Solve : Better a living dog than a dead Lion. Internet Security??

Answer» BETTER a living dog than a dead Lion. Internet Security?

My title is base on a article by
By Michael Kassner
June 10, 2013, Tech Republic He wrote about BGP and Internet Security. He laments how some don't want to take the safe choice.
Quote
What would you think if someone INTIMATELY familiar with the inner workings of digital networking BEGINS a paper by pronouncing the Internet insecure, then asks, “Does this mean we have simply been lucky, or are the issues more theoretical than actual?”

He goes on to criticize BGP, Border Gateway Protocol.
Quote
The final issue with BGP is how long it takes to respond after a major FLAP. Faced with a large-scale change in routing, it may take BGP minutes to cope. For many purposes, that is not a problem, but it will DISRUPT services like VoIP.
Is there a fix? He has a lot to say about it.

Solve : Take CO2 from the Air and make Beer. Or something.?

Answer»

They can make it into alcohol, which can be made into Beer.
This comes from a story in Scientific American in September 2010

In May 2013 a new twist to the  story was picked up by CBS news.
Quote

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-57576602/rushing-fireball-could-turn-carbon-dioxide-into-biofuel/
Now, researchers at the University of Georgia say they've hit upon a way to take the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and turn it into useable industrial products. The impact of such a discovery is potentially huge. The goal is to remove the CO2 directly from the air and turn it into bio-fuel -- not only helping power the world, but hopefully taking down global temperatures at the same time
Here is a short synopsis of the 2010 story.
Quote
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=turning-carbon-dioxide-back-into-fuel
In the 1990s a graduate student named Lin Chao at Princeton University decided to bubble carbon dioxide into an electrochemical cell.  ....
He published his findings in 1994—and no one cared. ...
Chao's successor in the Princeton lab of chemist Andrew Bocarsly was deeply interested in finding a solution to the growing problem of the CO2 pollution causing global climate change.   ...
Graduate student Emily Barton picked up where he left off and, using an electrochemical cell that employs a semiconducting material used in photovoltaic solar cells ...
[Andrew Bocarsly:]  "We take CO2, water, sunlight and an appropriate catalyst and generate an alcoholic fuel."
For the full impact, follow both links.
BTW: To break the bonds of CO2 requires quite a bit of energy. Thus is is very interesting to curious minds.More interesting...

At least math wise...Link given by patio is about prime numbers.
My theme is about converting CO2 into something you can enjoy.
As for me, I have had enough prime numbers.

Here are more links about  "CO2 into Fuel" from Google:
http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/energy/blogs/new-microbe-makes-fuel-from-co2-in-the-air
http://www.gizmag.com/atmospheric-carbon-dioxide-fuel-microorganism/26836/
http://phys.org/news/2013-05-scientists-co2-sequestration-technique-supergreen.html
Interesting... Its good that people are working on projects to someday scrub the air of CO2 AMONG other polutants, however the biggest problem is that most reactions create more of a waste product than what is to be gained, so you can design something that scrubs the air of CO2, but how much CO2 is created in the process of doing so?

Same goes for people who get sapped into buying the water bottles with 2 electrodes and connect it to their intake of their engines and drive around thinking they are fueling their engines with water and saving on gasoline, when it has already been proven over and over again that the electricity ( energy ) required to split water and seperate the Oxygen and Hydrogen exceeds that of the energy released when oxygen and hydrogen explode and turn back into water. So they are actually making their gas mileage ever so slightly worse.

The only way the "Rushing Fireball" project would work would be to have the facility that PERFORMS this CO2 air scrub to be totally off the power grid. Mainly powered off of solar energy or geothermal energy that can be used to create electricity to run the facility, and if it is not geothermal or both, and only solar, then they would likely want to have a large bank of batteries in the basement to power the facility on a cloudy day etc.

Energy can not be created nor destroyed, but Solar, Wind, Hydro, and Geothermal is free after the initial large investment to build a generator to tap into it.

If the "Rushing Fireball" project was powered off the grid, its CO2 carbon footprint would likely be greater to operate the facility than that of what is scrubbed out of the air, so while it would probably get a 2.1 Billion Dollar Government Grant etc(guess-timation since there appears to be no USA DEBT CEILING and counting), this facility that scrubs the air would be acting as if it is helping when it is actually making CO2 emissions worse because COAL is being burned to power the large facilities that run this "Rushing Fireball" project.Thank you for your response, DaveLembke
The scientists are really serious. It is not a gimmick. Everyone convienently IGNORES the fact that Mother Nature makes her own adjustments...
Some of them short term...that can be anyalised...others take thousands of years.

The folly that Mankind can somehow destroy a planet that has survived everything for a few million years simply illustrates the blatant arrogance of Mankind...

Well the planet would survive as in it would still exist unless we find a way to cast it into the sun through some sort of magnetic imbalance etc or accidentally open up a black hole that sucks the earth into it etc ( both not very likely by far and more a thing of a good SCI-FI Flick!!!!), but life on it may be altered as it has in the PAST. The biggest threat to life is probably nuclear contamination and 99% of life on the planet is quickly impacted by death as well as destruction of reproductive systems so whole species are extinct quickly, or within a few generations if not the first generation of exposure. If dooms day ever triggered, the earth would remain, but only 1% of life would probably make it through it, and that is only if those species can survive without the other species that it may have lived off of such as cockroaches etc. Hopefully that day never comes as for we already know that the human race would come to an end or be up against extreme odds against us of survival.

Solve : Common Two-, Three- and Four-Letter Words?

Answer»

Common Two-, Three- and Four-Letter Words can be used to make passwords that are easy to remember but more secure than just one word passwords.
Link: http://www.poslarchive.com/math/scrabble/lists/common-234.html

Examples:
2's
at aw ax ay be  by eh  em  ex fa f if
3's
bag bah beg bel ben can cap car  cow  coy coz
eth eve ewe eye lop LOT low net new nib pug pul pun
4's
bise bisk bite bits bitt bize blab blae blah blam blat blaw
braw bray bred bree bren brew brie brig brim brin brio
cult  cups curb curd cure curf curl curn curr curs curt
daut davy dawk dawn daws dawt days daze dead deaf deal dean

Just the short list above can GIVE hundreds of memorable combinations. Use the link to the long list to create combinations the go p into 100's of millions.

2-3-4 combos  ex_cow_dawb   if_net_deaf
4-2-3 combos  club_be_low  bring_ax_bag

Combos of real words with underscores makes it easy to remember passwords that are too easy ton crack.

Yes, true random letters are better, but congresspeople to use them because that can't remember them. So they start using simple one word passwords. Get in the habit of using three or more words separated by underscores.

Removed extra text between the start and end of your post to illustrate my point.
That list shows the most viewed laptop or notebook pages on one website, notebookreview.com - nothing more, nothing less.
There's nothing wrong with the list, I think you may just be under the IMPRESSION that it shows something else.
I would expect the Lenovo to be quite a popular page for viewers because it was released recently, it's a good brand, probably well advertised, etc.If I were shopping online, I'd probably focus on newegg.com, amazon.com, and maybe the websites of retailers such as Staples and OfficeMax, and read buyer reviews posted on the sites.  notebookreview.com is an interesting site and they apparently have their own reviews of scores laptops/notebooks, but they don't have buyer/user reviews, as far as I can see.  So, I wonder how they determine their list of most popular laptops/notebooks.

Well, actually, their ranking methodology is stated right at the top of the page you posted.  It says, "Below is a list of the most viewed Notebook/Laptops based on NotebookReview.com product views data."  So, apparently, they track the number of product views by site visitors and use that data for their ranking.  Again, I think I'd find buyer reviews on seller websites more relevant.

Yes, as indicated/implied in previous replies, if you enter hotmail.com in your browser, it re-directs to a Live.com sign-in page which shows Outlook, Microsoft's new title for their email service.  Just go ahead and enter your old Hotmail address in the box for "Microsoft account" and your password for you old Hotmail account.  You should be able to sign in.I like how MS didn't even let anyone know they were dumping it...

That was the announcement of Outlook.com preview, and the fact that it would replace Hotmail. On February 19, 2013 it went out of preview and into public release, and just about every media outlet on the planet carried a story about that. As BC_Programmer said, every Hotmail user got multiple notifications.

The change was not seamless.
MS deliberately chose a way to make users take note and make changes. This is part of their business plan. This is sometimes called the 'mushroom growth theory' in the business world. It has nothing to do with computers. It is a way of manipulating consumers.

I am one of a number of senor citizens that use computers and haven very low vision in the center of the eye. We depend on all the aids  available to us. My e-mail client can log in automatically to the POP_ services of Hotmail and DeadMail*. Before the 'improvement' my browser could PROVIDE the user name and password for me. It was never a security issue.

Thank you all for letting me vent.

* Sarcasm. It is call Live com,  but for me it is now dead.

I see nothing about the transition from Hotmail to Outlook that changes saving the username and password in a browser.  Now, IE won't save it for me but IE won't save lots of passwords for me that Firefox or Opera will save.  So, if you're using IE, try a different browser for better password-saving support.

Solve : See the folder is not empty.?

Answer»

The MP3 FILES on my PC are in folders with custom names. After a download of a block of MP3 files, I move them to the new FOLDER.
But it is not easy to see if the folder is EMPTY. So after I move the files, I add the picture below.

Does this  make sense for you? It works for me.
You have my permission to use the "Not Empty" JPEG on you system. Copyleft.
Apparently Windows does not have a built-in "Not Empty" graphic.
Do a right click on the picture to copy it.In Windows Explorer, you open the folder and see a list of files, this list being in different format depending on the view mode (thumbnail, icon, list, details, ETC.) Thus you know if a folder is empty or not.

Solve : Linux Inside. Make a decal.?

Answer»

You can make this into a transparent label. Use an Avery 5660®
http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/Products/Labels/Addressing-Labels/Easy-Peel-Clear-Address-Labels_05660.htm

MS Word has templates for Avery labels. Or you can even print them from an on-line application.

What would you do with a transparent Label?

I'd prefer a decal myself that doesnt look like the old Intel Inside though.     .. Maybe SOMEONE here who is creative with GRAPHIC arts etc can make a really cool original one that doesnt mimic already existing labels, and if we have a few submissions we can have a vote on which one is everyones favorite etc.

I'd think I'd want mine to be Linux MINT themed. Although a Round Lifesaver looking sticker with 14 for release # at the center of the hole with Linux MINT where the letters Lifesaver would be would PROBABLY be no different than copying the Intel Logo for Linux Inside!

Solve : Find Free Legal Video Torrent?

Answer» Note to FBI: This post does NOT have any live links.

Use of a torrent makes possible a wide range of material that is not readily available on conventional download servers

Examples:

Scientific REPORTS and videos that are free for distribution. The authors want the material available, but will not deploy funds for a web site. So they can just turn it over to the torrent sites.

Independent Music by COMPOSERS and reformers who want to show off talent  with not charge. The use of  a torrent site can given them a bigger audience. Some have videos.

Fringe Film Makers that also want the public to see what they can do. Again, a web site would overload their budget and personnel.

Education Videos and documents provided free of charge. Many education INSTITUTIONS do have web sites with FTP. Even so, allowing torrents can cut downn of the server load.

Public Domain and GPL libraries take up a huge about of storage space. Having such achieves distributed as torrents reduces the cost of keeping the marital available to everyone. These seldom have videos, but they do have video players and codecs and other useful tools for video hobbyists.

Of course, the bulk of material being transferred by torrent is in violation of the copyright laws.

To find a source of legal material, just do a search on “Legal Torrent Sites” and find a lot of information. Yes you can torrent  without breaking the law.
Why do you mention the FBI  Quote from: harry 48 on February 10, 2013, 11:46:52 AM
Why do you mention the FBI
The FBI monitors torrent downloads.

Read this:
http://torrentfreak.com/fbi-employees-download-pirated-movies-and-tv-shows-130209/I know the FBI are checking up on these things in the states, like SOMEONE who downloads loads of material, but their are not interested in the likes of me who would download maybe ONE song a month

I notice reading reports and web sites that Americans are loosing a lot of their freedoms on the web etc, and the new law N.D.A.A. signed over the xmas holidays ( when no-one was looking will make it worse.

Solve : What is your fave movie and actor....?

Answer»

Ok guys some of you may not know this but i am a major film buff , i am extermely crazy on films , i would like to know what all your guys fave movies are and actors / actress .

I have 2 faves: hustle: paul newman
                          Die hard: bruce willis

Also explain why that movie is important you.

Die hard is a kickass movie all round the film contains sli-witty adult humor ands contains volience i find amazeing for the 1980's.

Have fun
Favourite movie... I have way too many.

If I had to choose though, it would possibly have to be High Fidelity (John Cusak.) I Just love the film, it's really funny at parts and Cusak is one of my favourite actors. My favorite movie will always be 'The Stand'

My favorite actor though is always an actress
like.... Rachel Welch  Eye candy from my young days...

As in the stand based on steven kings book  Because i cant stand that film but i love the book Quote from: street1 on July 05, 2007, 08:50:46 AM

SHE IS EXTERMELY HOT  Steven King, yes the best author in the last 30 years,

except our fine member'Rob Pomeroy' I should have already
bought and read Robs' book. I soon will.We have some real
smart members here.He is definately one of them.

http://www.lulu.com/content/406540no no no steven king is the best horror writer around , his modern books suck , i read all of his old books , the shineing , christine , it , the stand , MISERY , etc Favourite Movie = Man On Fire (Denzal Washington)
I love this movie, and it never EVER leaves the DVD player. As the title suggests its a little sadistic (no one does get set on fire), by the way Creasey (Denzal) carries out his search and revenge for the person who kidnapped Peta (Dakota Fanning).
A short Summery:
Man on Fire is situated in Mexico where kidnappings have become an everyday thing and Creasey is a bodyguard that is hired to protect Peta. At first Creasey is a man who keeps himself to himself, isnt sociable and starts to drink heavily and has no intrest in life at all. As the film progress' Creasey and Peta form a relationship and Peta starts to have a heavy influence on him. Such as he promises her he wont ever drink again.
However when Peta is kidnapped Creasey goes on a trail of destruction to find, and avenge the person who ordered her kidnapping.
That is the VERY vaguest summery I could give without ruining it for people who may wish to see it.
The film is alot more deeper both emotionally and plot wise as I have described but like i say i dont want to ruin it. There are a fair few twists as well.
My favourite quote:
Rayburn: A man can be an artist... in anything, food, whatever. It depends on how GOOD he is at it. Creasey's art is death. He's about to paint his masterpiece.

Chrismy favourite movie would be = デスノート part 1 (the Beginning) and 2 (The Last Name)
starring my favourite actor = Ken'ichi Matsuyama

and many attractive Japanese girls.

the anime version of that movie was better though... but, the ending sucked... if you read the storyline, i think you'll find the fact that my relationship with my girlfriend is similar to that of light and his girlfriend's, is rather.... immoral almost..

but ok, if you haven't read the storyline, or don't know the story, ignore what i said.  OMG* The Godfather parts 1 & 2  (2 < did you know Robert De Niro plays the young Don Corleone ! )  Best series ever ..........

Why is it that so many of us like bad sci-fi movies.  You finish watching one and think to yourself that's the worst movie I've ever seen, then a month later you watch it again. Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 12, 2011, 12:07:48 PM

Oh... we all know how to speak French do we? Smiles and nods reassuringly...

I like watching movies at the theater mostly because of the sound/IMAX 3D. I watched Sucker Punch a month ago because of the great 3D effects-the guns firing, the protagonist executing some nice stunts, etc. The PLOT was so incoherent and filled to the point of supersaturation with pulp fiction and gore that it felt like one mess of a video game.
I wouldn't want to watch it over again though. Think of it like this: You know how you watch 3DMark the first time through and marvel at the graphics, take in the combined audio effects of your nice Dolby 7.1 speakers and your workhorse of a graphics card straining its arse off to keep up with the eye candy, and you inevitably come away with a nice smile. I don't exactly know how to explain that feeling after you have been bombarded with 4xAA, 16xAF, life-like graphics, but it kinda gives you this temporary superiority complex. But when you prepare to watch it again your superiority complex yells "I Want MOAR!" and then you soon start to nitpick and COMPLAIN about the ventilation of your computer being related to your graphics card FPS. You soon get so frustrated with the boringness of what was previously eye-candy that you ragequit and hit the switch, in the process killing your beer cooler.Transfusion. You need to get out of the house more often.  What kind of this movie because i have listen about it first time so anyone can tell me about it. Because i like to watch movies. Specially horror movies which are my favorite. Recently i have seen a horror movie saw and it was fabulous. I liked it and enjoyed too much.

All you're doing is 'blurring' the top and bottom of the frame.Hey there Carbon Dude,

I'm not sure of the quaility you'll get using software like Artensoft's Tilt Shift Generator, vs an expensive camera.

Seeing hows I can't afford a cheap camera, much LESS a tilt shift camera, I'm trying this software out.

Also, it was free at GOTD yesterday and that's another reason I'm trying(playing) with this software.

As Seen on TV: The 10 Most Laughably Misleading Ads

Read more:  Cracked.com http://www.cracked.com/article_15768_as-seen-tv-10-most-laughably-misleading-ads.html#ixzz20HQxo9Bj

Yeah, Yeah, it is five years old. But history repeats itself! The only thing that TOPS those ads is some of the same kind of stuff we now have on the Internet. Déjà vu all over again.

Question: Have you seen stuff on the Internet like the in the link above?

Have you seen stuff on the Internet like the in the link above?

Have you? Quote from: JJ 3000 on July 10, 2012, 09:59:47 PM
I have adblocking software, so no.
Have you?
I often search for very low price on things I want. I find some sites that offer unheard of low prices only to find that somehow when I check out the price is not the same. I think it is misleading.

So far, I have not got blocking software that will warm me when a DEAL is just too good to be true.I don't think these ads are all that misleading.  The worst they do is pretend that their products are more than mere novelties.  If people fall for it, they're obviously not using enough common sense to say "You know, adding a magnet to my pen isn't going to stop me from dropping it."  What's misleading is when Taco Bell says they use actual meat or products are claimed to have no MSG even though almost all processed FOODS actually do contain it (it just goes by a different name).  Another good one is when restaurants put "Kobe beef" on their menu.  Here's a quick tip: if you are eating in the US, you are not eating Kobe beef.

And for what it's worth, those peeling gloves work pretty well.  They're just completely unnecessary because you could peel blanched potatoes with your bare hands if you really wanted to.  That's how it goes for most of these products: they often work just FINE, but they serve no practical purpose.  And in most cases, it's something you can make yourself in less than an hour.

My tuppence (for what its worth). I think that most posts in the off topic section have a point and create discussions. This is actual rubbish, i know i dont have to read it or take part, but of all the nonsense that COULD be posted, this is the most annoying, banal and fruitless.People have different senses of humour. The attitude of one moderator shouldn't dictate what everyone else finds funny or amusing.
Funny and amusing it aint........sometimes you need to know where the line is and these kind of puerile posts can open a can of worms that could possibly lower the off topic section into something farcical.

(another tuppence, that 4 pence today :-( )   Yeah, I agree with you about this topic. But the other one was perfectly fine in my opinion. People were responding to it, so they must have found it amusing in some way.
Personally, i'd leave the bees alone and concentrate on my grammar, but hey, that's just me.... The "other one" was locked (and the poster warned) because of his last post where he told someone to shut up. It was rude and, in my opinion, the thread was only going to degenerate from there. Was I a bit premature? Perhaps. But if you look at all of the posts by this one individual I think you'll have to agree he borders on being a "troll" - which is unacceptable on any forum. And by the way, nobody else complained. If there are others who want that thread reopened I'll do so gladly. But the warning level will remain in place for now. That's fair enough. I just think a small bit extra leeway should be given for the off-topic forum. I don't disagree. This was a one-off instance.Looking over the OP's posts is all anybody needs to do.

Not to mention the "why won't nonrechargable batteries charge" topic.

The forum is called "off-topic" not "stupid nonsense". Even Geek-9pm's nonsense has some discussion value. This and topics like it have zero discussion value and that which it does have should not be lauded simply because that encourages them to post more similar nonsense.

Additionally, the fact that this topic only appeared suddenly after the other one was locked, and the off-topic threads only appeared after his other posts started to get ignored elsewhere, is evidence that he is just looking for attention.

Had Allan not locked the other Topic i would have...

I don't feel CH has a case of over-moderation...we always take other factors into CONSIDERATION...
I've seen it go both ways on other Forums...but not here.

Graphics Cards Power Use. (Consumption.)

It is really annoying when venders do not give the power requirements for a graphics card. Other than "500 watt PSU recommended." SURE it is recommended, they also sell power supplies.

You answered your own question; nothing to see here; move along.  The implied assumption that grapics card manuf. also make/sell PSU's couldn't be further from the truth...

In fact find me one example if you like...GPU's don't always consume a specific amount of power. The actual power usage varies DEPENDING on the specific system configuration. Additionally, while many cards are based on the same GPU, they often have different supporting circuitry with different electrical requirements, and different bus master circuitry can impact the precise power consumption used by each graphics card as well.

The reason these values are not provided by a vendor is because they are ethereal. They don't truly exist. The tests done by hardware.fr are for a specific configuration. In some instances the measured values exceed the rated TDP of the card (one specific instance being the 9800GT). But again, that's only one 9800GT; the GPU may be a Nvidia 9800GT, but the surrounding circuitry will typically differ from vendor to vendor. The recommended minimum requirements are usually calculated with the provided specifications of the NVidia GPU's themselves which are provided to component manufacturers, the power usage of the added circuitry, as well as a good padding value, and then rounded up to valid Power Supply sizes.

Asking "Why don't Graphics cards manufacturers give exact numbers for power usage" is the same as asking why APPLICATION software requirements don't give precise values for memory and disk space. Different specific configurations will have different measurements. You cannot say that "This Graphics card uses exactly XXX.XX Watts of power" any more than you can state that a given application will use a specific amount of memory.

Patio,  the reference was to vendors, not makers.  Let me elaborate.. I look at a list of graphics cards from a trusted vendor, they do not include poser consumption data. I have yet nto find a major vendor that includes the specific power requirements of the cards. Instead they say something like '...500 watt power supply recommended.' That is from the vendor, not the maker of the card.

When looking at a list of cards, it would be nice if one coul compare the major features and details alongside the prices. Is there a vendor or any web site that does that? I think in the long term it would be BETTER for the vendors to be straight forward and provide the details, even if it might cut into sales of power supplies.

BTW, as you know, there is a movement in the industry to try and cut down on the power consumption of desktop PCs. Some graphics chip manufactures are mowing this direction. It would be good ton know if I could improve the  graphics with my current PSU and not spend big $$$. The  money SAVING not upgrading the PSU could go into a better graphics.
Is that not logical?

Solve : How much white space.?

Answer»

This is in Off Topic because it is hard to put in a category.
This is based of a UC Berkley report critical of the FCC

In this context "WHITE space" means vacant TV frequencies inside the USA.  Other couturiers also recognize the concept. In the UK trails have already been running  for awhile. What about the USA?

In the USA the FCC is dragging its feet.

Yes, the UC Berkeley report is now old. But to date the FCC has hardly done anything. In fact, the FCC had approved the idea some time ago. But they are very slow to remove the last barriers to proposed use of the white space in the USA. Here is a informative article done by the University of California at Berkley. It is rather technical. The point is that the university calculates the FCC calculations are very wrong. Yet the  FCC has allowed  very little of the alleged space. up to even n now.
Here is the link. It is a PDF.
How much white space has the FCC opened up?

Comments or question if you please.

Why is this important..........

Why is this important..........
Is accessible communication important?

At one time Television BROADCASTING was non-resistant. People got along without nit. Then in the 1950s it grew rapidly. eventually 69 channels were specified b y the FCC.  ( Channel 37 can not be used.)

At one time Cell phones were virtually non-resistant.  People got along without them. But by the mod 90s  cell towers were built in some of the most remote places of the world.

Here we are in 2012 and many rural Americans get internet only over dial-up. The present political administration has ordered that 500 MHz of spectrum space be freed for rural Internet distribution.

If you are AMONG the 2 million Americans that do not have quality low-cost Internet, this is important. No, it is not life-threatening to not hate good Internet service. It is just annoying that the same bureaucracy that makes spacious promises is also the one  standing in the way of the obvious direction of technical progress.

In a nutshell thee is white space available. Maybe not a lot. But enough to make a difference for many Internet aficionados. It is  the FCC running slow.  (Maybe they never upgrade their desktops.)

At the present time WI-Fi (802.11 x)can offer you 11 channels. (More or less in other regions.) And the range is very limited.  The FCC estimated, in effect, the range could be increase by a magnitude or more with little interference issues if deployed in rural areas.

OK, those are not the exact WORDS. The tech stuff gets kind of deep and it is seldom accurate. The charts in the UC of Berkeley report SHOWS that overall you could have a CDFF  of .5 or better of having a lot of white space in any area. If you use a more liberal way of finding the white space.

If deployed liberally, and allowing occasional disruptions and indifference, regional withe space  internet connection could average over the 1.5 Mbps for T1 or DSL. And would be free. It can be paid by the local government. It would cost less than having street lights. It would increase productively in areas that now lack good Internet. It can improve the educational quality of brutal schools.

The technology has already been available for some time. Manufactures are not going to produce the equipment as long as one lower part part of the government ignores the mandate of the higher level of government. This does not have to be a political issue.

Example.: Some protest the changes would interfere with wireless microphones.  Solution - give anybody that has an old wireless mike a new wireless microphone free. (There is a glut of free spectrum space for wireless microphones. Current microphones do not use the spectrum well.)

Sillier solution than the article itself... Quote from: patio on June 01, 2012, 12:46:31 PM

Sillier solution than the article itself...
No it is not! It is very real.
Why? When the FCC ruled against analog TV, the US government offered a $40 rebate to every owner of an old TV set. That was rather costly, but it allowed progress to enter.
Therefore, if a few people with wireless mikes are going to stop the use of  the white space,  let the government buy them  new microphones that conform to higher standards already in effect.
Really. It is, ostensibly, one of the white space issues.
Google:
wireless microphone frequencies
OR
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_microphone
Quote
There is currently a movement to allow the operation of personal unlicensed, wideband digital devices in the UHF television spectrum in the United States. These devices are backed by firms which seek to develop and deploy these devices as quickly as possible. These 'white space' devices (WSDs) will be required to have GPS and access to a location database to avoid interfering with other users of the band. Initial tests performed by the FCC have shown that in some cases, prototypes of these devices are unable to correctly identify frequencies that are in use, and may therefore accidentally transmit on top of these users. Broadcasters, theaters, and wireless microphone manufacturers are firmly against these types of devices ostensibly for this reason.
the FCC approved the unlicensed use of 'White Space' in November of 2008.And as is mentioned in another article (also presented by Geek) their is an actual FCC approved trial of this phenomenon currently underway in Wilmington N.C. by 2 separate Wi-Fi service providers. It appears that rightly or wrongly the FCC is moving very slowly on this issue because the TV lobby has a concern that the use of the white space WILL interfere with their television signal broadcast (which apparently has been disproved).truenorth Thank you truenorth,
In another  blog I said everybody knows what 'unlicensed' is. Apparently it takes the FCC three years to understand what 'unlicensed' means.

They want to give permission for .you to be 'unlicensed'.

Now if you want to get married, most states and other jurisdictions require a marriage license. But if you just want to give her a kiss., no license is needed.  Permission? Write a letter to her father for permission? It will take three years if he also works for the FCC!

Unlicensed wireless microphones are already in use on white space, as mentioned earlier. Did they need permission?

I hope you mean Spidey. Frankly Spidy sounds a bit too much like Spitty and makes me think of someone who is constantly expectorating. That's not a very good name for a female. You'll end up giving her a complex. But Spidey is kind of a generic name for a spider. It's as if you've put no thought into it at all. I urge you to reconsider.

At any rate, you should try to find her a nice male companion so she can lay LOTS and lots of spider eggs. Then you could have lots and lots of baby spiders scurrying about. You could sell them on ebay. Make big money. Just think of it. They would call you "Computer 12 The Spider Monger" You could have a mansion and like a gold and crystal speedboat. You and Spidy could spend the rest of your days looking down your noses (or whatever it is that spiders have) at US unprosperous folk who didn't have the foresight or the wherewithal to start our own spider breeding businesses. thank you I will cal her Spidey and get her a male(obviously when she is fully grown o by the way I will have to wait till she is big to make 100% sure its a she)
if the male is lucky he will MATE her if not... R.I.P he will be eaten by his love, as once i placed a younger spider(which was about 1cm and Spidey was about 3cm

Charles Darwin thought the toucan's oversized beak was a *censored* lure for attracting POTENTIAL MATES, while some modern-day biologists suggested it was either for peeling fruit or to warn off territorial rivals. A new study has found, though, that the outrageously big structure helps to keep the bird cool in the heat of the tropical day.

I love how 8 out of the first 10 threads in this section (excluding the stickied ones, and including this one) are started by Geek. When I (infrequently as it may be) hop onto the CH board, one of the first things I do is look in the Off Topic section for the latest in Geek's Geekerie. It really is something interesting to find out what's going on with "whitespaces," etc. and it definitely is a change from the normal threads of CH.

What I'm trying to GET at is "thank you" and "keep it up," with a side of ""Thanks for the encouragement.  I was not sure members understood what the issue was with white space.

The potential for white space is very great.  Previous announcements made by the FCC admitted that there is a lot of spectrum space not being well used n the television UHF band.  My criticism of the FCC is based on an early paper that was PUBLISHED by the University of California at Berkeley.  In a nutshell, the FCC has wasted time to make it much too difficult for entrepreneurs to come up with new ideas about how to use this great resource.

This year there have been a few rumors that the bottleneck is going to be broken, But t has not happened. This year, 2012, was supposed to be the year the white space usage would be available fro the public benefit.  One or two success stories are proverbial DROPS in the bucket.

As for me, I started out as the licensed broadcast engineer may need years ago.  When my wife and I took our first trip overseas we we did ld stay for a while and I did not renew my license.  And instead, upon returning , I went into others areas of interest,  including computer programming in Silicon Valley.

There's a lot more to be said about the white space issue, but I am not going to make  comer hope my personal blog.  In fact, I do have blogs of my own. I'll post additional INFORMATION about what white space is in what could be on my own blogs.

Actually, I have great respect for what the Federal Communications Commission has done over the years.  Some of the decisions made by the FCC have not always been well-received.  Yet they have brought us down to this point in  where the quality of television reception in United States is very high and there is an abundant choice of program content available either over the air or over the cable networks.

It is unfortunate that at the present time some small interest groups are blocking something that would benefit the public in general.  Here in the States about 20 percent of the POPULATION lives in what is called rural area. This means that television as well as other forms of mass communication are limited simply because of the laws of physics.

Satellite television and satellite radio do help some in rural areas. Nevertheless, doing Internet Via Satellite Is a poor choice. Latency issues involved with satellite communication exit very difficult for interactive programs that are becoming popular over the Internet.  But smart use of the white space available could be a real help to improve Internet communication rural townships of the United States.

These same observations apply to some extent and other parts of the world where people live outside of metropolitan areas.

Again, thank you for your feedback.

You're not working on facts. you're working on suppositions, assumptions, and threads pulled from the tapestry of the cloth woven from those. The 2005 incident didn't "lose" data, the result was a breech of data. This is in no way related to anything that could result from a disk drive being formatted, and poses itself as a logical faux pas. Same for the latter, Which was a breech of data, not the outright destruction thereof. In fact, it confirms at least that they have a backup strategy of some sort, since in both instances it was backup tapes that were lost. There are two other things:

-They were lost, due to shipping issues; there is no reason to conclude that they were stolen.
-considering how often tapes are made, moved around, and so forth, you being able to only cite two instances of this- both of which are in no way related to your original post- says a lot.

Quote

What does formatting a hard drive have to do with losing records? What are you even talking about? The fact is that the tapes were probably being archived or stored somewhere, not "retrieved". Some tech didn't format some hard drive somewhere and go "oh woops I formatted the wrong one, better call up detroit and have them ship me 3000 tapes when I only need one" Mostly because there are on-site backups, as well as redundancies such as RAID in-place, not to mention that such action is not going to be taken with a production environment machine. As noted above, they were lost- that doesn't mean they were stolen; that was the assumption however, the banks made in both instances, working to respond to the worst case scenario by offering things such as Credit monitoring for those affected.

Quote

What the *censored* do any of these have to do with your original supposition? This SEEMS like a "murder arson, and jaywalking" bit, too. "Drunk drivers, parents that don't vaccinate their children, and SMOKERS TAKING BREAKS! MY GAWD!". By the way, the concept of smokers getting extra breaks over their non-smoking colleagues only exists if the place they work is ill-managed. Everywhere I've worked it's been EQUAL and smokers trying to take extra time were properly chastized.

I would surmise that more work hours are wasted to things like FACEBOOK, youtube, and so forth than cigarette smoking. More work hours are probably lost from people drinking coffee than smoking. Smoking is a lot of things but a clocked time sink is not one of them. Anybody concerned about work hours being lost to cigarette smoking should be concerned about coffee, water coolers, and general office banter to the point where their idea of an ideal workplace is a bunch of soundproof cubicles with auditors tracking employees every move to make sure they are as efficient as possible.Thank you, BC. like the one where water boiled in the microwave can explode (only partially true)
it's "partially true" in the way that matters. The water reaches boiling point but due to the way most cups and mugs are created there is nothing for the vapour to form on. Once you add anything to the water- a tea BAG, coffee grounds, sugar, etc. The water will boil violently- (anybody can do this experiment), practically exploding out of the vessel, and becoming a serious risk of burns and injury. For some reason if the item is already in the water you can still have overboil (not sure why). Happened to me with a tea years ago when I had to use a microwave. Scared the bejesus out of me. Take it out of the microwave, put a bit of sugar in, treat resulting burns.

Now, yes, it's only "partially true" because you have to add something to it, but why else would you heat water in a microwave? Nobody thinks "you know what I need, a nice hot cup of water with absolutely nothing in it"; the sole reason for heating water is for making some sort of hot beverage, which means something is added to the water at some point.

Quote
in each case people believed the story because they had very little understanding of the underlying technology.
This coming from a person who can't even put a cup of water in a microwave to confirm his skepticism on the aforementioned "boiling water" or, if he did, is unable to reason that very few people are going to just boil some water and not add something to it.

Speaking of not understanding technology:

As the CD spins, the time it takes for the light to reflect and return tells your CD ROM whether or not there’s a “pit” or “land” – the structure within the CD where the data is encoded.
"the time it takes"? is he really entertaining the idea that the time it takes light to go less than a few millimeters is actually something you can measure with any sort of electronics? It's not the time it takes, it's the reflectivity of the surface. If more than a certain a amount of light get's reflected back, it's a land; otherwise it's a pit.

His explanation of what happens with scratches is also only partially accurate in that typically a scratch will block light entirely, causing any attempt to read the reflectivity layer beneath the scratch to be interpreted as a pit. there is built in ECC (a typical CD-ROM actually contains more than a GB of data, most of it is error correction stuff) but outside a few misinterpreted bits here and there it can't do much except declare a CRC error to the controller.

Anyhow, the theory SOUNDS reasonable. They want you to use gritty toothpaste or baking soda and if it works on teeth, I don't see in why it wouldn't work on CD's as well. Whether it's more effective than getting someone with a specialised machine do it, is another matter of course... Quote from: GlitchPC on February 28, 2012, 02:18:02 PM
Not only is this thread informative...but, I've really enjoyed the comedy relief it has provided.  Now...excuse me while I make a CPU sandwich...

LOL.  From my experience with toothpaste and polishing out imperfections - the toothpaste does not "sand down" anything.
I've used toothpaste to take scratches out of my watch face. The particles in a gritty toothpaste are small enough to acutally fill the scratch.

After I was done with my watch and it looked like the scratch was gone, my dad polished it with a type of car polish and Viola the scratch was back. Quote from: patio on February 28, 2012, 01:54:47 PM

The FBI has released a secret dossier on Steve Jobs that reveals an apparently darker side of the late APPLE co-founder. The 191-page file, made public after a Freedom of Information request, includes allegations from friends and acquaintances that Jobs was a “deceptive individual” who experimented with drugs and was a negligent father.

The dossier was drawn up by the Bureau in 1991 while Jobs was under consideration for political office in George Bush Sr.’s administration. Digging into the Apple creator’s past, FBI agents interviewed friends and acquaintances, as well as talking to Jobs himself.

So what exactly do the files reveal about a man who, judging by the tributes after his death n October, seemed to be universally revered?
Moral issues?  One source described Jobs as “deceptive”, while another claimed he had “alienated a large number of people at Apple” before leaving the company  in 1985. Indeed, a former Apple employee said: “Jobs possesses integrity as long as he gets his way.” An unnamed woman accused Jobs of “SHALLOWNESS and narcissism”. Writing at Gawker, John Cook was surprised at the wave of negative opinion: “I’ve read the files from a lot of background FBI investigations; it’s pretty rare in my experience that this much derogatory information gets dredged up,” said Cook, pointing out that FBI agents usually interview people suggested by the subject of the background check. It’s impossible to know whether this was the case with Jobs as the witnesses’ names have been redacted, said Cook.

If it is a slow news day, -
this will be on the 6 o'clock news tonight.John Carmack Stole Apple II's... or rather tried to, from a school.
basically none of this is really news. Arguably, it might be news to some people, and if you tell a Mac/Apple fanboy they might scratch you with their nails until they get tired and fall asleep, but there are some THINGS at play here:

1. Nobody is perfect. We all have dark secrets. For example mine involves pickles, a toaster, two jars of mayonnaise, and a toothbrush. Some people have drinking problems, mental stability issues, etc.

2. After somebody dies, especially famous people, it suddenly becomes politically incorrect to say things you could have easily said before they died. For example, if I had said that Steve Jobs was a jerk before he died, I would get a clamour of agreement; if I said it after he died, there would be a clamour of agreement until somebody says "but he died!" and talks of "respect for the dead". If I didn't respect somebody when they were alive, I'm not sure why  I would when they are dead. Another, which MAKES sense for people you knew personally, is the "But they can't defend themselves now" thing. On the other hand, I doubt if I had said mean things about Steve Jobs when he was alive he would have taken personal offense and defended himself by posting responses on a forum.

3. For famous/semi-famous people, they are usually well-regarded not necessarily because they deserve to be but because they have loads of people that are hired pretty much for the sole purpose of making them likable. A few months after their death when people start rebutting the tributes made to what seemed like a "great man" people are almost surprised when they learn that, no, he couldn't crush diamonds using his buttocks. He was just a person, and like any other person he had flaws, even big ones, and naturally the people with personal experience dealing with that persons less than stellar qualities are sick and tired of hearing people whose only experience with the person is through their overpriced products, magazine articles call them great or world-changing, and act like they actually knew the person when all they knew was the image of that person designed by their public relations people.

I must really say, what the guy did in his private life doesn't really concern me.
