Solve : The number 1337?

As is normal with many YTMND vids, you'll have to refresh (F5) after it loads, or sound and video won't sync.

I had no idea...I've always thought leet speak was for script kiddies so this suits me very well. Whoooo..... freaky.....
Congratulations, you're all F***ED for worshipping Satan!!!

But seriously, you could probably do that with any number if you looked at the HUNDREDS of ways to work stuff out.

I think he has a THING for him Ah yes, leet speak! Even at my age, when it first hit the net, I recognized it as a kiddy toy! But (mumble) years ago, we used these and other numbers on our calculators! So the numbers are nothing new. Do you suppose these little ones just adapted their calculator numbers to the net?

And, you gotta know, I learned a LOT from much younger users, about computer/net things. Ran my first IRC server with the help of a 13 yo. As mentioned earlier I'm sure anything could be construed enough to make it into something else. Still entertaining though.

Funny picture of a 1337 computer from Dell:

http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/6315/screenshotfp5.png

A while back I thought of creating a new member group for users who have 1337 posts. This post re-inspired me to do that so when a user now has 1337 posts they'll be Leet until the next post.
Oh oh oh can we get a special badge for the 1337th post?? A special smilie? A rap on the knuckles for posting that many in a week?

Too funny, that pic! Wonder if they built me one with Win2000 Pro how much more that would be.

Tired here. Need a yawning smilie. Speaking of which, will other smilies work here from a forum that is not BBcode?

Solve : LOTRO or WOW?

Answer»

i am looking to buy a new video game to entertain myself with and i NARROWED down to two, Lord Of The Rings Online; Shadows of Angmar or world of warcraft, i have done my research but still can't decide. so i would like some 3rd party input on the games.
i know that lotro is more quest orientated, and wow is more pvp orientated so, how about a little input

I have way too much experience with WOW (3+ years including one of the initial 1,000 to get in first beta)and a little experience with LOTRO so I believe I can answer your question, which may or may not be bias. First the answer -- I'd go with WOW. Below are some of my reasoning.

- WOW does in fact have better PvP (still not good enough for me though), but it is a much more enjoyable experience than LOTRO. If you're hardcore PvP and can wait you may just want to wait for Warhammer Online or just go with WOW until WAR.

- WOW has the biggest MMO community out there. I guarantee someone you know is already playing it. If you do go with WOW ask around and see what server your friends / family are playing on and join that server.

- WOW has a fantastic website and community. It's had a lot of time to develop.

- WOW has better dungeons although for the non-hardcore MMO player may find it difficult to explore all of them.

- If you've played any of the previous Blizzard games especially WOW you'll have a greater experience being able to play each of the races and explore the world.

- LOTRO has slightly better graphics (it's a NEWER engine) and some better aspects but nothing worth changing for.

I loved my WOW experience best MMO experience I've had (I've played ever MMO out there), I only quit because it was too time consuming and addicting, so be warned. thaks for the input i loved warcraft 3, even diablo 2 lod i was so ADDICTED to them both, all day even on school nights i was up till 3 even 4 in the morning playing, but on the other hand i also thought lotr was the greatest thing till pirates. i suppose 30 dollars for lotro compared to 15 for WoW may effect my decisionnow what can i do to make my gaming experience more smooth, all it does is chop and skip and lag, i have a compaq presario 3R1103WM and I put a ram stick into it, it was the largest one from a new dell that dont work. What type of video card do you have in there how much video RAM?i dont know, where to look for that, but it does have an INTEL(R) Extreme Graphics icon down in the systrayDownload, unzip, install and run Everest Home Edition
Everest

Select Computer>Summary from the left hand screen.
Right click in the right hand screen & select Copy All
Paste the details in here.I tried doing a search on your model number but couldn't come up with anything. However, I'd assume that whatever video card it came with it's not much especially for gaming. You can almost always get a great deal of performance increase if you upgrade the video card to a more top of the line video card.

You don't need to get top of the line or most expensive video card out there. But a decent card with 256MB (HECK probably even 128MB would be better) should be fine. But do at least a little research or read a review on the card you're interested in getting.

Link to new egg video card pagewell i was thinking about getting a nvidia geforce for like 65 bux. but i do have a 82845g intel(R) extreme graphics card and a 82801db ultra ata STORAGE controler -24CB I don't know what the 65 dollar nvidia card is that you're getting but I'd definitely consider upgrading from the 82845g, especially if you're going to be doing a lot of gaming or WOW.to tellyou the truth the one i have works pretty good but at times it tends tolag a littlei love WOW !!

Solve : Graphics To Large?

Answer»

I plugged in a 98 I had in the closet for years, & unfortunately, everything looks bigger than what it use to. It's like I have to reduce the size of the graphics somehow, I go to DISPLAY Properties but there's nothing there like
on my XP which has resolution and sizes, and make images smaller and so on. The 98 hasn't got that. Just 16 Colors or 256, & there's a slide that goes from left to right suppose to be for making everything smaller os something, & if you slide it to the right, a small screen shows everything in it becoming smaller, and the number changes from 16 colors to 256, then it
ask to press apply-ok- then it ask to re-start. But I want to make SURE before doing all that. Does anyone know anything about that? I'm new to all this. Microsoft told me the 98 is absolete, there's no tech support for it.
Someone please get back to me. Go to the Control Panel and select Display.

Then choose the Settings tab. Here you will be looking for a little section that says "Screen Area."

Change this to 800x600 pixels or your prefered choice. Don't worry if the monitor goes crazy if you select a resolution too high for your monitor, it will resort back in 15 seconds.

I'm slightly hazy on Windows98 but I don't think you have to RESTART to change the reolution... As for the 256colours section, this seems as if your graphics drivers have not been installed, unless its a very VERY old computer.

Solve : Mini-vacation.?

Answer»

I just thought I should let everyone know that in several hours (after getting some sleep), I will be on my way to Nevada because my girlfriend wants to see Pat Benatar and...well, you know how us guys always get dragged into these sorts of THINGS. Alright, so maybe I want to see Pat Benatar too, but it was her idea. Anyway, I'm going to be gone for the weekend, so if any of you feel a big depressing void in your chests, you'll know why. I hate having to neglect the Security section of the forum like this, but if I don't take this little mini-vacation, I'm going to snap. Thankfully, I've been getting a bit more help over there, so they should be ABLE to hold the fort for me until I come back. Have a good weekend, everyone. I'll be seeing you all again by Monday or Tuesday.BEWARE!!! Feeding the one armed bandits can be addictive. Enjoy your break Chris Quote

The virus help section is going to flood without CDMatt......Thanks for the well-wishes, everyone. I got back fairly early yesterday, but my girlfriend wanted to spend some more time together at her place, so I ended up staying there until I was on the verge of passing out. I had a good time...definitely something I needed. I've been wanting to get away for a long time, so this weekend was perfect for me. And the concert was actually pretty fun. I SURPRISED by how many songs I knew (there was only one I didn't recognize). But now I'm back and ready to get back into action. I thought I was going to go crazy when I checked the Spyware/Virus section, but Broni did a great job of keeping things under control while I was gone. This is very much appreciated.

I was actually surprised by how easy it can be to get addicted to giving your money away. Ha. I did really well, though. I mean, I didn't win any money...but I only lost about $25...and most of that belonged to my girlfriend. So, I'd say it went well. You know, as much as I wanted to hear that song (I loved it as a kid), I was convinced there was no way she would sing it. I mean, if I was Pat Benatar, I would probably refuse. But she sang it at the end of the set and it was pretty much awesome. It's surprising how much fun I had.

Solve : Astronomy?

Answer» For those interested..."Most Massive stars ever"

Oprah, Rosie O' Donnell, Roseanne... oh wait, the topic is Astronomy, nevermind.

regarding the link though, In a strange twist, I actually find it entirely un-amazing... even dissappointing, in some ways. I haven't been heavily into Astronomy since I started working with COMPUTERS (so I don't follow astronomical news like this) and the books I have are pretty ancient (let's just say they are the same age as a College book titled "applied Structured basic"... that is, late 70's or so)

Anyway, the book has a "artists rendering" of the size comparison between the sun and betelguese:

the picture is actually a two-page spread covering the lower half of both pages, but I sort of cut it out for size, which is actually the opposite of what I usually do with two-page SPREADS, which is to enlarge them.

Alright, so we have that... and now today they find the "most massive stars" and we get this picture:

One of those has got to be WRONG! I want to blame the fact that the Betelgeuse one was based on incorrect DATA (it being way older and all), but there is actually a thermal graphing of the star's surface, so I have no idea what to think here.

This is interesting. When I read it I found it hard to believe that the brightest star is 22 million times brighter than the Sun.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEheh1BH34Q&feature=relatedNice video. The second IMAGE is correct. This took me ages to get it sorted on my site and there is still a rogue image around that needs deleting... still looking for it.

The bus concept SEEMS like a very clever way of keeping bus traffic FLOWING on schedule regardless of what's going on with other traffic. I just wonder what could happen if a motorist driving through the bus suddenly decides to make a turn into another lane but mis-judges his timing and GETS in the way of the side of the bus. there is reference to that and they are WORKING on some sort of light set up to stop the cars going under it

One of the BEST opportunities for SKY WATCHING and time-lapse photography is right around the corner. The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks August 12-13 above North American SKIES, and forecasters are expecting a lively show - about 80 meteors per hour during peak display!

The Perseids appear to come from the constellation PERSEUS, but are actually bits of debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet, which has been orbiting the sun for centuries. The Earth passes through these streams of shooting stars every August.

That's true ALSO with ESSAYS. Who knows, MAYBE mine have been stolen!

Actually, in school I did as little as possible of my work on the computer. I mean, seriously- if there was an option to NOT do it on the computer, I didn't. This was mainly because I didn't have a computer at the time (GASP! unthinkable! a 16-year old without a computer and a cellphone and a MP3 player?) but also because everytime I did the teachers would accuse me of plagiarism. :/

I thought I did something wrong the first time when my teacher wanted me to stay after class to talk about mine, I thought I must have screwed up horribly. Imagine my surprise when I discovered I had done well enough for him to think I had copied it. I decided that I would try to do as many of the assignments for that English course using good old pen and paper. It's a lot harder to plagiarise that, Copy-Paste doesn't work so well there. I'm saddened to see that even standard printed writing has become something of a lost art AMONGST the younger generations.

My english teacher from last year MADE us write all projects by hand first, then edit it and re-write it on a computer. Luckily for me, I have an IEP (individual education plan), so I got to write the projects on my laptop and edit it on it too. Saved hours of work.

10-9-8-7...LET me point out... the website itself isn't breaking copyright laws, however it's linking to illegal music on torrents. The site itself also isn't malious but third party CONTENT is. However, wheither or not a website is legal doesn't make a difference, SURE there's a higher chance (and some are bait sites), but very popular websites also get attacked and injected by hackers, drive-by website linking or advertising, etc. There's thousands of legal sites all using Clicksor for that matter.

Not all mp3s are illegal, there's a LOT of free sites, albums, bands, backing tracks and mixers out there who will give out free music - guitar website's are full of these for example.

You might as well tell someone to stop using the internet, just cause you might be infected next time you check your Facebook page (over 2 million was infected by that on HACKED occasion). Billions of people have been affected by legal sites (the more the traffic, the more it's a target).

This is why you should have security in place (no matter what you use it for). This might be a little bit off topic, but I don't think it's totally off topic.

Over the years I've bought a lot of songs from Amazon, usually for $.99. Last night I bought a couple of songs and was surprised how much free music they are offering now. Maybe it's been there for a while and I just haven't noticed it. But if you are looking for free music, it's a trusted site.

true.. didn't think about that

I was actually referring to 50s and 60s. I had three different Chevy Sprints now that I think about it, in '91 I had a gold-colored one. Then in '96 - 98 I had a RED and blue one. They all had a ton of millage on them when I GOT them, so that combined with not knowing how to take care of cars at the time, they didn't LAST too long. But in all cases they had decent little radios in them..

anyway "Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light!" My brother-in-law's musical taste is mostly 80's stuff. He can go into a thrift shop and buy stacks of CD's for $1 apiece. Then he rips them and then donates them back to the thrift store. He's built up about 8GB of music (all legal) for very little money.AAAHhh the 60's...

DOWNLOADING OR SHARING COPYRIGHTED CONTENT WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION IS ILLEGAL.

Yep. It is against the law.About time.wait.... wut? copying copyrighted software that you didn't pay for is illegal? when did this happen!?!the original counter-argument was that the program itself didn't do ANYTHING illegal, it was just used for illegal purposes. And in that sense they had a good point; Weapon manufacturers aren't held responsible for what the owners of their products do. On the other hand, there are people that think they should. So it's not really that much different.

LimeWire, to my understanding, and much like the other crappy P2P programs, really just LET you share files. There is absolutely nothing wrong with sharing files, no matter what anybody says; the catch point is of course when said files are, say ISO's of popular games or MP3's and so forth, which fall under copyright claims. Although Limewire was used ALMOST exclusively for this purpose, it won't change anything. If you take the gun away from a criminal, they will just go find another one. There are still countless other options for P2P aside from Limewire. Torrents, for example, which have a large base of perfectly legal uses. (Linux distros are often distributed through torrents; as are all the videos that you can get from TASVideos.org; and any number of other uses where large file downloads are needed. Quote

Solve : early stages of repair business?

Answer»

I'm in the early stages of starting a relatively small computer repair business, servicing laptops and desktops. Just a few months away pretty much..

My question is regarding customers who take their computers home after repairing them, and they install malware onto their computers through pirating or just being careless.

How COULD I tell if the problem is RELATED to something I missed, or some malware they installed ?

I guess if they brought the computer back to me I could check the "installed programs" inventory to see what they have installed since they took the computer, and deny or offer to re-service their computer, based on that.. But are there any other suggestions ? Not all malware shows up as something that has been installed, does it ?

edit: I guess I could run some virus scans and if their is infection, then deny service. I'd still like to hear some other point of views.. I guess I could keep some logs of what is on the computer, without being too intrusive of course..I don't understand? You want to check if there is a problem with the computer and tell them you won't fix it if you do? I fail to see how "well, I looked at your computer, and it's not working 100% so I can't fix it" will bring about many business opportunities...

Quote

Obviously in a computer repair shop, once a computer is repaired by hardware then the answer here will not be related to the issue so this has to be DISCARDED. On the software side of the issue, assuming you made a clean install, repaired or fixed the computer. I would also make a system restore or make a registry back-up in case the computer is healthy before it is place out for the customer to use again. Set out cut-off dates for any warranty period.Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 03, 2010, 12:42:34 AM

Video: Amazing Video Of Workers Scaling Huge Tower
The six-minute FILM, shot using a helmet camera, follows the progress of two engineers as they scale a 1,768ft pylon.

The video, filmed in the US, had more than 900,000 hits on YouTube.

The progress of the pair is understandably slow, with much of the ascent done without the benefit of a safety harness, as it would impede the climb.

And their work is made more difficult as they have to carry all their tools, weighing up to 30lbs.

The video was originally posted on the industry website www.TheOnlineEngineer.org, before finding its way to YouTube.

It has since been removed following a copyright claim but Sky News Online has permission to show it.

In case anyone is in doubt about the height to which the workers climb, the top of the antenna shown in the film is higher than Chicago's Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower), the tallest skyscraper in the US.
Incredible.I've never been anywhere near that high on a tower, but I have done a little tower work.

Once I was at 265' on a 300' tower setting up a microwave dish. We were waiting on people on the other end to do their thing, and just kind of leaning back and enjoying the scenery, when two jet fighters flew by about 25' from the tower and 25' below us. I could see the gauges in the cockpit.

That was scary.

your point was it didn't work with Sqrt(-1). I told you why that was the case. I fail to see the point I missed. Quote from: Fleexy on August 29, 2010, 05:17:49 PM

You failed to realize that Microsoft did not fail. They failed to tell you they purposely didn't fail.

square root of -1 legally failed on the calculator like all calculators with square root function would. It doesn't work in 7 but it works in some older windows versions:

put in 7/(4+3=

That is- use = bewfore you close the parentheses.

Occasionally this causes calc to crash. Not necessarily a terrible issue since it's just a pebkac issue MS didn't think to address. Also it doesn't happen in windows 7 or in most 64-bit versions of windows.Michael, you almost got me!

Don't play with me.
I know from my SOURCES, that you're getting new gift certificates all the time Hi Broni, better LATE than never, I hope. I was so busy having you HELP me around the time (or just subsequent) to your birthday that I didn't get to WISH you a Happy Birthday. Anyway, here it is. It's the very least that I can do after all the help that you provided. By the WAY thanks to you, my PC is now running great. Once again, Thank You. overthehillThank you

Solve : BASeBlock?

Answer»

My latest work! An early Alpha version I'm currently working on:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3LUdIGjuXc

as I note in the description, I was going to call it"Poing 2" but have decided that it will be BASeBlock, or something else, since "Poing" is already the name of a different game (I didn't know it at the time I made the first one). I particularly like the particle effects and the rising scores, which will almost certainly get a lot of tweaking over time.

Biggest hurdle so far will be trying to give it a Level Editor, as well as being able to serialize Level Data. And make some original Music that doesn't blow goats. (I tried my hand at FL studio to make a quick little RIFF, so that I wouldn't have any copyright music or something and have the audio STRIPPED out).

Also, having that little bit of debugging INFO at the bottom left gave me the idea to simply create a screen layout on the picturebox itself for things like score and extra balls, rather then use a separate frame/groupbox for that purpose.

very good well done , i used to play a game like that years ago Quote from: harry 48 on September 24, 2010, 12:09:53 PM

yep, it's Yet Another Arkanoid Clone (hmm, perhaps that will be the name... )

Still a lot of work to be done on it, most of it is of the "less fun" type, (GETTING it to save and load properly from files); mostly I've been messing around with adding particle effects all over (the blocks, when hit, for example, spawn a number of particles, you can see this in the video- also, when the ball hits the paddle a few particles are spawned... and of course the bomb and ray blocks shoot out additional balls which spawn a bunch of particles as well (that's going to need some tweaking as well).

I'm dread to try this on my laptop, because I feel certain it will run slowly... I hope I am instead pleasantly SURPRISED i'll try and find it and you can maybe add a few things from it
