Solve : Logic Gate? |
Answer» I was wondering.....when looking at a NOT Gate....what causes the output to change from above the transistor to below it... what overcomes the force. Quote from: TurtlesNThings on July 15, 2017, 01:13:47 AM I was wondering.....when looking at a NOT Gate....what causes the output to change from above the transistor to below it... what overcomes the force. From you request it is not clear what information you need. There are books on the subject. Would you like a list of books abo0u logic devices ussd in present day computers? Hee is a link that will get you started on the basics. http://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/logic/logic_1.html Quote As well as TTL and CMOS technology, simple digital logic gates can also be made by connecting together diodes, transistors and resistors to produce RTL, Resistor-Transistor logic gates, DTL, Diode-Transistor logic gates or ECL, Emitter-Coupled logic gates but these are less COMMON now compared to the popular CMOS family. Is that any help to you? Unsure what info you need... basically with a NOT gate its an Inverter so if your NOT gate / Interter operates on 5 Volts, you feed a 1 into it where 1= 5 Volt you get a 0 = 0 Volt output or feed a 0 = 0 Volt into it and you get a 1 = 5 Volt output. If you feed a squarewave signal into it with a 5 Volt amplitude you get the inverse squarewave as the output also at a 5 volt amplitude etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverter_(logic_gate) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_wave So an input of 0101010101 will Invert to 1010101010 And 1111111111 will Invert to 0000000000 There is a threshold that has to be met for the Inverter to function, such as a minimal voltage. With the 7404 Inverter IC's I remember having some issues around the 4.72 Volt range where it would drop out with some circuits I was working with. You WANT your voltage input to it to be at least 1 to 2 tenths of a volt greater than the dropout voltage. Otherwise you will get false outputs. Quick look at data sheet on the 7404 and its 4.75 to 5.25VDC https://www.engineersgarage.com/electronic-components/74ls04-datasheet For a transistor based NOT gate circuit you will also have to worry about drop out if the voltage is too low, or if voltage dips from a heavy current draw to output a false state as a result of voltage dipping fast from a 1 to a 0 and back to 1 as the input side of your NOT gate which would cause an output to be 0 then 1 and then 0 again. DaveLembke, Many moden devices do not use the TTL gates, like the 7404. Instead the logic chips now are made with some form or variant of CMOS technology. This helps reduce noise and jitter. For a time, CMOS was slower, but new methods have the new logic designs as fast as the old TTL. Besides, the old TTL chops took more powqer. https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/textbook/digital/chpt-3/logic-signal-voltage-levels/ Also: http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/sn74hc04.pdf data for the 74HC04 chip, |

Solve : I need help from a network engineer to answer some interview questions? |
Answer» Hey everyone |
| 3. |
Solve : Upgrade and expansion? |
Answer» Right now we are running a host server that houses our application so that customers who WOULD rather us host it are allowed to do so and it gives them rdp access to it from anywhere. Server had been up and running for a few years now and its currently running 2008 server R2 and has around 175 people that connect to it. Unfortunately when it was setup it was setup as the Active Directory Domain Controller, DNS, File Server, and the Terminal Server. Well I know that need to be split out but because of cost and downtime we will need to do it slowly and was kinda getting my plan in place and wanted to maybe get some opinions and see if I was MOVING in the right direction. I made a crude drawing of the current layout of what we have and what we can work with currently. I plan on turning all the machine into VMs also. So far I have a host machine running hyper v server 2016 and I have two VMs running on it with Server 2016 installed. The Test Main for instance is the current server running that house everything and where the 175 people are remoting into. Currently we have them remoting into a environment to where they can only see the program which launches when they remote in. I also plan on switching that out for App mode in the new vms. I have added the hyper v server host to the domain along with the 2 server 2016 vms. Now I plan on doing all this without interrupting the Test.Main computer for now as we cant have any downtime with it right now. On the test.main we have the program running off the c DRIVE but all the data is stored on a separate J: drive. I installed remote desktop services on the vm server 2016 1 and it now has the session broker, web access, licence server, and session host roles. I know we shouldn't run all that one one machine but for now it will have to do. I plan on installing a version of our software on the c drive of the vm but it will still access the data off of the test.main 2008 machine this way for the future we can have different vms running different versions of the app but still keep all the data stored in one place. Now the vm server 2016 2 will have a different version of the app installed and have user rdp into it as well as the vm server 2016 1 but the only role I was going to INSTALL on the VM Server 2016 2 was the rd session host. I currently have not setup a rd gateway and wasn't SURE if I needed it or not some sites say i didn't and wasn't sure if I could just use the connection broker. For now I only plan on a few users on these new vm machines but will add more over time and also plan on upgrading and splitting out the roles on the old main.test machine and also taking the users out. Was just looking for any advice as this is a big project im kinda jumping into. |

Solve : Have a question? |
Answer» HI, Anyone knows books of Window 10? I want to know about it more. Thank you. Google is the best free book out there. You must have specific questions I am thinking, so I'd make a list of questions and then ask Google and SEE what info you can find. There should be lots of USEFUL info to learn with the CORRECT search criteria used. If you want a physical book vs online SEARCHING then I'd suggest these; however I do not own these. I have no books on 10 and use Google myself. Solve : Favorite YourTube OBD 2 Android Car scan? |

Answer» I like this one best of the many videos about Automotive scan stuff. I have yet to receive it. I will report if it really does what they claim. Cool .... I have always been nervous around the OBD / OBD II connection as for its a direct port to the computer brain of the vehicle. And computer brains for automobiles are pricey to replace as my wife found out on her Cavalier 20 years ago it was $1080 for the metal box brain that fried. Years ago my one friend used a paperclip to check the codes in his car. He was lucky enough to jump the correct pins. http://codes.rennacs.com/Manual-info.php Not sure I would keep it plugged in all the time. |

Solve : On-Line Accounts: Why do lthey make it so hard?? |
Answer» Maybe it is just me. But it seems that on-line account management is getting HARDER. Specifically:
Earlier I went to my Bank and they have doubts that I am who I say, but it is the very same computer and cookies are present. Do they think somebody took my cookies ? To get 'free' software I have to provide a lot of personal information. How is that free? Is my personal information of no value? This week I sign-up with one of the top hosting companies and the 'basic' hosting platform is a huge labyrinth. So the support people tell me to do the advanced package! Is it just me or is it harder to do something SIMPLE on the Internal. Please let me know before I go back to using Prozac once a day. Thanks for listening. It helps to have someone to to talk about this stuff. What financial institution required you to sign up for an A/V subscription ? ? You're being had... Quote from: patio on August 15, 2017, 05:38:27 PM What financial institution required you to sign up for an A/V subscription ? ?The Bank did not make me get an AV subscription. The bank has a problem knowing who I am. The even sent an e-mail asking me to sign in again. I don't know why they do that. As for the AV,did finally did activate after I did um install and re install. The instructions were just wrong, I had to go through the activation by GUESS work. As for the web-hosting, I will just have to GIVE up on the 'basic' hosting. But I refuse to get the 'advanced' hosting just to get support. I would not need support if the did not obfuscate what ought to be simple. This is becoming a common prat ice. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obfuscation Quote The psychologist B. F. Skinner said that medical notation is a form of multiple audience control, which allows the doctor to communicate to the pharmacist things which the patient might oppose if he or she could understand medical jargon.[ Source:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obfuscation It is not just doctors anymore. Webmasters are doing it all the time. I'd never bank ONLINE...I access and review my bank account online. I use accounts for Paypal, eBay, Amazon; I pay my cable/Internet bill and my Power bill online, both with their own account, and I use transfers through my Bank website to pay my rent. I have a VPS webhost. I've never had problems creating or accessing any of these accounts. I've never dealt with this "obfuscation" to which you refer. |

Solve : Increase PS4 Storage? |
Answer» I bought a PS4 for myself last year, with the 500 GB Drive. I kind of all ready filled that an added a few GB using Thumb Drives but, not SURE how to configure it to STORE games on them like the XboxThe hard drive can be removed and a larger drive installed. Once a larger drive is installed when booting the PS4 it will initialize the drive and claim it for PS4 use. When connecting to the PlayStation Store you can re-download games that you purchased through the store .... Might Take a While as for games can be quite large. Save the 500GB drive to the side in case larger drive ever dies or format it and use it in a laptop or some other application where you have a need for 500GB storage. this guy is the current incarnation of Squall.I thought he would have grown up by now. Not sure what the Troll is talking about I bought a Terra Drive an took out the 500 GB Drive. It asks me for a firmware update, which, I downloaded to a usb drive an tried preforming the update an isn't able toI was able to get my data backed up but, I still get this error mesage though I'm doing everything right. Solve : A silly little "tech puzzle"? |
Answer» With all the talk a week or so ago about the whole Microsoft Paint being deprecated stuff, I was tinkering around with various Windows versions and different versions of Paint. I had an interesting idea and managed to do this: The puzzle here is that this is running on 64-bit Windows 10- which cannot run 16-bit programs. Also I too forgot about NT and its 32-bit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT_3.51 Now I am curious if the "backwards support daisy chain" to 16 bit support from Windows 10 64-bit is possible with grabbing guts from prior windows 7 or 8 32-bit version supporting 16-bit in 32 bit to run then in the 32-bit support of Windows 10 64-bit .... See what you started ... Wow! I just discovered I have an old CD with games that I thught were only 16 bit. I looked and found it has two seperate folders. The folder for WIN95 works on my 64 bit Windows 7 pro. screen shot below... [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Yep that was an intentional red herring, Dave. 64-bit Windows 10 cannot run 16-bit applications, so I didn't LIE, it just turns out that didn't apply My understanding of the 16-bit limitation is that they used Virtualization. with 32-bit Windows 16-bit software was virtualized via Processor features available when running in 32-bit protected mode. 64-bit Long Mode has similar features however they apply to 32-bit; so 32-bit applications are virtualizable when running in 64-bit long mode, but there is no virtualization mode allowing a processor in 64-bit long mode to execute 16-bit instructions. They could have accomplished it with some kind of full on emulation but I doubt it was worthwhile. Quote They could have accomplished it with some kind of full on emulation but I doubt it was worthwhile. Very true and I didnt know that it was a virtual environment. I thought they had some sort of prior Windows code brought forward to newer OS as sort of an intentional version creep to allow for 16 bit in 32 bit OS. Microsoft has been known to creep older libraries and handler objects forward which sometimes made for some interesting security holes that needed to be patched. There were other components of NT that were also 32 bit...waay back when. The 32 bit thing started with the Intel 386 chip. http://www.cpu-info.com/index2.php?mainid=386 Quote When the 386 was launched in 1985 it was certainly not faster than the 20MHz and 25MHz 286's. But Intel designed MANY new features into the CPU that gave it many more possibilities than the 286. For instance, the 386 could operate in three modes: the Real mode to emulate a 8086/8088, the Protected mode just like the 286 and the new Virtual mode that made multitasking possible. Also new was the possibility of the 386 to switch between the three modes without having to reset. Something that was impossible for the 286.That was a milestone in PC history. |

Solve : TP LINK POWERLINE? |
Answer» I have been given a pair of tp link 600.powerline adapters. because i was thinking my wi fi wasnt' strong enough. i have a router in one room . I also believe both power points need to be on the same circuit2 outlets fed by same meter/breaker board in same house is OK. Does not need to be same branch or ring. Power line data links may interfere with AM and short wave reception. Here is one of MANY references about this. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/gamesblog/2008/oct/20/1 Quote Interfering with peopleThe range of interference is limited. OFTEN it does not reach your neighbors. But it can be a concern for other people in your home that like to listen to shortwave. Althought they work fine for Salmon in my experience they are garbage...salmon, have you found yours to be 'set and forget' ? I've generally found them problematic to setup overall (some better or worse than others) but more troublesome was having to 'maintain' them. they'd either drop out, LOOSE connection or have some issue that needed intervention. but I'm glad they do work for some people. Perhaps they work better with the UK Home power delivery system?maybe, but UK and OZ are both 240V at 50Hz and earthed, but who knows. US being 110V and unearthed I could see those adapters being different (not sure if better or worse though). Quote from: Mark. on August 23, 2017, 05:36:00 PM salmon,One or other will drop out and need to be power-cycled, very occasionally, I would say no more often than once in 6 months, if that. To me that looks like acceptable performance, especially when you consider the price difference compared with a Samsung wireless adapter for the TV.Thanks to all of you for replying ,i will try your suggestions and let you know how i go on. |

Solve : Free second phone number from Google. Really free?? |
Answer» I just got a second phone number from Google. But it is not inside my own AREA code. Doesn't matter, it does not cost anything. Or does it? The old standby for free phone service, Google Voice lets anyone with a Google account choose a phone number and then gives you plentiful options for managing calls made to that number.https://www.cnet.com/how-to/apps-that-give-your-phone-a-second-number/ That CNET post says that a lot of companies are doing something like what Google does. Let anybody have a number you can use as f it really is his own. Well, I got the extra number from Google. It is on my ANDROID tablet. I have to be on Wi-Fi for it to work. It is in another area code so I have to dial using the full ten digit number. (Here in the USA we use 10 digits to cal inside the USA.) No problem, my fingers can do it, just three more digits. But here is my question. Is this for real? Where is this going? What if everybody did this. Are there enough numbers available? Who pays for the numbers? Can I get a number for my pet? Maybe I could strap a tiny Android to my dog, cat or GOAT so that when my pet is out of my sight I can ring it.. Why on tablet? I followed this way: Set up an entirely new number on Google Voice. Don't connect it to your mobile number. Once it's set up, have it forward to your mobile number. It'll give you a 2 digit code, call your mobile number and you'll have to enter that 2 digit number into your mobile phone, to verify that the number you forwarded to is really you. From then on, when someone calls your Google Voice number, it'll ring on your mobile phone. (You can forward to more than one number at a time, so your mobile phone, your home phone and your wife's phone will all ring when someone calls your GV number.)Nice tip. Thanks. |

Solve : Interesting RAM overclock issue - Passed Memtest86 6 full tests over 7 hours? |
Answer» Ran into a interesting issue with BSOD with Windows 7 64-bit on a overclock that was similar to another build. I picked up a Athlon 64 x2 4450B 2.3Ghz for $5 to upgrade my one Sempron 140 2.7Ghz single-core to a better dual-core processor system. All was good initially. And I stress tested the CPU at 2.3Ghz and then performed the 200 to 220Mhz RAM overclock which forces the locked multiplier Athlon 64 x2 4450B to jump to 2.53Ghz just like I did on another build with the same CPU and similar motherboard. Ran stress testing and all was good as well as ran Memtest86 on it and it passed 3 full tests and figured all was good to go. The RAM in this system is also good quality higher end Corsair DDR2 800Mhz RAM a matched pair of 2GB sticks for 4GB. |

Solve : Open Letter to AVASt. Keep It Simple? |
Answer» Trying to get into AVAST support is hopeless. So I am putting an open letter here. My gripe is not about the product. My gripe is about the support. Or maybe it is about the documentation. I had and still have, the free version of AVAST for windows. Two weeks ago I install a trail version. The trial expired. I deleted the Avast program form my Windows XP desktop. Then I FOUND that you had charge my pal-pay account for the licensed version. OK, check my e-mail. Yes, got t some things from you in my e-mail and I find an activation code. Sounds GOOD. so far. So, I download the free version again. But I can not activate the product. I can not log into you site u sing the password your gave me. I will keep trying, but your documentation ix horrible. Now i am wondering if it really was you that charged my PayPal account. Or maybe your company has a mood disorder and your behave like two different people. Looking at the site, I can not even find a way to send e-mail to you. Of course, I am old and maybe short on smarts. But I have found that when customers complain in public, they sometimes get results. Here is my KISS guide lines for anything anybody sells anywhere.. • The name of the product should be UNIQUE and not confused with another. • When received, the name of the product and version number must be visible • Documentation must classify any variations between vendors products. • Stop telling customers not replay to replay to an e-mail message. Is that too hard? Does anybody understand my frustration? Last time I dealt with them, I was lead here to a community forum for the free version: https://forum.avast.com/ I had a false positive issue and some other user pointed me to how to add the program to exclusion list. I was THINKING that they would want to know that the false positive was happening, but I was just directed at a method to get around a false positive. I never bought their product to try out their actual support. Sometimes you boggle my mind with this stuff Geek... Why the heck would they need a Paypal # for the free version ? ? Why would it not re0install ? ? BTW all you did was REMOVE the desktop shortcut...no wonder it wouldnt reinstall |

Solve : Old, but interesting read I found on 486 motherboards w/ fake and missing parts? |
Answer» I was looking up a PC Chips board that I had a ways back and was curious what ever happened with PC Chips manufacturer. Looking into where they are now, bought out or belly up and found this article rather interesting. The PC Chips board I had was a 386 SX 16Mhz. Found this article interesting in how low end boards could be ordered with false identification labels making a no name chipset look like INTEL because it says Intel and who would question a chip label. (Somehow, MSI went from low-end scrap dealers to making high-end Gaming stuff though...) This caught my eye...i am really suprised at some of the glowing reviews of their high end products lately... I guess things can and do change over time. I agree that MSI has shown improvement. The feedback ratings at sites that sell their products have actually averaged more than 4 of 5 stars for many products whereas in years past it would be 2.5 or 3 stars. I see their products when browsing through newegg and tigerdirect and other sites, and feedback seems more positive over the last about 2 years. It will still be a while before I would buy a MSI brand product though. There are others out there that are not so much a gamble still and around teh same price. The last MSI brand product I bought was a socket 478 motherboard for my last employer to repair a dead system for a user where the main board was toast, but CPU and RAM was still good so moved that into the replacement board and all was good for about 2 months and then the system would randomly reset itself as if someone pushed the reset button, but the reset wasnt wired up. I figured it must be the power supply so I swapped that and nope still did it. Checked temperatures to see if it was running too hot and resetting but temp of Pentium 4 2.8Ghz HT CPU was 49C which is normal. Thought maybe the soft power button was to blame on case since this is same case that the other motherboard died in, so I moved everything over to a new case and it still did it. Swapped out this MSI board with a used ASUS board from a friend and problem went away and the same CPU and RAM was still healthy. Tried to get a RMA replacement board and shipped out the board for replacement or repair and never got a replacement. Called support and got someone in India who wasnt any help but INFORMED me that they could send me a replacement board if I would give them my credit card number to pay for replacement out of pocket. That was it with MSI in addition to friends who had all sorts of problems with their products lasting sometimes just long enough to die after warranty period was up. But to send a board back RMA and never see it again was just nuts. At least it wasnt my money lost it was a business that was out $80 which wont feel the pain of just a $80 loss when they did around 20 million in sales. I think the biggest surprise reading the info at the website was the fact that it wasnt just 1 board that was made without cache or with fake cache and hacked BIOS to report that 256k cache was present when it wasnt, and this illegal activity didnt catch up with them. They were able to do this for quite a while with multiple boards and someone made a killing ripping off people by selling a lower cost product and so many people shop by price vs product name. If something like this were to happen today I would think that with all the people who BENCHMARK boards it would be found out pretty quickly that a board is lacking functionality. I think the only thing that can compare to this to me in last few years was buying a motherboard and installing my AMD FX-8350 to it and then confused by that the clock would never reach 4.2Ghz when running a heavy benchmark to pegging all 8 cores to 100% the CPU has 4.0Ghz as normal clock and wouldnt reach the 4.2Ghz Turbo clock mode that this CPU supported. I then found out that the motherboard that I bought did not support this 4.2Ghz Turbo clock mode. But the board manufacturer never stated that it would run it at 4.2Ghz or not, it just has a CPU support list and the AMD FX-8350 4.0Ghz was the heaviest CPU that the Biostar motherboard supported and the 4.0Ghz as listed was it not 4.2Ghz with Turbo. The ok thing is that with 8 cores at 4.0Ghz, the lack of the extra 200 Mhz doesnt really make a big difference and so I am not going to toss out this motherboard to spend $65-$75 to get a board that supports Turbo 4.2Ghz for the extra 200Mhz CPU speed. I could if I wanted to just run an overclock manually and have it run faster that way such as increasing the FSB clock. But I'm ok with it at 4.0 Ghz its still plenty of processing power. Other board that kind of surprised me was the Gigabyte board with a Kabini 25Watt TDP APU build that I did and the memory CONTROLLER doesnt support dual-channel as I wasnt aware until after buying 2 x 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz sticks thinking I was going to have 8GB of Dual-Channel memory, that its Single-Channel only with the socket AM1 builds so I could have gotten a single 8GB stick and saved a few dollars. The memory controller is on the APU itself and it supports single-channel only. Corners are also cut in the design to how the BIOS is on the AM1 boards but for a $40 motherboard and $34 APU I suppose it should have been expected that its likely lacking something. But nothing illegal in these 2 somewhat recent experiences of missing or unsupported features. I'm glad they have seemed to turn things around...however i'll never buy 1 of their products again. |

Solve : “Netflix On Us” - why it matters.? |
Answer» “Netflix On Us” This looks more like just a press release. But stop and think about it.. Look at this: Quote To help celebrate the launch, which officially rolls out next Tuesday, September 12th, T-Mobile is holding a “Netflix Meme-a-thon” on September 7th. Fans will be invited to post their favorite Netflix show quotes, GIFs and memes to be entered to win prizes like free smartphones and T-Mobile or Netflix swag. Those participating will also be entered for a chance to win tickets and an all-expense paid trip to the premier of Stranger Things season two.Does that matter to you? Or anybody you know? Think about it. What T-Mobile wants to do is to disrupt the industry. With this KIND of stuff, T-Mobile might eat into the profit margins of other COMPANIES without doing ANYTHING to improve the technology. Think about it. Instead of making things better, it might make things worse. If millions of consumers move over to T-Mobile just to get free stuff, the industry will become just a marketplace where people haggle over old stale merchandise that never gets better. Do you see what I am saying? Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 06, 2017, 09:39:54 PM “Netflix On Us” Very rarely (sigh). What makes you think that EVERYONE will switch to T-Mobile simply because they now have Netflix? T-Mobile also increased the COST of the plans specifically that fall under the requirements so they are $10 more. Same price as a Netflix subscription. Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 07, 2017, 06:19:27 AM T-Mobile also increased the cost of the plans specifically that fall under the requirements so they are $10 more. Same price as a Netflix subscription.I was not aware of that; My service is with TAG mobile and they can not increase the price. But neither do I get free Netflix. My rant is about how the big guys want to make more money without real work. I mean work like:
But just making a partnership with another business does little to advance technology. |

Solve : Let's Go Back to the Dongle? |
Answer» This is from dictation. Let's go back to the dongle. Years ago software companies controlled the distribution of their products by the USE of dongles. You could not use the software unless there was a dongle plugged into some type of interface port of your computer. Users hated it because it was a nuisance to have to remember to plug the dongle in when you wanted to use a piece of software that had a very strong copyright restrictions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dongle But I think the time has come to go back to using the dongle. Here explains why I say this. It is because today both individuals and businesses have more than one computer used for everyday tasks. But the piece of software that is used for a specific task is never used on both computers at the same time. That is because there is only one individual in the home or business that uses that particular software. Here or she would like to really use it on either computer. But if the software is installed on both computers, it becomes a violation of the end user license agreement. That license agreement says that the software must be installed only on one computer unless another licenses is purchased for the second computer. For many users that is absolute nonsense. Two computers are needed because there are are other people that need to use computers in the same environment. But only one user needs to use the special software that is covered by a very strong copyright restriction. This is one of the reasons people want to go over to using free software or public domain or other software that does not have draconian restrictions on installation on several computers. However, there are some programs that are so good in what they do that you need the commercial version, not the free version that is supported by some group of people that like to create free software. This can happen not just in a business situation, but also even a home user may find there is a specific program her or she needs for some specific purpose and that specific purpose is not satisfied with any the free programs out there. So, it's time to bring back the dongle. The dongle would look like a small USB thumb drive. What it does is give an encryption code that identifies the license for a specific installation of a copyrighted software product. The dongle cannot be duplicated without violating the law. It not built in such a way that you cannot just simply read it and write an image of it to a similar device. Every time the thing is red there is a new encryption process that is identified by the software program and thus insurers that any counterfeit dongle will not work. Well, if somebody wanted to do a very intensive reverse engineering, they could probably figure out some way to duplicate the dongle. But that require more equipment than what most people would have at HAND. And even in that case there could be legal remedies the software company could take if they found out that somebody was mass-producing images of software keys. The reason I say this is because I find sometimes that I have to use Windows 7 for certain kinds of things I need to do. But the software I like to also use at the same time is currently installed on my XP installation. Now it is possible, with a great amount of work, to uninstall the software from XP and then inform the support department that I have uninstalled the software and then I can reinstall it again on Windows 7 That is a real pain in my lower back. If I had a dongle, I could just unplug it from the Windows XP machine and plug it into the Windows 7 machine. Or better yet, with Windows XP and Windows 7 both installed on the same machine, I would never have to move the dongle and all. Does anybody understand what my rant is about? I think the software companies would get more happy users if they would allow the users to have a dongle instead of going through this insane un- activation and re-activation process any time you want to move your expensive software to another computer. Now I would have written this rant and communicated it with the support crew of the company I am thinking about, but it is very hard to communicate with them at all. Insteadm, I would put it here and have other people read it. And besides, more than one company could benefit is they were to go over to this idea of using a dongle instead of having people go through the insane idiotic process of activation of their product and then trying to figure out why didn't activate and calling up the support people and all that kind of stuff. Just use a dongle. End of rant. [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]All copy-protection schemes have their pros and cons, none of them are PERFECT. Dongles can get lost, broken or just plain fail. I personally dislike dongles with a passion. and the little buggers aren't cheap to replace either. then factor in the lead time to get the replacement delivered !!! I've had quite a few get slammed by a wayward leg or chair. but as stated, pro's and cons for any system. for me, dongles are (slightly) more negative than positive.Yeah, Dongles are a complete pain, perfect thing to lose, especially if you are needing to carry it around with you! Personally, I'm growing tired of the amount of protection software companies are putting into their software to stop piracy, none of it seems to work. All that it seems to do is irritate and inconvenience people who have actually bought the software, I'm currently having an absolute nightmare trying to reinstall a machine with Windows 10 using an 8.1 key after replacing a failed motherboard. It would be interesting to see how much the current systems work to stop piracy, especially for software designed for business use since legitimate businesses tend not to pirate software anyway! If 10 was installed to the failed MBoard then it'll be in the database... Call them they will issue a new key for the replaced MBoard....Back when I worked for a small Food Store chain we had Parallel Port Dongles for software on POS Servers as well as Membership Card Printer computer. Without these the software would error. Hardware Keys aka Dongles have been around for a while. A few clients of mine have them for high end software they use. One of them asked if there was a way to share a dongle between 2 computers and I was like... wow... this person has no clue WHY the dongle is being used in the first place. When I made them aware that the dongle is a hardware key and its suppose to only work on one computer at a time and that running multiples through some sort of communication trickery to share between 2 computers was illegal they were like OH WOW! I didn't know that. The Parallel Port type weren't that much of a burden as for most of them allowed for still a parallel port printer or other devices to communicate through them. But the USB type are a danger for any computers where the USB dongle can get bumped. With bandwidth ever increasing, I'm just waiting for the day that Windows for example becomes a monthly service and we connect to it as thin-clients. Piracy of Windows would be pretty much gone. PXE Booting though a roku type of box that hosts a local PXE service and MAINTAINS a secure connection over the internet with secure encrypted tunneling to MS Servers that host the terminal sessions to host Windows for the many users. With the increased bandwidth and computer processing power, the mainframes that serve up the OS wouldnt be that heavily loaded as for while its sort of a traditional thin-client type of connection, the processing power of the session could be local and only user data passed back to their servers so say you launch excel, well excel is downloaded on the fly to your computer and it opens, it then through your cloud connection with microsoft gives you all your folders etc as well as local folders with some local storage options for people who might still need to work offline. And just like some of the game providers like steam has, you can sign out a game for offline use through the steam client well you could then do the same with microsoft hosted products. Then when you reconnect your data sync's. It would be a major cash cow forcing all modern Windows users over to a pay-per-use system. No longer that one time fee of $139.99 for an OS that you can run for 5 or 6 years or longer, but now $4.99 a month ( $59.88 per year ) or $54.99 a year if paid for 1 year in advance, so it continually brings in revenue. Software like MS Office could be added to this like the cable companies do with channel selections. The more royalty based software you want the more expensive your experience. You can jump in and out of higher tier services such as your kid goes off to college, well they jump into a college option and get access to all software necessary for their institution etc, and they are paying say $19.99 a month etc which is for Windows + All Software they would ever need that is offered by Microsoft. $19.99 a month is not bad at all and over a 4 year college thats likely more money than microsoft would otherwise make on the students at an additional $180 per year above the $59.88 per year if paid monthly vs annual discount offering when paying for 12 months in advance. Other thing with this comes cheaper computers. You no longer are buying a new computer with the cost of Windows bundled into it, so you see computers for say $50 lesser price tags etc. These computers can be used for any OS of choice. And Linux can still run on these as well as Apple also gets on board with making their OS and Apps a paid for service so any computer can run their OS. * Well that last part is wishful thinking i guess. Apple would take a hit if they got out of the Mac Computer Business and left it up to other computer manufacturers. Buts its one way that Microsoft would have a one up on Apple in the fact that they dont have people hardware locked to their platform and any computer able to run as a thin client that meets the minimum processing power can suddenly run the latest version of Windows and security updates are all done server side so your always hosted the most secure version available. To help shove people out of older computers and force planned obsolescence they can make their software processing heavy to force the hand of people to have to upgrade so computer manufacturers dont get hurt by suddenly computers that people arent upgrading due to OS obsolescence. If computers were given an OS that evolves people would be less likely to upgrade unless specific games etc didnt run on its specs. So they could set it up by design for a just about forced hand to upgrade computers every 5 years if they want to keep with the Windows service. Most would probably upgrade after the 3 to 5 year period especially if they are gamers. Quote With bandwidth ever increasing, I'm just waiting for the day that Windows for example becomes a monthly service and we connect to it as thin-clients. And this is exactly what MS wants...The only plans for "Windows as a Service" are for the enterprise. The appeal in that market segment would likely be the same as the appeal behind Office 365. Always on the latest version with no deployment hassles, etc. No, Licensing Dongles are crap. Even if they work 100%, they can still get lost or stolen. They can still break, or be broken by accident. What if the manufacturer goes under, or they switch to a standard software key, but you don't want ot upgrade? Now suddenly these dongles aren't available. You want to add another user, but they don't even sell the hardware dongle's anymore, so your only option is to go with the new verison, but it's not compatible with the old version at all, so now you have to upgrade the others. And now those other dongles are completely useless and aren't even saleable. Furhtermore, just because a Hardware dongle allows you to install something to two machines for use with one license, doesn't mean you are even allowed to- often doing so violates the EULA just as much as it does for a standard "Serial Key" type of install. Even in a fantasy land where they always work and are properly detected every time, they don't actually have their own functionality, and they use up a USB Port. But as it happens, they generally don't work. Our old software runs on an Operating System that requires a Dongle; THEOS Calls it a "Software Portal". If it worked, it would be annoying. But half the time it doesn't work. It isn't detected. it doesn't see it for one reason or another. We receive frequent support calls as a result even though we aren't responsible for the OS itself, as it almost never sees it when it boots up, so they have to reboot their server until it is seen. Try a different port? etc. It was the major setback in trying to get the installations onto Virtual Machines as well, because it turns out the dongle isn't really a USB device at all, so VMWare didn't otherwise have a way to forward it. we had to actually work with VMWare to get it to pass through a physical USB Port properly. And the Parallel Port Dongles? Completely useless in absolutely every way for that, even if the computer had a parallel port, becasue there was no pass-through capability. Installing direct to the hardware left the table becasue the OS doesn't support features like SATA and is limited to some low amount of RAM like 2GB, and most customers also run Windows software of some kind so it makes no sense to have their nice new xeon-based system with 16GB of RAM used to run an OS from the 80's in a compatibility mode. The "magical chairs" appeal of a hardware dongle falls by the wayside because the reality isn't a crystal rainbow, and the EULA usually only covers having the install on one computer per license at a time anyway.I started computing in the days of Commodore 64 and I don't recall ever having a dongle for any computer software. Based on the discussion here, I'm glad I never had to use them. I miss my C64. I bought one at a yard sale in the mid 1990s for $20 in its original package with foam and booklet and all. I was so foolish to toss the box out and then lend the C64 to neighbor who killed it dumping a beer into it. Today they go for good money in new condition in original box back then i didnt think that it would be such a collectable. I even gave away 8088 XT and 286 systems thinking they made so many of them and there wouldnt be a future market for them. But when 99.99% of them go to recycle/trash the remaining .01% then has a good value to collectors. I even gutted some systems to make room for others and keep the good parts for other systems then tossed out all my ISA cards when PCI was the now. Now some of those ISA cards are worth good money video cards, a 4MB ISA type memory board that I used to bring my 286 to 4MB RAM via the ISA slot instead of by use of the on motherboard large layout of 16k RAM chips similar to 8088, all gone. Dongles weren't very commonly found in consumer software- it was more a workstation/enterprise thing. In the case I'm familiar with (THEOS Corona) I think it was probably easier than coming up with an effective software solution, too. The basic idea was that for a company, they have, say, 80 computers, but they don't want to have to pay for 80 licenses, because they aren't going to ever use them all at once. So maybe they want 20 licenses, but uninstalling it from one system and setting it up on another is a pain. The hardware dongles in that case help because they are used as a sort of physical key- you buy 20 licenses, you get 20 hardware dongles. Then you just have users use the dongles when they need the software. Of course it's not perfect but before networked management of software licenses was COMMONPLACE, it made a lot of sense. It's not really made any sense for typical consumers, though. |

Solve : Open Letter to eBay; Poor User Support.? |
Answer» Might be this is off topic, Not sure. An open letter to eBay. And to other big firms that are following the same business plan. The first and last rule in good business is attention given to the customer. Some of the biggest firms in the industry are not following this standard. Instead, they are causing users to wait through a series of questions and answers before they have a chance to talk to a real person. And then after that, they still can't talk to a real person. Yes, I know that there is a protocol that have to be followed. But there are some problems that are so obviously needy that it should not be necessary to send somebody through a series of 20 questions. There is a tendency of many individuals and businesses to play a game of bait and switch. They offer something that appears to be easy and desirable and then they make it confusing and lacking functionality. The end-user ought to have some way of communicating with eBay and telling them that a number of users are adopting policies that are misleading and unfair to the users. Here is one example of this practice. Some vendors on eBay are offering web hosting and they claim is unlimited. That is, of course, ridiculous. It is one thing to say that something is not metered and something else to say it's unlimited. Unlimited implies that there is never any limits. But in the case of web hosting, that is not so. Disk drives have just so much capacity. Network connections have just so much capacity. Saying something is unlimited only causes confusion in the mind of the end-user. And it would be more truthful to say what the limits really are, even if the limits are not strictly enforced. Surely there must be a way of saying something has a practical limit but the limit is seldom enforced and occasional overages of the limit will not count against the user. Is that so hard? The problem with calling something unlimited is that everybody can call it unlimited. Somebody might have a server that has the limits of say 500 GB. It would be unfair and dishonest to try to SELL that service to 100 different users and tell each one of them that the disk storage is unlimited. Do the math. 500 GB divided by 100 users is not unlimited. There are other things I could complain about, but I thought I would focus on just this one thing. Calling something by the wrong name, saying it is unlimited when it really means more like unlettered or undefined or not enforced or not observed. Now here's the bad part. There is no easy way for user to contact eBay and say this is a bad practice. If I give a negative report on one of the vendors that does this, I should have to also give the same report on all of vendors at. Just because everybody does it doesn't mean that it's right. As for me, as the user, if I start getting negative feedback to users I will become blackballed and nobody will want to do business with me. I'm Artie got a message from one vendor that he doesn't want you do business with me, as if it were my fault that he is dishonest. (I did no know how he knew me.) Please, please you big business managers. Let your users have a way to talk back to you so you don't have to go somewhere else and post a rant like this. I think maybe I'll put this on Facebook. Microphone off. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 29, 2017, 02:57:24 PM The end-user ought to have some way of communicating with eBay and telling them that a number of users are adopting policies that are misleading and unfair to the users. Well, There is a "Report Item" link on every listing page, as described here. Quote Here is one example of this practice. Some vendors on eBay are offering web hosting and they claim is unlimited. Caveat Empor. You can find eBay Listings, online advertisements, Television advertisements, billboards, and so on for all sorts of stupid crap. "Essential Oils" marketed as curing migraines or headaches or all sorts of things, "Magical" copper bracelets which restore your Chi or whatever and give you increased vitality or virility, "Energy Crystals" which do much the same, etc. Sure, you can report the listings you find on eBay. They'll just spring up again. Why? *because people are buying this crap* You know what you do when somebody comes up to you and says They "paid $100 for a copper bracelet that emits and auric force field that protects their Megachi from the dangers of the constellation Ebola? You *laugh in their face*. I mean, unless they had like terminal cancer, then you would be annoyed at the people trying to prey on their desperation- but either way, you certainly don't blame the marketplace that allows it to exist. People are responsible for what they buy, and sellers are responsible for their listings. In the case of eBay, if something is listed misleadingly or incorrectly, you can get a refund. eBay is VERY buyer friendly, (perhaps even to a fault). This includes people selling snake oil cures or promising the impossible through everyday things. Did that essential Orange Oil not Cure your epilepsy or resolve your struggles with arthritis? Report it. Get a refund. Done. Enough reports, and the seller folds and creates a new storefront anyway. There are sellers who don't even SELL items- they list high-demand items, never ship it, and gain from the 1% who don't know what to do. Sellers that sell scam crap (eithe rreal or completely fake) don't last long and they subsist entirely on the people who decide to vent on other forums instead of actually opening a case with eBay regarding their scam order. Quote As for me, as the user, if I start getting negative feedback to users I will become blackballed and nobody will want to do business with me. I'm Artie got a message from one vendor that he doesn't want you do business with me, as if it were my fault that he is dishonest. (I did no know how he knew me.)Maybe he felt sorry for the fact that you *still wanted to do business with him*. I mean, come on! It's like complaining about a restaurant because the hostess and a chef played hot potato with your baby, they learned your daughter was arachnophobic so they "accidentally" gave her a plate with a tarantula on it, and the lettuce was wilted and the chicken was overcooked, and (worst of all) their wine list didn't have any good cabernet, and then complaining that you were banned. Should you care? Did you truly want to go back? Same in this case. You've already figured out why you shouldn't do business with them and now you are sour because they won't let you. Of course they won't. May as well start complaining that 419 scammers stopped returning your messages when you found out about their little game. All he needs to do is grasp the concept of eBay to get it... You did a great job of illustrating it...but i fear it;ll fall on deaf ears Quote Maybe he felt sorry for the fact that you *still wanted to do business with him*. I mean, come on! It's like complaining about a restaurant because the hostess and a chef played hot potato with your baby, they learned your daughter was arachnophobic so they "accidentally" gave her a plate with a tarantula on it, Thanks for the very creative analogy BC... Laughed at this one. I like your style of writing here, you have even made me laugh at some of my own stuff here with looking from it from a different angle or creative yet to point analogy. Yeah, mice comparison... Quote I mean, come on! It's like complaining about a restaurant because the hostess and a chef played hot potato with your baby, they learned your daughter was agoraphobic so they "accidentally" gave her a plate with a tarantula on it, and the lettuce was wilted and the chicken was overcooked, and (worst of all) their wine list didn't have any good cabernet, and then complaining that you were banned. An arachnophobic ? Who is agoraphobic? Quote People with arachnophobia tend to feel uneasy in any area they believe could harbor spiders or that has visible signs of their presence, such as webs. If arachnophobics see a spider, they may not enter the general vicinity until they have overcome the panic attack that is often associated with their phobia. Some people scream, cry, have emotional outbursts, experience trouble breathing, sweat, have HEART palpitations, or even faint when they come in contact with an area near spiders or their webs. In some extreme cases, even a picture or a realistic drawing of a spider can trigger intense fear.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachnophobia Now we need a new word about being traumatized by eBay shooing. The really is a section on eBay about this: http://community.ebay.com/t5/Selling/Traumatized-After-Scamming-Buyer-Worth-Selling-Again-Help/td-p/27144082 But the above is abut a Seller who got ripped off, not a buyer. Even so, it shows that eBay can be a dangerous place to live. Thanks for letting my rant. I should make me feel batter. EDIT: Please tell me, if you know, how can I contact eBay directly. The seller just makes excuses and does not fix the problem. Just getting my money back is not enough. The vendor should remove my domain name from his machine. This creates a problem for me, the domain holder. If my domain gets put on a shared cluster and they do not take it off, I can not get hosting from anybody on that cluster. Or so it seems. I have tried setting up my domain on another server and I get an error message because the servers share IP address. It is not rare to have 200 or m,ore domains on one IPv4 thing. And only a few vendors will let you know ahead of time what shared IPv4 they use. Then you need to open a case with eBay. However, that's not how domains work, you manage the DNS settings for your domain through your domain registrar, you would just need to point the domain to another server, your web host cannot control what you can point the domain to. I think the main issue here is buying web hosting on eBay, as I've explained before, the web hosts that advertise and sell their services through eBay are generally fly-by-night companies run by people with limited experience trying to make a quick buck. They generally lack the knowledge to actually run shared hosting properly and when it goes wrong they can simply run off and start again. There's plenty of reputable, cheap web hosts out there, I see no need to use the eBay ones. I'd even go as far as saying that a free plan from a well known web host would likely be more reliable than something from a random eBay seller. It's hilariously easy to set up a web host and list on eBay with little to no knowledge, I could literally sit down and have a working web host running and advertising on eBay ready to accept customers (or victims?) within a couple of hours at a cost of under $20. Put it this way, would you buy your broadband/cable/insurance from a seller on eBay? I'd hope not! Treat web hosting more like that, not like a product that you purchase one off which is what eBay is for.+ 1Why did you change the segment of my post you quoted to say "Agoraphobic" instead of "Arachnophobic" Quote Please tell me, if you know, how can I contact eBay directly. The seller just makes excuses and does not fix the problemThere is a Report Item link on every listing. Use it. And stop using cheap web hosting on eBay. I don't even know if I can emphasize that enough. Quote The vendor should remove my domain name from his machine. The Same IP is the same hosting provider. You're trying to cancel and report one scammy ebay seller and have them take actions so you can setup with a web hosting provider at the same IP address. Which somehow involves your DNS in some way or something. Think about it, why do you think the IPs are the same? Coincidence? Do you think that this second eBay seller, who sells hosting for the same price and I expect has the exact same images to advertise their "unlimited" hosting, is going to give you a different experience? They aren't. They are inevitably the same actual person or group of people who have innumerable alternative accounts. You aren't listening. You keep asking about reporting things to eBay. As mentioned there is a "Report Item" link. use Ctrl-F on the listing if you can't find it. Then Click it. There you go. But eBay's policies aren't written with the classical "fool" in mind (classical in the sense of "Fools and Knaves"). That the Knaves moved online doesn't absolve the Fools of their responsibility to themselves. The buyer still assumes responsibility for their own choices. E-mail providers aren't responsible for E-mail scams; Telephone companies aren't responsible for Microsoft Support Scammers. Regardless of any "checks and balances" a marketplace might put in place, a Fool and his money are soon PARTED- online, or otherwise. I'd guess that if there was such a method in place, you would very likely be ranting about how difficult eBay is making it to give money to the obviously trustworthy Dr. Vignitori in 'Minnesota' for his web hosting services. If it helps, I seem to recall Bob Dylan had song lyrics specifically about not buying eBay web hosting. It went something like "How many cheap eBay web hosting providers must a man fight against, before he figures out they all suck?" or something like that. I get the impression- particularly given your issues with Microsoft Support scammers previously, you may want to loop your "administrator" into these decisions more frequently because you are missing quite a number of obvious red flags. It seems like perhaps you are only seeing that there is a *chance* that what is being offered is completely legitimate, and latching onto that chance, assuming the marketplace surrounding the offer will somehow protect you if it's nonsense. That doesn't happen. The fool (again, the "classical" fool) will fight against any measures in place to protect them from 'knaves'. "The answer my friend...is blowin in the web...the answer is blowin in the web"."Agoraphobic" instead of "Arachnophobic" The spell check made me do it. Well, I must be the classical fool. When people tell me things, I tend to believe what they say. It is hard to break the habit. Maybe others will red this and understand that there are some things hyu should not buy on eBay. Web hosting is one.Update: The eBay terms require me to try and work with the vendor. I got a web space that has WHM and cost only $8 for one year. Witt WHM I can resell some of the space and make a little money. Or so it would seem. Now I could just forget the $8 and move on. But it is the PRINCIPLE of the thing. That vendor claims to have many satisfied customers. I doubt it. Listen to this. (To be read aloud.) I got the web space and made a simple HTML page to tell the world that I am '...under construction' and will have more later. The TOS says I can not have an empty page, unless it is under construction. OK. So I try FTP with client I have used since I can remember, and it fails. No a password issue, it gets that far, but the connection is refused after that. (I can look at the LOG file and see.) So, to COMPLY with eBay rules, I contact the vendor via eBay message. He tells me, and I quote: Quote New message from: lakeshorehost (39Yellow Star)(End of read aloud.) That is the actual quote from the message he gave me. Never, ever have I had anybody tell me to run off TLS before FTP. Is this normal? Shall I ask for my $8 back? Yes, I promise -not to buy any more too cheap to be true stuff from eBay. The bandwidth for this nonsensical rant probably cost you 8 Bucks... Quote from: patio on October 01, 2017, 10:07:11 AM The bandwidth for this nonsensical rant probably cost you 8 Bucks...You have a point. Comcast has told me I already went over my 10000 GB limit for last month. It is just a matter of time that they will start charging me. What I mean is, the web site is supposed to have unlimited everything. But if I wanted to upload and download as much as I could, I would go over my bandwidth. (How long does it take to do 1000 GB at 15Mbps?) But I am not going to try that |

Solve : UTMA - Using Too Many Acronyms? |
Answer» More and more we are using ACRONYMS. How do you SAY PCMCIA? Pee see em see eye eh. Thus not an acronym. Some of them aren't even really recent. ASOP isn't something likely to be used nowadays since it relates to BBS message board sys ops, for example. And many of them are "defined" by some arbitrary website (probably to make fun of how many shorthands there are) but are pretty much never used. DMMGH for example. Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 29, 2017, 12:29:50 AM ASOP isn't something likely to be used nowadaysI thought that was a fable |
