Scavenging OAP Crashes Georgia's Internet
Enlarge photo .Georgian police arrested the 75-year-old pensioner after she single-handedly cut off Internet connections in Georgia and neighbouring Armenia, the interior ministry said.

The woman hacked into the cable which runs through Georgia to Armenia, forcing internet users in both countries offline.

"She found the cable while collecting scrap metal and cut it with a view to stealing it," Georgian interior ministry spokesman Zura Gvenetadze said.

She was arrested in the village of Ksani, north of capital Tbilisi, and has been CHARGED with damaging property.

The pensioner could face up to three years in prison if CONVICTED.

"Taking into account her advancing years, she has been released pending the end of the investigation and subsequent trial," Mr Gvenetadze said.

The attempted cable theft last WEEK brought down internet services for several hours.

Many Georgians' internet connections were also cut in 2009 by another scavenger who damaged the fibre-optic cable while hunting for scrap metal in the impoverished ex-Soviet state.

The company that owns the cable, Georgian Railway Telecom (GRT), said that the latest damage was serious.

It caused 90% of private and corporate online users in Armenia to lose access for nearly 12 hours while also hitting Georgian internet service providers.

"I cannot understand how this lady managed to find and damage the cable," GRT head of marketing Giorgi Ionatamishvili said.

"It has robust protection and such incidents are extremely rare."

GRT's slogan is "your reliable partner in the Caucasus region" and its fibre-optic network is also connected to Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Although the second trick was done with a double coin, the second and third coin placed on to the table was 'one' coin and when knocked instantly flipped into a WHOLE coin, the other coin was in his left hand as he hit the table. SORRY if i ruined the enigma.

But as for putting your hand through the GLASS, that looked pretty cool! Quote from: reddevilggg on February 15, 2011, 04:21:00 PM

But as for putting your hand through the glass, that looked pretty cool!

That one's done by rotating the double-paned glass.  At about 6:25-6:28, you should see some smudged fingerprints near the woman.  Those are there throughout most of the VIDEO, but at around 5:47-5:49, you can see that there are no fingerprints near her and they are actually over by the man in black.  The ILLUSIONIST of course obscures the hole in the glass with his left hand as it's moved into position and you can see that he has a little bit of trouble keeping his hands steady at 6:18 once he has cleared the hole and the glass is moving back into place.  The glass is most likely operated by one of the men at the rear of the table.

It's an old trick, but a good one.  Some people think explaining how a trick works does nothing but spoil the fun, but I think figuring it out is the fun part.  After all, we all know it's simply an illusion; we just don't always know how they're done.  In this case, I benefited from seeing Copperfield do the same thing years ago.Wow, that's pretty amazing.  Thanks for sharing!

Solve : Does AT&T covet your rights??

Answer»

Does AT&T covet your rights?
An Attack on Network Neutrality is really an attack on your rights as a person. To elevate the rights of a corporation is to lower the rights of individuals.
Yes, this is not a new story. But it goes on and on. They just don't stop. If you want decent download speed you have to pay more. Do you may think that is fair? No, it is not. You pay for a 1.5 mbps speed and if you do a P2P connection it drops to half the rate. Why? because they can get away with it. It is their right. If you want to download an ISO image of software that you rightfully can use, they make it hard or impossible. It is their right because they suspect you are a bad guy.

Read this:
Quote

What is Net Neutrality?
The activist website savetheinternet.com has a video explanation of what Net Neutrality means. In a nutshell, it's the idea that wireless carriers and Internet Service Providers shouldn't be able to privilege one website over another. They can put caps on bandwidth, to keep people from using their service too much, but they can't charge you extra to visit a particular site.

Activists consider it important to write these PROTECTIONS into law, because most people in the United States have very few choices when it comes to wireless or high-speed Internet service. WITHOUT formal Net Neutrality laws, activists SAY, people will be at the mercy of the wireless companies and Internet Service Providers.

Solve : Japan Earthquake: before and after?

Aerial photos taken over Japan have revealed the scale of devastation across dozens of SUBURBS and tens of thousands of homes and businesses.

ANYWAY, the devastation is shocking.  The radiation leak from a nuclear reactor, apparently triggered by the earthquake, is another terrible happening. Quote from: soybean on March 14, 2011, 02:42:11 PM

it says this at the top of the page , " HOVER over each satellite photo to view the devastation caused by the earthquake and TSUNAMI. "

they have had no luck from it happened , the NEXT problem will be food and water for all the people , a solder was speaking and he said all of his men needed food and water

The problem is that the best engineering designs able to withstand vibrations up to 7 on the Richter scale.
And the earthquake in Japan 8.9. And the Richter scale is logarithmic.
Density spectrum of random vibration, earthquake. Concentrated at low frequencies (less than 15 Hz) and natural frequency for most of the buildings within this area bandwidth. Which causes a serious phenomenon  called resonance moro , very interesting

Solve : coaxial tv cable?

Answer»

Greetings all !
This is off-topic, but I love reading your forums, because of the many intelligent people that seem to be on this site
My question is centered toward people who live in the US and have Comcast as there TV/computer connection.  I received 1 of their new boxes which supposedly enables an old tv to receive their new digital signals.  In general there was a lag (screen would pop up that says contact comcast blah blah)  before the channel would appear.  and it seemed as though many other channels were no longer available.
This is the tech part of the question - they sent out a repairman when my wife was at home (I was at work) who immedately said Ah your need to replace your cheap coax cables with the new cables.  I did notice that the cable that came with the converter box is much heavier.  But I have splitters running through the roof of my house which would mean I would have to replace over 300ft of cable.  None of my TV's are HD and I have the on-demand box in the living room.  I guess my misunderstanding is that does the cable coming out of the box at your house need to be replaced with "new coaxial cable) or only the cables that lead from the new digital converter box ?
As I said this is off-topic, but  if anyone can EXPLAIN any differnces in coaxial cable,  I think a lot of us could learn form people who know vs people who sell.
Thanks to all.  CH rules the universe !Well,  I used to work in that kind of stuff. In general, Coax cable does not last a s long as you want it to. And every spice and tap is a potential source of trouble. But it affects the quality of your reception, it does not cut off any channel just because of poor quality.
Your TV set should be set to 'cable', not 'antenna' to receive all cable channels. But some  cable systems now require every TV set to have a converter box. It is a real PITA.

My advice, do not replace the cable until you know that is the real problem. I think they want you to have a box on top of every TV.

You could, of course, break your contract and get another company. The fact that they do not give you the service outlined in the contract is a valid reason to break it.
And no, the coax cable does not belong to them. It becomes a permanent part of your home.

BTW, you can make a deal with you TV provider for internet service. So it does become a topic for this FORUM. To date, a cable modem is the way to go. If it is done right.
There are dozens of different types of coaxial cable used in homes, usually referred to as drop cables.  At one time RG-59 was the standard and that's what it sounds like you have.  For a number of years now, RG-6 has been the standard and it is LARGER than RG-59 and therefore has LESS signal loss which is very important at higher frequencies.  Like in anything there are good drop cables and cheap drop cables.  If you have that much RG-59 in your house I would guess it's over 20 years old and could be a problem.  Although, there is nothing wrong with RG-59 in it's self other than excessive signal loss, although really old RG-59 wasn't designed for the higher frequencies in use today.  If you have a mashed cable maybe only that one piece of cable needs to be replaced.

The first thing I would do though is check the splitters in the attic.  Most splitters have markings on them to show their upper frequency limit.  Today, the upper limit on splitters should be 1GHz.  Anything less could cut off upper channels depending upon the bandwidth of your cable system.  I would also check the cables in the attic and make sure there is no damage to the cables.

BTW, legally, if Comcast installed the cable, it is their property until you disconnect.  Then they have 15 days to retrieve it (which they almost never do) and after 15 days it is your property.  If the cable was installed by a builder, it is your property.

Cable companies are going digital because they can fit many more channels into the space one analog channel takes up.  Many cable systems have already gone all digital, which means a box on every older set.  Almost all newer TVs can display unencrypted digital channels without a box.  At some point in the future all cable channels will be digital.  People seem to get upset about cable channels going digital, but they forget all satellite channels are digital and that doesn't seem to bother anybody.I'm going through the Comcast changeover now.  If your signal is clear on the analog TV's without the converter, new cable drops are not required.  My house is full of RG-59 & the signals are good to all the TV's (mostly analog with DTA's) and the cable modem.  The Comcast technician should have measured the signals at the end of the drops (right at the TV's).  If he did not do this, he's not doing his job properly.

The little DTA's actually work quite well, but I just had a 3mo old unit lose sync and could not be rebooted by the CSA's, the little green light just kept flashing.  New one had to be activated even after the exchange.  I think Comcast is pretty overwhelmed with this changeover & few CSA's or techs know what to do.Thanks for all your replies,
Have yet to decide as to what I am going to do, as I need to replace over 300ft of cable.  rthompsonwon80819 - if rg-569 was the old standard is RG6 the new standard. - As I stated before no HD TV's involved.
RG-6 has been the standard for a number of years.  There are larger drop cables, but they are very difficult to work with inside the home.  It doesn't matter if you have HD or not, it's the higher channels that are affected by excessive cable signal loss.  If you have a staple or nail through the cable in the attic any channel could be affected.Reference.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coaxial_cableGeek, I just read the Wikipedia article on coaxial cable, and normally I consider Wikipedia a reasonably good source of information, but the article on coaxial cable was horrible and outdated.  I'd edit it tonight, but it's after 1am and I've had several glasses of wine, but I plan to work on  it tomorrow.  It's just got too many misstatements and unclear facts.

It starts off with a picture of RG-59 with two center conductors.  There are some video cables with two center conductors, but it's not RG-59. Quote

Must be the wine!  There is only 1 center conductor.
Greetings All!
It's kind of funny because wikipedia was where I started my research, but found it kind of confusing.   Geek-9pm - thanks for the links.  I only thought I was confused !   I had no idea there are so many different types of coax cables.  I think I'm just going to cut the cable and put some aluminum foil around a coat hanger and see what I get.   Seriously I am an auto mechanic by trade and feel as though I have a good general knowledge of electricity, but I am absolutely bewildered at this point.  Anyway thanks for all of your replies.  I knew there would be a lot more smarted people than me on CH !You are welcome.
The big deal with coax is making a gas-tight splice that keeps electrical loss to a minimum  and prevents oxidation.  It most often is a case of the outer conductor gets loose in the connector and you pick up noise and bad signals. There is not enough POWER going through the cables to break up the oxides that form on connectors exposed to air and water. In extreme cases they have to fill the cable with nitrogen to displace any water. Don't try that at home, just do a good job on the connections.

But nuclear energy produces about 13,000 times the amount of energy per pound of fuel than coal, and considerably less waste. The only problem with the waste, of course, is that uranium and plutonium produce immeasurably more dangerous waste than coal, or oil, or natural gas, or any other energy source currently in widespread use: not only does it need to be stored safely for thousands of years (like that's going to happen), but if it gets in the wrong hands, well, use your imagination.

Each horizontal row of elements is called a "period". So to be more formal in what I previously said I should have said that "all the elements in that period can be used for nuclear fission" although even that has some flaws.

In any case, the table is a list of periods- thus, a periodic table.

That is assuming that wasn't tongue-in-cheek humour. In which case- carry on It was...but i think i'll bail while i'm still ahead...

Simply. Succeeded the Internet revolution in Egypt  .
And I think that the internet has become a more effective than TV
We now feel freeHow would you justify that the Government was able to shut it down for 4 days then ? ?True.Government  has been shut down the Internet. But it was too late.
And was also shut down the most important news channels (Al Jazeera)
I think that what happened - Internet revolution - is, a positive precedentIn my opinion the shutting down of the INTERNET in Egypt only emboldened the resolve of the citizens to continue and enlarge their protests. So even in it's curtailment by the Government it (because of it having been there) caused the people to be more aware and inventive in their coming together in protest. It was the catalyst for the beginnings of the revolution. Once it gained momentum i doubt that there were too many countries whose media was not on the ground to show the images and the interviews all over the world. In this household my wife and i were glued to the Al Jazeera live streaming continuous broadcasts from Cairo and elsewhere in the country. All our daily activities were governed by their broadcast. Undoubtedly it will have a worldwide influence on the proliferation on social media technology. We continue to see that as other counties in the region are caught up in similar events. Ahh, again, the old "government good. revolutionaries bad." black and whiting of shades of gray; how can you paint every single rebel faction, and discontented citizen as a corrupt, power-hungry child-raping thieves running on self-interest? If the government was stable, they wouldn't have ever gained a foothold to cause these problems, and certainly they wouldn't have any reason to. and if the government was unstable, then it clearly wasn't doing a very good job of governing. Revolutionaries and rampant protesters and looting don't appear in well-run countries (with the exception of after major sporting events). And mad-men don't get any power or a foothold as we see there in well run countries either; so saying with any assertion that which side wins makes a difference is ridiculous; consider for a moment- it doesn't really MATTER which side ends up in power since once one side "wins" poof. no more fighting; a stable government. I mean, can you imagine how much of a pain it is for them to file their taxes now? That's the ultimate goal here, really. (to "solve" the problem, not to file their taxes) And the problem is that there are some people (revolutionaries) willing to fight/protest for what they believe in; and others who are a tad more timid, so in effect the latter is being "forced" to take a side and either way they've essentially made an enemy that will put them and their family in danger. Again though, the fact  that the numbers of those discontent with the situation to do something about it is high enough to have repercussions around the world and sending shockwaves throughout the internet should bring to bear that this is anything but a minor squabble; but either way, as truenorth pointed out, and to summarize- it's really just a matter of time before things are resolved.

Solve : Help with Flowcharting?

Answer»

I'm new to this. And my tutor at my college was no help. I'm lost....I'm hoping I can get some assistance....I'm trying to DRAW a FLOWCHART that would provide a workable solution to the following problem...

management wants a printed report that lists a worker's name and the number of HOURS of overtime the person worked that WEEK. At the end of the report there must be a total of all the overtime worked that week...

1. the data is in a file on a disk.
2. each record contains the required fields and may include fields that are not needed for this problem.
3. the end of the file record will contain**.* in the hours worked field.
4. if a person did not work overtime there name should not appear on the list. It will be in the file if they worked at all.
5. assume that the file will be read one record at a time(read one record, process that record, print the report line if the person worked overtime, then get the next record.
6. a standard work week is 40 hours; any time over 40 hours is overtime.
7. assume that the file has been verified and there will be no errors

Solve : Whats Your Plan for 2011??

Hello all,

First of all, Happy NEW Year.

I was very curious to know all your plans for 2011. Would love to hear them.

Sorry but I don't plan a year at a time.

All of my goal/plans are either quickly attainable ( I plan to go see the newest movie out in theaters, I plan to take my wife out on a date with out the kids) or take years to see to the end (I plan on having the mortgage paid off on my house by the time my kids get out of school, I plan on being CEO of the company that I work for)

I don't see the point of trying to SET new goals at the beginning of a new year. Why not use the beginning of the new month, week, weekend, day, or hour. They are all equally significant in your life as the beginning of the New Year.

Why should you have to wait until a new year to set a new goal and why only give yourself a year to do something in? If it was really an IMPORTANT goal you would have set it the day you realized it was important to you and you wouldn't give up on it if you can't complete it in a year.Always good to make a plan. But ones needs to be flexible.
Marketing? Like make money in marketing?
How do you learn new things?
A. Talking to others with same interests.
B. Analyze the success of others.
C. Get some books and read a lot.
D. Take a course at a local college.
All the above are reasonable entry methods into marketing.

The following are NOT recommended marketing entry points
A. Respond to TV ads about how to make a million SIX weeks.
B. Frequent Casinos that offer special night.
C. Start a pyramid scheme with your friends. Quote from: mroilfield on January 07, 2011, 05:30:54 AM

Look what up in the Bible? Technology? It's not in there directly, but it's described pretty well (in prophecies) for not knowing what modern stuff was back then.

"back then" of course being the date of rewriting. most modern publications of the bible were written/revised within the last 10 or 20 years. Additionally, the fact that it was originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, Latin, and Koine Greek, illuminated in latin and no doubt "revised" any number of times (voluntary and involuntarily), and then translated into English a full 1380 years. and the person who original translated it to english so that "more people could read it" had his bones dug up and crushed and thrown in a river. Can anybody offer a possible reason that the pope (you know, the guy people worship despite the fact that one of the commandments is to not) would be so infuriated that there was a translation into a language more people understood? I can, maybe because he was smart enough to see that if the common people started reading it they'd start making aprophenic connections between it's texts and real-life events. "OMG! this story says this and this happened yesterday that was similar if you replace any number of various involved elements with the elements from the fiction" therefore the logical deduction they make is that because Event A was followed by event B and then event C in the bible, that since Event A happened in real life will obviously be followed by event B and then event C. This is pretty stupid since the same exact aprophenia doesn't seem to extend to any other literature. If we were to follow that logic we could say that any Girl standing on a balcony talking to themselves while a peeping tom of a rival faction sits out in the bushes will inevitably lead to both of their deaths and their families making amends with one another LIKE old friends... but not before several parties where people where anonymous masks. Why? because obviously Shakespeare wasn't telling a story or trying to present a play, no- he was predicting the future and we shouldn't read it as a story and take away our own indications from it but instead extend it's OTHERWISE fictional events into real-life. Therefore I present the solution to the problems between Israel and Palestine is easy- just find a israelite who is in love with a Palestinian, put one on a balcony, one in the bushes, and the problem will solve itself, after a few soliloquies.
And the original English translation was hundreds of years ago, already possessed any number of translatory indirections, and was further revised and abridged with pretty much every new publication. New, discounted areas of the bible were inconspicuously removed and then the debaters told "what, that's silly, it doesn't say that the sun revolves around the earth, it clearly says the opposite in this new "clarified" edition. The fact that it's been translated through so many languages (at least 4 or 5, probably, if you count the various forms of English as different languages) sort of puts a damper on that whole "it prophecized X" nonsense. If you really want to make claims that the bible prophecizes something, then use the original texts; that means learning about 3 or 4 different, and otherwise obsolete languages. And most religious internet trolls, such as 876543219 or whatever he is called now, have trouble mastering one, so that's out.

The thing is, if you have to try to scientifically justify your faith, you've already failed; the fact that you feel you need to justify yourself at all means that your faith is not as strong as you commit; because you are more "proving" these arguments for yourself as much as for your opponent; presenting circular arguments that what the bible says is always right because it was written by god, and then you prove it was written by god because it says so right in the bible, and the bible is right because it's written by god, etc etc.

TL;DR:
If you have to prove your faith, you don't have any.The reason that I try to prove what I believe isn't to justify myself..... it's to explain stuff to people who don't believe. Part of my faith is that people who refuse to believe what God says is true and follow Christ, are in effect choosing *censored* for eternity. I don't want that for anyone, so I do what I can to help them understand. Seems to me that I am acting within my faith to try proving it to someone else. It is rather presumptuous to say that I don't have faith because I'm trying to prove it.

I have no idea what you're trying to say, but it seems like you're questioning the authenticity of the modern day Bible. There have been literally thousands of pieces of manuscripts in many languages (even in original languages) that archeologists have found throughout the world in the last century that all help with the accuracy of translation. By putting together all of the pieces (there is actually a scientific process for it), they really can confirm that what you read in today's Bible is really what was in the original scriptures. While some translations may offer different words or phrases for different passages for clarity or perspective, the original meaning is usually still there and, if you wanted to, you could find a Bible that is actually written in the original language so you can decide the meaning for yourself.Oh you must have misinterpreted the fact that I quoted you to mean that my response was directly towards you. It wasn't. I'm just giving feeding the troll, who hasn't returned for some reason. I feel somewhat dejected now.

If you want to talk about your religious bull do so on a religious forum.

Of course there is, because you say so. I suppose I'm supposed to google now? the Onus of proof is on the claimant, so I'm not exactly motivated. And considering most of the original scriptures are gone I'm not sure any such proof could possibly be scientific.

Quote
While some translations may offer different words or phrases for different passages for clarity or perspective, the original meaning is usually still there and

Gotta stop you there. First, you say "original meaning" as if it's obvious. It never is. That's why there are so many different kinds of christianity. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a sect who took some other little out of context detail of some otherwise irrelevant book in the bible and came to the conclusion that Jesus always wore a hair bun, and of course anybody who doesn't think so will be damned to *censored* for all eternity, by the "Just and loving god".
Quote
if you wanted to you could find a Bible that is actually written in the original language so you can decide the meaning for yourself.
So now you're telling me I should read the Bible. And in the original language, no less. I'm not exactly keen on learning God's favourite language, Hebrew (I suppose it's mere coincidence that the people writing this stuff down weren't god and were merely "channeling his energies" or whatever the excuse they use.

I think the bigger question here is that he waited a *censored* of a long time to provide us with the rules of the game. tens of thousands of years worth of people died and went to *censored* because they didn't know about Jesus or God, because he didn't tell anybody until a few thousand years ago. That hardly seems to fit with the whole "God is Just but vengeful" thing, Not sure why they had to go there... oh yeah, because they didn't feel a certain way or believe in something that apparently existed even then but was just sorta being quiet on the sidelines. I suppose he took a few thousand years off. "I have created man! whew, I need a break" then he fell asleep on his heaven couch and woke up a couple thousand years later, and decided to make some rules. Of course being omnipresent he was able to make it so all the people everywhere who ever broke these rules were sent to the depths of *censored*. So, he contacted some clumsy oaf who managed to break the first tablets. Excellent choice there, you can choose anybody in the entire world, but you just happen to choose somebody living in the general area where civilization was based around that time period. Seems a little weird that North America is curiously absent from the entire thing. And don't pull that old hat nonsense "well, if you interpret this phrase to mean this" Why should we have to "interpret" the bible? It's like being given the rules to a game you've been playing for thousands of years and then being told "oh yeah, it's ROT-13 encoded". And that whole "but it's described pretty well (in prophecies) for not knowing what modern stuff was back then." is nonsense too, because I'm pretty sure the belief is that god wrote the bible, and god is omnipresent and everywhere and at every time and every place simultaneously, I'm sure at some point he would have picked up on what computers and their various parts were. He might have even got somebody to write it down in english originally, since he would have known that it would become one of the primary languages of the world; odd how he chose a language that was primary at that time, especially since he would have known it would fall out of favour and pretty much only get USED on movies to establish a character as a jewish stereotype. The entire "he knows everything and is omnipresent" concept I get, but somehow I guess he just sort of forgot what they were called and had to express himself as if he were somebody from that era who didn't understand these new things. I haven't seen these "prophecies" of which you speak... it took ages to find the references and I had to wade through all sorts of nonsensical confirmation biassed nonsense to find it, but here it is, one of the main ones that predicts television, computers, and the internet.

Quote
Revelation 11:7-10 states, "And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth."

That is pretty much the basis for the "the bible predicts the internet and tv and technology" argument. Clearly no sane argument can be constructed that could possibly waiver such a belief, because it's so utterly lacking in any sort of basic reason.

P.S love the whole "I'm trying to convince you all to believe like I do out of the goodness of my heart" bit. Really you made my heart bleed for your terrible conundrum. Since the bible says   an entire generation will not pass after Israel's establishment before the rapture or whatever it's called, I guess I will be witness to it. And I will most certainly say "well golly gee I admit I was WRONG" before being sent to the nether. Of course I'm rather certain nothing of such a nature will occur and the proponents will make up some ridiculous excuse, or maybe they'll discover a "translation error" or find some other way to interpret it so the "disaster" is still in the future. The entire thing tries to convert people with the nonsense that "well, if you don't, you will certainly go to *censored* when you die, but you won't even have lived your whole life, because the end is near. It keeps believers fearful so as to better control them, that's all. It has nothing to do with caring or compassion, it's about power.I've still got some facts for the debate, but it sounds like you've made up your mind..... good luck. For some reason it reminds me of those conspiracy theory websites. Those are a lot of fun to troll. It wouldn't be so fun to troll religious forums though, because religion is built on faith, not on stupidity like conspiracy theories. (Although I'm sure there are those that would disagree on one or both counts) And yet, at the same time there are many similarities. Sort of like fascism and communism; despite being on entirely separate sides of the ideological spectrum, they manage to be more similar then different in many respects.

He doesn't have to explicitly say. If somebody ASKS "can I have some milk" you assume they are going to use the milk, drink it, or perhaps craft it into a cake.

If somebody asks "do you like my X" they are asking for input. The fact that they were PROMPTED to ask this by being told it was annoying by somebody else means that it concerns them, even slightly, that people would find it annoying; therefore it's safe to assume that their intent is to gauge wether they should change their avatar, not just to ask the question and ignore the very input that they requested.
Asking for input doesn't automatically imply that a specific action will be taken as a result.  You've never ASKED for someone's input for the SOLE purpose of wanting to know what they think?  Or to simply start a conversation?  The question could be more like "What do you think of the weather today?"

Solve : BOO! Ohio; fill-in tax forms require Adobe Reader,?

Anyone wanting to download a 2010 fill-in Ohio Individual Income Tax Return will need Adobe Reader 9.1 or greater.  The IRS doesn't have such a requirement; their fill-in forms work with Foxit Reader.

Seriously, why not just use adobe? it costs just as much as foxit and is more compatible. If you're GOING to mention something about cpu and ram usage, try upgrading your system to something newer than a Pentium 2 and see how much it "slows" your computer down.
I've noticed that the knock off programs that are just trying to provide an alternative to big name products never get close to matching the capabilities of the program they're trying to mimic. I've used foxit before and wasn't all that impressed.

Also, it's not always laziness that causes incompatibilities. It could be a feature, security, or upper management issue that makes it misbehave in non-adobe readers.i opened it with adobe 9 and it was free Quote from: harry 48 on February 02, 2011, 05:10:30 PM

It's not. And thinking it is is nothing less then aprophrenic; I could post clips from Dumbo and be no less relevant.

I had to do some searching to find out you thought it was relevant:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=whambulance

"The imaginary rescue vehicle that will rescue you from someone's incessant whining over a trivial matter."

A most curious perspective, because
A:) it's not trivial, because it should be a standard PDF that opens with any PDF reader, not a specially designed PDF document that only opens with reader program. That would be like a Python or other script simply refusing to work on anything but one platform- for no reason at all.
B:) these aren't game instruction manuals we're talking about, Tax forms and their filing every year is anything but trivial, and providing PDF files that are by definition NOT PDF files (since they clearly do not conform to the published format, or more precisely use some nonstandard Bullcrap so that they only work with Adobe Reader; not doubt  some sort of extension that Adobe added so that they could get people to do exactly this for them. Let's hear it for fighting to good fight for large corporations like Adobe over the little guy, yay!

For all we know this is the default way files are saved by this Designer program. It's it's similar to the DOS fakeout stub that is stapled to the front of every windows application when it's compiled- the start of the file conforms to being a standard DOS executable, and it is usually a tiny stub that basically says "This program cannot be run in DOS mode" (for the  PE stub) or "This program requires Microsoft Windows" (for the NE stub). Basically, while it contains "extensions" to that standard form, (the windows application) it still FAKES out DOS by providing a valid executable to that. That is what seems to be going on here, the designer program (or the person who created the file) made it so the generated file had a "stub" page that could be read fine with any PDF reader, and conformed to the specification just fine, but also had other data that for some reason or another only the Adobe  Program can read. Most likely related to extensions for Adobe Reader.

What? Those are companies, not products. Adobe reader is free. Foxit reader is free. They both have paid products for creating PDF files, which nobody does except for those companies who like to cause pain for others by forcing PDF on them. Although to be fair PDF is better then .djvu for manuals.... I don't personally think that's the case for ebooks, however.

Quote
If you're going to mention something about cpu and ram usage, try upgrading your system to something newer than a Pentium 2 and see how much it "slows" your computer down.
I'll take you up on that challenge. Although I won't have to upgrade...

First, It's important to know that ones experience with a piece of software begins before  they are even using it- when they go to download it- how easy is it to download?

Adobe's download page:

http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Foxit's download page

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/

They are both pretty easy to find, Adobe's site takes a little effort but only because they have far more products. Their home page takes a tad longer to load, but I don't think very many people would find the download page by going straight to Adobe.com; instead doing a google search to find it.

So, Foxit's download is pretty easy- you click the link, and the setup program downloads.

Unfortunately, as with all Adobe downloads, you have to install a Download Manager. A freaking browser ADD ON. just to get the product. What the *censored* is that? Nonsense, is what it is. And remember to uncheck the "include mcaffee security scan in download" button unless for some reason you've decided, "you know, even though I'm here to download a PDF viewer for that manual that came on disk with my monitor (or whatever), I think I'll also get an AV tool that has nothing to do with what I'm trying to do" thankfully Adobe knows almost everybody will want it (ha) so they leave it checked for you.

So, Now I have to restart the browser- because for some reason Adobe has this strange aversion to providing a simple damned HTTP download for their product, instead requiring people to go through some ritual involving a completely unnecessary piece of crap "download manager". I've covered these before. By this time of course I would already have the foxit reader installer on-hand.

So, I have restarted Firefox (again, I'd liek to emphasize that that should not be necessary at all, but it is, because, despite my requesting a download for a PDF viewer, adobe has decided to install a Download manager for me, wether this is OPTIONAL and I can choose another method, I don't know. but this is clearly stupid. lazy? well, no, not really. over-engineering, perhaps; or Not-Invented Here syndrome. And now, after stopping a few of the videos I had open in other tabs that started playing after the browser restarted, and kind of puzzling for a bit about exactly what I'm supposed to do now, the "Adobe Download Manager" shows itself. Why is it a browser addon anyway? Is it really integrated with the browser in any way? Not really. I get to watch it download Adobe Reader. Finally. After installing another, UNRELATED piece of software to "manage" this download, I am finally able to download the software I went there to get in the first place. Of course, while I wait for it to download Adobe takes the time to also download and stream advertisements onto the same download screen, so clearly this is more a gimmick to force more advertisements and partner company products (the mcaffee thing) rather then provide a easy experience. I feel like a damned trained circus animal being forced to jump through all these hoops.

So, Finally I have them both installed. So I go to start Adobe Reader; I am greeted by the Flash CS5 start screen! WHAT? oh, wait, nevermind, it just looks very similar. Guess they didn't get that "splash screens should be unique" memo, but that's alright. I am then greeted with the EULA.

This is after the software is installed. It's not really that bad, but consider for a moment that the EULA is usually presented before the product in question is installed; now, let's think back- why might that not have been done? Perhaps it is in some way related to to the vastly unorthodox method that I had to use to install it, like- say- installing a browser add-on?

I'm sort of curious now how it works with Internet Explorer...

Somehow it uses the same "download manager", so I guess  it's not really a browser addon, it just sorta pretends to b e one for Firefox... either  that or I already have the addon installed for IE (doesn't look like it, though)... of course I've somehow managed to get used to the fact that browser addons are even remotely related to this task, which they of course are not.

So anyway, I started it a few times, so now good old superfetch get's it up in a hurry (I no longer even see the splash screen)
They both (Foxit and Adobe Reader) Open PDF files rather quickly.  I opened a 70+MB PDF file and they both opened it nice and quick. Although Adobe Reader decided to tell me I could "comment" it or something, I wasn't really paying attention, so I'm not sure what it was blathering about. At that point however I wouldn't have been surprised if every third page of the PDF ended up as a full page advertisement for colgate toothpaste or something...

Anyway, Foxit, after opening the PDF (and it has been open for several days and opened a of PDF files since aside from this one) was consuming about 40MB of RAM.

Adobe Reader, before even opening any file, sat at around 100MB or so. After opening the file though, things got interesting; not only did that first process go up to about 150MB usage, but it also spawned a second process (why? what reason? I have no idea) that took about 80MB, and process explorer highlighted orange. (indicating it was a "job"... to be fair it highlighted foxit in orange as well, but foxit didn't seem to randomly spawn processes for no discernable reason) It was this second process that suddenly became responsible for the window.... No idea what's going on there. (by which I mean, I couldn't switch to the first process using process explorer, and it had no windows, but now those same window handles appeared as part of the other process, some bit of crazy  (and entirely undocumented) weird stuff going on there, since there is no documented way to switch an already created window to another thread... And the handles were the same, so they weren't being destroyed and recreated. No idea what is going on there. Perhaps using messing around with the wholly undocumented internal windows structures of processes is what you would call a security feature. I mean, sure, it will crash if MS ever changes it (which they will) but hey, Gerald the intern needed something to do that weekend. While I was in Process Explorer, I took stock of the extra processes I had. Now I had new friends, for example, FlashUtil_10gActiveX.exe was now a permanent resident, as was Adobe Getplus or something was also running, No idea what  that is, most likely part of that "downloader" nonsense.

So, alright- at a quick glance Adobe Reader isn't that bad.

So, I decided to compare CPU usage, by using process explorer's built in temporary "log" of CPU activity; I scrolled all the way through and back up the document in Reader a few times, and then switched to Foxit and did the same thing, and back to adobe etc- about 3 times total.

looking at the process explorer "log" I saw three distinct spikes- all Adobe reader- each time it had pegged two of my cores and had sat at about 40-47% CPU usage. meanwhile, hovering over the relatively small bumps between them I saw that foxit got to about 10 percent usage. There is definitely a difference in the amount of CPU they use. And as my specs clearly show, this is a quad core, not a pentium 2 machine. Drawing text should not require two cores.

I've noticed that the knock off programs that are just trying to provide an alternative to big name products never get close to matching the capabilities of the program they're trying to mimic.
They aren't trying to "mimic" the program. They are an alternative. They aren't "knock off's" either, because a knock-off implies the theft of an idea, and the PDF format is now freely available (and even if it wasn't they would have had to figure it out, which is a lot easier then just copying the cast mould for a new GI joe knock off). Same for OpenOffice; I'm not exactly a fan, but it's an alternative program that can open the Binary Format of several Microsoft Office applications- not because they "stole" or even reverse engineered the format, but because thet used the documentation that has been freely available on that format since 1992.
Quote
Also, it's not always laziness that causes incompatibilities.
Yes. It is. If a PDF file can only be opened with Adobe Reader, then it is clearly not following the PDF format to the letter (the very same format that is published, and the same specification that other Readers use). Of you cannot read a PDF file with Foxit reader, then it probably won't work with any number of other PDF tools, such as scripting with python's PDF module. Needless to say requiring Adobe Reader is silly; and according to Harry_48 it opens with 9.0; but the text states that 9.1 is required, so which is it? It w as created with Acrobat 8.0, so logically it should only require 8.0 or later... why does it say 9.1? It's a designed in feature for the  PDF itself, not the program; the people who made the PDF for one reason or another decided that people would have to use Adobe reader for this. Thing is... there is no reason for such a limitation.

Also, it appears that the reason for this incompatibility is because it uses a "extension" to the PDF format (I say "extension" but what I really mean is "nonstandard bastardization") that  somehow allows the PDF to download new content from the web. I was able to get it showing the forms but I was quickly informed of some nonsense that it couldn't connect for some reason, and it blathered on about Ohio or something. Apparently now I can't file this form online, which is fine by me... so was that it? the entire reason for requiring Adobe reader was for it to be able to tell me that I couldn't file it directly via Reader by filling out the entries and sending it back? I mean, that would be a sensible reason, but It's kind of stupid to absolutely require that that feature be available; removing that would no doubt allow it to open with Foxit.

But the thing is, it's not just foxit that it won't open with. Any PDF reading utility won't be able to read it; so converting it to a word document (for whatever reason) will probably not work... unless you use some sort of Reader or Acrobat plugin.

Quote
It could be a feature, security, or upper management issue that makes it misbehave in non-adobe readers.
I will attest that it isn't laziness; in fact they did extra work to make it not work in foxit, for what appears to be no reason at all. I'm not sure how a PDF not opening in a standard PDF reader can be called a feature (that would be like if you could create a word document in word that can't be opened in Open Office, nobody would be likely to call that a "feature" and most openOffice users trying to Open that document will call it a pain in the *censored*. Additionally, saying "well, just use Word" isn't a solution either, since many of those Openoffice users may be Linux users, and Word is not something that runs easily under a Linux System, with or without WINE.

Adobe Reader is on Linux... but it's just awful. the version is several revisions behind any of the Other OS releases, the keyboard shortcuts are all wrong, and all in all it just plain blows in comparison to something like kPDF.can someone summarize BC's post for me? Solve : FCC 'Home wireless will be great!'?

Answer»

Home wireless will get better, so says the Federal Communications Commission.
In essence, that is what they said. but it didn't make the headlines.
Last year the FCC in the United States announced that a large segment of the extreme high-frequency band will be available for unlicensed  short range use. Such applications would include such things as body ending, and automobile radar collision prevention. But there is a lot more.
Many other countries are doing the same.]

The really big news may comes in the area of wireless home entertainment, including computer gaming. A piece of spectrum that has been set aside for unlicensed use is said to be a great piece of trash. Nobody wants it. Except the astronomers. The range is extremely limited and it is practically line of sight only.

[Both military and commercial investigators all over the world have been working on EHF applications for several years. This post is about the FCC decision to let vendors start selling EHF wireless devices to the general public with no license required. ]

Actually, Line of Sight is its big advantage. Consider the following.
Someday in the future some telecommunications company will provide all the data service you need through a single eyebrow able right to your doorstep. Or maybe very close your doorstep. Now you have the choice of either wiring your house with Ethernet, or with all the people, or using the new extreme high-frequency band to distribute information to route your house. There'll be enough spectrum space to handle all the data transmission two could possibly want inside your house. No need to run a cable to every television set or entertainment center you have. It can all be connected to a wireless system based on the new 60 GHz license free band.

In this line of sight. Line of sight and nothing more. It will not bother your neighbors unless you have a window that faces the window on their house. But even then there is so much bandwidth available that you can use different channels, if need be. But what about rooms that have closed doors and no openings near the ceiling to allow extreme high-frequency signals to pass? There are already is a tasteful solution for that problem, but I'm not going to give the details here, instead let somebody else the announcement later on. But I'll give you a clue, it's not as hard as one might imagine. In fact, it is cheaper and easier than putting in Ethernet. And much, much more effective than our current Wi-Fi system. It's all about the bandwidth. More bandwidth than you can imagine. Literally. And it is Free. Like in Free.

[References upon request. But it is hard to find a single article the explains the potential. The mass media don't understand it and have put it on the back page.. Yet it has the potential of turning the home entertainment industry upside down.]

To do your own research, start  here. (NOTE reference to 60GHz band.)

body ending??Whoa,   ah.. scanning. Blame the spell checker

When you go to the airport they can see through your cloths with EHF radar. If you don't like it, you get a body search by a human.

But the point of my  post was how EHF will impact home entertainments systems. It has not yet been determined that a EHF body scanner could be part of home entertainment.

Oh no! Not my cloths!Let me see here I can either use one wireless router to run everything I need to in my house or I can install multiple devices to run the same things due to "Line of sight".

I will pick one wireless router any day.

Do you really understand how "Line of Sight" works? Have you ever propped your feet up while watching TV and suddenly the remote doesn't work due to your feet being in the way. Guess what causes that? Your feet are blocking the "line of sight" between the remote and the sensor.

I would HATE to have a laptop that I can only use in one spot in my house due to some stupid line of sight issues or be downloading a file just to have some one walk by and interrupt the line of sight and have to start over on the down load due to the lost signal.

As far as gaming goes I would really hate to be in the middle of a fierce Qbert battle just to have fluffy the family hippo decide to nap on the back of the sofa and block the signal.

I am not even going to get started on the whole "And it is Free. Like in Free." remark.Mroilfield, your ASSESSMENT is correct. That is why the general consensus is that the whole EHF thing is of limited value. Many Engineers call it a 'junk' band.

At one time the Wi-Fi spectrum was not available for unlicensed use. That  held back the development of UHF technology called "spread spectrum:"  Once government restrictions were lifted, it became useful.

The problem with current Wi-Fi systems is the lack of bandwidth. It is getting to the point where your neighbors interfere with your connection speed. It goes through walls and fences. Only ten narrow channels available.

The link below is not about the new 60GHz band. Rather, it explains why "spread spectrum" is still a young science and may hold the key to future development of  "line of sight" communications

Yes, the new 60GHz band is very much like the infrared. True, almost anything will block it. But it has bandwidth. Lots of bandwidth. It can do things not yet possible with infrared. I don't care how much bandwidth it has if I get disconnected every time some one or something passes thru the line of sight or if I have to have multiple units spread out thru my house to make sure I have line of sight where I need I still won't use it.

That is like giving some one a Lamborghini and telling them they can drive it as fast as they want in the straightaways but then putting them on a track that is 90% curves. True the power and speed possibilities are there but it would be majorly suck as you hardly ever get to take advantage of it unless you just drive back and forth on the straightaway and forget the rest of the track. The line of sight issue is not going to stop 60 GHz wireless from being a success. That issue has already been resolved. (Please let us know if you want the technical references on this. It is very boring stuff.)
At this point the disclaimer is appropriate. We do not represent in any way many companies who are actively involved in developing new products and standards for the 60 GHz wireless structure. Much of the information available over the Internet is already dated at least one -year-old. Still, it is not out of date news. Here is just one of many recent references that makes this point.

...a big step up from 802.11n, currently the fastest standard widely supported. It would be a huge boon to people doing lots of wireless file transfer: for example, it would make 1080p high-definition video streaming super speedy

Below is one of the most recent reports I have found on the future of the 60 GHz wireless story. It does get rather heavy on the technical stuff, but it does show the industry is quite serious about deployment of high quality, high performance and low cost wireless equipment that uses the 60 GHz band.

Well, the solution is a big messy. see, to prevent your feet obstructing the signal, you are required to chop off your feet. If people walk in front of it and block your signal... well, let's just say they would be better off not doing so.

on the other hand, since EVERYBODY generally keeps the default settings and almost all routers seem to default to channel 6, merely switching to one of the other fourteen channels. there are 14 Wifi channels, not 10. adjacent channels have some overlap but that's hardly a problem). Of course many of these channels are restricted in different locales; 12,13, and 14 are not available for use in North AMERICA; (that still makes you incorrect since there are still 11 channels to use, not 10). Additionally, as I noted, almost all "neighbourly" interference can be eliminated merely by changing the channel, since almost nobody changes the default you'll be all alone.

Additionally, you seem to present a dual case; the range is bad when you compare it to this new 60ghz tech, and the range is good when it is a demerit for it, such as for interference with other connections. It cannot be both. Additionally, when you say it "goes through walls and fences" you are somewhat incorrect; the signal is weakened by having to travel through anything but air. This is why the general consensus is to attempt to make sure any connection points and the straight line between them and the access point go through as little solid material as possible; ideally, any direct line travel would be as perpendicular as possible to any walls, going through a 2 foot wall at an angle is going to make it seem like longer then 2 feet in the context of signal degradation. Even with such signal degradation, it's still better then the signal being stopped by a stray bit of fluff sitting in front of the receiver. You're leaning into this whole salesman thing too hard. you're ignoring the obvious weaknesses of the technology, and in fact you are saying the weaknesses of the tech (the fact that it can be blocked by nearly anything) as an advantage "your neighbors cannot interfere with your connection!". Meanwhile, you say "the industry is serious" about it. That cannot possibly be true because if they were serious we would be using it for the applications you specify- it is in use, but not for network applications of the same nature as Wifi.

How many people share the "Geek-9pm" user name? You  keep saying "us", "we", and "our" so you are either working with other people to push this technology or multiple people are using the same user name.

If it is multiple people using the same user name that would explain a lot.

I am still waiting for you to explain how the line of sight issue has been resolved.

nice one but i dont like the flooring  Scientists have warned politicians to take preventative action as a superstorm, dubbed the 'Big One', is expected to hit California.

Scientists warn of 'superstorm' heading for California
US Geological Survey scientists predict that the storm could last 40 days, PRODUCING up to 10-feet of rain and causing £190 billion ($300 billion) worth of flooding damage, which would make it the most destructive storm in California's modern history.

National Weather Service images show an ATMOSPHERIC river system - a huge hose-like flow of Pacific Ocean moisture - moving onto the state increasing the risk of the winter weather phenomenon.

The storm scenario, combining prehistoric geologic flood history with modern flood mapping and climate-change projections, was released at an ARkStorm Summit in Sacramento, California last week.

The scenario suggests that a quarter of houses in the Golden State could be battered by flooding.

Weather experts say the statewide weather event, which strikes once every 100-200 years could bring an unprecedented scale of destruction. There is also a considerable risk of wind damage to the eastern part of the state, according to chief scientist Lucy Jones.

The last superstorm hit California between 1861 and 1862, but scientists predict that the threat of another one looms closer as weather patterns become more volatile, due to rising temperatures in the atmosphere.

US Geological Survey Director, Marcia McNutt said: "The time to begin taking action is now, before a devastating natural hazard event occurs. This scenario demonstrates firsthand how science can be the foundation to help build safer communities. The ARkStorm scenario is a scientifically vetted tool that emergency responders, elected officials and the general public can use to plan for a major catastrophic event to help prevent a hazard from becoming a disaster."

Jones added: "This is not just a Californian problem. There will be disruption to ports and transportation systems. The economic impact will be felt across the country."

"For a storm which can cause four times as much damage as earthquakes, Californians are less aware of RISKS they face from floods."

Federal and state emergency management officials met last week to discuss emergency preparations for possible superstorms.

Jones added: "This is not just a Californian problem. There will be disruption to ports and transportation systems. The economic impact will be felt across the country."
What did that mean? Perhaps he was thinking about all the Californiass who gamble in Las Vegas, Nevada. After the storm, many will be without money. That would further weaken the economy of Nevada.10 years ago supposedly Vancouver Island was supposed to sink Due to a super mega earthquake.

Needless to say it didn't. There have been a few relatively mild earthquakes but nothing too serious.

So "expected to" means "may or may not happen at some undetermined and impossible to predict time in the future" which is not very helpful. That would be like meteorologists saying "it may rain at some point in the future on a day that is yet to be known". It's vague and nondescript, and when you use something like that in conjunction with the word "disaster" you're just fear-mongering.if the report is true the people are in for a lot of troubleHey, why worry about it, the worlds going to end in 2012 anyway, or didn't you see the movie. neither does that. And there isn't a moving lake in Australia from what I can tell.Rural Australian towns are bracing themselves for another week of flooding as a vast 'lake' continues to spread across the country's southeast.

Australia braces itself for more flooding

Video: Australia braces itself for more flooding
Weather reports suggest a potential tropical cyclone is also threatening the northeast of the country.

Flooding began more than a month ago in Australia's northeast Queensland state, where 30 people have died, more than 30,000 homes have been damaged and crops and coal exports lost.

Record rains have now shifted the flood emergency focus to the southeast Victoria state, which is usually parched during the southern summer.

A lake resembling an inland sea, 55 miles long and 25 miles wide northwest of the Victorian capital of Melbourne, will continue making it's way inland until it spills into the Murray River.

Residents have been sandbagging furiously as the Lodden, Avoca and Murray Rivers all converge at Swan Hill.

The city continues to clear up the devastation left by the flood waters as the search for victims goes on.
no matter how high flood waters get, calling it a "lake" is merely a metaphor.

Solve : How the Internet Started?

Answer»

Perhaps this has been around before, but anyway here goes. overthehill

Could this be TRUE

How the Internet started

A revelation with an Incredibly Big Message (IBM):

Well, you might have thought that you knew how the Internet started,
but here's the TRUE story ....

In ancient Israel , it came to pass that a trader by the name of
Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot.

And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg.
Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com.

And she said unto Abraham, her husband: "Why dost thou travel so far
from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever
leaving thy tent?"

And Abraham did look at her - as though she were several saddle bags
short of a CAMEL load, but simply said: "How, dear?"

And Dot replied: "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in
between to send messages saying what you have for
sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price.

And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's
Pony Stable (UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with
the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success.
Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having
to move from his tent.

To prevent neighbouring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying,
Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew.
It was called Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed
a language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew To The People (HTTP)

But this success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secrete
himself inside Abraham's drum and began to siphon off some of
Abraham's business. But he was soon discovered, arrested and prosecuted -
for insider trading.

And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy
horsefly take to camel dung.

They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS.

And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the
deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were
going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother WILLIAM of Gates,
who bought off every drum maker in the land.

And indeed did insist on drums to be made that would work only with
Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks.

And Dot did say: "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken
over by others."

And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel , or eBay as it came to
be known. He said: "We need a name that reflects what we are."

And Dot replied: "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators."
"YAHOO," said Abraham.
And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com.

Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated
Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around the countryside.
It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE)

And that is how it all began.

Solve : What to do if bitten by a Coral snake in the USA?

Answer»

The coral snake is among the most dangerous.
In the USA you are in real trouble it one bites you. You have to GO to a HOSPITAL.
Quote

Antivenom (or antivenin or antivenene) is a biological product used in the treatment of venomous bites or stings. Antivenom is created by milking venom from the desired snake, spider or insect. The venom is then diluted and injected into a HORSE, sheep, goat or cat. The subject animal will undergo an immune response to the venom, producing antibodies against the venom's active molecule which can then be harvested from the animal's blood and used to treat envenomation. Internationally, antivenoms must conform to the standards of Pharmacopoeia and the World Health Organization (WHO).[1]
...
In the U.S. the only approved antivenom for pit viper (rattlesnake, copperhead and water moccasin) snakebite is based on a purified product made in sheep known as CroFab. It was approved by the FDA in October, 2000. U.S. coral snake antivenom is no longer manufactured, and remaining stocks of in-date antivenom for coral snakebite expired in the Fall of 2009, leaving the U.S. without a Coral snake antivenom. Efforts are being made to obtain approval for a coral snake antivenom produced in Mexico which would work against U.S. coral snakebite, but such approval remains speculative. In the absence of antivenom, all coral snakebite should be treated in a hospital by elective endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation until the effects of coral snake neurotoxins abate. It is important to remember that respiratory paralysis in coral snakebite can occur suddenly, often up to 12 or more hours after the bite, so intubation and ventilation should be employed in anticipation of respiratory failure and not after it occurs, when it may be too late.

Do you just surf the web looking for things to post?

The below quote taken from your wikipedia quote makes absolutely no sense. It is either expired or in-date but it can't be both.

Quote
remaining stocks of in-date antivenom for coral snakebite expired in the Fall of 2009,
I think it is interesting. Useful information for people who spend a lot of time outdoors and camping.
Here in SA we have the puff adder, one bite from that guy and you have something like 20min to get to a hospital that has the antivenom.

The quote that the in-date antivenom expired in 2009 makes perfect sense - the antivenom that could have been used expired in 2009, so at the moment there is nothing that can be used.

After he died he was still called the last survivor.

Now back to topic. Hhere is a video about how to identify the Coral snake in North America. Does not apply to other parts of the world.

Identifying North American Snakes - Coral Snakes No....he WAS  the last survivor...then he died.

I never implied that he was...
Right, but if he had been bitten in 2007 there still would be coral snake anti venom that would have not yet expired. The expiration date was 2009 for existing stock of coral snake anti-venom that was otherwise identified as in-date material before it became out-date material.

The original quote was:
Quote

ACTUALLY, there might be  some stock left, but out of date.

Michael Thorpe (43), from Perth, died after being bitten by the tiny tiger snake that was only about 30 cm long. Police say that Thorpe had delayed calling the emergency services and that led to the poison being able to spread and kill him quickly.

Thorpe died shortly after arriving at the Joondalup Health Campus. Health Department spokeswoman Crystal Fairbairn said that 77 people had so far been treated for snake bites in Western Australia this year.

i completely disagree with the information given on this SITE - http://www.megaessays.com/viewpaper/45570.html
that's my opinion. i believe that it's all got to do with your level of maturity, initial mental stability, and your upbringing. i've been listening to heavy metal from the time i was 4, and i'm listening to bands such as slayer and slipknot to this day, i find it has a calming effect on me, but MAYBE i'm just mentally disturbed to begin with

No offense, but I think you're mentally disturbed for Slipknot to calm you

Maybe it's because you've been listening to it for years.lol i am disturbed... that's a good band too come to think of it

but it's not just heavy metal that CALMS me. i usually feel like hitting someone or something around me unless i'm listening to anything that can be considered 'music'', not rap or anything, but i think that's mainly because i work with pc's a lot  It has long been suggested that “music soothes the savage beast.” But is this true? And if it is, does this have any implication where humans are concerned? The answer, apparently, is yes. To illustrate this, researchers point to the different physiological changes that take place within the human body in response to different sounds and noises. A loud noise that shatters the silence sets the human heart racing and stimulates a rush of adrenaline that prepares you for flight. In contrast a soft, soothing sound helps us to relax.

In my own humble opinion, and I am not trying to star a flamewar, I hate all of those groups.
I do, however, love listening to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest (that's the only metal I LISTEN to really).
The former - I listened to them by accident when I was looking for something else and liked them.
The latter, I was forced to listen to on pain of a fate worse than death (imprisonment in Raptor's basement and endless humiliation on BF2142) by the one and only Raptor.
But I do like them.really? sounds fun what does raptor listen to?Heavy metal AFAIK.AFAIK? meaning.... lol i'm not too familiar with leet speak or any msn lingo

EDIT: oh... got it...wait doesn't calum live in holland? there's something funky goin on here.... there must be an organisation of CH moderators living in holland if you know him  I live in England.
Raptor lives in Holland.
He isn't a moderator anyway.raptor is close enough to being a moderator in my opinion... how many posts has he got now? nearly 12,746,000. What's his status again? forum overlord? yeah, i thought so. it's all a conspiracy.to get back on topic. i listen to all the bands in the poll, except the last one. but slipknot is by far my favourite. pantera/metallica influenced and inspired my band though, so i won't forget them.

Somehow I thought that when you divide a large number by three small prime numbers, the answer WOULD not be even be close to division by some other small prime numbers. What is the trick?

erm..........the first comment under the video
Quote

This is because the product of 7, 11 and 13 makes 1001. Any number presented in the way described in the video can be divided by 1001. If we do the calculation backwards, and start with any number, such as 673, you multiply it by 1, then 1000, then add them TOGETHER. No matter what 3 digit number you start with, it will always repeat itself when multiplied by this number. This is because any 3 digit number timesd by 1000 will equal that number followed by 3 0's. These are where the times 1 goes.
Thank you. Now I get it.

Disclaimer. There are wide viewpoints on this subject
Quote

Broadly SPEAKING, there are two approaches to the issue. The animal welfare position holds that there is nothing inherently wrong with using animals for human purposes, such as food, clothing, entertainment, and research, but that it should be done in a humane way that minimizes unnecessary PAIN and suffering. Animal rights theorists criticize this position, arguing that the words "unnecessary" and "humane" are subject to widely differing interpretations, and that the only way to ensure protection for animals is to end their status as property, and to ensure that they are never used as commodities. Laws concerning animal cruelty are designed to prevent needless cruelty to animals, rather than killing for other aims such as food, or they concern species not eaten as food in the country involved, such as those regarded as pets.

hi patio , i'm not discussing politics its only a clock counting money owed    do you think the figure is way to littleI think I'm tired of your passive-aggressive attitude TOWARD America.Almost EVERY country in the world is in debt.

You cannot take a single flat number and say it "means more" then a corresponding number from another country.

As a percentage of GDP, for example, Canada's Debt is a good 20% higher then the U.S.

Another example:

the U.S's approx Debt as of 30 June 2009  is about 13,450,000,000,000 dollars. (about 43,758 per capita) and it is 94% if their GDP- that is, their Gross Domestic product is then the entire debt.

as of 30 June 2009, the U.K external debt lists at 9,088,000,000,000, which is 147,060 per capita, and a WHOPPING 416% of their GDP; that is, their debt is over 4 times their Gross Domestic product.

Now I ask, who is more likely to get out of debt? The country whose GDP is higher then their debt or the country whose debt is 4 times their GDP? Perhaps there should be a novelty time-based counter that counts U.K debt clock?

I've found the issue of foreign debt quite CURIOUS, since almost every country has some debt- so the question is- WHO is the creditor? you WOULD think that if, say, Canada borrowed a few million from the U.S and then later the U.S borrowed a few million from Canada (well, it's not direct, it would occur via export/import value difference I imagine) but, you would think that they would consider it even, but somehow both countries have netted themselves more debt? (edit: appears I have confused foreign debt with the trade deficit) It's all quite confusing. I doubt anybody truly understands *censored* it all means. Maybe it's a ploy by government accountants to make sure they keep their job; enforce all sorts of ridiculous debt-related rules so that no country can ever get out of debt, and considering no country seems to NOT have debt, the question (as I noted) is who are they indebted to? It certainly can't be other countries, since those other countries are indebted to them and other countries. In fact, it seems every country owes every country but at the same time no country owes any other country. *censored* this confusing financial talk. Perhaps there are aliens involved here somewhere, since if this external debt is not of Earth origin clearly we are borrowing from some other planet.
To some extent, Britain's high gross external debt to GDP ratio reflects the big part played by banking and financial services in the UK economy. According to National Statistics the UK External Debt – (gross) is £6,290 bn - this is roughly 430% of GDP -  of which only £26bn is owed by government. The biggest balance is the banking sector which owes nearly £4,000 bn. These banking liabilities should be cancelled out by an equal amount of foreign assets. Though if these assets deteriorated, the UK’s position would definitely worsen. Other countries with higher ratios are Ireland 1004% Luxembourg 3854% Netherlands 470% Liberia 606%. Except for the last, these are countries where banking plays a big role in the economy.

I believe the UK's net external debt is nearer 30% of GDP. Certainly it is not out of line with other G7 countries. Indeed, Moody's and Standard & Poor's consider that external debt ratios are irrelevant from a credit perspective for countries with fully convertible reserve currencies and do not even quote them (Fitch Ratings do).

Financial Debt = Monies borrowed upon that eventually come due...

Trade deficit = The balance between goods sold and goods imported.

2 very different animals. However expanding on both BC and Salmon's comments the interesting thing to consider...which most don't do is where is that debt stored ? ?
It's important to TRACK the trends of who your biggest creditors are and how efficiently you have spread your borrowing...
This is more an indicator of if you have a healthy debt to loss ratio than sheer numbers...

Anyone can borrow money for chrisssake...it's who you owe that says where you are financially...

Carry on...In 1995 when I first got a mortgage to buy a £37,500 house, I was earning £15,000 per year, so my debt-to-annual-income ratio was 250%. I did not consider myself to be a basket case, even though at the start the interest rate was nearly 7%.

I think I'm tired of your passive-aggressive attitude toward America.

and pray tell me of any derogatory remarks i have made towards the country of America or in fact any country

and to all other readers i just put a clock in a post    if there was one for Britain i would have put it in Just to add my 2 pennies worth and I have no illusions of understanding all this to it's fullest. But when the UK bailed out the banks as they did in the US, the UK government owned a percentage of the banks that were helped. Surely this can then be off-set against the debt that is owed as this is income that should go directly to paying off said debt.
I may be way off but thought I would mention it. Quote from: Mulreay on September 22, 2010, 03:01:47 PM

you are right but they said they will not sell them for about 4 or 5 years in that time the wealth will have increased and they will be debt free and so worth more , and so the gov; will have made money on the back of the banks by selling their shares Quote from: harry 48 on September 22, 2010, 02:57:38 PM

Solve : Forum was down???

Answer»

Hi yall.

Its been a while since I was able to get on the forums, PREVIOUSLY I was just taken to a blank-white page, with no source code WHATSOEVER if I selected that option...

What was going on?

CH admin's last post was on September, so how the heck were the forums down, on, down again for 2 months, and then back on again?

Thanks, looking forward for some answers here. There was nothing wrong with the Forums. Quote from: patio on November 16, 2010, 10:18:46 AM

There was nothing wrong with the Forums.

Then explain why the forums were inaccesible, only leading to a blank-white page then. (Or atleast on my side they were inaccessible, though, the rest of the site was accessible.

Why was this happening? I just want to know, if you MIND. :/

Patio's 2nd post:

You don't owe me anything. Jeez man you don't have to be so rude about it. ( So now I SEE you're purposely treating me bad... or is that my imagination? )We owe you an explanation? Yeah - it was a conspiracy. Quote from: deargodpleasehelp on November 16, 2010, 04:03:35 PM

Patio's 2nd post:

Patio only posted once.Over the last few months the forums have not been down. There have been a few hiccups but nothing that lasted more than a few minutes. It's likely something to do with your ISP or your Internet Browser. If it happens in the future my first recommendation would be to clear your Internet browser history and try again.
