Solve : Best USA cities for job in 2018? |
Answer» This link might be of interest to USA residents. Job market favorability RANKING: 3 What is no surprise is California is the favored state. Nevertheless, I am thinking about leaving California. I am too old to work. And the cost of liking is greater than my social security income. We moved 2 1/2 years ago from the #1 listed job market to the #7 listed market. San Jose is great for finding a job but it's too crowded and housing costs are thru the roof! We moved where we are now because I retired and it was less expensive to live here. However, I went back to work about 18 months ago because I was bored with retirement. However, I'm thinking I may re-retire in a year or less. Cost of Living in the US is greater than anyone's SSI which is why I decided at a very young age not to be totally RELIANT on SSI for my retirement income. I watched my dad struggle and require financial help from my sister and I to get by in his retirement. SSI may stretch further in another state but it STILL won't make for a comfortable retirement.how about residing in New Jersey and doing job in New York. I have heard that many people in the US do that. The commuting time from Newyork to New Jersey it like 1:45 to 2 hours and New Jersey is cheap as compared to Newyork Ummm...Jersey ain't cheap.Lots of people use long commutes to be able to afford a place to live on whatever salary they earn. However, a commute that is 1.5 - 2 hours in each direction adds a significant amount of time to the work day. I've been fortunate in my work career that I've been able to keep my commute to under 1 hour in each direction. I also modified my start/stop times, if possible, in order to avoid peak commute times when traffic was heaviest. Working from home is also be a good way to be able to live somewhere affordable but work for a company in a place where salaries are higher. I moved to San Diego TWO years back and absolutely love it here. Great weather, good jobs, and lots of things to do both in and around the city. Google is also apparently building a new San Diego campus which likely means that there will be a ton of new tech jobs coming to the city too, plus the attendant economy to support these highly paid tech workers. I'd love to see it become some sort of pseudo silicon valley. |

Solve : Can we talk about Climate Change?? |
Answer» Can we? It is very controversial. Moderator, if not please lock or delete this post. Most relevant ink now: https://www.thedailybeast.com/climate-scientist-katharine-hayhoe-accuses-cnn-of-bumping-her-expertise-for-rick-santorum?via=desktop&source=Reddit Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist and co-author of the recently released U.S. National Climate Assessment, was supposed to be Anderson Cooper’s guest during CNN’s primetime broadcast Tuesday night. She even pre-taped the appearance for AC360, but when the live show aired, it was nowhere to be seen. Why do you do this over and over ? ?...just curious. Quote from: patio on November 28, 2018, 02:44:26 PM Why do you do this over and over ? ?...just curious. When? I am having memory loss. You bring up news ITEMS...but cite some of the worst sources in the World...My interest is the content, not the web site. Some news stories are of concern to people who also like computers. The content of that story was about what a significant scientist had to say about a current topic. The comments are traced to come Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist and co-author of the recently released U.S. National Climate Assessment. Here own web site: http://katharinehayhoe.com/wp2016/ Patio,do you say she is among 'some of the worst sources in the World? Here is information about the company she is with: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Climate_Assessment Quote The First National Climate Assessment was published in 2000.[5][Notes 1] Between 2002 and 2009, USGCRP previously known as the U.S. Climate Change Science Program (CCSP), produced twenty-one Synthesis and Assessment Products (SAPs).[6] The second NCA was published in 2009[6] and the third was released in 2014.[7] Katharine Hayhoe, made a critical remark about how an interview she did was not aired by a major media outlet. Here remarks were picked up b a source you do not like. Google, not me, pulled up the article in that trash rag. Like I said, the content is more important the the relay point. Back to the topic. Are we allowed to talk about controversial news subjects that have a profound impact on our future? Or is the forum dedicated to the idea oft speaking only about CPUs and RAM and ignoring the verifiable facts that soon we will not have any useful computers at all. Without infrastructure, computers will no longer be valuable. Except for playing a game by yourself. I think readers of this forum are people who understand howto evaluate data and draw rational conclusions about the value of climate research. But I am often wrong. Just posted on CNN: https://www.salon.com/2018/11/29/author-of-report-on-global-warming-calls-out-cnn-for-bumping-her-for-climate-denier-rick-santorum/ I'd say it's only controversial inside the U.S. Quote and ignoring the verifiable facts that soon we will not have any useful computers at all. Without infrastructure, computers will no longer be valuable. This sort of hyperbolic doomsaying is the reason why there are so many "climate skeptics" and deniers regarding anthropogenic climate change, because people frequently make these sorts of statements and it takes incredibly cursory research to determine that it is altogether a lie. Is "Soon we will not have any useful computers at all" really a verifiable fact? verified by what? time travel? No. It's not. It's counter-productive doomsaying. It's like the folks talking about a "point of no return" where Earth will become Venus, which is absolute poppycock too. The greenhouse gases we are adding to the atmosphere were previously part of the atmosphere 65 million years ago. The issue is that those sorts of ridiculously over-the-top claims mean that people will look into them, find out they are BS, and then dismiss the entire concept altogether. The change in climate from our *reintroduction* of CO2 into the atmosphere will *not* make the planet altogether uninhabitable to life or some sort of venusian wasteland; the concerns are far more real than that. As I said, we are *reintroducing* CO2 to the atmosphere; remember that Fossil fuels are largely from plants which got their CO2 from the atmosphere of the time. The problem is effectively that whereas the climate change from those tropical high temperatures with high CO2 to the modern day occurred over perhaps hundreds of millions of years and therefore evolution by natural selection was capable of allowing life to adapt, the much faster rate of change we are seeing through our reintroduction is far too fast for adaptations, which is expected to result in a mass extinction event, which will change ecosystems in completely unpredictable ways- Only a relatively small subset of current life will find itself suitable for the changing environment. The affected Human factors largely involve arable land distribution and changes to our underlying agricultural infrastructure. Human migration will be economic migration, not one based directly on regional temperatures. For example people might EMIGRATE from Central America not because they find it too hot, but because they cannot find jobs there because the economy which relied on agriculture has collapsed due to the crops they rely on no longer being arable in their region. That emigration will have an impact on the economies of developed countries as well regardless of what impact climate change will have on the climate of those countries. How, or whether, any of this will affect high tech industries remains to be seen. Any Human...scientist or not...degreed or not who think we can destroy the planet is extremely naive'... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB0aFPXr4n4 Should actually be taken literally...Thank you both for your replies. But that does not mean I agree. Somebody said the official report was an extreme scenario. Speaking about extreme scenarios... Which of these are extreme, moderate or careless? 1. Wait for more data before making changes. 2. Attempt to create trouble to prove a point. 3. Use propaganda to influence people to come to your side. 4. Simply do nothing, neither for or against what anybody says. 5. Just pay attention to the most clever arguments. 6. It is impossible to foretell the future to any large degree. If you like the #4, just do not replay to this. Quote Somebody said the official report was an extreme scenario.Who? **I** never said anything about any official report. The "Extreme scenario"- where Earth becomes some kind of post-apocalyptic, lifeless desert wasteland or ends up with a Venusian runaway greenhouse effect, (And apparently that there will be no computers soon, according to "verified facts" (What facts? who verified them?) are not just "extreme scenarios" they are fabricated NONSENSE with no supporting evidence at all. The problem is not that this means the entire aspect can be dismissed. It is a VERY REAL problem. The irony is that going around talking about these fabricated doomsday scenarios does the entire movement and effort a great, massive disservice- perhaps even greater than any corporate interest working against it, because it's trivially easy to find aspects that are straight-up lies. At that point people may rightly wonder what other aspects they were lied to about, and thereby are more likely to adopt a "wait and see" attitude than listen to any call to action.BC, I did not mean you. That somebody is a spokesman for the White House. https://thebl.com/politics/white-house-says-dire-climate-report-based-on-extreme-scenario.html Quote The Trump administration is downplaying the significance of a report issued Friday that included dire predictions about the impact of climate change in the U.S. The White House said the STUDY was largely based on “the most extreme scenario” and doesn’t account for new technology and other INNOVATIONS that could diminish carbon emissions and the effects of climate change.OK, apologies for the misunderstanding. You have a tendency to respond to other posts in a third person style though. I agree then- the predictions made therein were certainly no extreme case like those I described- they were actually rather conservative. The dismissal is pretty silly because it's not really denying that climate change is occuring but is basically assuming somebody else will fix it, which is partly the attitude that got us here to begin with.BC, right on. I agree will what you just said. |

Solve : What do you want from this Black Friday/cyber Monday?? |
Answer» I want to buy some legit deals on security software but I can't find any good deals. Until Now, I have only found these pre-black friday deals:
Are these deals good? Or shall I wait for 23rd to get more discounts?Patience, my friend. Those deals will most likely still be there, if not even more discounted on actual black Friday. Plus, sometimes they say something on sale when it is literally one cent lower than the original price. So be careful!Do you think there would be some older-gen Mac Minis on sale since the new one has come out? I want to snag some on the cheap and build a home media server for me and my parentsIt would be much easier and cheaper to do this on a Windows computer. Trust me. There will be better deals and you will get more for your money if you go the windows route. In regards to the subject of: What do you want from this Black Friday/cyber Monday? I'm actually not that excited for this years offerings. I will definitely look to see whats offered but i dont have any must have purchases. I tried to hold off to buy a new laptop under one of these offerings, but the Digital Animation College class I am taking pushed me to buying a newer laptop sooner vs later. So I got a Lenovo Model 330 with Core i3 8130U with 8GB DDR4 and 128GB SSD instead of the other model for same price with a slow 5400 rpm 1TB Hard Drive for $349.99 on sale. https://www.staples.com/ideapad-330-81de00lcus-15-6-laptop-computer-intel-i3-128gb-ssd-8gb-ddr4-windows-10-home/product_24328358 Bought mine at Staples because the same laptop at Walmart was being sold with only 4GB RAM instead of 8GB, and 8GB is a must. The old laptop I have has 4GB RAM and its always using maximum RAM and paging to the 5400 rpm 320GB HDD. This is likely SuperFetch, but twice as much RAM for about the same price is so much better. Only feature I dont really care for about it is that the battery is internal to the laptop and not detachable. So if I ever need to perform a hard reset without power it means I would be having to CRACK the case open to disconnect the battery. However, its been quite a while since i had to do that to a laptop and so not that BIG of an issue. The improved GPU for Digital Animation is so much better than the Intel HD 2500 graphics i was working with PRIOR on a Celeron 1000M laptop from black friday deal at $279.99 in 2013 at Newegg. So smooth and fast making it a very pleasant laptop to work with for creating and editing animations in Adobe Animate and Adobe Photoshop. I will probably keep an eye out for a larger SSD which might be offered for black friday and increase this new laptops SSD CAPACITY from 128GB to around 500GB since 128GB is kind of tight for the OS and Adobe Software Suite Bundle that I have ACCESS to under Adobe Cloud subscription. I find the Black Friday "deals" pretty ho-hum so never even bother with them.Bought my limit of 3 of these Intel 256GB SSD's at $34.99 each on Black Friday deal. Checked back a few hours later and says sold out. Hoping my order went through. Newegg status says they are in transit, so maybe I was lucky to get 3 of them at this bargain. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=20-167-432 Will be nice to get rid of the old 500GB Maxtor Hard Drive in my one system and have SSD speed. Then the 2 others going into laptop HDD to SSD upgrades for extended batter life and speed. I'm in the UK where Black Friday has become a thing in recent years however I almost never find anything exciting, people flock like mental buying things that are "on sale" when half the time it's available for the "sale" price most of the time or where the "was" price is ridiculously inflated. I find myself constantly using https://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/ to make sure I'm not being ripped off. Last year on Black Friday I was in the market for a new TV. I looked on Amazon who had decided to remove the model numbers from all the TV listings in their Black Friday sale making it impossible to compare pricing, instead, the model I was looking at was simply listed as '49" Sony 4k TV' for £650. Thankfully they at least appear to be showing the full model numbers this year. Not only that but the "was" price was listed as £1100, sounds like a great deal until you realise that it was only £1100 at launch 8 months before and had been sitting around the £700 mark in the days leading up to Black Friday having been sold for even less than £650 in the past. I ended up getting the exact same model in Costco for £629 despite them not even having a Black Friday sale on. Nowadays I'll still take a look in the Black Friday sales but I'll always be cautious and only buy something if it is a genuinely good deal. |

Solve : How Amazon is goingto destroy itself.? |
Answer» This in 'off topic' because I don't have a concise news article that spells it out. Amazon’s HQ2 search is officially over: The company confirmed via a blog post that Long Island City and Crystal City, a neighborhood in Arlington, Virginia, were the locations chosen for its new, split-up headquarters.Hold the press... there is mere! Quote Update: On February 14, Amazon reportedly canceled its HQ2 deal with New York City. Instead of making good PR, Amazon blew it. If this makes enough customers angry, Amazon may lose the position they have had until now. What do you think? Do you even care? What aspect of this WOULD either anger or cost Amazon customers? In private meetings Amazon asked for and got support in the form of a very big subsidy from city funds. When this became public, a protest was made by some. After that Amazon canceled the deal. To many people it looks like Amazon was asking the City to just give Amazon some money to stay in the city and not open the second HQ elsewhere. In the next few days expect to hear more of this. Unless something else gets the attention of the media. Amazon has both its critics and its fans. This article seems to explain why some New Yonkers are angry: Gone in a New York minute: How the Amazon deal with NYC fell apart. (AP) Quote Then Amazon made it official: It chose the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens to build a $2.5 billion campus that could house 25,000 workers, in addition to new offices planned for northern Virginia. Cuomo and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, Democrats who have been political adversaries for years, trumpeted the decision as a major coup after edging out more than 230 other proposals. For more detail read the whole article. Geek you should do your research...a bunch of Leftist politicians made Amazon uncomfortable with the Queens location...even considering the tax breaks. So they walked AWAY from the deal.Amazon isn't going away any time soon and Jeff Bezos isn't losing sleep over the NYC debacle. Right now AMZN shares are around $1600.00 CAD. It has a market cap of $789.8 Billion (the B isn't a typo). It recently went over the $1 Trillion mark when shares were north of $2000.00 Bezos owns 78.88 million shares as of his last SEC filing. The next largest shareholder is Andrew Jassy ( a measly 91,231 shares). Amazon shoppers could care less about NYC. They're just looking for the best deal & the easiest shopping experience. The sleep Bezos is losing is when he thinks about how much he's going to have to pay his wife in their divorce.I'm with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who says “Today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers and their neighbors defeated Amazon’s corporate greed, its worker exploitation and the power of the richest man in the world”. If that's "Leftist", then I am a Leftist. Bezos, Cuomo and de Blasio blew the Amazon deal. I wish we had even one politician like her in my country. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 17, 2019, 07:31:46 PM New Yuk City Love it! You can have her anyday...the sooner the better...Just sayin.Never had you down as that type, Patio. Just saying. I think I should avoid discussing politics, because I nearly deleted my account just then. All i'm sayin is she is an extremist...look it up. She's totally happy with an 80% tax rate on anyone makin over a million a year... Agree or not that kinda scares me.Would it be a blanket 80% on all income? Or 80% in the income over $1M? In my country (UK) you pay tax at zero % on income up to $15,000, then at 20% on the amount between $15K and $60K, then 40% on anything over $60K, and a special "additional" heavy rate of 45% on any income over $200,000. That's it. British pounds converted to dollars, and round figures. if you made a million you'd get to KEEP $575K. more if you had a good accountant. That seems about fair to me. I am a left winger, but I do understand you don't want to drive capital away. All i'm sayin is at your rates top end is 40%...she wants 80%... Scary ? ?...or no ? Quote All i'm sayin is she is an extremist...look it up.I can't find anything that I think supports that very well. I can definitely find articles claiming it, but it's not very well supported. Quote She's totally happy with an 80% tax rate on anyone makin over a million a year... As I understand the idea in the U.S is to re-introduce additional higher tax brackets back into the Tax Code which had been removed through lobbying in the 1960's. Right now the U.S Tax brackets top out at 37% for 300,000 (500,000 for 'head of household'). With added tax brackets, the taxable income over that amount is taxed at that rate- the full taxable income isn't taxed at the bracket rate. I mention "reintroduce" as in the past the United States has had higher tax brackets which went as high as 94% in 1944, for taxpayers earning over $200,000 a year (about 2.7 Million today). The tax rates were reduced in the 1960's, to great success at the time, as tax revenue managed to increase thanks to the influx of capital from corporate tax cuts. The idea behind it is that the CURRENT economic climate is different from the economic climate of the 1960's or the 1980's which both saw rather large tax rate reductions at the upper tax brackets, and having higher tax brackets for higher income earners can similarly boost tax revenue. If they had 1/2 a brain a simple flat tax plan would triple revenue...without killing the working/middle class at all... |

Solve : Sharp Objects? |
Answer» Great TV series, great music. I'm only on episode 6, so no spoilers, please! Much better than True Detective season 4. Is it a HBO program? U.S. psychological thriller Sharp Objects has been making waves since its television debut last year, and RECENTLY actress Patricia Clarkson bagged herself the Best Supporting Actress award at this year's prestigious Golden Globe Awards. The acclaimed series tells the story of a troubled crime reporter who returns to her home town in order to investigate a double murder. But will Sharp Objects be on Netflix UK?Is it safe for me? I am very fragile. It was an HBO production, aired on SKY Atlantic in the UK. The horror or gloom or whatever is mental rather than physical. |

Solve : Why you must stop using lithium ion batteries? |
Answer» Not a question. This is a statement. If it kills you, the damage is permanent. Quote of the Month Finalist ...To take some liberties on Churchill, "Lithium batteries are perhaps the worst form of rechargeable battery we've come up with. Except for all the others we have TRIED." The issues that result in headlines are due to manufacturing defects or extenuating circumstances; Poor manufacturing of any battery is going to result in complications. NiCad batteries for example will explode just like Li-Ion batteries- even more destructively, in some cases - if overcharged. Fact of the matter is that the "Nightly news" works by reporting grim stories and bad things, with maybe a 5 minute human interest story as a "positive". The top story isn't going to be "Lithium Ion Battery doesn't explode, causes no injuries" or "black man pulled over by police is let off with a warning for his excess speed" even though both occur with far more frequency than the events than are actually reported, which is WHY those events are worth reporting. Don't take events being reported as those events being established as "normal" because if they were normal, they wouldn't be reported on. In the 90's there were similar doomsday headlines about the Apple Powerbook batteries- which were NiCad's- when there were a few reports of them exploding. As far as causing death, the only deaths that could be said to in any way be caused by Lithium Ion batteries are cases where say somebody leaves a laptop under blankets or on a couch with poor ventilation and it overheats and the battery catches fire and burns down the house. Those are unfortunate mistakes made by victims and aren't an inherent "flaw" with Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer batteries; batteries in general all have their own risk of fire or other damage. It's like getting sensational about Hilroy paper because if you leave clusters of it near an open flame, it can start a fire, and that we must stop using paper.Lighters cause fires....Film at Eleven. Quote from: patio on June 19, 2018, 02:07:35 PM Lighters cause fires....Film at Eleven. And tune in tomorrow morning when we speak to a papercut survivor and hear their harrowing tale. If you do not know how to USE the pen - you'll choke on it. If you do not know how to drink water, you'll choke on it. If you do not know how to swim, you will drown. This I wanted to say do not know how to use do not take) How does anyone choke on a pen? Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 26, 2018, 12:38:19 PM Coke on a Pen? Line it up, man! Lithium ion battery might be the reason behind the note 7 explosions. Solve : Cloudflare. What dothey do? Are they good or bad?? |
Answer» Cloudfare. It is a giant Web Security company. Very very big and important. So why did I even ask? And why on Off Topic? Well, I had no idea. I found some news items that claim they are very bad. However, I do not wish to put the links here. Instead, I would like to know what you know about the activities of the Cloudflare company. One REPORT is the Cloudfare has helped WikiLeaks to get back online. But is not WikiLeaks a criminal group? Yes? No? Would it matter? I am not trying to prove anything. I just want to know if any of this is true and if it matters. Some claim that this kind of thing invokes the first amendment rights. Please answer me in plain English? Cloudflare Offers Content Delivery Services, which allows sites to be ROUTED faster by delivering cached versions of generated pages, DDOS protection (by using the same network, large influxes of suspicious traffic can be blocked from site access via captcha to prevent automated attacks) and DNS services. Quote One report is the Cloudfare has helped WikiLeaks to get back online. Since you've decided not to post any links, I can only assume that is in reference to wikileaks switching to using Cloudflare as a CDN to mitigate a Distributed Denial of Service attack against them in 2012. Quote But is not WikiLeaks a criminal group? Yes? No? Would it matter? That tends to depend who you ask, and definitely tends to lean into the territory of a political discussion- but in the instance mentioned it isn't relevant. Cloudflare's role did not impede on any law enforcement activity or serve as a sort of "getaway vehicle" for example- in the instance where they assisted, they provided their standard paid service such that they mitigated a DDOS from a group calling itself "AntiLeaks", who had also performed similar Internet Denial of Service floods against the Ecuadorian Government website. Thank you for the response. Until I came upon the negative article I had no idea about any of this. I did not want to include a link if the story is false or misleading. Google counts links and gives points for stories that get more links. This is PART of how a fake news story gets attention. The more people quote it, the bigger it gets. ** I sent you a PM with the name of the wicked source and the headline. As you see it is very inflammatory. It is not my intent to get into apolitical issue. So then, if a big company does its best to provide a open Internet, somebody will com along and slander them for allowing bad things. ** Yes, other web sites and starting to repeat the story and make it sound like the company is working for criminals.PM received, responded to it. Looks like the article falsely presented some information and presented some "facts" it could not possibly know. In any case, the OFAC is not known for being lenient; I'd expect that if Cloudflare, a U.S Company, was not authorized to do business with sanctioned individuals and was doing so, they would have put a stop to it already. I have heard that if people use the Tor network to get to Pirate Bay proxies, they can get endless capchas because they are routed via Cloudflare which gets automatedly suspicious about what it sees as very frequent connection attempts from the same Tor exit node IP address (because lots of people, apparently, use Tor to get around ISP blocks on PB), which suggests that Cloudflare aren't too fussy about what they host.Cloudflare itself is a completely legitimate product, anyone can set it up without any human intervention from Cloudflare's part, it's only reasonable to expect that dodgy websites may use it however I'd like to think that if a site is clearly illegal/violates Cloudflare's ToS, they will shut them down. I use Cloudflare for a bunch of my own stuff, even this very website sits behind Cloudflare. The only legitimate criticism I can see of Cloudflare is that they are now so commonly used, that if they experience outages (which has happened in the past) it can cause loads of different websites to go offline however ultimately it's down to a website owner to weigh up the risk of using Cloudflare vs going without it. Essentially, all cloudflare does is sit as a reverse proxy in front of a website, they also usually manage the DNS for the website. When a user reaches the website they instead hit cloudflare's servers which then proxy the request through to the website's own servers. The idea behind this is that they can provide caching services for various elements on their website and serve them from their global CDN which both improves performance for end users as well as reducing load on a website's own servers. It also means that if the webserver goes down, Cloudflare can either serve a cached copy of the site or a friendly error message instead of the connection just FAILING. Additionally, since end users are talking to Cloudflare instead of a website's servers directly, the website will be protected by Cloudflare's DDoS protection systems which can be prohibitively expensive for a small website to implement on their own.Found This... |

Solve : Camp Fire in California? |
Answer» The Camp Fire in California has burned over 70,000 acres. Not to get political...but suggest to Nancy that outlawing clearcutting 10 years ago put you in this predicamentPatio, you have a point. Years ago there was a practice that reduces the spread of wildfires. When It Comes To Wildfire, Politics Lag Behind Science. https://www.opb.org/news/article/wildfire-politics-science-washington-west/ by Cassandra Profita and Jeff Mapes Aug. 6, 2018 Updated: Aug. 8, 2018 Quote Last summer, the woods were on fire to the right of this trail in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, which straddles southwestern Oregon and northern California. But the flames died out soon after crossing the path – when they reached a part of the forest that had already burned in 2012. The old fire had taken out all the plants and brush that would have served as fuel. It's actually more due to drought conditions and low humidity than eliminating clearcutting. The article Geek linked to doesn't have anything to do with clearcutting, it supports letting fires burn and not working to put them out. That tends to clear out the underbrush and dead trees, while the healthy trees survive. That's the current philosophy in CALF where they let the fires burn and only fight to protect homes and businesses. Clearcutting is completely different and I personally doubt it is done anywhere in the US. It is the practice of cutting down every tree when harvesting lumber. Here in BC the forest fire issues are generally considered to be a result of forest management issues. Primarily, crown land is leased to logging companies for logging activity with the stipulation that they will manage the forest renewal up until a stage known as "Free to grow", when their obligation ends. At that point, the trees are, "free to grow" but nobody is actually managing the forest's continued growth which can lead to conditions that allow for wildfires to spread more quickly. Considering there is still clearcutting in the B.C Forestry and logging industry and we still have serious yearly problems with wildfires, it doesn't appear to be necessarily related to risk factors.I disagree...Perhaps we can agree there ought to be a better way to recce the loss oflife and property. I give the link to show concerns have been expressed. I did not intend to say one method is better than another. The rules here in the USA can vary by region and local conditions. IMHO,rules made by politicians are not always the best. Back to topic. The "camp fire" is still very active and the danger of more property damage is ever present. Temperature WIND sped conditions are bad. Here in this area we all have to listen to the radio every hour. The Sheriff of Butte county has advised all in this region to monitor the TV and Radio stations broadcasting alters. To date, 29 people have died as a direct result of the wildfire this past week. The one wildfire destroyed over 6,400 homes this week . (These stats will change.) Sad to say, some of the newspapers do not correctly report the detail. I can not get Google to give me the right answer. Is it that had to parse a report? I am wearing a face mask and staying inside in my home Geek, I would be putting together a bug-out bag and gathering all important items and storing them in your vehicle that you would use if you need to evacuate. You have probably already thought of this but it doesn't hurt to remind. Quote from: Ajfer03 on November 12, 2018, 05:22:05 PM Geek, I would be putting together a bug-out bag and gathering all important items and storing them in your vehicle that you would use if you need to evacuate. You have probably already thought of this but it doesn't hurt to remind.Right! That is what they keep saying and every day I monitor the local FM station that has a constant feed from the TV station. The are doing a great job of sending out the updates from the Sheriff and the Fire Captain. The car has gas in the tank and we keep bottled water in the trunk. I have a 'go bag' next to the front door. Quote from the President of the Pasadena Fire Fighters Association in response to Trumps claims the fires are caused by poor forest management. Mr. President, with all due respect, you are wrong. The fires in So. Cal are urban interface fires and have NOTHING to do with forest management. Come to SoCal and learn the facts & help the victims. Scott Austin, Pres IAFF 809. IAFFNewsDesk I think I will trust the opinions of the men risking their lives fighting these fires over any crooked politician. Wishing you the best of luck Geek !Nobody said anything about Trump... The only person who mentioned Forest Management was me, but I wasn't talking about California. It was one of the ideas being floated around to try to solve our Forest fire problem, which has consumed over 5 million acres of BC Forests just in 2018 alone. And even then it's not considered an issue of "gross mismanagement" but rather that the processes in place are either insufficient or deleterious. Either way, conditions are going to be wildly different between the two areas; As it is now for example Timber harvesting has fallen in California since the 1990's which has led to thicker forests which present their own risks with regards to wildfires. Part of the elevated fire hazard attributed to California forests over the last few years by the California Forestry Association is the increased density paired with a larger number of dead, dry trees. There also is no commercial lumber operations taking place in state-owned lands, which isn't likely to be helping. BC said: Quote There also is no commercial lumber operations taking place in state-owned lands, which isn't likely to be helping. That is true. Fires in the areas owned and managed by commercial firms are few and easier to contain. My family, many years past, once owned area near Uriah that was 6000 areas and included some commercial timber. We managed it under the rules of the state of California. Twice we did have grass fires that got out of control, but hey never became wildfires. We had roads into the land that allowed big Caterpillar tractors into the land. But that area is near the coast and the temperatures seldom go over 100 F in the summer. The problem in the Sacramento valley is the high temperatures and the high winds. You can not stop the wind. The red alter has now been lifted. KHSL is now back to regular programming. But some fires are still burning. For info goto: https://www.actionnewsnow.com/ (You can make donations using the above web site.) The Camp Fire is now at 125,000 acres. It is still growing. About 46 people have died as a direct result of the fire. Maybe in the future we can have better methods to avoid this kind of tragedy. Update about the California fires and what it might mean for you in the future. This is from dictation. Please read this over before you conclude that it is a waste of your time. Today I turned into the channel 12 broadcast from Chico, California. I heard two very important topics that I want to share with you here. This is from what I am able to remember about today's broadcast from Channel 12 with regard to the camp fire here in California. There are two important issues that have to be resolved. Number one. The serious communications failure after the fire. Number two. The lack of responsibility of one of the biggest utility companies. These are not political issues, these are technical and social / legal issues that need to be resolved. To put it another way, if it happens here, it could happen where you live. The serious communications failure. After the fire threat had died down, the city Council of paradise met together in a safe location and tried setting up computer equipment only to find out that they could not get to their email accounts. The details for not spelled out, but it certainly is a serious problem. It could indicate a serious technical problem or else the people on the Council don't know how to use Their Own Computers. The lack of responsibility of a major utility COMPANY. The broadcaster I heard at noon time had an interview with one resident in the area who says she got an email from PG&E stating that they were coming in to her property to examine power lines. She claims that the power lines were creating sparks. Details were not available. PG&E claims that those lines were disabled at that time. The TV commentator went on to state that PG&E had confirmed that there was an issue with one of their power lines just before the campfire started. The implication is that an oversight or error by the power company started the campfire. This is not the first second or even third time that utility company has been accused of a lack of responsibility that is led to the loss of property and human lives. This is a very serious issue and it could have widespread implications. I do not have a link that goes directly to these stories. But channel 12 does have a website with all the stories and interviews available. www.actionnewsnow.com Please help me find the relevant links on the website that support what I can remember about the noon newscast today. Thank you.The danger is not over. Many people have found that some parts of the City of Paradise are present a hazard. Also, the fire is still active in the area near Berry Creek. More deaths have been confirmed. The smoke has spread over a large area, Residents of Sacramento have been to to wear a face mask when outdoors. Photos and maps of the area are up on a number of web sites. You can find them using Google Images. Here is a recent space PHOTO: It is now the worst wild free in California history. http://time.com/5453710/california-camp-fire-deadliest-wildfires-us-history/ EDIT: The City of Chico was not harmed. The fire closed a highway to the south of Chico. The highway is now open. |

Solve : Scams: Vendors of Fraudulent Diabetes & Cancer Cures? |
Answer» Try a search with this phrase. If these sites are scams, Why can the government not shut them all down? That is a long process typically involving the FDA taking legal action against the websites in question. Some other countries handle it differently. For example, in the UK the 1939 Cancer Act made advertisements that claim to "offer to treat any person for cancer, or to prescribe any remedy therefor, or to give any advice in connection with the treatment thereof" illegal. Solve : Titanium Dioxide Lawsuit? |
Answer» This is not news. If you are shopping for a new PRINTER you may find a warning about the compound mentioned in the TITLE of this post. In a July 10, 2015 order, an Alameda County Superior Court judge found in favor of DEFENDANTS in a Proposition 65 lawsuit alleging exposures to titanium dioxide in cosmetic products. The defendants successfully challenged the plaintiff’s 60-day notice based on admissions made by the plaintiff that it had not conducted any testing to confirm that the listed chemical was present in each product. Here is a quick read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanium_dioxide Quote ...Generally, it is sourced from ilmenite, rutile and anatase. It has a wide range of applications, including paint, sunscreen and food coloring. When used as a food coloring, it has E number E171. World PRODUCTION in 2014 exceeded 9 million metric tons.[4][5][6] It has been estimated that titanium dioxide is used in two-thirds of all pigments, and the oxide has been valued at $13.2 billion.[7]So it's used in pigments. The explains why inkjet printers get the Prop. 65 warning. Now look at this Amazon link: California Proposition 65 Warning Labels So if you sell anything in California with that compound, you have label it! GAG me with a spoon! |

Solve : How To Detect Counterfeit Drugs? |
Answer» Off topic. Not a computer issue. A group of chemists from St. MARY's College in Indiana and Notre Dame has gotten into the detective game, too. Its convenient and still-unnamed product—a lab on a piece of paper the size of a business card—directly detects a drug's ingredients.https://www.scidev.net/global/medicine/news/innovation-for-fake-malaria-drugs-test.html Can anybody here help me with this search? I want to know who sells the paper test cards.Interesting that a litmus paper method is used. Getting drugs through a pharmacy you shouldn't have this worry. Quality control should keep these out as for the pharmacy doesnt just get their supplies through ebay etc. If getting drugs online I would be really worried about fakes or knock offs that MIGHT not be that safe. Biggest thing with this litmus paper test approach is that... you would need a comparison list/book of what values should be measured on each of the 12 strips to know what your looking at, so the litmus alone is worthless unless you know what to look for for your specific prescription. Other issue is that to test you have to waste a pill. What if the PILLS in a bottle were a mix of real and fakes. You test a real one and assume the rest of the bottle is good is the worse case scenario vs testing and finding a fake and throwing away some good ones among the bad ones. Couldn't agree more...Thank you for letting me introduce a controversial topic. The issue is not just mail-order drugs and *censored*. I have resewn to believe that local drug stores are selling fake drugs that are important to the hearth and well-being of myself and my family. Too often the drugs stores here sell pills in unsealed bottles. There is no sure way to verify the pills are genuine. One would think that they would not be allowed to sell crucial prescription dug from a bulk supplier. About half of the pills I take are not sealed in a bottle from the manufacture. Strange as it seems, over the counter drugs are sold in sealed bottles I was hoping to find the company that makes the 'litmus' test for drugs. That way I would have some way to convince my doctor there is a problem with the local drug stores. And I do not even know if the test paper can be sold to a layman. Maybe it is forbidden. Anyway, this issue is a very serious social problem. This link below only hints at the problem. It is about morphine and like drugs. https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm593602.htm That link is old, but still an issue. The link below is about Generic Metformin, often given to Diabetes patients. https://www.diabetesselfmanagement.com/blog/generic-metformin-benefits-risks/ The Metformin I get comes in an unsealed bottle and I have no way of knowing if they gave me good or bad pills. No certifiable label from the maker. Thanks for letting me post. Prescription drugs are by definition not "sealed" in bottles because they are literally dispensed into containers and labelled based on the prescription. That's literally part of the pharmacist's job. Sometimes they even compound tablets from powders on-site. Here's a question: Let's say yo get this test paper and it says there is NOTHING wrong with the drugs. Will you accept that, or just assume "It goes deeper than I thought!" Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 22, 2018, 01:15:47 PM Yes. I need some assurance the drug store is giving me what the doctor ordered. Somebody proposed prescription pills ought to have RFID chips. I think that is overkill. However, this does illustrate he need for some safeguard to identify the use of prescription drugs . In this case the patient is the suspect. https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm584933.htm Quote The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved the first drug in the U.S. with a digital ingestion tracking system. Abilify MyCite (aripiprazole tablets with sensor) has an ingestible sensor embedded in the pill that records that the medication was taken. The product is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, acute treatment of manic and mixed episodes ASSOCIATED with bipolar I disorder and for use as an add-on treatment for depression in adults. So far I am not at that point. If you are anywhere in North America outside of Mexico the drugs being issued by a liscensed pharmacist are legit and you have zero worries...their reputation and careers are on the line ...why would they risk it ? ? Unless you have become a truther and believe every conspiracy thats out there...is that what this is about ? ? Quote from: patio on April 22, 2018, 02:32:20 PM ...why would they risk it ? ? That's a good question, but for example (crazy, right!?) Code: [Select]https://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/ucm366985.htm And anyway, there are like at least three sides to this thing; if it can be presented in groups and there (surely, ‘Don’t Call Me Shirley’) may be more, please feel free to add:
Second (2), we have what everybody always talks about... Various, various-level-of-dangerous, drugs - including "performance enhancers", for students and such. These may be non-approved, as well. Example article following: Doctors warn new FDA-approved painkiller is deadly dangerous Code: [Select]https://www.rt.com/usa/new-painkiller-deadly-dangerous-260/ And (3) finally, again an RT link, www.rt.com/news/403972-antibiotics-shortage-pharmaceuticals-who/ which comes with a warning from the WHO (World Health Organization) and 'a “serious lack” of new antibiotics', for various (& numerous) reasons that include simple use and (also!) abuse; really, too many to even get into. So, we can see that it's a complex, multi-faceted, issue - actually, a myriad of issues which have the potential to upset human population on Earth, in many instances. A good topic, great post, thank you! ^^ ‘Don’t Call Me Shirley’ Code: [Select]https://www.vulture.com/2016/01/airplane-dont-call-me-shirley.html Code: [Select]https://www.cbsnews.com/news/leslie-nielsen-best-airplane-quotes-and-naked-gun-one-liners/=) |

Solve : The MoviePass Economy? |
Answer» This title does not make sense. But, in view of some things that have come, it does not matter. Consider: A computer under $100 that out performs the $1200 model twisty years ago. And it becomes a INSTANT success and makes a big profit. Something like a small RESTAURANT the sells coffe for $5 a cup and becomes a profitable franchise. The overpriced coffee becomes what people want. Retailers find they have to complete with a store that sells everything for $1. You get a free credit card that gives you cash back for every purchase. So the economy is crazy. What next? Here is a toughie-in-cheek essay by By Kevin Roose on nytimes.com The Entire Economy Is MoviePass Now. Enjoy It While You Can. Quote I’ve got a great idea for a start-up. Want to hear the pitch? For the full story.... https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/16/technology/moviepass-economy-startups.html Do you have a crazy New Economy Story?Movie Pass is broke now! They have to borrow money to even pay for movies going. Meanwhile AMC is doing the same thing but for $20 a month and only 3 movies a week. The idea is that you build out your own little ecosystem and customerbase by heavily subsidizing the cost of your "product". Eventually, you either: -Run out of money, and deploy your golden parachute. -Monetize your customer base by offering paid services or increasing the price of your base services slowly over time while adding new "features" to justify the price increase to customers. Your large customer base means if done right you'll only make a minority mad and stop using your product and be able to rake it in. -Another company buys you out in order to acquire your ecosystem. Also found This Security filing regarding MoviePass in particular. |

It will be for troubleshooting PoS systems for clients. This is a good place to ask. Check back here often to see who responds Get STARTED with Google GroupsSorry I can not help. When I worked in retail they still had cash registers. Quote from: EndOfForever on July 26, 2018, 10:59:30 PM It will be for troubleshooting PoS systems for clients. My Job actually involves writing Point of Sale and Inventory Management/Reservation Management software for Marina's, and since it's a small company I often get tasked to deal with support issues. In fact, coincidence of coincidence, my task for the last month or so has been a rework of our primary POS front-end to remove some limitations. But, that said, I don't even know where to begin with giving "advice" on the matter. Particularly since it SOUNDS like if you are in a call center you are going to be far REMOVED from other levels of support and possibly involve a script. It's all going to depend heavily on the specific software products for which you will be providing support. Most software has "known issues" or their own diagnostic steps that you would want to take beyond just general tasks. |

Solve : Make an adjustable small power supply.? |
Answer» If you like DIY, you might want a small adjustable power supply. If you need more amperage a heavier din rail power supplies would be needed, and hopefully one with passive cooling and voltage regulator mounted to a heat sink to avoid melt down of the VRM. A power supply converts alternating current from the outlet on the wall into direct current. There are several ways to do this. We are going to look at one of the simplest, but also most illustrative. Electricity passes through several stages in a voltage regulator type power supply like this one, or like the common wall-wart. The ways in which it is altered by each stage are explained. Re-read Dave's comments above...already explained. To clarify, the device I mentioned is very suitable for small battery powered projects. It is not intended for direct conversion of power from the mains. The data sheet shows it works well with 12 volt input and delivers output good for a smartphone or USB device. For the price, one could not build anything from basic components with the stability and power rating of this device. Fir example, using a legacy LM7805 would only give 2.5 watts and would need heat sink. Of course, using a 7805 would be a very MINIMALIST project. And using a LM7805 would mark yh0ou as an old school DIY person and might cause a time warp if you put it in your rocket ship. |

Solve : Why are fantasy RPG games popular?? |
Answer» A new Dragon Age GAME was announced a few days ago, and I was wondering, what makes medieval RPGs games so popular? the game developers being afraid of trying SOMETHING new because it could turn out to be a failure. Okay, I understand that, but it's just frustrating to see the same fantasy RPGs with the same common elements being slightly altered and sold. I won't mind seeing a different type of RPG, for EXAMPLE, a spy RPG. There was one along TIME ago, from Red Storm Entertainment, called Shadow Watch, the graphics were simple, and the game play was easy to understand, but it wasn't all that popular. Not long after RSE became part of Ubisoft. Do you think we'll see the end of medieval RPGs being popular anytime soon? |

Solve : Lost horde of cryptocurrency. What?? |
Answer» This was placed in 'other' because it is not directly related to our computers. Here is a quote from an item in my e-mail box. One of the BEST features of Bitcoin is its ability to be stored offline on LOCAL hardware — so called, “cold storage.” Having a cryptocurrency “wallet” on a hard drive or flash drive means it is protected from being stolen online, but if you lose access to that device, those coins are also lost forever. That’s where the majority of the estimated lost horde of cryptocurrency has gone, with many early miners and investors misplacing the currency before it was ever worth anything. Is this for real? Are people going to lose billions because of some kind of flaw in what is called 'cryptocurrency ' ? That is not even a real word. Still, the implication is that criminals might not just steal r money, they might mess up the system so bad that money will be forever lost. Is that true? Is this anything to worry about? Here is an article that is snot directly related, but the implication is also grime. Cyber Crime Costs Projected To Reach $2 Trillion by 2019 The above is form Forbes, Jan 17, 2016 Here is a quick look: Quote Three years ago, the The Wall Street JOURNAL estimated that the cost of cyber crime in the U.S. was approximately $100 billion. The estimate disputed other reports which pegged the numbers by as much as ten times higher.Do you care? Do you own a small business? Do you use the internet to handle money?People lost millions...Yes. However if you think of the concept they never actually had anything to begin with. Quote from: patio on January 29, 2018, 12:32:36 PM People lost millions...Yes.Right. How can you lose what you never had? Quote from an item in my e-mail box.it was spam. Quote Is this for real? Are people going to lose billions because of some kind of flaw in what is called 'cryptocurrency ' ? That is not even a real word.Cryptocurrency is a "real word" in that it describes a digital currency which is "regulated" by cryptographic techniques to manage "generation" of currency units as well as track transactions. "Mining" such a currency is done by solving relatively arbitrary cryptographic problems in a "Blockchain" to be rewarded with tidbits of the currency. That information can be stored on a hard drive or flash drive and yes that information can be lost. You can copy it and make backups of it like anything else though. Cryptocurrency isn't really related to cybercrime, in t hat it is not itself in any way criminal, though it is definitely associated with illicit purchases (ironic, given that they inherently have purchase tracking, so it's really just a case of keeping your crypto identity anonymous. There is also the fact that when you plot out the "investors" in a currency, most cryptocurrencies have a suspiciously triangle-like appearance, not unlike a pyramid... Early investors in a currency stand to gain the most and there are dwindling returns for all LATER "investors" who really just funnel their purchase funds into the "real" wallets of earlier people cashing out.Personally i think they are nothing but a pyramid scheme... |

Solve : Way out: Stephen Hawking's Wild Fears? |
Answer» Hey! this is off topic. Off Topic. Prof Hawking said the action could put Earth onto a path that turns it into a hothouse planet like Venus. I think Alarmist doomsaying like this does damage to efforts to change our industry and work towards cleaner energy sources, particularly when it's simply not true. Consider where the Carbon emissions we are putting in the atmosphere are coming from. Oil and Coal, which come from plants and animals from millions of YEARS ago who died before there was life that could digest and process things like cellulose. Those plants and animals took that CO2 out of the atmosphere to begin with, during a time of much warmer temperatures. So, realistically, even if we put it All back, we'd just be looking at the same habitable biosphere that was present millions of years ago. The problem is that none of the current life on Earth would be suitable for those conditions, and the change wouldn't occur over millions of years, it is currently happening and has happened over the span of the last few centuries due to industrialization. It is why many ecosystems are already starting to face problems due to changing climates. Fearmongering with blatantly false, alarmist nonsense just isn't a good idea because either people decide "well, what's the point, it's futile" or they discover it's bollocks and dismiss the entire concept as some elaborate ruse. An interesting sidebar- Both Venus and Mars are within the "Habitable zone" around the SUN. It is theorized, based on some of the surface formations that Venus may have had a biosphere similar to Earth a few billion years ago. It's closer proximity to the sun however made it far more susceptible to the Sun's aging process- As Stars age, they burn hotter- so eventually the heat Venus received from the sun was enough to cause a runaway greenhouse effect. Earth is expected to suffer a similar fate to Venus eventually. Though it is expected to be a lifeless, dry desert planet for a few hundred million years before that happens. Current models put the start of the process which turns it into an arid wasteland at around 700 million years from now. Perhaps ironically, that process is started by the increasing solar energy increasing chemical reaction rates for forming carbonates fast enough to reduce CO2 levels to a level unable to sustain photosynthesis. Back to the original topic, though- I'm more privvy to the model found in Asimov's Short story The Feeling of Power. I don't think AI will realistically replace people except in the sense of doing more work- sort of in the sense that computers have replaced Human calculators, such as the employ of women who used to be required at observatories for crunching data- but rather instead of replacing people we will grow increasingly more dependent on them; something which, I'd argue, we are already seeing occur. Not a bad thing in and of itself, but as Carl Sagan pointed out, we are becoming increasingly more dependent on computers while on AVERAGE people are becoming less familiar and aware of how they work. The short story is sort of a "end-game" to that thought process. |

Solve : News about Bill Gates? |
Answer» Maybe not earth shaking news, but it is notable. Interstate 10 (I-10) is the southernmost cross-country interstate highway in the American Interstate Highway System. If you want to see videos of Bill Gates and other rich people, look here: http://abcnews.go.com/topics/business/technology/bill-gates.htm Now here is the part that gets passed over. Quote The Microsoft co-founder said Monday that the donation to the Dementia Discovery Fund is personal and not through his charitable foundation.Source: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/bill-gates-50-million-combat-alzheimers-51116689 Bill has done a lot of good stuff with the foundations and efforts he's focused on in the last few decades since no longer taking an active ROLE in Microsoft. I don't really think a lot of the more specific details are typically newsworthy on their own, though? And it seems you agree since you tossed a number of different pieces of information as one topic here. As earth shattering as your link to a Search result page is, I think this is just a smokescreen for the real issues facing the world. Over the eons one of Man's primary advantages over Avian-kind has been our ability to read and write. Except for before we would read and write, at which time our main advantage over birds was certainly our opposable thumbs and higher brain capacity. Though I suppose birds can fly, too, not sure where that falls. Anyway, my point is, All birds are illiterate, and that is why we can so easily spread our anti-bird propaganda around the world. Have you ever seen a Chicken hired for a job? No, of course not, they don't EVEN wear clothes, it just wouldn't be appropriate. The only birds through recorded history that humans have had on payroll were actually spies who enlisted during the Emu wars. An entire Australian platoon consisted of Emus but they would have never been hired if it wasn't for their cunning disguises. Perhaps birds are held back by their inability to read the classifieds or use the Internet. Or maybe it's their inability to do crosswords and solve more sophisticated LOGIC problems. Anyway, As you can see in my first link- oversized birds are learning to read. 1,820,000 results for the query "News about oversized birds learning to read" almost 2 million results can't be wrong. So please, people. Stop exposing birds to our written languages. Once birds learn to read, what do we have left? They'll take over the world with their ability to read and fly. Except flightless birds, who will probably still be upgraded in society and I'm sure the Bird congress will put in place a law regarding flightless bird access, perhaps built upon the structures of the ancient bipedal race who underestimated birds. Birds used to be dinosaurs, you know. Remember what it took to stop dinosaurs from being dominant on the Earth? A massive cataclysm, which is thought to be an asteroid. Let's not repeat the mistake of the Mesozoic. Birds must not be allowed to read. Our entire existence depends upon it. And you know what? I think it's all falling into place. The puzzles of the pieces are falling down the side of the pyramid that fits perfectly in the hole in the peg of this mystery. The monkey claw is GETTING stuck in the lint trap of the enigma... One common conspiracy theory is that the worlds leaders are actually lizards. of course, that's a preposterous and idiotic theory. But what if they were really Birds? You saw in the picture- they are almost indistinguishable from a human when they wear a hat. I mean, Who even knows if that was an Emu or Michael Douglas? Nobody. Nobody knows. I mean Ornithologists wasted almost an entire month trying to study the habits of a new species of bird only to find out it was Gail Platt. And if they can't tell the difference- who can? |

Solve : California Wild Fires. Worst ever.? |
Answer» You must have already heard. These fires are the worst ever. The bigest must be the one that goes from Santa Rosa to Colusa. Th city of Santa Rosa was very badlu burnt. A K-mart was destroyed. A Hotel. An entire residential area. Photo attated. (Photo copied for TV station KGO.) Can a automobile be made fireproof?Nice try Mr. Mobster! Glad to see you are safe. Quote Can a automobile be made fireproof? Some have reported that an automobiles would catch fire even as the owner was driving out of the danger zone. Sometimes the fire wold bridge a highway and people had no choice but to drive through the inferno. I can no imagine how much heat it takes to ignite a moving vehicle. Is the paint flammable? In this video the cars were not moving. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=wild+fire+burns+automobiles&view=detail&mid=A2A73270D749BAED9812A2A73270D749BAED9812&FORM=VIRE The video is hard to comprehend. It lots like something that could not happen. but it did. No two or three, but a bunch of cars catch fire on a freeway. Reports say about six cars burst into flames. Drivers left their cars. This reports says 20 vehicles. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2015/07/18/freeway-reopens-after-fire-burns-20-vehicles/30342793/ Quote LOS ANGELES - California motorists saw both fire and rain within 24 hours on a key artery that Friday seemed straight out of a hellish Hollywood movie. The red stuff they dump from the aircraft is a mixture that helps retard flames. EDIT: LOOKING closer at the videos, it looks like the vehicles started to burn from the inside. So it was not the paint that caught on file. Maybe the materiel used in the interior.Anyway, the efforts to put out the vehicle fires were not successful.I heard this on the radio a few weeks ago. Facts may be a bit fuzzy from then.... Part of the problem with wildfires is that the government classifies some state/national parks as wilderness areas and refuses to clean up overgrowth and they often just let fires burn in these areas. The chetco bar fire in southern Oregon was spotted shortly after it started and they made a conscious decision to let it burn. It wasn't until two weeks later, when it was starting to threaten structures and communities that the government decided to look into it, and by that time it was enormous and impossible to control. Also, if a fire starts on private land, and the owner didn't do anything to fireproof their property before the fire started, they can be sued by the government if it spreads and damages government owned land, but if the roles are reversed, a property owner can't sue the government. Now that's screwed up! The government really needs to start managing their forests and wilderness areas instead of just letting them go. Thousands of acres and millions of trees are completely wiped out because they wouldn't cut down a few trees and trim overgrowth. Edit: Did you notice these videos were from 2015?Yes the automobile videos I cried were from 2015 and were unusually graphic. I posted these because they were live-cation videos of helicopters trying to put out the burning cars on a major hi-way in LA. The recent fires also had reports of cars bursting into flamers. and the drives had to leave them behind. Over the years Californian has had severe wildfires and they are not getting less. One would thin that by now government agencies would have an effective plan to deal with wildfires. It is one thing to let a fire burn in a wilderness area, *censored* another thing to allow it to burn houses, cars and property in the suburbs. You would think they would keep the area around a highway free of dry grass. Apparently this still don't practice prevention. The say prevention is better than a cure. That surely applies to wildfires. Warnings about the dangers of wildfires have been given for years, but it is when it happens that people take note of how dangerous they are. About cars on files. Automobile fires a very common. But it is surprising that a wildfire can make a car ignite. Or so I thought. One would think that the makers would do more to insure that automobiles will not just burst into flames when exposed to high temperatures. Apparently not. News reports are now being sent out that the current problem in California is not yet over. Fires are still active and there are not enough men to control the rifles. Here is a recent report: http://metro.co.uk/2017/10/10/wildfires-raging-across-california-kill-at-least-10-and-destroy-thousands-of-homes-6988702/ The above link has a set of recent photos to the damage in California. Even Disney Land was in the danger area. It is closed, of course. EDIT: It is not rocket science. See here: VEGETATION CONTROL FOR SAFETY Quote About cars on files. Automobile fires a very common. But it is surprising that a wildfire can make a car ignite. Or so I thought. You have any concept how hot those fires get ? ? You have any idea what it would cost the car industry to protect against those extreme temps ? ? Get a grip. Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 12, 2017, 02:17:05 PM One would think that the makers would do more to insure that automobiles will not just burst into flames when exposed to high temperatures. As Patio says, the radiant heat from nearby wildfires can be incredibly high. We're talking about wildfires that are hot enough that the heat from one side ignites brush on the other side of a 8-lane highway without a grassy median and which are hot enough to cause severe burns to people within quite a large RADIUS. Considering that high summer temperatures can cause car engines to burst into flames on it's own, it should be no surprise that you cannot safely drive a car through a literal inferno. Quote One would think that the makers would do more to insure that automobiles will not just burst into flames when exposed to high temperatures. What kind of protections are possible? cars literally run by burning a flammable liquid. You drive a car through a wildfire and that flammable liquid does this thing where it catches fire- Not exactly a surprise. I don't know what sort of protections you think should be in place but they aren't going to be economical. I mean even if you fireproof the engine block and the fuel lines, maybe the car survives but that doesn't really accomplish much when the occupants are barbecued alive. And fireproofing the cabin itself and now you don't have a car you have a tank. Safety concerns with vehicles primarily concern the countless hundreds of thousands or millions of car accidents every year, not the comparatively small amount of vehicles which, for some inexplicable reason, catch fire when they are driven through one. Besides, if we're going to fireproof the cars, how about we go right ahead and just fireproof the trees and the brush too? Points well made; Patio and BC. It is just hard to imagine that much heat outdoors. How strange. It is now getting cooler here in California and we have to start using the furnace at night. Here is a chart of melting temperatures. Melting temperatures of some common metals and alloys Steel is r the highest. Cars have a lot of steel, but they do melt in wildfires. The melting points is about 1500 C or 2700 F. So yes, getting a fire proof car is just too hard to do. Some fires are still active in California and some state highways are either closed or subject to closure by local police. Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 12, 2017, 08:42:01 PM It is just hard to imagine that much heat outdoors. Definitely. One might more typically think of the temperatures near a campfire or bonfire, which is far less than when say an entire forest is burning around you. Some comparisons to historical wildfires are of interest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wildfires The list has major world fires of the prior century. And a few back in the late 1800's. A number of the worst fires have been after the year 2000. Quote 2000 fires in Southern Europe in July 2000 consumed forests and buildings in southern France, parts of Iberia, Corsica, and most of Italy including the southern part during the heatwave dominating southern Europe with 40 to 45 °C temperatures caused the phenomena.Air at 45 C is 113F. That is very, very hot indeed. Therefore, to say that this has never happened before is not accurate. However, there might be a pattern of server weather and fires more often that in other times. Also ,the growth of distribution of populations is a factor.Take for example the greater Los Angeles area, which has seen rapid growth from the when Disneyland was built. You can Google 'Worst Wildfires Ever' and get reports that point to the recent Californian fires as being most unusual. |

Solve : 12V -> 5V 1A using L7805CV? |
Answer» I need to convert 12V (may vary from 11 to 14V - motorbike battery) to 5V 1A (microusb phone charger). I have the L7805CV positive voltage regulator. here is the date sheet of l7805cv Which capacitors I need to connect at input and output? Any other stuff is needed? (I need the whole thing to be smallest possible) I'd use this circuit attached to protect from reverse polarity by use of that diode. The Voltage regulator I would mount to a passive heatsink. Thats why it has that metal backing with the hole through it is to be mounted to a heatsink to draw heat away. A small drop of thermal compound the same used for CPU and GPU heatsinks on computers and this mounted to the flat of a flat unpainted bare metal surface for BEST results. Not quite sure why making as small as possible is a concern as for there is not much to this circuit anyways with just a diode, voltage regulator, and 2 capacitors. Biggest concern is you said its for a motorbike battery, so I am assuming this is for a motorcycle that is exposed to moisture from rain, puddles and all that. You would then want this PCB to be protected from the weather. One option is to places it into a box of some sort and then pour silicone EPOXY all around it to encase the circuit board in a barrier from water. BUT that voltage regulator is going to produce heat and so you need to have the metal that its mounted to exposed and not encased in silicone gel. The silicone gel is the same as used for caulking etc, where it takes about 24 HOURS or so to set. On some other projects I had that I wanted water proof I used a 2-part epoxy that mixes evenly with a syringe. I made use of a empty clear TIC-TAC container which had the opening where TIC-TACs normally exit for a USB cable to pass through. I popped this piece out threaded my USB cable through TIC-TAC hole and then soldered the 4 USB wires to my small PCB, and then placed the board into the clear TIC-TAC container and injected this 2 part epoxy into the TIC-TAC container, and then slid the white plastic TIC-TAC container top down the USB cord and snapped it back into the TIC-TAC container body and then the epoxy gave off heat as it was solidifying, then cooled. Now my device i made was protected from water from the length of wire all the way to device encapsulated inside the epoxy. You can get creative and reuse containers. One such container that comes to MIND for your application is an altoids container. Its a metal container that is sold with the mints. You could mount the voltage regulator to the bottom of the altoids case and use the entire metal surface of it as a passive cooler. The surface area of the altoid case should be plenty to keep that voltage regulator cool especially with the top lid on it as well to draw heat away. Use of a long screw to mount the voltage regulator to the bottom flat of the tin with thermal compound, and a nut tight on the outside bottom of your tin. The extra length of screw used to mount it to your motorbike with 2 washers and a nut at the final end of it were ever it mounts. 1 long screw should be plenty since its light and nothing should bump it to snap that screw off. The screw also will act as a passive heatsink to whatever metal surface that is mounted and tightened to. The heat produced will be determined by the draw through it, the closer you get to maximum current draw, the hotter its going to get. If you go with altoid case, I would pour silicone gel caulk into it once your sure your circuit was successful. You will want to use like an old credit card or something on the bottom of your PCB to avoid the solder connections from shorting out on the altoid case. I have used expired credit cards for stuff like that insulators. As long as its the older cards that dont have any metal on them to short to that is. The newer credit cards with embedded chips have a few electrical connections on them that could short a circuit if used, but older plastic credit cards or store cards etc they make good insulators. I love to recycle and repurpose empty containers from stuff to save myself from having to buy cases for projects. Seems as though candy containers work awesome for small container needs. Lastly, make sure your not going to pull greater than 1.5 amps through this. Some phones are fine on 1.5 amps, but such as if you have a tablet that charges off of a microUSB it could pull around 2.5 amps. If you have a wall charger for this phone and it says 1.5 amps or less on it for the 5V then you should be fine, but if its a greater draw then you will need a drop down voltage regulation circuit that can handle the current demands of the battery charge. One thing I would also consider is why reinvent the wheel. If you can pick up a car charger for your phone then simply mount a fused linked cigarette lighter plug to motorbike somewhere and use that for 12volt accessory power direct tap from battery ( with a 3 amp fuse in series with it in case you ever have a short circuit. ) https://www.delcity.net/store/Auxiliary-12-Volt-Power-Socket/p_801417.h_801418.r_IF1003?mkwid=sbFzvw7JK&crid=38094426869&mp_kw=&mp_mt=&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIk-7R34TP1AIVxIuzCh3ruwBnEAQYASABEgLpZvD_BwE You then can power all sorts of stuff through this 12VDC aux outlet and greater than just 1.5 amps. Also if moisture is ever a problem the worst case scenario is having to replace the aux outlet. I am assuming your going to only be charging when good weather. The phone charger is also removed from bike when not needed to be plugged into it which will protect from draining your battery dead! One thing to consider is you will want to have a switch or even safer a relay to only have that 5 volt power working when the bike is running as for even with nothing plugged into the 5 volt side of that circuit, it has a continuous draw of a small amount of power that will drain a battery dead. Relay would tap into use of sensing a run state of the motorbike to energize the coil of relay which then energizes the 5 volt power circuit you need. If you go with the 12Volt aux outlet, you wouldnt need this switch or relay and as long as you remove whatever is plugged into it then your battery wont drain from it. [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Plenty of gas stations and Grocery stores have membership rewards cards...they contain no metal...Is this a DIY project? The 780X type regulators are for use as replacement on very old equipment. They are not suited for new designs, unless extreme simplicity is the objective. No capacitors are needed. No fuse is needed. No diode needed. Simple heat sink recommended. Quote No fuse is needed. I have to make a statement about this. I greatly disagree. I'd say that's dangerous to suggest someone making a circuit without a fused link. All projects no matter what they are should have a fuse that will pop to avoid an electrical fire if something went wrong. Fused link should be rated properly to carry the load down stream, and pop before wires glow and as close to the power source as possible so that if the Positive wire with 12VDC gets pinched or chaffed shorting to the frame it doesnt turn the motorcycle into a toaster oven with a 18GA heating element between your legs. I still like the use of a diode to protect from accidental reverse polarity, as well as a capacitor that will smooth out the power in case of noise from the power source. Capacitors if placed at the source as well as the output also will cushion the output side and assist if there was any spikes in current draw so that the voltage regulator functions more smoothly without quick dips or spikes or ripple. These parts are small and cheap and no need for greater simplicity and rely solely on the voltage regulator alone. Could it work on just the voltage regular alone.. yes... but its not a design that I would go with. Id rather spend the extra $3 and have some protection with fused link, diode, and CAPS with the fused link with fuse costing about $2.50 USD of that $3.The data sheet shows the 780x is safe up to about 40 volts DC. https://www.sparkfun.com/datasheets/Components/LM7805.pdf That is way above the 14 vile limit in a motorbike. My own experience with the 780x is the blow to open circuit when distressed. An a vehicle should already have fuses for accessorizes. Quote An a vehicle should already have fuses for accessorizes. A phone doesn't...re=read the Post. Quote from: patio on September 29, 2017, 03:02:09 PM A phone doesn't...re=read the Post. You are right, here wants to use a motorcycle battery. Now then, What would the fuse do? The 7805 has a higher level of integrity. But f he wants a fuse, that is OK. Wow.Might be the OP has gone. For what it is worth, the main reason for using fuses is to reduce fire and property damage. An to help prevent harm to prole. A common fable is that a fuse will protect delicate equipment. It only prevents the equipment for catching fire. The fuse commonly used is a 3AG and is often used in electronic equipment in addition to use in automobiles. Fuses that can act fast enough to prevent electrical damage to a smartphone, tablet, computer, radio or similar device and hard to find. Most fusee only react to thermal overload and can take several milliseconds to respond to excessive current flow. Here is a spec sheet: http://www.mouser.com/ds/2/643/3AG-1136042.pdf I have copied part if the PDF and placed it below. Another point often overlooked is the resistance of the fuse itself. The resistance can have some impact on the functionality of the circuit. A fuse that is rated at 50MA might have a voltage drop of 3 volts, depending on the specific type of fuse you want. A fuse with a high resistance may have r fast blow times. But the voltage drop may interfere with reliable power delivery. So the current practice is to put protection built into the device you are using. The smartphone, radio, camera or whatever device you have should protect itself. The fuse is sometimes required to satisfy the insurance companies. Put do not pretend that a fuse will protect you better than the device does by itself. BTW: Obviously some laptop computer should have had fuse protection. However, once a lithium-ion battery starts to burn, you can not stop it with a fuse. The point being made: Fuses are required due to meet legacy rules by agencies. But they have little ability to prevent damage from a moderate over voltage condition. See attachment. Olen type of 3AG fuse for 400 ma with hold at 400 MA for 5 hours. At 800 MA it might take 5 seconds to blow. Not good enough to prevent permanent damage to an electronic circuit. [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]My point in fuse was so that if the 12V + wire ever made its way to chassis ground it would pop a fuse close to + battery post. The regulator would smoke long before a fuse would blow but damage self contained within the enclosure of the 5 volt regulator box. On modern cars they moved the fuse box for main heavy duty fuses into engine compartment close to the battery. In cars years ago you just had the fuse panel under the dash. These days you will find both as well as relays in a moisture resistant box nearest to the battery. Thats why I suggest an insulated enclosure fuse such as the weather resistant 2 piece push and turn with has an o-ring to keep water out of the fuse compartment or another water resistant fuse holder nearest to the + battery post so that if the wire going to this regulator box gets chaffed or pinched or through heat or vibration somehow the conductor makes its way to the frame or another metal object connected to the frame which is used as a return leg, that this fuse nearest to the battery will pop and they dont have a red hot wire burning the inside of their groin etc. Its a much safer design to have the fuse nearest to the + battery post vs trusting a length of wire leading to a box never to short to common return ( aka Negative post ). Point made. The fuse is t o prevent fire and burns. BTW, the OP did not say much about his smartphone. The 7805 is a good regulator, but it is not a battery changing circulate. So it is not clear if it will change the smartphone. They make cheap 12 volt to smartphone adapters that claim to properly change the battery. I don't have at hand any specs on how they work. But when the battery goes above 4.7 bolts, the charge circuit should turn off. The 7805 regulator will keep giving out 5 volts. He might want to do some testing with voltmeter and Milli amp meter to see how well it works. Here is a reference that indicates you should not charge a small cell for more that 2 or 3 hours unless you have a smart charger. http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries Quote The Li ion charger is a voltage-limiting device that has similarities to the lead acid system. The differences with Li-ion lie in a higher voltage per cell, tighter voltage tolerances and the absence of trickle or float charge at full charge. While lead acid offers some flexibility in terms of voltage cut off, manufacturers of Li-ion cells are very strict on the correct setting because Li-ion cannot accept overcharge. The so-called miracle charger that promises to prolong battery life and gain extra capacity with pulses and other gimmicks does not exist. Li-ion is a “clean” system and only takes what it can absorb.I read that to mean do not go above the 4.3 volt point of the battery used in most smartphones. The above links warns about trying to "top off" a lithium battery. They don't work that way. Myself... I'd add a 12V accessory/aka cigarette lighter plug. And use a car charger for phone. Just would then need a pouch for phone to tuck into and not fall out of. Just add a 3 amp fuse in series with the 12 V accessory outlet. They would want to pay more for the ones that have weatherproof cap to seal when not in use and not want to be using it in rain etc as for it would eat itself if wet operation and 12v phone charger likely also not weather resistant. Also... velcro wire tie strap to take extra slack in charge cord and secure it to bike so the front wheel doesnt eat your phone if cord gets snagged by front wheel and it yanks it all to eat it into the front wheel etc. Wire from battery tap to 12V accessory plug could be zip tied to frame in locations that dont exceed 120F, in areas that are hot the insulation can melt and short the wire to chassis and blow that 3amp fuse closest to the + battery post. The whole project is imho ridiculous...plus it appears he's been abducted...Can only hope abducted and not gone due to an electrical fire due to lack of fuse. |

Solve : I found 33 six-letter words with a simple rule.? |
Answer» Password Algorithm for Work-GROUP. There are 33 six-letter words - with Q & T - without E ACQUIT ASQUAT DIQUAT LOQUAT QANATS QINTAR QIVIUT QUAINT QUANTA QUANTS QUARTO QUARTS QUARTZ QUATCH QUBITS QUIGHT QUILTS QUINTA QUINTS QUIRTS QUISTS QUITCH QUOIST QUOITS QUOTAS QUOTHA QUOTUM SQUATS SQUINT SQUIRT SQUITS TALAQS TRANQS source: https://www.bestwordlist.com/edit.htm?/6letterwords.txt What do you want this. I don't know the technical term for this. You would use this when you company is hanging issue with passwords that are both safe and easy to recover. Each member of your work group takes a word from the list and adds four digits from a phone number. The rule 'six-letter words - with Q & T - without E' is known to the whole workup, so it can be reproduced later if needed. The combination of words and numbers are easy to remember. Now Kyoto have a limited word set and numbers that are known. This makes it possible for other members of the workup to guess the password of a member. You want that in case of a n emergency. But the rule is not reveled to the outside world. Therefore the like hood of a stranger getting the password in few attempts is very unlikely. Make other rules. Find one or two the workup can remember, but do not let others know. Use the link above to recover a list. Does anybody know what this Algorithm is called? Were did it originate?Interesting generator that allows exclusion of characters. Its too bad it doesnt also offer lower case in addition to upper case as well as symbols and numbers to be added to the mix. About 10 years ago I was messing a round with a random (game character) name generator for games, where I wanted a name to be generated and then decide to use that one or press run again to see what new combination is generated. I did this with PERL with the fact that FOR loops can count alpha to increment and decrement very easily. I basically populated an array with the contents of running from say AAAAAA to ZZZZZZ and a random generator to call to an array string/word element and display that if wanted to have a 6 letter word of same case. Thanks for the reply. My intent was not to make true random passwords. Instead, use real words taht can be remembered. :Part of the password problem is that people forget passwords. Unless there is some way that can recall what the word was. Use of real words make it mu ch easier for users to recall the password. A format once used was: ward symbol word The permutations get into the millions and would make it hard to break even with brute force password cracking. To prevent this, the application should havea feature that blocks attempts after five attempts. The block would stay on for on hour to stop the brute force crack. His is my point, and I think some agree, if the password is to hard, administrators will crate some kind of 'backdoor' to get into a lost account. Such a 'backdoor' defects the whole concept of security. The remedy is to have a simple algorithmic that can be used to recovery forgotten passwords. If the user can see a list of, Le's say, 50 possible passwords, he might recall which word he use. the 3 letter algorithm I gave earlier has over 17,000 permutations for the algorithm itself. Actually a lot more. I just can do that very quickly . The concept is that the easy to remember password can be more effective in security. Because the user can do his own recovery. Otherwise, the password reset thing is the flaw in current practice. I hope you understand what I am saying. This could be a hour lecture in a CLASSROOM. I've never been convinced of that "horse battery staple" style of password myself. The logic behind how long it would take to crack relies on a specific algorithm where the characters are the discrete elements that are changed. like trying to figure out a combination by trying 001, 002, 003, 004... But the only result is going to be new cracking algorithms that simply use dictionaries instead of letters. In that case, a three word password would be fairly straightforward to crack; Probably easier than say a randomly generated password. Limits on the number of attempts and lockouts most "hacks" occur when a database is hacked and the hashes are retrieved, at which point cracking the passwords is a case of trying to find something with the same HASH; the "profit" being that often people will use that same password for the e-mail and you can get all sorts of information that way, I presume. It's funny because this topic got me thinking of writing a password generator, somehow oblivious to the one I wrote some time ago. But that was for characters, so it might be interesting to have it use a dictionary file and generate a password from a selection of random dictionary words- perhaps with modifications to particular letters or adding a number to the start or end randomly, to add more entropy. and combat easy dictionary attacks. This is from dictation. Laugh if you must. Thanks for your reply, BC. Perhaps I need to back up a bit and explain why I got into this peculiar ideal. The point here is not just coming up with a password that's hard to guess. That is only part of the overall scenario. Data security has for major columns of support. The first pillar must be the e physical security. That means the equipment itself must be physically secure from anybody coming in and sneaking a peek at the computer hardware and having a chance to fiddle with. The second pillar must be personnel security. Only individuals who are trusted should be employed by the firm. Even the janitor needs to pass a security check. The third pillar of data security must be acceptable practices. Using one password for several different accounts should be considered for bid and practice. Instead, there could be a secret password table that is known to a few administrators and this password table could be used as long is it is a secret. The use of e-mail related passwords should be forbidden except for e-mail that is associated with a secure server. So the company would have to have its own e-mail system for its him ploy ease and the employees would never years their personal e-mail resources on the top companies computer. Such a list of acceptable and unacceptable practices is a key ingredient in data security. The fourth pillar of data security is coming up with a password scheme that cannot be easily broken, tampered or foiled or disrupted. The fact that a password is very hard to crack by brute force is not enough. There should be in place some mechanism to prevent brute force attack of it password protected service. Even if it password is very, very difficult, that is of no value if there is a backdoor mechanism that to go around the password. Now then, if we can agree that there are some four pillars of security we can say that the security level would be the product of the four pillars. Never assume that it would be the sum of four pillars. It doesn't work that way. When the maître of something is a product, it means that any of the values used in the product must not be zero. If just one of the four pillars of data security has a value near zero, then the end product will be near zero. It matters not that the other three pillars of security were very high. There is the issue. Somehow people seem to think that security is simply the sum of the pillars. That doesn't work you cannot make up for the deficiency in one area buying creasing or raising the bar in another area. Yet many people seem to think that all you have to do is make one or two of the security pillars very tall and then it won't matter that the others are short. I know this sounds kind of abstract, but this is the way you have to reason it out. It's not about the value one thing. It's about the value of a number of things, any one of which must be more VALUABLE than nothing. To put it another way, take the case of the first pillar. The physical security. It just anybody can Kim in and out at any time and fiddle with a company computer, then that pillar as a value of zero and sooner or later the company is going to be hacked no matter what kind of security levels they have in the other areas. Physical security has to be a very high level. But we can't say that it's more important than anything else. All four pillars are important. They all have to be at a high level to be effective. If just one of the four pillars is at a very low level or near zero, then the whole system is weak. Case in point. From time to time we hear about how big huge companies have had terrible data breaches. How can this be? Because they did not make sure that all the pillars of data security were in place and said that a high value. A common problem is a weakness in the security of personnel. They allow people with very poor security clearance to come in and out of the building. It could be a janitor, that pizza delivery guy, or somebody who claims to be a building inspector. Anybody who comes into the data center must have some kind of security clearance. Forget that and you might as well forget about data security. All right, now let's get back to the password thing. To prevent weaknesses in the password scheme, there must not be an easy way to get around the password. Very poorly designed password security systems are a weakness. A ell-designed system should not have a password reset or password recovery option. If everybody involved in the data security process has been well educated, nobody should ever forget their password. And even if they did forget it, there should be a way for them to recover the password from among their peers, not from some distant third party agency. That is why I was suggesting there should be a way for people to remember either their password or a password table that Ted can be recovered through some type of algorithm that is a secret known only to trusted employees. The number of simple algorithms for making clever passwords is somewhere in the tens of thousands or maybe even higher. The one I suggested was where you choose common dictionary words and specify the length of the word and certain letters that must be used inside the word. That will give you a small set of words that can be printed out and distributed to trusted employees inside the data center. Of course, that means that everybody who works inside the data center should have a very high level of security. If you have disloyal people inside your data center, no amount of password ingenuity is going to protect you from a data breach. On the other hand, if your employees are really well trusted people, and you know they are loyal, you could give them a table of passwords that can be used only for applications relating to the data center operations. This could be a published table of 100 acceptable passwords. That table must never, never be published to any outside agency. Is that too much to ask of your employees, I think not. This is perhaps longer than what I expected, but I wanted to make clear why I was using such a zany crazy idea. It's not really so crazy when you think about why it is that so many data breaches have taken place. It was not really because the passwords were weak. Almost always it's a case of something else being weak in the data security system. Of course, one should not be using passwords that are just too easy to guess such as: qwerty 123456 iamjesus kissmybut Those are just two simple to be effective. On the other hand, very complicated passwords do not make up for other deficiencies in the overall security system. End of Dictation. |

Solve : Use a Avator to improve your market. Huh?? |
Answer» Ignore this. That is what I was about to do until I saw the article was published at Hayward? What? A famous academic body telling people to pay attention to some kind of silly cartoons? I could not resist. It starts with a reference to thr virtual world of Second Life. Avatars aren’t the only personal creations in Second Life. Nearly everything in this world—which encompasses 50 virtual square miles and would take days to walk across, although you can save time by flying or by instantly teleporting yourself from one place to another—has been made by Second Life residents. Along with the thousands of eye-catching structures, physical landmarks, and interactive objects, these creations include less tangible things: virtual businesses, interest-based social groups, and scheduled events that RANGE from dance parties to celebrity book signings to boxing matches to yard sales. Here is the rest of it: Avatar-Based Marketing So, if I change my Avatar, - will I become more likable ? I have been hanging out on Second Life for a bunch of years.... For those who dont know what Second Life is, its pretty much a gathering of people from all around the world. There are zones and rules and security that can block people from zones or allow people into them. There are moderators who can teleport problem people out and keep people out by use of ban lines so the people cant come back to an area until the ban is lifted or the ban can be permanent. People have all sorts of interactive places and there are some clean places as well as some really off the wall places. You could see advertising in this virtual world for real places that you could go to irl ( in real life ) such as there is a church that has a schedule and people can attend mass as their avitar for example. There are movie theaters that play streaming video content that is of all ratings, some theaters are clean and play movies like The Jerk with Steve Martin for example and some of which are 18+ in the red light districts that there are multiples of there have that content. There are fun parks and someone reconstructed and coded up a Disney World there to which you can take a seat and go through the Haunted House and the Pirates Log Ride and watch the electric parade festival that happens at timed intervals from very creative artists and coders. Dancing is very common there and its more of a instead of having a bunch of people standing in a room doing nothing, their avitars get onto dance pads or dance balls some of which are marked by color for Blue = male and Pink = Female so that when dancing as a couple the female isnt carrying the man around in her arms as a male would do. There are no rules that restrict this so a female could carry a male avitar around dancing and cause some laughs. But in places like The Shelter, its a line of dance pads that strangers will generally get on and dance in a line together and chat in a open chat window, as well as you can also whisper each other privately was well if you found someone you wanted to chat with or they found you and didnt want everyone to know what was being chatted about. While at places most places have streaming radio or juke boxes as well as DJ's that go there and live it up as actual DJ's playing music by request as well as whatever they want to play. It makes for some fun times and sometimes funny times when a DJ messes up because they went to a SMOKE break and didnt get back in time to change the song etc or even worse the bathroom break irl in which the song ended and they come rushing back to get the music going again and usually state sorry and why making the whole room laugh. There are people there who want relationships, as well as people who just want quick gratification, as well as people who just want to socialize, as well as people who just like the thrill of exploring all the many places that others have created, additionally there are all sorts of avitar types and groups such as you can be a Vampire or a Lycan or a Hybrid and use the Bloodlines system and live in a castle with other people who live and act there as vampires with rules that may be lose but are generally strict. There are also clans in addition to groups. In clans the order is generally that others who have a status above yours calls the shots and they may require you to interact with them or your thrown out of the clan. There are clean clans and there are very very dark clans where what is illegal in in real life is fair game there and it can be a very scary place to someone getting mixed up with that group. Everything you can have in real life you can have there, I have muscle cars and a chopper motorcycle that I can give people rides in or on. I have a house there that i play a small amount of money rent to the SIM server landlord so that its my personal space, but you can be there without any property OWNERSHIP or without spending money renting. There are many things that are free, many places to get free items such as a new outfit or new hat or new boots, or new eyes, or new hair, or just about anything else you want to alter on your avitar. *There are even body parts that should be hidden behind clothing to pick from for males and females of various selections. In addition to what you can have in real life, there are some really interesting alien planets and places to visit like taking a space shuttle to the moon and you see earth going away and you land on moon and there are bug creatures that slowly come towards you and you feel like they are going to hurt you, but they dont kill you. You can fall from the highest point and hit the ground and bounce. Its like the matrix sort of in which you could even have a dodging bullets animation created and someone shooting at you. The only death in the game is for those who become part of Bloodlines, and thats only if you dont feed, but when you die as part of Bloodlines not feeding it just sets your stats to 0 which is DEAD, and so you then have to start all over again with Bloodlines or give up on it like I did and have Vampires and other people with HUDS that scan for life form types remind you that your dead even though your able to do everything that a living person can do on Second Life. HUDS are a script interface that interacts with Second Life and your account to be able to make quick changes to your avitar or environment as well as able to scan and detect what life forms are in rooms and their distance in which icons show for Human, Vampire, Lycan, Hybrid, and others such as souls that are lost in limbo because they were bitten and their soul taken by a vampire but by which the vampire died and the souls they had lost as a result of their death etc. Everything that is Good and EVIL in real life also exists in Second Life. There are great people on there to have conversations with as well as there are some really really screwed up people there. There are also GRIEFERS there and you have to worry about them. You dont leave your avitar unattended in strange places unless you want to come back to yourself and find that your avitar now cant move as your have been folded up like a box because they have scripts that can target others and make for an unpleasant experience there. As well as some that like to target people who are out having fun and keep spamming them with water balloons etc where your trying to have a nice walk with girlfriend and you have this guy that is throwing them at you and your girlfriend and you both are pretty much like ok lets teleport to some other place and hopefully they wont follow. Items there in addition to free can also cost money. Real Money, and some items are insanely expensive and people pay crazy money into it. They also have places that have chairs where if you sit in the chair for a set amount of time and arent kicked out by others you can get free stuff as well as chairs that have a letter above them and if your name starts with D which mine does, you take a seat in the chair and then it sounds like you hit the jackpot and the item that was being given away from free you get into your inventory, additionally if you see a ? its a wildcard and a free for all for anyone to sit down and get for free. They also have places with money trees and piggy banks where in order to draw traffic to places to get people to go to places they will have money trees where they randomly spawn real money called Linden and represented as $L .... 2500 Linden is worth about $10 USD it fluctuates on a market as people buy and sell it to buy stuff in Second Life or sell it back to convert it back to Real Money. Gift Cards and PrePaid Credit Cards cant be used to buy this virtual currency because there are restrictions on converting real money into virtual currency using prepaid cards to try to put a stop on money laundering etc. Ok after sharing all that... more could be said but not going to write a book... Avitar Appearance is the same as IRL Appearance... If someone doesnt look like the type of person you would want to associate with, then you wont. But if they look pleasant etc then they would more likely draw attention to themselves, ESPECIALLY IF FEMALE The default appearances that they give you are kind of boring. I ended up spending about $5 to create the appearance that i wanted by buying special items that couldnt be acquired for free, while I also have other items that are free. In the 8 years I have been on Second Life I have spent probably around $200 USD between rent, and buying items like muscle cars and chopper motorcycles and some avitar appearance stuff when I wanted to look more real and there was a skin that made me look less of a cartoon and more realistic. There are MESH items that even make hair very detailed and flow with movement, and there are AO's with affect how your avitar behaves with body language. Mine is using a Dangerous AO which gives my 6'2" biker dude with leather and long hair, chains and tattoos have a cool and strong man walk. This appearance seems to get lots of attention from the ladies and I already have one I'm committed to there. Sadly though there is about a ratio of 10 to 1 for female avatar objects to mens. Mens clothing is not as much where as females have a 10x greater variety of clothing accessories and skins and appearances. You can look like almost unlimited selection of appearances from human, to animal, to a mix of species, or alien, or take on a skeleton appearance or ghost, or pirate, Pac Man, cartoon characters, and more. To be more likeable it really comes down to what kind of person you are and what type of people and interaction your interested in. If you can hold a conversation with others and gain interest in whatever your talking about then you dont really need avitar that grabs attention. But for guys who start accounts on there and they are looking to find a relationship or are the type that are shy and waits for others to talk to them, entering a room and standing out in a good way such as attractive to females etc can get conversations going quickly. Lastly there are profiles and in the profiles you can share all sorts of stuff, and there is a tab for REAL LIFE to where you could share a picture of yourself real life, or just state as many do that SL is SL and RL is RL which basically means that they are not interested in sharing their real identity and appearance. There is also a line on the main page of profile that shows if your married or not. I am married to my girlfriend on second life, but this doesnt stop whispers from other females from trying to steal me away from her. Most respect that and dont try to steak you away, but there are also others who they dont care and just want to get with you for some adult behavior and I am not that way. But many on there are. They even have where you can have children going through the whole process of making one the same as IRL and so some people role play as husband wife etc. I myself am just myself and dont do that RP stuff, however I have multiple accounts there and my Vampire does RP as a Vampire which is a part of 7's Family, a large vampire family. With the vampire I hang out in places that are of the vampire setting as well as industrial clubs with industrial music and stuff. In that group of people you have a strong dark and goth following of people. But I know many great people where they play on there as a vampire and IRL you would never ever expect them to be a very dark and interesting vampire. But its also where more of the odd balls are found in which you have to keep an eye out for those wanting you follow them to the darker depths of Second Life where you might find yourself in a pretty scary place even when its virtual and you can walk away from it by exiting the viewer at any time. I use the Firestorm Viewer and have been using it since 4.7.1 its now onto 5.0.3 I THINK. Just the other day they killed off support for 4.7.7 which i had been using for a while. The Firestorm viewer has way better controls and options than the default viewer. There are a number of different viewers out there that support SL and OpenSIM. I have an OpenSIM private world on my one computer that I use for messing around with building objects and scripts without affecting the real Second Life world. Quote So, if I change my Avatar, You might draw more attention to yourself depending on what type of attention your looking for with a different appearance. Likeable really comes down to how well you relate with others and your attitude really. If your cool and get people to laugh and stuff like I do, you can have a whole room going on a chat subject and people giving you friend invite requests, as well as enter a place you haven't been to in a while and have people saying long time no see because your memorable to them. Your article looks like its from 2006 and SL CAME out around 2004. There was a time when people were making LOTS of money making and selling virtual objects. The days for that have dwindled. Money can still be made, but not the kind of money of 10 years ago. Whoever came out with Bloodlines and all the objects you need for that system has got to be a multimillionaire. There is an amulet that you can wear so that you no longer need to feed from blood dolls, or tanks of blood, or from random people. You wont die as a vampire because its almost an exploit item that you can remain a vampire if you cough up $45 USD and wear this amulet then we will allow for you to cheat the system and not have to feed as the amulet with freeze the timer that consumes blood so that there is no requirement for blood or death if you dont feed. Just about every vampire out there and there are well over 100,000 of them bought this amulet. Myself on my vampire, I feed and im good, and i save myself from wasting $45 on a virtual object. If it was $10 I'd buy it, but $45 is insane to me for this object.Geeks info is often outdated... Quote from: patio on July 22, 2017, 12:42:30 PM Geeks info is often outdated...Hey! It is off topic. Solve : You will not go off the grid. Will you?? |
Answer» Hey! This is off-topic. Some of you have worked in engineering and understand the physics involved in going off the grid and having your own electric system to run your household. So I put this here to ask those of you that understand the engineering principles, when is it worthwhile for individuals to try to go off grid completely. After doing some research on this idea I decided not to post any LINKS to anything I found. There is so much miss information and so many opinions that amounts to a personal decision. To put it another way, if you have some capital available, you can go completely off the electric power grid and lives just as competently as in the past. Yes, there'll be some issues regarding maintenance and that sort of thing. But there is even when you're tied into the electric system. Think about it, when anu light bulb goes on in your house, the electric company, and replace it? Of course not. That is your job. In the United States there are a number of municipalities that have their own electric system. Let me clarify that. The cities buy up wholesale electric from the big power companies and then charge householders for the usage. The city itself handles all the billing procedures. If any maintenance is needed, the city will either have their own workers or hire workers from one of the main power companies. In many places it actually works. Users who are on the city control power system have service just as good, or even better than from the major power companies out there. Sometimes at a lower rate. I don't know about outside the United States. But here in the United States there are few choices about who you can get as your power company. Now about the business of going off the grid. Almost always people equate this to getting solar panels on top of your roof. There's more to it than that. There are wind turbines a person can use day or night and there are gasoline and diesel generators that are very efficient. Also, an electrical generator can be powered by natural gas. Natural gas prices are very low. Sometimes the objection is made that the use of batteries to store power. They say it is not an economic reality. That could change. And a person does not have to use batteries to store electricity. Energy can be stored in other forms. Hydraulic, pneumatic and kinetic, just to name a few. Let me clarify a point. If you happen to live in an area where your property has extreme elevations and if you have a supply of water from a nearby stream, you can store up hydraulic power by pumping water uphill into a pool at the top of the hill. Later, you can use that waterpower to turn on the lights in your house at night. Then there is the business of conserving energy. The new LED lights that come out now make it very cost effective for a person to have their own electric system. You can light up the inside of your house for a fraction of the cost of what it used to be. Then there's the matter of heat. Using electricity to generate heat is a bad idea if you have available either natural gas or a biomass. The cost of natural gas is so low in many areas that one could go off the grid just by switching over to electricity generated by natural gas. Strange that nobody talks about this. Anyway, I put this post here because I have been thinking about going off the grid because my local power company is absolutely unreasonable. To comply with their rules I'm either going to pay $1000 a month for my electric bill or I am going to have to invest in over $10,000 of additional equipment to comply with local rules and regulations that would bring down my electric costs. Bear in mind I am not talking about safety issues. Here in this area the power company has some strange rules about what they call baseline usage. In effect, it prevents a single household from having more than about four people living in the same house. Don't ask me to explain, that is just the way they do it. If you want more people to live with you, you have to buy another electric meter and have them pay a separate electric bill. Yeah, it's crazy.. But that's what I get for living in California. Anyway, I would like to hear your remarks or comments about going off the grid. I don't think I'm going to do it. But maybe you could help me make up my mind. Thanks for reading this and thanks in advance for any comments you have. I've thought about going to solar/wind turbines as a way to get off of the power grid or at the very least greatly reduce my power bill. However, even with all of the tax rebates in my state (Utah), I cannot justify the initial cost involved to purchase all of the equipment. Also, there are a lot of big advances being made in the solar and battery industry (e.g. Tesla with their solar powered shingles https://www.tesla.com/solarroof) that I think right now is the wrong time. I think in another 2-3 years the cost of renewable energy solutions is going to greatly decrease or even bigger advancements are going to be made to the point it would be dumb not to switch, and that's when I plan on switching. I've also read a couple of articles and seen startups talking about solar power panel sharing solutions that would allow you to buy and sell excess power to and from neighbors without dealing with the power company. Something like this could cause an industry change that would affect renewable energy solution prices and the cost of power in general, which is another reason I'm waiting.I have wanted to go "partially off the grid" .... still in the process someday of doing this. I have a barn that has constant sunlight when the suns up and would be perfect for solar on its roof. I have some Lead Acid Automotive batteries from 3 vehicles I no longer have that the batteries are still good. I charge them occasionally to top them off since when they sit over a period of time they slowly drain. I use them mainly for 750 watts + 1000 watts ( 2 inverters ) 120VAC when camping or during a power outage to have silent power. I also have 2 generators one of them a small 2500 watt and the other is 4800 watts. The smaller one is still new in its original box. Havent added gasoline because then i'd have to worry about the ethanol in the tank and carburetor. The 4800 watt generator I have the fuel shut off VALVE and run it until the bowl is empty to store it with a dry carburetor, and I start it once every month or so to keep it running and add fresh gasoline to the old 5 gallon tank of gasoline to revitalize the fuel so that it doesnt go completely stale and then not run or pop and spit on stale gas at time of need because its not as flammable as it once was so lesser power produced on it. I have been running it and adding fresh to the old gasoline for 3 years now without running through an entire tank of gasoline yet and its been ok so far. Its nice being able to run 2 refrigerators, lights, TV, Internet, Telephone, Microwave, and other stuff during a power outage off of the 4800 watt generator that has a 120/240VAC output choice. But its loud when it runs and while it has 9 hours rated run time on 5 gallons, it not something the neighbors would like to hear past 10pm, so the Lead Acid automotive batteries allow for lighting and TV, Internet, and other needs when I need to be quiet but power is out. *At some point I will get Deep Cycle batteries in place of the Automotive Batteries which are the proper use for this type of application... Automotive batteries are really just intended for a quick cranking of an engine to start vs a long draw without an alternator to rejuvenate and constantly top off while engine is running. Also have a project on hold where I was converting an exercise bike to make 120VAC and around 120Watts. That project placed on hold when my wife heard the purpose of it. I wanted to get my daughter who was 10 at the time to exercise and so if you want to play video games and watch tv, you can pedal to power it and this way no COUCH potatoes. And watching TV and playing games for long periods of time is healthy At some point I will finish this because I like the idea of exercising and powering stuff or storing to battery bank energy produced. I was going to control the torque resistance by a circuit board I made that controls how strongly of a charge is applied to the battery bank. The weaker the electricity applied to batteries the easier it is to pedal, but the more power applied to batteries, the greater the amperage able to be squeezed into the batteries to change it and so more mechanical resistance when pedaling because your fighting the field where greater electrical draw = greater mechanical resistance to whoever pedals it. I have an alternator from the 1997 Mazda 626 which I will connect to it and have a push button to a 12V battery and you basically would start pedaling and then push the momentary switch to start the field in the alternator and then as long as you continue to pedal or your output from pedaling is greater than the draw to keep the field from collapsing in the alternator, you can continue to generate electricity. I tested this with a horizontal drive motor to spin it and wired it up with momentary switch and I powered up to 750 watts off of it through inverter. The Alternator is a 90 AMP, so I could create up to 9 AMPS of 120VAC, however the more amps the more torque required. Also wanted to make a sterling motor and make power that way, but I realized that I would need a brook or something to have a temperature offset to run it. Winters it might work good because you could have a good natural temperature offset between the outside air temperature and a solar heat cabinet like a green house. But havent made that yet and to buy a sterling motor they are pricey. So I will machine my own. Just need the time to do it pretty much. The sterling motor would spin a small dynamo which would trickle charge lead acid batteries with control to not stall the sterling by trying to charge too aggressively. But Solar is the EASIEST. I would just need to buy it and install them and tie them all together. No moving parts. But the cost of the setup before I have a positive return on my investment would take years, and solar panels dont last forever and they lose efficiency as they age. Right now I'm still on the grid, but have plans to someday be partially off the grid for barn and maybe lighting in home as for I have switched to mostly LED lighting at 7w-14w each. The heavy power needs of washing machine, dryer, microwave, and refrigerators will have to still take from the grid. I know that i could sell excess power back to power company, but the cost of the hardware to make that happen and the small scale solar that i have plans for just seems foolish as for it would take forever and a day to sell enough power back to power company to offset that cost, so its best that I just use my own power for myself and not trickle the little bit back to the grid. If anything I will add more Lead Acid batteries as they become available for free or inexpensively when healthy automotive batteries or marine deep cycle batteries can be acquired. BIGGEST danger with my setup is lead acid batteries if anything metal falls across the posts = shower of sparks and a fire, and so I built a wooden cabinet that I store them in so that if anything gets knocked over its not a problem in barn. I dont have the batteries teamed yet, but will team them eventually to increase my amperage of my 12VDC to last longer under load. The batteries I keep out in barn and charge there as well because I dont like the idea of hydrogen gas created in my home. The barn is drafty and so no pockets of it will form and cause an explosion. Whenever you put lead-acid batteries in an enclosure, your must provide some way of venting g the hydrogen gas to the outside.Nods... I dont charge them in that wooden cabinet, its just used right now as a safe storage so that a shovel or coil of chicken wire doesnt somehow fall onto the battery posts. I will drill a bunch of holes in the wooden cabinet someday when i team them and charge them in there in which the charging process is when hydrogen vents. Adequate airflow through it with a bunch of 1" or 2" diameter holes with circle cutter will do the job in the sides and lid. The battery posts would be protected by rubber boots same as you see on modern cars with the red and black rubber boot. Hydrogen lighter than air and so it will vent out top. One of my friends brothers works pulling parts out of cars by order from an auto salvage yard and he has about 12 automotive batteries he got cheap and healthy of same CCA rating teamed parallel in a metal shed, and a 2500 watt inverter which came at a premium, but it allows him to run his oil furnace winters when electric is out at night without neighbors angry about generator. Then if power is still out, during day he powers the home + charges the battery bank when he can make noise without making neighbors angry, and pull 75-80% of the maximum power draw which is where the generator operates most efficient. *The only undersight on his battery bank is that, cold batteries give off less power then room temperature batteries so he had to add a 65 watt flood light in his cabinet to keep the batteries warm, so the minute that power goes out on say a -15F night, the batteries in the cabinet from the single 65 watt flood light might be around 30F and not so chilled. Its also the reason why he has 12 of them is the more cold batteries teamed the lesser that they behave like cold batteries all connected parallel with fused links so that if a plate shorts in a battery etc it will pop the fuse and open the connection to bummed battery vs 11 of them ganging up on the 1 that decided to die giving it an unexpected flaming funeral in the metal shed away from the house. My comment on this was #1 ... why not just add a separate chimney and have a wood stove, or do away with oil and go to wood. #2 ... why dont you make a custom muffler for the generator that will make it run quieter. His answers were... wood stoves are dirty, doesnt want to be bothered with having to feed it wood, a fire hazard, and a chimney and wood stove costs way more than what his setup cost him to put in himself. As far as custom muffler he agreed that that would be a good idea but he would have to have his brother weld maybe an automotive resonator and muffler that would bolt onto the generator. Then send the exhaust out a hole in shed to outside, with hole bigger than muffler pipe so that it doesnt come to rest on the sheet metal and make for a very loud vibrating shed. |

Solve : Problems with new Domain Name? |
Answer» This could be about networking, but I put it here in Off Topic. When you CHANGE hosting company you need to change the master dns server for your domain name.Well, I wonder if thee is more than that. Does it make a difference if I have a new TLD? Recently some new TLDs are available. LIKE: .BLOG .CLUB .GURU .LIFE .ONLINE .TECH And many others. Now here is my question. Is it possible that some crazy nerds who program routers and servers thought that a TLD is always two or three LETTERS and those servers or routers choke on the TLD with more than four letters? Any ideas? Have you contacted your Hosting service yet ? ?As a matter of fact I did. I took them awhile to gt back to me. So much for he "24/7" service. So they wail let me send an e-mail 24/7 - When they answer is another day or two. I now will promise not to buy anything on the weekend. |
