Solve : "Neanderthals were keen on innovation and technology "?

Answer»

I am interested in technology but will LEAVE others to comment on the link below!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11408298I don't know about that article, but my neanderthal boss just got a Blackberry.Quote from: quaxo on September 25, 2010, 08:41:59 AM

I don't know about that article, but my neanderthal boss just got a Blackberry.

Really? Most of them use iPhones, from what I understand.

That reminds me of this time I went into an apple store (it wasn't voluntary, I was with SOMEBODY and they insisted) Of course the salespeople are all perky and happy, PEOPLE say it's because they find working with apple products so fun and rewarding, I say it's because they are all on drugs. Anyways, of course the PERSON I was with wanted to check out the new iPhone (this was some time ago) so he's talking about the features, and he says "and no matter what you want, if you can think of it, there's an app for it".

I of course said "Time Travel"? Being that that would be a particularly cool App, and being Apple clearly the laws of quantum mechanics are no barrier to their absolute coolness.

I was met with dismay when, contrary to what he had said immediately before, there was in fact no app for time travel.

Actually, the Neanderthal did ask me to get him an iPhone while I was in the US EARLIER this month, then his friend gave him his Blackberry for free because his friend wanted to change to an iPhone. Work at the office has since ground to a halt, and the Neanderthal hasn't put the thing down since he got it...

Solve : Iran's Nuclear Chiefs Battle Cyber Attack?

Answer»

Iran's nuclear agency is battling to contain a computer worm that experts say was probably designed by a hostile government and has the capacity to shut down industrial plants.

Iran has confirmed that 30,000 computers in the country's power stations, including the nuclear reactor in Bushehr, have been attacked by the Stuxnet worm.

It said experts from the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran met last week to discuss how to deal with the INFECTION.

"An electronic war has been launched against Iran," said Mahmoud Liaii, director of the country's Information Technology Council.

"This computer worm is designed to transfer data about production lines from our industrial plants to (locations) outside of the country."

Iranian media reported there had been no significant damage.

The Stuxnet worm is described by experts as the most complex piece of malware ever designed.

Once it gains access to a PLANT's computers, it hunts out specific software that controls operations such as the opening and closing of valves or temperature regulation.

By halting those processes it can cause extensive damage to nuclear power stations, power grids or other industrial facilities.

Alan Bentley, senior vice president of IT security company Lumension, told Sky News Online: "The worrying thing about Stuxnet is that mischief or financial reward wasn't its purpose, it was aimed right at the heart of a critical INFRASTRUCTURE.

"Stuxnet isn't just ANOTHER piece of malware. It is the most refined piece of malware ever discovered."

The worm was discovered in July and attacks were reported primarily in Iran but other countries such as Pakistan and Indonesia have been affected.

The high the number of infections in Iran have led some to conclude that the worm may have been designed in the US or Israel to disable Iran's controversial nuclear facilities.

Technology security provider Symantec told the Financial Times it would have taken a team of 10 specialised programmers about six MONTHS of full-time work to design Stuxnet.

"Government organisations across the world need to think carefully about how they are protecting their power stations, water plants and industrial units, from malicious attack," Mr Bentley added.
I've heard about this on the news although Iran is claiming that it never did anything and I've saw early reports that it was a US attack, although apparently that was a hoax.

Solve : NEw Forum Layout Help??

Answer»

Everytime I MAKE a code i cant get it working!!!
When you edit the profile its this part

Computer:
List your computer specs here to show in your profile and in each of your topics. If you have a custom computer make sure to check the SBCC box in your profile. BBC code is supported here.

Ive done it with every code i can THINK of...any help? What code? You don't need to use "code" to enter your computer specs in the box for specs in your Profile. Just type in the info.I don't think BBC code is working there anyway, it's not working for signatures.

OTOH it's rather pointless for the specs box anyway.

P.S the layout hasn't changed,(Except for a few links and stuff in weird places, I'm looking at you "Insert QUOTE") the forum software was upgraded. (and so some of Nathans custom additions probably got reset to defaults). So there will be a period where he needs to adjust things Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 28, 2010, 01:24:41 PM

What about the post count and the Ranking bar?

I Should be intermediate not begginer...right?You are what you are.I've updated your profile johngetter, maybe your specs will look better, basically just added bold tags and also removed all the extra spacing. ONE thing to keep in mind is that there is a 800 character limit, so you're not going to be able to paste every small detail, just post the important stuff like your RAM, CPU, HDD, and Monitor. Also each of those extra spaces you had, count as a character, which is why it's good to not have multiple spaces.

The post count ranking bar is based off a set rule of how many posts you have. See this post for a LISTING of each of the rankings as well as how many posts it takes to get to each rankings.

As far as the signature, like BC mentioned there were some issues with the BBC code not working properly however those have been fixed. I believe the issue you're encountering is that you're out of characters. It should say under the box "Max characters: 400; characters remaining: 0". I've increased this to 500. But don't think anything above 500 should be necessary, but should help you get your last image in.

Solve : Who Said the Parallel Port Was Dead??

Answer»

Was sent this in e-mail and thought it was pretty interesting. Have a hard time believing that this actually would work, will have to dig up some connectors to see if this is really possible. In any case, it's amusing.

http://gizmodo.com/5610087

Lol

atta way to get the most out of your computer That wouldn't work. I don't know about the others but I do know that a PS/2->USB keyboard adapter only works with either keyboard HID USB devices or Mouse HID USB devices. Usually, they work with either ONE or the other, sometimes both keyboards and MICE, but using it for any other USB device and expecting it to work is completely ludicrous. How would the converter translate, the operation of a Mass storage device so that it works through the same interface that a keyboard and mouse use, neither if which have much more then a few kilobits of data transfer (they both use the very slowest USB mode, which utilizes a subchannel of the very slowest 1.5mbps speed, and even then it get's translated to the far slower (a few kilobits, maybe) PS/2). One can assume that the PS/2 adapter would be specifically designed to translate the instructions being set from the PS/2 (stuff like wether caps lock is on and so forth... at least for keyboards. I don't think Mice even accept anything in response from the PC) to HID instructions for the USB device in question, and Vice versa. Also, notice that despite the fact that the PS/2 to USB converter always bears a small USB symbol toward the USB side on the top and a small symbol sometimes) that is either a mouse or keyboard on the PS/2 side I find it curious how this one bears neither. (it's not on "the other side" side that would be the bottom and they never put it there.

Let's go through each little device, shall we?

First, we have the parallel port itself. connected to this is a white block that Must be a Parallel DB-25 to Serial DB-25. I say this because there is no Parallel DB-25 to Serial DB-9 and also because otherwise the white thing is just a parallel port extension, which is rather pointless.

Connected to this we have the Serial DB-25 to Serial DB9, and then what appears to be a PS/2 to Serial DB9, and the final PS/2 to USB.

As well as what I noted about the PS/2 to USB device itself, it's important to know that in a similar vein the PS/2 to Serial devices only work properly with Mice. First off, it only even works properly with mice that are designed to use it. (that is, the mouse actually has to change what it outputs dependent on wether it is connected to PS/2 or Serial.

This sort of use would never work, especially because USB plug and play doesn't work through ANY of the adapters.

I think everybody knew it wouldn't work. It's hard enough to get one converter, or adapter to work right, much less six in a daisy chain.I like the first comment. In essence, "why not just use an available usb port "

lolAside from compatibility and whatnot, this wouldn't work SIMPLY because USB requires output power that the parallel port doesn't provide. Granted, this can be changed with a bit of know-how, but I'm guessing that most likely isn't the case here. Funny picture, though.Quote from: CBMatt on August 23, 2010, 01:00:22 AM

Aside from compatibility and whatnot, this wouldn't work simply because USB requires output power that the parallel port doesn't provide. Granted, this can be changed with a bit of know-how, but I'm guessing that most likely isn't the case here. Funny picture, though.

According to this post http://computer.howstuffworks.com/parallel-port1.htm

The parallel port can supply 5V...but only from 1 pin, and I wouldn't count on it, as it drops to 0.5V when data is being sent.

Quote
Pin but drops below 0.5 volts whenever the computer sends a byte of data. This drop in voltage tells the printer that data is being sent. 1 CARRIES the strobe signal. It maintains a level of between 2.8 and 5 volts,
That 5 volts is a no-load figure. In ordinary parallel port implementations the data outputs are 74LS374 IC totem-pole TTL outputs which can source 2.6 mA and sink 24 mA. The outputs are designed so that they give at least 2.4V at 2.6 mA load. If you set the outputs to the high state and don't load the outputs, you get almost full +5V output. If you start to take current out of the port, the voltage will drop. The voltage is guaranteed to to stay above 2.4V when you load the output as specified. If you try to pull more current from the port, the output voltage will drop and the parallel port electronics will start to heat up more than they are specified.
It only works if you believe. I clapped my hands in belief and I couldn't daisy chain to unlimited lengths. I saw this on another computer forum. I think they were the actual ones to do it too lol.

Solve : What are the laws about selling concert tickets online??

Answer»

Just questioning if eBay enables you to sell concert tickets online? Do you know if you can FIND any restrictions depending on what country you're in?

My parents have just called me and asked if i could "get rid" of their two tickets to some concert as they wont be ABLE to make it because of another family event.

Apart from asking friends etc, i thought ebay would be a great place to market them.

But whats ebay's policy on marketing tickets? Ive heard alot about it within the news but ive forgotten what happened.

and if it matters, the concert is inside this coming month

Thanks in advance for your advice.I'm not SURE about the policies on ebay or craigslist, but in general selling tickets is OK if they are not sold for more than the face value of the ticket. Selling tickets for more than the face value is considered scalping and is generally illegal in many cities, and I have seen it enforced in a few cities.Weakest SPAM attempt of the Month Award...i'll leave it up to a vote.I don't know...
They were pretty clever in disguising it as a real question. This is definitely what you'd call a "soft sell" spam post. It's much more subtle than those, "Buy cheap *censored* online!" posts with a million links in them. So, I don't know if I'd call it the weakest. Its strength lies in its restraint. That's just my opinion, though. I'm sure others will differ.

Solve : spectrum 48k?

Answer»

do you have or did you EVER have or did you play on a zx spectrum 48 K computer

i got one for my son a long time ago and also about 40 games , we still have it but have not used it for yearsTo tell you the truth, I've never even heard of one until now, and I thought I knew about most of the early computers. It sounds like it was more of a UK product.

Interesting article about it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZX_Spectrumwe all learn something new every day

it was a British invention by sir Clive Sinclair as your link says and it lead to all the copies world wide of the gaming computers they updated to the 64k but i never knew they were still making games for it

we bought the weekly input mag; for it and you could learn how to write simple games which i did and also learn how to write binary code but that was very HARD i gave up on that

sir clive also invented an electric one seater covered in bicycle but it never caught on

http://www.visionnet.nl/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=20:sinclair-zx-spectum&catid=3:homecomputers-8bits&Itemid=10The U.S/North American version of the ZX Spectrum is the Timex/Sinclair 2068.

And in case you are wondering I didn't have to look that up on wikipedia, because I just read about it no less then 30 minutes ago here. (in a comment).

Of course I had heard about the spectrum long before that, just had no idea it was a region-exclusive product (excepting it's exact duplicate with a different name, of course)

yes it was regional , as i said it was made in BRITAIN and really took of and then spread and i see the Timex has the inventors name as well

it would surprise you how many people never heard of it , i must check and see if ours is still working

Not to drown out your attempt at random humour but your being TOO random. When you pass the fine LINE of randomness, it just becomes stupid. what your should aim for, is to balance on that line of random ness- make it random, but there has to be some continuity.

As an example:

I just bought a copy of PC explorer. I've always wanted to explore the wilderness in a politically correct way. I never was sure how to do that.

It included a few possum skin boots, as well.

See: random, but not TOO random, tries to stay in league with the original topic; that is, PC Explorer; as I'm sure your aware, randomness can me applied wittily, but wit cannot be applied randomly, if that makes any sense.

Or maybe it can, just in a more general sense. That made me LAUGH.

But: the point was and every joke is destroyed when you have to explain.
It's a PC mag so it's geeky, it's hardly playboy. That was the irony of the.... oh forget it!

BC come on then some tips on random funny posts? Not including possums!HEH, I didn't even know it was a magazine; now I GET it.

Solve : Property Management Company Sues Tenant Over Single Tweet on Twitter?

Answer»

This is unbelievable!!

http://www.theinternetpatrol.com/property-management-company-sues-tenant-over-single-tweet-on-twitter/?awt_l=MvOQK&awt_m=1ZeB.jiIfsK295

Amanda Bonnen - the woman formerly known as abonnen on Twitter - was apparently unhappy with the mold growing in the apartment which she rented from property management company Horizon Group Management LLC. Earlier this year she said as much on Twitter, tweeting a Tweet (a Twitter message) in which she said "Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it's okay."

Whether or not Horizon thinks that a moldy apartment is ok, they clearly think that talking about their moldy apartments isn't - this week Horizon slapped Amanda Bonnen with a lawsuit in which they ask for $50,000 in damages for that single Tweet.

"Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it's ok."
And as if the moldy apartments, and the ridiculous lawsuit weren't bad enough - and don't make Horizon look bad enough - Horizon's Jeffrey Michael, part of the family that has been at Horizon's helm for more than two decades, explains that they not only never asked Bonnen about the statement, or to remove it, but that "We're a sue first, ask questions later kind of an organization."

Classy.

Fortunately for Bonnen, Michael may be a "sue first" kinda guy, but he clearly isn't a "sue well" or even an "engage an excellent lawyer" kind of guy. In fact, the lawsuit reads like something that someone (with a larger ego than intellect) representing themselves would have written. We were honestly shocked to see a lawyer's name attached to the pleadings.

"On or about 9:08 am on May 12, 2009, in Chicago, Illinois, Defendant maliciously and wrongfully composed and wrote a certain Tweet," the complaint in the lawsuit, well, complains. "The Tweet contained false and defamatory matter concerning Plaintiff, namely: "…Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it's ok."

Then the complaint goes on to whine that "Defendant then and there maliciously and wrongfully published the false and defamatory Tweet on Twitter, THEREBY allowing the Tweet to be distributed throughout the world."

It is on this that they base their claim for damages of $50,000.

All the more ludicrious when you consider that Ms. Bonnen had a grand total of… wait for it .. 20 followers on Twitter.

Even if her followers were evenly distributed across all seven continents, one could hardly describe that as a "Tweet distributed throughout the world."

Or capable of doing $50,000 in damages.

Even IF what Ms. Bonnen said weren't true.

Because, of course, the truth is a defense to a charge of DEFAMATION.

(Nonetheless, Ms. Bonnen has SINCE closed down her Twitter account, more's the pity.)

And judging by the many, many comments that the story is garnering since it first broke on the Chicago Sun-Times website - some from other former Horizon tenants - the odds are quite good that Ms. Bonnen was being entirely truthful about the mold.

All that said, it is still an object lesson for the rest of us. And that lesson is, "think twice, Tweet once."I doubt they have a snowball's chance in *censored* of winning this lawsuit...I think they should COUNTERSUE! Having to live in a place like that, with mold and potentially more issues should be worth at least a reasonable sum of money. I remember one case here in CA, when some slumlord was actually sentenced to live in his slums for a few months, just to let him see how it feels.Quote

We were honestly shocked to see a lawyer's name attached to the pleadings.

Why? They've probably got a firm on retainer, if they're "sue first." Too much of the legal system isn't about justice -- it's about billable hours.or was it like when some lady got fired from a job because she was facebooking when she was sick and was on sick leave for the day?Wow. Those people are idiots! They are a sue first type of organization Quote from: Broni on August 02, 2009, 10:26:54 AM

MAC OSX 10.3
MAC OSX 10.4
MAC OSX 10.5
MAC OSX 10.6 (comes out in Sept.)

An ultimate edition that only left-clicks? Seems a bit lacking in features.

Yes I really need to get over the single-button nature of it's mouse.

But seriously... One button... what kind of insipid pseudosoph's can even contend that a single button is better then two?

And, at least the last time I checked, they sold a 2-button mouse as a "professional" product. Because we all know, it takes at least a bachelors in an art program or a masters to comprehend the complicated mechanics involved in using two active digits. And let's not get started keeping the two apart! How do you know when to right click, when to left click! It's all so confusing!

APPLE should have just used a GIANT TOUCHPAD on the wall, that way their users can just throw feces at it. I mean, really, if a second mouse button is "beyond" the basic grasp of the people ironically deemed professionals (if only because they paid a "professional" price), how can we even be sure they understand one button, or even that the mouses movements horizontally dictate the cursors movement along a vertical plane. It makes no sense! heck, while we're at it remove a dimension of movement, because if translating the movements from a horizontal plane to a vertical one is a difficult concept, it's only safe to assume that two dimensions are one too many for a "perfect" OS that apple claims.

Which brings me to another point- if OSX is so "perfect" why do they need to keep releasing a new version? Do the specifications for perfection keep changing, or an I missing some intrinsic rule of a "perfect OS": We never have bugs. WE're not fixing things. we're just trying to run out of names of large cats to name our OS so we can finally name it "Mac OS Badger". Tom in marketing is pressing us for this. We're working towards a utopian set of Operating Systems.

It'll be great! There will be Mac OS Toad, Mac OS Mole, Mac OS Water Rat.... Part of the Wind in the Willows suite.

OK I'm done. I got nothin'. there will never be a perfect os, when you come to realize that it will make sense.Quote from: squall_01 on July 13, 2009, 04:39:42 AM

Then companies should stop advertising as such. I have a Gillette razor which was perfect 4yrs ago and they added an extra blade YEAR by year which became the 'best blade ever' it's all a marketing strategy to the forgetful and naive.

For its fiscal year 2008, Microsoft (MSFT) earned net income of $17,681,000,000 on $60,420,000,000 of total revenue. Since net profit margin is a ratio, we don’t have to worry about the last 6 zeros, so we find that:

Correct, that is medium format. I like the Hasselblad 500 and 550, but this is the one I own, I just got it actually, I'm still learning my way around it. It's my choice as a field camera.

Large format is pretty much anything with a bellows in between the lens and the film PLANE. OMG thats an expensive camera! Why do you need it? I really need to learn more about cameras. I got a picture of about every firework todayI don't need it, all that I really need is a Hasselblad 500 digital, but I like the work that it does. That makes it a luxury, but one that I make use of. Most amateur photographers can do beautiful work with a camera that COSTS less than $1000.00.Very cool. Reminds me of another page I recently stumbled across of some extremely cool HDR photos. Also worth checking out.

(I actually had to think about that. I try to avoid thinking, you know. It's USUALLY like this: Sometimes, it's like this: Some posts make me do this: )I have a shotgun...NOT USB powered!

Alan <>< I think it would be cool to plug it in to a Mac or Vista and slice it up!Quote from: ThomasTheXPUser on July 15, 2009, 07:25:45 PM

There's a SP2 now. I wasn't laughing till I got to read the saw... iSaw... lawl... Man, that's hilarious... Real good for running off the guy who keeps borrowing crap and NEVER returning it, just get a UH, 50ft cord or so. You can no longer hide behind the wall of your cubical, for I shall cut through it then smite you with my budget battle axe and chain mail!Hold still! It'll take a few hours for this cheap plastic toy machete to break your skin... Actually, when I said battle axe I was thinking something like thisI hate those crappy treehuggers. A USB CHAINSAW WOULD BE COOL!!Quote

So, you would have us squander, and not manage our resources?Quote from: AEGIS on July 19, 2009, 04:56:53 PM

If we're going to conserve something... it should be non-renewable resources, like petroleum. And yet, even though we only have a very limited supply, we still have people driving around in SUVs. We will need alternative sources of propulsion but it seems to have been put on the back burner by almost all the countries involved.

Trees grow back. As long as the timber companies are responsible, and ensure that the areas they clear are still habitable to new growth, the new growth is inevitable. Although it helps when some of them plant new seedlings to replace those they clearcut, which many do.

The problem I have with "tree-huggers" is that not only do they treat the trees as if they were self-aware, concious, and animate, but also that they paint the timber companies as evil comglomerates that have no regard for the environment. Wood is needed because it's in demand. How many trees had to be cut down just for the doobies the worlds hippies smoke?

And we still need houses. What are we supposed to build them out of? Aluminum? Well, then we need a lot of electricity to separate it from it's ore.

Different plant source.

Your point is well taken. There is extremism on both sides of the proverbial fence. It seems though, if companies would better regulate themselves, then the government or the huggers wouldn't have to chase them...and if the government better regulated itself. (Title to a new work of fiction, maybe?)true. It's fairly well regulated here, the entire province of British Columbia is literally covered in trees. A lot of it is protected, and even the parts owned by the timber companies are heavily forested (although for some reason lately they have cut their land off to hikers...). I think it's a regulation that the companies must be responsible and make sure that the areas they cut can regrow, but it might just be the companies perogative.

Also, I must at least contend that hippies don't often use toilet paper or shower, so their... err... carbon footprint is reduced.

Now their olfactory footprint, on the other hand... I just remember that part of the reason we've had such devastating wildfires in the States these last ten years or so, is that we've overprotected, and haven't allowed nature to takes its course. She's corrected things in quite a few places.
