than there was a warning. BTW, BC_Programmer, a meteorite is going to hit your hose soon. But we can not tell you when. Nor can we tell how big it is. But you have heave been warned by an early warning. Heads Up! I cannot rightly apprehend the confusion of ideas that would lead to this topic being posted. If only we had the knowledge and the technology to predict the weather with more accuracy.... |

Solve : Your Speed is 73 km per second.? |
Answer» Quote Astrophysicists Have Calculated the Speed at Which the Universe Expands theweek.com — The universe is expanding at 73.8 kilometers per second per 3.26 million light years, give or take 2.4 km, according to a study published in the Astrophysical Journal.Quote Your Speed is 73 km per second. In what reference frame? What kind of speed you are talking about?Human or vehicle? Please write details.I want to upgrade my speed. Quote So, according to this equation, a galaxy 3.26 million light years AWAY — or one megaparsec — is moving away from us at around 73.8 kilometers per second. A galaxy two megaparsecs away would be travelling twice as quickly, and so on.Your Speed is 73 km per second per megaparsec.*censored*.. so quick The title is very misleading. It isn't 73km per second, it's 74km per second per megaparsec. Additionally the value, also known as Hubble's Constant, has been highly DEBATED amongst astrophysicists due to the massive uncertainties that COME with measuring speed over such vast distances. Also that's not how fast the Earth is moving, it is how fast galaxies are moving away from Earth (using the formula V = H0 D where v is velocity, H0 is 73.8km-1mpc-1 and D is distance from Earth. I think I'm ready for my astrophysics test next month.....speed and velocity are meaningless without a reference frame. "speed per megaparsec" is more a measure of how fast you are going relative to a point some multiple of a megaparsec away. of course what the constant really measures is the difference between the velocity of observer (us) and something else a given distance away (such as a galaxy). Absolutely nothing in the entire universe is stationary, simply because there can be no definition for what is stationary except within a SMALLER reference frame. Yup. The H0 figure is the recessional speed of galaxies from Earth - i.e. relative to Earth. Incidentally, my Astro and Relativity exams are back to back. Fun stuff. That is a measure of how quickly the fabric of space itself is expanding. The galaxies are not "moving" away from each other. The universe is expanding around and between them. Galaxies do however move, just not at the rate of cosmological expansion. |
