Solve : Why are you here?? |
|
Answer» And what do you think you are doing?Quote from: mr-bisquit on April 16, 2010, 12:33:44 PM And what do you think you are doing? what are you doing? and why are you asking this? No wait ! This IS a good topic.. My goal at CH is to see what I can do to get mr. bisquit as confused and annoyed as possible. Why else would I possibly want to be a MEMBER of a place, such as CH ? ? Quote from: EEVIAC on April 16, 2010, 09:32:50 PM No wait ! This IS a good topic.. OK, seriously, *censored* is with the attitudes here? somebody likes BSD and not windows so suddenly he's our enemy? He knows more about things we are unfamiliar with so we have to annoy and confuse him at every chance? I mean, sure, I did that, at first, but he made several interesting points, and there is absolutely no denying that having him as a visitor can provide great gains to this forum, especially with regard to Linux/FreeBSD and other systems. I can use Linux, and FreeBSD, but I can guarantee that mr.bisquit can use them better. Many people on this forum know this- they know that they could never figure out qemu, or various other tools of that sort, without assistance. And that makes them feel vulnerable. and when they feel vulnerable, they get defensive. Let's not forget the completely unrelated random comments like "I use a freeBSD disc as a coaster" how is that helpful? Is this anyway to treat an obvious credit to the forum if he decides to offer his assistance? No. it's one thing to disagree with somebody but it's quite another to disagree with their opinion simply because it is their opinion. It's high time we realize that just because the Windows Operating system holds the most marketing share that neither means it is the best nor does it mean that everybody seeking help here will be using it. And if the entire purpose of this forum is to provide assistance it seems only logical that having somebody that can help provide assistance that most other cannot is a huge asset. I may not agree with mr.bisquit on everything, but I know enough not to let those disagreements fuel ridiculous posts like those made by Quantos and several other members, including myself(at first), and although I doubt mr.bisquit was at all affected by it (he has nerves of steel, which I think may contribute to why everybody seems so intent on "making him as confused and annoyed" as possible) I do apologize for those. What does my post have to do with operating system preference ? You are allowed smart a** remarks sometimes and no one else is ? ? common ! Quote from: EEVIAC on April 16, 2010, 09:59:39 PM What does my post have to do with operating system preference ? I wasn't addressing you DIRECTLY. I just happened to use your post as a sample of a larger set of similar themed posts- including the ones I made.hmm, ok sure you were This topic is instigative, IMOI like the forum here somewhat. It's probably the first Windows-centric forum I have found which isn't full of snobs and dolts. Solve : Facistic system?? |
|
Answer» So, I live in Belgium. Yep. Erm Allan? You can say it in pm if you want.Heh, I think for your sake, no. Treval, What happens if you put all the kids in the same grade in the same class room and expect to teach them all the exact same way??? Let me tell you what happens The kids that learn faster get bored and are not challenged because the teacher has to go slower for the other kids. Therefore they don't reach their full potential. The kids that learn at a normal rate are ok because the teacher is teaching more on their level as most students fit into this category. The kids that take longer to learn are still getting left BEHIND and aren't learning what they need to because the teachers don't have time to give them the extra attention they need. While splitting these kids up isn't always an ideal solution and you can't possibly have a special kind of class for each kind of student most school systems tend to try and work it out the best they can. You will still have some students in each group that is struggling. I still think that one shouldn't forbid to go back to a higher level once in the lower level. 'Allan; kpac are now ignored'Why on earth would I be PMing you anyway?Quote from: mroilfield on April 17, 2010, 03:29:33 AM The kids that learn faster get bored and are not challenged because the teacher has to go slower for the other kids. Solve : problem with our public digital TV? |
|
Answer» We have a CRT television and we have a digital - analogue converter box. Anyone living in the US knows by now, about the the recent switch-over from analogue broadcasting to digital broadcasting, by television networks. maybe the converter needs a firmware update Maybe, but most of the over the air digital to analog converters I've seen don't look like they were meant for upgrading. You just need to check with the manufacture.actually, it was just a joke... Maybe they do have firmware... I don't know Wouldn't hurt in checking into I guess..Quote from: EEVIAC on April 18, 2010, 12:59:12 AM actually, it was just a joke... Maybe they do have firmware... I don't know Here in the UK (Great Britain) the switchover is happening in stages; my area switched over 2 weeks ago. The boxes do have firmware, and the firmware gets updated "over the air". When an update is available for a particular model of box, an update signal is included in the transmitted data stream. Once the box has received, verified and stored the update code, it will reboot the next time it is in standby mode at 3 AM. Alternatively the update procedure can be triggered manually from the box's setup menu. I very much doubt that US boxes are very different in this regard. Two things that became widely known the day after analog was switched off: (1) There are some older boxes around that have obsolete firmware and cannot be updated. This came out when UK digital TV went over to a mode called "Split NIT". The NIT or Network Information Table was split in the original specification but not implemented by some converter box companies. These assumed a single NIT would always be used and owners of these boxes lost channels permanently as the system went over to DUAL NITs. (2) People who had been getting OK analog reception with indoor antennas were now getting zilch. The fact that power cycling the box restores proper working makes me wonder if a firmware upgrade has not completed properly. I suggest searching the setup options for manual upgrade and carrying it out. However: these boxes are so cheap that it may be worth getting a new one. Many people have done this here where the cheapest box I have seen cost 15 UK pounds (23 US dollars). Another thing: find out the maker and model number and do a Google search for discussion forums to see if anybody else is having this problem, although personally I think it is screwed. thx for that, Trout |

Solve : bad car and bike crash? |
|
Answer» Do you see the motorcycle
The pictures are authentic. The pictures have not been altered. Three people are deadQuote from: marvinengland on May 03, 2010, 04:26:32 PM Three people are dead thought he said they lived- that wouldn't make sense. Also, the mention of essentially "forward this to everybody" made it seem like a chain letter.Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 03, 2010, 04:30:00 PM thought he said they lived- that wouldn't make sense. forward to everyone to show them what talking on a mobile phone while driving brings about This graphic demonstration was placed at the Motorcycle Fair by the Police and Road Safety Department. the above should prove to you that the photos are real I agree nobody should ever text while driving. Talking on a cell phone is a little different. I've worked for several companies that have replaced mobile radios with cell phones and have not seen accidents increase. It's all about paying more attention to driving than talking. Sometimes in heavy traffic you just don't answer the phone. Sometimes you need to pull over to the side of the road to talk. The fact that the guy on the bike was doing 85 mph in an area where there were side streets makes him as much, or even more, at fault than the woman on the cell phone. BTW, I've had more than half a dozen bikes. When you are on a bike you just have to assume that all the other drivers are idiots and don't see you. I do support banning any one under 18, or maybe even 21, from talking while driving. At that age you are still learning to drive and don't need the added distraction of a cell phone.So.. if the woman wasn't on the phone at the time (which was three years ago when this happend)- The motorcycle rider was still going way over the speed limit. Besides, what if she was a smoker? you know as well as I do if that was the case they WOULD have ruled the cause of death to be from smoking. I love how we're blaming the person on the cellphone when it was the motorcycle rider who just got their license and was going over the speed limit. "it's alright to blast down roads at 85 miles per hour, just don't use a cellphone while you do it" This is WHY there is a speed limit. if the motorcycle rider was going the speed limit, he would have been able to avoid the VW. additionally, again- what would have happened if the woman wasn't on the cellphone? would she have had supernatural perceptive powers and been able to predict that somebody would be going three times the speed limit and she should wait? I can see the newspapers headlines: "drunk driver collides with parked car. Woman found on cellphone with a cigarette inside facing charges for killing the man with her second hand smoke" Quote "drunk driver collides with parked car. Woman found on cellphone with a cigarette inside facing charges for killing the man with her second hand smoke" Pretty much SAYS it all...If you pull out of the side street, you're not going to see the motorcycle. By the time you do, phone or no phone, it'll be too late to do anything.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on May 03, 2010, 10:56:25 PM If you pull out of the side street, you're not going to see the motorcycle. By the time you do, phone or no phone, it'll be too late to do anything. agreed |

Answer» People, don't use servise Link Removed in Aurope and russia! Where the heck is Aurope? It's across the Utlantic Ocean from North Emerica, I think. Actually, what the OP describes is a well known scam, which has been operated in my country, (Great Britain) as well. It depends on the fact that third party suppliers can sell services to cell phone users and get payment via the user's account. What happens is this: 1. The victim typically Googles for "send sms via internet" or "download free ringtone" 2. One of the hits includes something like "Send SMS to any cell phone FREE!!!" or "Free ringtone!!!" 3. The victim clicks the link. 4. The victim sees an inviting web page with easy-to-follow links to send an SMS, choose a ringtone, etc. 5. The victim fills in their own cell number, SENDS the message or gets the "free" ringtone or game or whatever 8. (Better) If the victim is using pay-as-you-GO (prepay) they find fairly soon their airtime credit has decreased dramatically. 9. (Worse) If the victim is on a billed plan they find out at bill time that charges have been applied to their account. 10. They go back to the website and read the (well hidden) conditions and see that by clicking "OK" they have actually signed up to a "service" involving "useful" software, services, ring tones etc, at so much a month, first payment deductible immediately. The "free" stuff comes with the paid for service. They also see that to cancel they have to call a premium-rate number which turns out to play them a WHOLE bunch of recorded messages before they get to cancel. Alternatively they call their cell service provider who cancels the service, but will not refund the charges. In my country we have a Telecommunications Regulator and they can take down service providers who trap people unfairly but it takes time and they often just re-register under a new name. |

The icecap of the glacier covers a volcano with a summit elevation of 1,666metres (5,466ft). The volcano has erupted relatively FREQUENTLY since the last glacial period, most recently from 1821 to 1823 and again in 2010.[2][3][4] Now...the real trouble is how to pronounce ˈɛɪjaˌfjatlaˌjœːkʏtl̥. Solve : Scary License Plate? |

Answer» Quote from: patio on MAY 16, 2010, 03:47:26 PM How do you propose we can do this ? ?LET's try by enforcing ourselves and our own posts. The more people BICKER about who's off topic and who isn't just makes it worse. You should start a Forum then... Quote How do you propose we can do this ? ? Any member of Congress WOULD make an excellent resource to explain how we do this, as they are expert at being off topic while seemingly on topic. As far as the license plate...yes, quite the warning.Just how much can we say about this licence plate, or are we supposed to be discussing anything but the tag?um...this topic is located in Home / Other / Other / Off topic and we're debating wether it's "allowed" to be off-topic? If you want to keep a topic on-topic you don't ask how topics GO off-topic, because then YOU are switching the topic to why topics go off-topic and making no attempt to keep things on-topic. The only thing that would keep a topic on-topic is on-topic posts. And the fact that it's in the off-topic forum basically means it doesn't matter anyway. @ BC......... top reply, is that why it says 'genius' under your name? |

Solve : Microsoft Racist?? |
|
Answer» Poland Advertising by MICROSOFT ... oops forgot the hand! Snapped!Humans are animals.Old. ACTUALLY, this was on TDWTF three years ago: http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/p/13087/202923.aspx#202923 Quote Either those localising Microsoft's site for Poland felt that excessive racial diversity had no place in their homogenous country and would shock their customers, or wanted to further emphasize their inclusiveness by altering the IMAGE to portray a man with an enormously oversized head, a broken neck, and inverse vitiligo. As someone of Polish descent, I'd tend to prefer the latter, since at least it's creative and explains the bad photoshop job. But I'm not too optimistic. I thought I had seen that several years ago.here's one of the responses on TDWTF that explains how it rascist, and how it's also not just appeasing to some sort of rascist Polish thing: Quote Being Polish myself, all I can tell that Microsoft screwed lots of things doing this job, but replacing the face in question might not be one of them. Here in Poland, racial diversity is not as strong as in civilized areas of the world. Actually, there is none. All we got here are Commies, which come in red, of course. And there is only a few of them left. No Afro-Europeans. No Asians. Seeing PERSON of another colour of skin is still somewhat unusual, and, IMO, no wonder that someone at MS decided, that original image does not picture its target in this specific geographical region. Still, you could ask if it really matters. Or why they did not remove Asian guy. Or why there are no polar bears outside. Or why this image is photoshopped in so disturbing way. Just as a side note: some people might consider this as a racism, but I believe that it's not that. Polish people are just not familiar with variety of cultures, because there is really few people of exotic descent here in Poland. Seriously, just tell me by yourself: woud YOU like to come here? Yeah, I thought so. OTOH we think all your political correctnes, with all this avoiding colours, feminoamericans, "Baa baa black sheep" being banned from nurseries is really exaggerated. But still, I haven't been there. PS. As I mentioned before, English is not my native language. All spelling and grammar errors you found, you can keep them for yourself.Quote All spelling and grammar errors you found, you can keep them for yourself. Actually, we could tell that English was your second language, because you made fewer, if no, mistakes than most for whom English is the first language. Interesting choice in the "global" marketplace.Quote from: Aegis on May 18, 2010, 07:20:44 PM Actually, we could tell that English was your second language, because you made fewer, if no, mistakes than most for whom English is the first language. Sad, but definitely true!!Most of us would not even notice. But there were no blonds! Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 20, 2010, 10:39:05 PM Most of us would not even notice. If that had not supposed to make sense then you've succeeded!Quote from: reddevilggg on May 21, 2010, 05:02:23 AM If that had not supposed to make sense then you've succeeded! The term Blomds may refer to males with blond hair and related physical features. Especially in EUROPE. But the term often means either sex. Quote Because of emigration and invasion from northern Europe, there are a number of blonds in Southern Europe and Eastern Europe. Due to migration from Europe from the 16th to the 20th centuries, blonds are also found all around the world such as in North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Siberia, etc.The there are Brazilian Blonds in Bikinis... Let's not go there. last time I checked blonds weren't a different race of people, therefore discriminaton based on that trait is not racist. I'm not sure what it is. Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 22, 2010, 08:17:32 AM last time I checked blonds weren't a different race of people, therefore discriminaton based on that trait is not racist. I'm not sure what it is.Citation needed.Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 22, 2010, 11:58:59 AM Citation needed. No, not really. the word "Racist" is evidently derived from the root word "race" and therefore it applies to differences of race. |

Solve : The disassembly of an old, busted 2.5" Hard Drive - HD? |
|
Answer» Recently lost my 80GB Hitachi laptop hard drive to age so I decided to try out Final CUT on my new MACBOOK and created the video below. By the way, you're fast with a screw driver. LOLGotta love visual effects Quote Is this your first video on youtube?Nah, got total of 72 to date. http://www.youtube.com/carbondudeoxidech This is probably the best quality one so far. Apple & Final Cut ftw! BTW, a 80GB Hitachi is what came in my Compaq notebook PC when new. I now have it in an external enclosure since I recently installed a larger HD in the computer. I BOUGHT the computer in July 2007. So, the 80GB Hitachi was used in it for about 2 years and 10 months. No problems with it; ran quiet.; hope to get some use from it now as an external drive. When you had the 80GB Hitachi open, i.e. the cover removed, and connected it to a computer via USB, was it actually reading data then? If you look closely at the arm, you'll notice the head was bent slightly upwards. It wasn't exactly reading, but trying to read the data. All data.....lost......Now, who's that person at 1:15?heh, I like how you rotated it at the beginning, like a magician about to perform a trick "see, it's just a normal hard drive". I should have recorded when I dissassembled my old 42MB hard drive. that this was huge in comparison to nay other hard drive I've owned since. Quote from: Helpmeh on May 29, 2010, 10:05:35 AM Now, who's that person at 1:15? It's his evil twin from the mirror universe. You know how mirrors work, right? Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 29, 2010, 10:15:26 AM It's his evil twin from the mirror universe. You <DO> know how mirrors work, right?I hate how it stares at me.... My evil twin makes me bring him CHEESE... and then I get there, and he already has some. it's aggravating, to say the least. Back on-topic though, I forgot to say, NICE video Haha thanks! I didn't know my camera shot such high quality video until I used Final Cut. My previous editing software, Corel Videostudio, claimed to be a HD editor but it seemed to be such low resolution. Expect more videos soon. (By soon, I mean within the next few months) If anyone want's to send me stuff to disassemble on video, I'd gladly do it. Nice Video, Carbon. That HD looks like I came right outta the box actually. And more "Precision" removal with the label, usually I just tear the thing off Quote from: macdad- on May 29, 2010, 11:38:25 AM That HD looks like I came right outta the box actually. Well it sounds like I was using the wrong terminology, and what I was using was obviously a "Dongle". To be honest I never heard that terminology until hearing it in this thread. Answer» Yeah, well that's what my in window Haier AC unit has becomith... Basically, the cycle goes like this, it's cooling the room off at night, then when the morning humidity and heat kicks in, the front condenser which is below freezing starts to condensate, that condensation turns to ice, and, well I woke up to an ODD noise coming from my AC unit this morning. It was the ice cracking and splitting as it formed but met the WARMER than preferred by ice temperature of my room. Hopefully I'll have a camera handy the next time this happens... Solve : 10 Everyday Items Hackers Are Targeting Right Now? |

Answer» From Fox News. Just when you thought it was safe to use your computer, hackers have figured out how to attack everyday items. Your printer, your cellphone -- even the blender in your kitchen -- can be hacked and used against you. http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/06/11/everyday-items-hackers-targeting-right/?test=faces NO, not my blender!Sounds like another Faux News story.A think there is a little truth to the story. Frankly, whether you agree with them or not, Fox news is more honest about it's bias that most other news sources.Quote from: rthompson80819 on June 25, 2010, 10:41:35 PM So everything on Fox News is false and everything on CNN and MSNBC is absolutely true? we're not really talking about bias... it's more a case of the blind leading the blind.Quote from: rthompson80819 on June 25, 2010, 10:41:35 PM So everything on Fox News is false and everything on CNN and MSNBC is absolutely true?Quote from: Helpmeh on June 25, 2010, 08:29:35 PM articles like that |

Solve : Bomb the Oil Well!? |
|
Answer» Bomb the Oil Well! Could explosives seal off the Gulf oil leak? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science_and_environment/10318188.stm For some reason I suddenly thought of the "devil's cigarette lighter"... I can't remember but I think they did the same thing to put that out.In a STANDARD oil well fire they will set an explosive charge by the well head, and when it detonates it starves the well fire from oxygen, which puts out the fire. But the leak in gulf isn't on fire. But hey, we have plenty of nukes, and that should take care of it.
